So happy i did, i managed to finish the whole volume in one sitting just because of how addicting it was. Now i have dozens of manga in my catalogue that i'm planning on catching up on

my manga story was a bit interesting:
in early November of 2008, I transferred school (family moved to a different school district) and so when I entered the school library, it was the thing that I would spend a lot of my free time in, as it had so many volumes. I picked up a Naruto volume and read it. I got into anime over a year later, so I might be a rarity for that regard as everyone else I have met got into anime before getting into manga.

That's a great story! I wonder how many others also got into manga that way. It reminded me that I actually left out that I did read manga before anime because of the Kingdom Hearts II manga that my middle school library had.

i read my first manga, aot, in spring of 2020. i had gotten caught up on the show (which was what got me into anime) just a couple months earlier and i was dying to not only know more but to re-experience everything that had happened in the show. i was ecstatic that the show was actually faithful to the source since being a novel-turned-movie (harry potter, divergent, percy jackson, the hunger games) fan in elementary and middle school had made me wary of any video adaptation of literature- i would often tell my friends to "just read the book". for a few weeks, i tracked down the volumes at nearby libraries and would read them during down time at school. one time, i got so used to reading manga that when i went to read a novel in english class, i turned the page backwards. my friends and i had a good laugh about that. once covid shut stuff down, i resorted to reading online since i couldn't go into libraries anymore, which was fine because i was pretty much out of officially released volumes anyways. however, i wouldn't say that reading aot was when i became a manga reader- i was just an aot fan. i'd say around june of 2020 was when i actually became a manga reader. i finished watching jojo and decided that i couldn't wait for the rest of the parts to become anime, because it took 20 years for golden wind to be animated. i read from the beginning of stone ocean until i got caught up on jojolion. as i read, i realized how much i liked the manga medium- my family wouldn't complain about it being loud, or ugly, or whatever, because i wasn't watching it on the tv, i read it on my laptop. it was easier to not get distracted from it while also being easier to put down and pick up when i needed to. now, i (usually) prefer manga over anime, especially for ongoing series. and there are so many mangas that are good, but just haven't been picked up, or were butchered in the anime. whenever my anime-only friends complains about wanting to know what's next, i tell them to "just read the manga". i'm glad i came full circle on that. i actually recently got my first physical manga volume back in march! my dad bought me volume 1 of chainsaw man as a gift because i was rereading it and got super hyped about it.
i'm a much newer manga fan, and i have a vastly different experience than manga fans that have been around since the 2000's, but it's been the best two years of my life. i can't say anything for sure, but i at least *hope* that i can continue appreciating manga for a long, long time to come.

I think the Covid lockdown really pushed alot of casuals(like myself)into seeking out more anime & manga, or even getting new fans to try it. For me, I thought about manga the same way I used to with certain anime: I dont have time. One day I'm watching this anime called Deadman Wonderland during lockdown & someone linked the manga in the comments. Was off from my job at the time, so I started off just reading a few chapters every few days. Suddenly im binging all night
Told myself that was dope but I'm not gonna do that again. Then I find out the site also had other popular series I recently got into like AOT & Demon Slayer. I read those. I tell myself no more. But I end up watching Berserk in lockdown, heard the manga was dope. Now I'm reading that. Then it's Chainsaw Man, then Jujutsu, then My Hero, etc.
Just crazy considering before 2020 the only anime I watched was literally Naruto, DBZ, & One Punch Man(And DBZ was the onky one i was big on). Nothing else interested me. Now I'm reading shit like Solo Leveling or Vinland Saga during lunch breaks half the time. Lockdown also gave made me less hesitant to try longer series. In like 4 months I read thru series like Kingdom & One Piece with 500+ chapters. And shows like HxH or JoJo me & my brother would binge in two weeks. I was playing longer games, watching more sports, etc. Life really works mysteriously lmao

Started in March of 2021 with finding out AoT was finishing its final season (not really, lol). I watched all of it and got into tons more anime and that eventually led me to manga. First manga volume I ever read was AoT volume 29 and from then on I have gotten into loads of different series: Kaguya-sama, Evangelion, FMA, AoT, Dorohedoro, JJK, Jojo So far my favorite has been Berserk. As someone who did read a lot and watched a lot of tv but felt things were starting to lack in western media, manga was immensely refreshing to start reading.

I first got into manga in 2002 when I was 11 with the release of monthly shounen jump in the states. It was a phsyical magazine that came every month with about 7 series in it (dragon ball, yu-gi-oh, shaman king, naruto, bleach, and one piece were the ones I remember best, the lineup changed throughout the years) and I thought it was the most mind blowing thing I'd ever read! I begged my mom to get me a substription, which I had for about 7 years. Reading manga was very niche at the time, quite hard to get your hands on stuff and plenty of series would get dropped. I think the dedication of fan scanlations was critical to the current success of manga overseas. I got back into reading shounen jump with the new online subscription a few years ago and it's so cool how accessible manga is now!

Comics came first because walking up to the library with my older brother, and I loved reading all sorts of books
    Comic books were iffy quality in comparison;
The way manga is drawn looks a lot more, consistent in quality rather then roughly drawn stand stills of comics; more fluid with actions and panel layout (at least to me anyway)
I went into sailor moon dub anime much after looking at super hero comics
Then I got fed up with how slow the episodes were and went to manga itself
Usually I’m a bit of a mix of Manga and anime
If I watched an anime and am getting hyped or impatient, I read the manga
In fma’s case I definitely read the manga first before the dvd rentals of Brotherhood and 2003 at my local library (heck, before I read it my older brother got me to watch one of the spin off movies)
Or in a rare case reading a manga and hoping for an anime adaption
I haven’t gotten much time to read lately, but I’m definitely looking forward to Jobless reincarnation light novels
I cannot read on the web as much as I’d like because I’d get headaches
Mangas were appealing because of the fluidity of actions as well as the way of how scenes and characters look like; just words can be interpreted rather differently and I want to be close to how the author had envisioned their story much more
Mostly how I got into manga was just by purely reading.

I first started really reading manga around 2019, with one punch man, then others followed. I had a few volumes before that but not the collection I have today. I was mostly anime first, because being a little older, manga wasn't really that accessible as it is today. Hell, anime wasn't either when I first started watching. My high school watching of anime was Dragonball Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion, to name a few. It was expensive to buy anime then too. Like people complain about prices now, well be thankful it's not what we use to pay for just a few episodes😕 streaming sites and manga apps have helped fuel these 2 mediums. I was more into comics then because they were more accessible.

Man, my go-to place to buy manga used to be full of shelves with different series, I would go there and spend my time exploring it, it was so much fun.
Nowadays they basically only sell naruto, op, jnk, mha and chainsaw man. The shelves which I used to love so much don't exist anymore, because they now sell anime tshirts (of the same series btw)
And I got into manga recently, in early 2017. I can just imagine how older fans must feel.

I first began to consume Japanese popular culture in the early 2000s when I was a preteen. At that time manga was actually more popular in Finland than anime since numerous serieses were translated into Finnish and you could easily follow them with a couple of coins by buying the newest book at a grocery store magazine section. Where's nowhere as many animes were dubbed in Finnish, and the majority of the fans were too young to properly follow the English monologue + the dvds were way more expensive than the mangas + you'd have to have a region free dvd player to watch any publication outside Europe (or Japan or Australia, as we share the same region code). However, for over a decade, manga was the mainstream media here everyone followed, and anime was consumed by the wealthier and often pretty snobbish elder elite who could also understand English and had the money and the machines to watch it.
It's interesting to see how the fandom changes and grows, and how the Internet has changed it completely.

I read fairy tail, akame ga kill, death note, assassination classroom, full metal alchemist, claymore, one piece, attack on Titan, Naruto, up to volume 15 of one punch man, and several others. early 2000s
I remember catching bits and pieces of Toonami anime when I was around 5 yo. Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle, bits of DBZ and Bleach, intros for Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: SAC when it was bedtime, Toonami ads particularly for Naruto and watching the episode where the kids try to see under Kakashi's mask, etc. The thing is I never felt like watching any of them because I didn't really like the anime artsyle and just the character designs or aesthetic (is that the right word?) felt very strange and weird to me, similar to when I watched the Miyazaki movies I mentioned earlier.
    2009ish
LMAOd at some Naruto YTPs and Naruto Shippuden adverts where all over Disney XD when it was a few weeks from airing. Watched the fifth episode, got hooked and wanted to start with the original series. OG series wasn't airing anymore, didn't know about free anime streaming sites or Naruto DVDs (I was a dumb 9YO) so I started with the Manga when I found and bought vol 46 (plenty spoilers and had no context to any of it) and read the manga from vol1 - 40 out of order since the books would already be borrowed and I didn't have the money or patience to buy more than vols 42-47 off of Amazon. I started reading every Shonen Jump Magazine from the library and eagerly awaited each new issue (I still have my collection of 13 issues after over a decade). That's also how I got into Ultimo, Bleach (and watching bits of episodes on tv), One Piece, Death Note, Blue Exorcist, etc.
    2011
Seen ads for Death Note live action movies in Shonen Jump and skimmed through ch3 or 4 that was included in a 2011 SJ issue and thought "ok so wtf's this about", borrowed vol1 shortly after, got hooked, kept reading. Same happened with Blue Exorcist got dropped off after I couldn't find anything after vol3 (that was as far as english print went at the time i think?), started again in 2013 but dropped it shortly after. Started watching anime on free streaming sites, got hooked on animes adaptions for Naruto, Death Note, Heaven's Lost Property, Sekirei.
    2014
Read the ''last'' few vols for Bleach, the last couple Naruto chapters on a manga reading website, got hooked on reading other manga like Heaven's Lost property, Maga Tsuki, Countrouble.
    2016-19
Watched some DBZ Kai on Toonami, loved it , wanted to watch all of DBZ start to finish (og Funimation dub with Bruce Faulconers music, still havent found a way to watch it in an official full series release and didn't feel like taking all day to download each episode from whereverz). started getting into (Slice of Life?) anime like Shomin Sample.
One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Parasyte, Lupin III, Cowboy Bebop, JoJo, Akame ga Kill, nearly everything on Toonami at the time.
    2020-2021
Started dropping anime almost completely aside from some Hunter x Hunter tha. Didn't care much for Bleach anymore, didn't like Naruto past volume 54 (start of the Great Ninja war I think?), the Toonami shows I cared for either finished airing or the story was long past where I left off. Fell back in a bit with Berserk, absolutely amazing.
    2022-2023
Fell back into Naruto, Bleach, DBZ, got super Into Chainsaw Man, enjoying anime again and still have a list of shows I still need to finish or start and shows I want to rewatch.

I started 3 years ago when I was 16 during the summer of 2019. I had just watched the first 3 seasons of My Hero Academia and was hooked. Not wanting to wait until that fall for the 4th season to come out, I decided to start reading the manga. I went online and bought the first 5 volumes of My Hero Academia and the first volume of MHA: Vigilantes, the vigilantes volume got my attention because I had no idea that MHA had a spinoff and it grabbed my interest. When I got the volumes in the mail, I read through them really fast and a few days later, I bought the first few volumes of Attack on Titan, since I also really enjoyed that anime at the time. After that I fell in love and the first actually complete manga series I read soon after was Parasyte, which was incredible. In present day, I have been reading and collecting manga as my main hobby. I have over 500 volumes in my collection and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

I got into manga last year I think. I originally did it solely to read Berserk, but I've read a lot more since then. I got into anime in 2016 with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
It's kind of sad, but neither of the manga I recommended in your community post have an official English release. With Tomorrow's Joe, I understand because it's old and fairly obscure today, especially outside of Japan, but if Osamu Tezuka's works can get English releases, why not Tomorrow's Joe?
Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is more surprising, as it's a recent series with an anime adaptation that does have an English release, even a dub! (I haven't actually read the manga yet but I love the anime and I've heard good things about the manga)

Perhaps Iruma-kun will have a shot at being brought over in the future. I remember I used to be a mega fan of Kuroko no Basket and for years-long after the anime came out-it didn't have an English release for either anime or manga. I remember i reading all the attack on titan volumes my library had at the time and i saved as much money so i could buy each new volume when they were released. i also remember downloading a bunch of manga reading apps on my old phone when i wanted to read a manga that my library or bookstore didn't have. my favorite manga at the time were one piece, soul eater, attack on titan, elfen lied, deadman wonderland, akira, jojo's bizarre adventure and prison school.
i stopped reading manga when i entered highschool mostly because i wanted to get into new things, i only got back into it when quarantine hit and i ended up reading attack on titan again and kept up with it until its conclusion. since then the only manga i read were chainsaw man and berserk.
I honestly also feel sort of old and i really can't into this new generation of manga and anime, it definitely feels weird seeing manga being more popular than back then. it makes me happy tho, so many people like the medium now and series i once had to look for scans online now are in book shelves at barnes and noble and at my library.

I've always loved anime as a child, my father was the one to introduce me to it, he'd always make Yu Yu Hakusho references lmaoo. I got into Manga in 2013 or 2014 because I was getting impatient of FairyTail episodes and I wanted to consume more FT content. Back then I didn't even know most anime are just adaptations of it. After discovering manga, I started reading series I used to watch as a kid then it just became my standard way to consume anime content because its "easier". I'd read almost anything back then, I even remember reading some lesbian and BL because I didn't know what they meant lol. Iris Zero was one of the first series I read and I kinda forgot about it and just recently I came across it and reread it, I didn't even know it was still ongoing and in hiatus.
Looking back, I feel like I've read a lot of obscure series that I never finished because at the time it was ongoing and those series relied on fan scanlations. I actually remember reading a couple chapters of Fire Punch back in its release but I stopped because I didn't see more of it in the website I used to go. Your mention of Vampire Knights brought me back to nostalgia too. I remember reading and it being popular in forums that I used to browse back then but I can't remember why I stopped reading it. I really wish I actually made a list of what I read back then.
I really am thankful for the boom of manga because more info on the author or series gets news where back then you'd have to rely on the scanlations for announcements of the series. And god bless for Shonen Jump, Manga Plus, and more legal websites being available now because I get to see new series grow and have consistent scanlations while being legally free too.
