I'm not in a relationship at all but I can understand you so much!! These type of books and movies are not romantic!! Some girls need to wake up and see that the world isn't butterflies with roses and petals. My advice is that you have to be alone with yourself so you learn how to love and respect yourself and after that be able to share your life with someone. If you are just like Hardin aka a person who really needs help from specific people (psychiatrist) and you don't love, respect nor understand why are you like this then you should take a step back and think about how to get help. Don't destroy someone else's life because you have problems. It's not their fault. P.S: these goes to both genders. I hope you're doing well 💗

honestly even if she was....it's been several years since she published it intiially- I would hope they would learn in that period of time. Also, like- shame on the publisher for not taking this into account? I know they just wanna make money and they saw this as profitable but still.

1 billion reads isn't even as much as it sounds on wattpad, because each time you click over to the next chapter, it's another read. So if one person reads 50 chapters, that's 50 reads lmfao.
So I went to Wattpad and After has 521M reads with 99 chapters which means it has around 5,265,626 full reads. Some of those must be repeats and others people like me that tried to read it but didn't like it

One of the scariest things about this book is how it teaches young girls to keep their standarts extremly low. He doesn't molest or hits you? He shows very basic human decency in once a blue moon? Then he's the dream boyfriend, apperently! I had a friend in high school who loved these types of books. She would always describle her favorite book boyfriends and all the twisted shit they do their love interest like it was the greatest love story in the world, because she geniuenly thought men being abusive pricks was romantic. All because of books like After an 50 Shades. I never saw her again after gradution. Hope her outlook got better, for her sake.

It's not even just this book. Even 'classics' like Twilight or City of Bones and the likes have these terrible tropes. One of the reasons I generally dont touch young adult romance unless it's recommended by trusted sources. It's scary to think what this does to young girls who have no idea how a relationship should actually look like

Well y'know, there are different types of masochists, the normal types, and the ones that take it to the extra levels.
The book teaches girls that if a guy is abusive one day he‘ll change and everything will be fine. But the world doesn‘t work like that. I think this book sends wrong messages. It‘s a youth book, some teenagers won‘t get that. I‘m 21 I can tell right from wrong but some younger girls can‘t, like I couldn‘t with 13 to 16.

Well actually that’s not exactly the way it is. During THREE of FOUR books they teach us that if relationship is toxic and your partner is unhealthy, he’s not going to change. And Harry didn’t change. He did her dirty over and over again. Until they separated for two months, then five months, then two years. And during this time, admit, a person CAN change. But when they were in a relationship, nothing changed, nothing was fine.

I literally had to force myself to finish book one and two. I really hated Tessa’s character . She was definitely TOO judgmental and thinks she’s better than every other girl just cause she’s a virgin and doesn’t wear revealing clothes

This book openly puts down other girls, romanticizes cheating and toxic relationships, and has the most loathsome protagonists that Molly has become my favourite character. And Landon, he’s a cinnamon roll. Can’t believe that young impressionable people (not just young girls, because not just girls read fan fiction) are going to read this and think this is healthy and how relationships should work, and that Tessa is a good role model for girls. Please. It’s 2020. Can we please make “two people who love each other and respects the other’s boundaries, with fluffy moments abound” the hot new ship dynamic?

I was twelve years old when I first read this book. For me, the main reason of why they still together is because she's supposed to fix him and make him a good person. Tessa obviously has a savior complex. She thinks she can make him better in some sort of way, and through all of her attempts, the book is swiftly telling us that we should try in all of our relationships to save the other person, so they can stay with us. Its like saying "If you stay long enough, and love them above everything else and have faith in them, they can change for good, and they will definitely be with you". That's bullshit. Thanks to examples like this I fell in love with this girl who didn't (and still doesn't) give a crap about me. I thought that if I try to "save her", she would fall in love with me and we would be together. She only hurt me every single time like Hardin did with Tessa and sometimes even worse. You don't have to save anybody. Nobody has to save you. You save yourself. I'm not saying is bad to stay by your partner's side when they are going through rough times. But you have to remember you don't have to go through anybody else's bullshit so you can deserve to be loved.

The *only* reason this book was even published was because it has _1 BILLION_ reads on Wattpad but honestly that means little to nothing. I know how wattpad works. Their old algorithm was simply, flip to the next chapter in a book, thats a read. Even if you didn't even READ the chapter. Simply clicking it count as a read. That went on for a bit until they changed it and nowadays you have to read up to a certain point, usually more than halfway, to get 1 read.
Each chapter counts as 1 read, so with 101 "chapters", 1 reader alone is *101 reads*. and 2 of said chapters are a warning at the beginning and a news update at the end, which still garner "reads" towards the book. I'm not impressed with _1 BILLION_ reads. It's not an accurate count of how many people actually read the entire book and doesn't account for re readers.
Many of the books with over 25 million reads on Wattpad are like that because of the faulty algorithm back then and they are similar quality to AFTER. Wattpad focused solely on the number of reads this book has and ran with it despite how poorly written it is.
Another thing that's gross is "Hardin" being originally based on Harry Styles. One of the most KIND and RESPECTFUL human beings. That happens a lot in fanfics, a real life person is used to make an abusive and disgusting character. I don't get, man..

as someone who loves fanfiction, i hate that so much. Fan-fiction that uses real people as it's subject matter is called Real People Fiction (or rpf) and is the nastiest, most disgusting thing to think about. People treating real life human beings as fandoms always weirded me out, and RPF is one of the worst products of that. Write what you want about ficticious characters, they're ficticious. But keep real people with real feelings out of it.

@@salysie Yeah, those characters aren't real people, they won't get affected because they are just characters. Real-person fiction can actually affect the people that it's about and has been known to break friendships about the actual people it was about because it was so weird.
As a fanfiction writer (on ao3 and ffnet) I honestly feel insulted that _this_ gets so much popularity. Mostly because the story is awful and with after and 50 shades fanfiction in general gets bad reputation.
There have been so many well written stories about abusive relationships that actually deliver a message to the audience.
I find After a completely cliche story and the only reason it got popular on Wattpad was because it was a 1D fic

Real talk for a second. I, a girl, was a Hardin to my friends. I have no excuse. All I can say for myself is that I became my abusers that I despised so much. I was horrible to almost all of my friends and the worst part is I didn't even realize how toxic I was until I got to college and finally someone told me to my face how gross and manipulative and narcissistic I was. Even now, two years later, I wouldn't have understood my behavior for what it was if no one stood up to me. I was a bully that compared her problems to others and didn't help or support anyone, even when they were suicidal, and I'm so ashamed. To this day I still have no social skills and I am terrified of getting close to people because I hurt so many people that I genuinely cared about. I'm alone and I know now that I deserve it, that I have no one to blame but myself. If I read this and similar YA books when I was in high school or younger I might have become even worse because I would have felt justified in my behavior. I may not have been able to reflect after I was told off and realize that every terrible thing that was said about me was true. I may have continued to believe that I was the real victim and everyone was against me. I'm horrified to think that girls similar to myself probably read this and saw their own abusive behaviors towards peers and boyfriends be validated.

I was the exact same way. I would hurt people I cared about. For me, the thing that was horrible, was that I knew I was being abusive. I didn't want to be abusive. It didn't make me happy like how with other people. I just didn't know how to handle my thoughts and bad behaviors. And I feel bad knowing I took it out on other people. "BuT iT's FiCtIoN iT's NoT rEaL sO iT sHoUlDn'T mAtTeR" is my favorite excuse when it comes to stories like this. Fiction has an effect on real life and this kind of stuff marketed to a young audience can be extremely damaging. But no, it didn't actually *happen* , so it's okay to romanticize the good-looking abusive white boy because he's *damaged* and he needs *true love* to fix him. Because co-dependent toxic relationships are what we should all be striving for, clearly.
Personally I love books when there is a bit of hate, abuse, ... in it. I know it’s messed up, but that’s why I read books. To escape to real world and create my own fantasies. And fantasies are usually meant to stay fantasies. Because no way in hell would I ever want to be in a abusive relationship. I like a good book where there is an evolution between 2 characters. Hate to love is my favourite Thorpe. So for me I don’t mind it at all. Now, the books aren’t made for a young public tho. I would say 18+ should be standard when it comes to these kind of books. Because I agree it’s damaging if you read this type of stuff at a young age. Now, it’s very difficult to protect a young person with all the stuff that can be found on the internet. That’s where the problem begins IMO. No safe place if they can just search Whatever they want online. So the problem is not necessarily the books.
Girl you have me ROLLING. I revisited this book after a few years and my only reaction now is a giant facepalm. The scary thing is that it does truly glorify abuse and tries to make it sexy. Sucks how there are plenty of better stories that could have been picked up and even made it as a motion picture but alas....we get this trash.

"it's okay because he loves me" is the reason I stayed in a horribly toxic-bordering-on-abusive relationship for months longer than I should have. seeing it romanticized in books like this is honestly kind of triggering and it's a disgusting example to set for readers; I don't think fiction can't portray toxic/abusive relationships, but framing them as romantic or desirable sends a really dangerous message.

I had a Hardin in my life for six years. I almost ended up doing something very bad to myself, because in the end I saw it as the only way to get away from that person. It was like my home was my prison. I also did seriously consider killing him, just to get out. He was a manipulative, cruel, jealous monster. After I left I've had to live with a concealed identity for several years, almost ended up being homeless because he took everything from me, not only a large sum of money and many years of my life, but also my self confidence, my self respect and my dreams for the future.
And that is what a Hardin does.

I actually started reading the Wattpad book, and the most recent scene I got to had Tessa getting mad at Harry (cause he's Harry Styles in the Wattpad book) because he 1) Entered her room and proceeded to insult her about the fact she had an alarm set (cause she was taking a nap or some crap) 2) Looked through her things, and 3) start taking out her things and stomping on her papers. Tessa knows he's rude, but then their faces get close and Tessa just?? Her anger is replaced with teenage hormonal sexual desire?? and they make out?? The conflict and Harry's complete disrespect is totally forgotten because Tessa wanted him to kiss and make out with her. It was really sickening.
If you want to read the story to make fun of it for how bad it is, go ahead. Otherwise, don't read it. It teaches terrible lessons on how a romance novel should be, and has one of the most toxic relationships I've seen in a book.
I totally agree, 100%!!! After is not a book for young people, it is awful. It’s not very well written at all, and I know this even though English isn’t my first language. Total lack of good role models and feminism.
But still I find myself fascinated by the story and in book 3 and 4 Tessa does leave Hardin to get out their toxic relationship, to find her true self and to live her own life. The books are still poorly written and the ending is not to my standards. But somehow the story got to me and I really love it. To my defense - I’m 36 years and I know the difference between fiction and reality. I can read a book and know that it doesn’t necessarily reflect how it should be in reality.

In the second book you find that this was all a bet (him getting close to her and all) and he actually shows the used condom and bloody sheets to his" friends" and she still dates him. This is the worst book I've ever encountered.

My problem with the book n about tessa is the fact that shes always like "oh, im not the same girl i used to be." But shows no signs of any type of character growth, shes still the same! NOTHING CHANGED, SHE STILL SUCKS!!
I know a lot of girls who have been pressured to lose their virginity and it was horrible for them. So it did piss me off when everyone was so fucking surprised when they find out Tessa is a virgin. Like, leave her alone.
The first time I have read "After" I was 16 years old and I thought it was so romantic that the good girl Tessa wants to make the bad boy Hardin a better person.
Now I am 24 - I have read the books again🙄... And wow I have changed so much that I cannot accept such kind of toxic relationship. Even if it's just a book series.
This book really sends a twisted message to young readers😏...

Heathcliff and Catherine's story is NOT to be read as a cute, sweet, "I want this" love story. It's a story of pettiness, misery, betrayal, revenge, selfishness and manipulation. Wuthering Heights is my favourite EngLit novel and I HATE these two shitty characters comparing themselves to Mr Darcy and Elizabeth AND Heathcliff and Catherine. It's foul, a disgrace to all Classic Literature.
Anyone who has read "After" (a """love story""") and says "Oh nice, it's like P&P or WH" hasn't understood either of these last books.
I feel so bad for Harry S. because he sends out completely opposite vibes than Hardin and he's still pulled into that kind of shuuut.

Personally I cannot stand hypocrites and Tessa was one of the most hypocritical people in the universe and she was the reason I hated this book so much. Yeah, I was pretty much all bad, but Tessa... Ugh I hated her so much. I thought you were supposed to see yourself in main characters and love them and root for them... UGH
Edit: I feel I need to clarify that what Tessa was going through is horrific and there were points where I did genuinely feel for her, but she isn't an overly great person either. I dont want to undermine the absolutely awful circumstances of her relationship because her situation was very clearly abusive
For me, that I openly will say I was in an abusive and unhealthy relationship, reading a book which glorifies that makes me sad. It's this the society? I forced myself to read it, and cry a lot of times remembering my ex-bf touching me when I didn't want to, having sex with me when I was drunk or him telling me how I provoke that. Girls looking after this kind of guys, don't do it, listen to other people bc it's the worst thing that happened in my life. And the worst it's the breakup when you see yourself in the mirror and think how fat, ugly or idiot you are and that's why he dumps you. Anorexia, bulimia, and depression are some of the effects I suffered after everything. When I realised it wasn't my fault I was in such a deep hole I could barely take myself out. This author could think that's normal, but it's awful and makes you think you're the trash of the relationship when there's a fight or a breakup. Please, don't follow her step on the perfect relationship, from the bottom of my heart I beg you that
okay so i literally just finished reading the first book about 10mins ago and had to get clarity. i found your video and i am pleasantly surprised to find that i am not going insane. at first i was like, okay this could be a cute romance story but then no jokes it makes me wanna scream. SO many times i screamed at the book whilst reading it, how could someone be so stupid to go back to a man whore who literally proved time and time again that he is the epitome of an asshole?!? this is too much to handle, helpppp!! but thanks for being the person to call it out publicly! i hope all the young persuaded readers can see your video and see that relationships should not be this way, it’s so unhealthy!!

See, this book series HELPED me rid of my abusive partner/ex. Reading everything I was going through, characters being so similar to myself and my partner at the time in real life and living life EXACTLY like After actually made me see that what I was going through wasn’t okay. Breaking up, making up, have that internal misogyny, just I was a living, breathing Tessa. And the guy I was with was a living, breathing Hardin. In the eyes of someone being emotionally abused, what you see isn’t what anyone else sees. Everyone else sees every problematic detail within the relationship, and tells you but you just deny it and go “But...”. I have changed as a person and I’m not so much like Tessa anymore, but yeah, I was a virgin until this partner and yeah my style and thought process and just everything about Tessa is/was me. When reading this book series, in my mind I was thinking “This isn’t okay, Tessa needs to leave him.” Whilst as the same time saying “Wow these characters are like ____ and I.” So eventually I added two and two together and left, which wasn’t easy considering I’m extremely forgiving and naïve, I know I am and I can’t help that. It really makes me mad that people are hating on a book that brings these kinds of relationships to light. If there weren’t books like this, I would still be manipulated into similar situations and being messed around a whole bunch. Yeah, it’s not good AT ALL for readers who are under the age of 18 (16 maybe but that’s a stretch) to be thinking it’s okay for someone to treat them like this or romanticise most of the events that occur. I think there should be a disclaimer at least, or even rewriting the book completely to apply the message to reach out if you’re in this situation because it’s not okay, if you experience this you should reach out, but a novel along the lines of, or this exact novel, shouldn’t be completely shut down and taken off the shelves because of a FICTIONAL relationship. As I said, reading this made me realise what I was going through and putting two and two together made me leave, but there should be age restrictions for the people who wouldn’t be old enough to understand or a disclaimer and numbers available for anyone experiencing similar situations.

You can tell that a lot of these newer YA writers read and fully internalised Twilight as the epitome of romance when they were younger.
What a lot of the After stans don't realize is that Hardin's abuse is absolutely no excuse for how toxic and awful he is.
I grew up in the era of Twilight and I remember actively defending those books to my friends (including the Renesmee shizz) but this...
I mean Twilight at least had some relatively interesting world-building, lore and fantasy elements, even if they were SIGNIFICANTLY underused and/or retconned...
What is the actual pull of these books? Is it the drama? The explicit sex? The fact that it's meant to be poor old Harry Styles? I don't understand it. Even the movie toned both Tessa and Hardin's assholery ALL the way down, but all that seemed to do was make the movie really slow and boring which is, frankly, extremely telling about what this author believes plot and character development are.

We tend to forget about this nowadays since movies and books like this one convey this wrong message that there isn’t love without pain which is wrong and leads to tolerating toxic relationships and frame them as “normal” relationships.

Basically the end of the third book is Tessa and Hardin not being together for like a year and she hate/dont like Hardin, they met at friends wedding and he just say ONE sentence about them being soul mates or some shit and she like fucking melts a says that she lovea HIM after a year of not being together.. Then theres Hardin banging Tessa on womens bathroom counter on friends wedding and he kinda proposed her and she said yes...Like inside of bathroom. She didnt even think about it... WHAT THE HELL

everything about this!!! Honestly the problems with After need to be called out! It’s not just the first book the entire series is a complete mess and sends extremely damaging messages to young girls. I really hope whenever the movie comes out people will stumble upon this and choose not to see it.
FullofLit a lot of people say that love ends up changing Hardin and idk like not only do I think that sends a horrible message to young girls to stay in bad relationships because they can change them, but it’s completely unrealistic! From everything I’ve heard about Hardin he’s got problems that only he can fix and no trying to diagnose him with any sort of mental illness but I think he sounds like he needs therapy.

They're changing the movie so it isn't as abusive, as the book. They're making Hardin's character much less of an asshole in the movie than in the book.

riley sunderland love doesn't change Hardin in the series at all.. I have read a few chapters from all the 3-4 books and he still stays an abusive, manipulative asshole.

In the trope I kind of hate is that the male character who supposed to be the love interest to the female and the male character is a very very very violent beating the s*** out of a person to death and become a serial killer
tessa is ok with hardens mean words and him beating people bc he means well and loves her. Tessa priorities are horrible

One of the biggest mistakes of my life if not the biggest mistake was to read this damn book.I don't even know why I went through such torture.I just kept thinking that maybe they would get better and they never did.

I kinda enjoyed it, because it brought back memories from my first "love" experience. I was head over heels in love with a guy who treated me so well when we would see each other, but then he would send me vengeful and downright mean messages saying that he s done with me, blocking me and then HE would be the one to contact me and say he's sorry. it was this circle that wouldnt stop, because i thought maybe just this once he would change:)) so i kinda understand the relationship between tessa and hardin and i wouldnt wish for something like that on anyone. Their story stuck with me, because of what ive experienced.
Its true that they get a happy ending, but guess what, that rarely happens in real life. I finally opened my eyes and ran for the hills after almost one full year of crying and going back and forth. when he would message me i started shaking like i was very cold and then it struck me that i was so anxious because of what he might say to me. it was awful, nobody had that control over me ever.

Honey, this is by far my favorite review of this book. I'm a writer and you've just inspired a new character for me. Don't ever change and never be afraid of putting your opinions out there.
I used to be in love with this series. I first read it on wattpad in 2014 and reread it when it was published. Now I’m 22 and rereading it again and it’s horrible. The grammar and just the content itself, is horrible. I never realized the abusive relationship at 18 years old but now I do (after learning it and being in one). I idolized this book so much, and it tries to teach the lesson that you can change a person or a person will change for you if they really love you. I got myself into an abusive relationship and would remember this book because Hardin “changed” for Tessa and Tessa stuck around. Not a good role modeling book for young girls. Also, Tessa is just dumb. She pisses me off so much because she’s hypocritical and immature. As much of an asshole Hardin is, I have to say I love his character change. He changes by working on his anger and becoming kinder. It’s not much but I like that part. Plus there’s way too much drama in such short period of times.
So this is just 50 shades for teens? ....fantastic. If we are going to continue the trend of turning fanfics into books and movies......can we at least pick the good ones?
i once read this creepypasta story that told the perspective of a fictional killer , and that story was more well - written and made me feel for the characters more than this bullshit ever could .
I am so sick of stories/movies like this blowing up in the box offices because of teen girls flocking to toxic Wattpad stories 🙄 TOXICITY IS NOT ROMANTIC! And that is the exact message I based my story around to send a message that some people can’t escape it and two of you can’t then you kill him. Simple.

if a wattpad story has 50 chapters. And one person reads all 50 chapters, that equals 50 reads. So divide After's views by 99 chapters and you'll get about 5 million people. 😧😧

Not to mention the way Anna Todd handles sexual assault in book 3 and used it as a story arc and completely disregards the seriousness of the topic and acts like it’s just another rift in their relationship

I just finished the book and this showed up in my recommended. This book was infuriating and toxic. It was amazing when I was 13/14 but rereading it now I’m so annoyed 🙄
I read the entire series and was appalled of the lack of focus on mental health. Todd could have used this as a platform to push for being healthy and mentally sound. Hardin needed therapy and Tessa needs friends!
on a serious note i read a lot of these types of fanfics when i was like 11-14 and it really messed me up like one of my closest friends got into an abusive relationship but i didn't notice it at all and even encouraged it bc it aligned with the idea of romance that i had learned from stories like this
