      After literally does not promote toxic relationships- it’s written from Tessa’s pov (the first one anyway,) and of course no ones going to sit there and think ‘oh my relationships bad, I should get out of it,’ and then stay in it, but even within Tessa’s ‘thoughts’ and ‘mindset,’ Anna puts so many almost ‘disclaimers’ in that say how bad Hardin treats her, how bad their relationship is, but that she finds herself unable to walk away, which yes, is NOT healthy, but is a very realistic situation that I myself have been in, it’s not glorified/romanticised at all 😕

    Girl, let me tell you. I’m studying to be a book editor, and in my Intro to Publishing class, my professor brought in a friend of Anna Todd’s who also writes on Watpad. She, backed up my professor, told us that fan fiction and romance like the stuff in After and Fifty Shades are popular because “it’s what women fantasize about”, so we need to start looking for more writers like that. Even if we may not think the relationships are healthy, it’s marketable and will attract a lot of buzz. I was sick to my stomach to hear someone say it’s better to give a toxic example of a relationship just to make more money

      Anna Rae
      So many things about your story make me angry, but the worst one is someone defending books like these with the argument, that “this is what women fantasise about.”
      Because fuck no, they don’t. Women fantasise about men, who are confident, experienced and sexually savvy. Not men, who run background checks on potential sexual partners, stalk them and emotionally manipulate them into having every aspect of their life controlled by an abusive sociopath.
      Your professor is bad and they should feel bad.

      Nice to fantasize until you realize you have subconsciously adopt this standard and ended up in a relationship of such abuse, either you wake up or you lie to yourself that it's normal. Speaking from my own experience here, married a man who exhibits all signs of the "ideal" YA BF. Attentive, protective, obssesive, controlling. Only last year when I told him i am preparing to leave him (calmly) did he admits his wrongdoings. We decided to work on our marriage of 9yrs. And he has changed a bunch since last yr but we know it's an ongoing process.

      @@steph2994 It did not help that the media shows true love as turmultous, a persistent stalker guy turns out he is simply your soulmate otherwise why cant he give up on you? Smh. If a person stalks another person, the former has serious issues, and dont expects him to suddenly respect your privacy or treat you as a living being with your own emotions and reasonings, not when he becomes your bf, your husband or father of your child. Toxic relationships encourage you to remain in said relationship until it's too late (physical abuse, mental abuse). I will tell any girl who wish to "conquer" a "bad boy" to run fast and far. There is no scenario in which the girl emerges unscathed (note, i have had suicidal thoughts after years of gaslighting by my bf/husband). And you think i would recognize such signs easily because i had an abusive father growing up. And because my husband never lay a hand on me (unlike my physically abusive father), i drew the line there and kept explaining away signs of mental abuse.

    I absolutely agree with everything 100% and I hate when people say “it’s just a book.” I disagree. Young people are reading books to relate to something and to escape sometimes and they are subconsciously taking in everything they read. I remember being a 12 year old reading Twilight for the first time haven’t never dating anyone in my life and I worshiped that relationship and when I was older, I didn’t make the best dating choices. It’s so important young people realize this stuff and avoid books like this, and for parents to as well before buying their kids books to read.

      @haggisa Před 4 lety +36

      Lulu Love
      Exactly. I’d also mention, that when people sit down to read in order to unwind or escape their daily lives, their minds are more susceptible to absorbing the messages within the book they’re reading, since they’re already in a relaxed state and are likely not analyzing the text critically.
      That’s the reason corporations use product placement in films - so they will fly under the radar of the viewer’s conscious mind. Only harmful themes in fiction are easier to disguise, since the author can give countless reasons, for why the abuse the reader is seeing is not in fact abuse, but an expression of love. You can gaslight the person reading for chapters on end, which makes romanticisation of abuse downright sinister.

      I agree. However, I am for absolute freedom of writing. I don't even think books featuring criminal topics (e. g. An underage incest love story, pedophilia romance or a seriel killer POV) should be prohibited or taboo in any way. Writing is art and art shalt know no taboos.
      Yet, I absolutely support there should always be a blacklist of books dedicated to adults only. And such books should not be legal to purchase or read by minors whatsoever. Meaning it's criminal if parents let their children read it, too. Adversiting such books is limited to borderline absence.
      But as a reasonable adult I want to be able to get my hands on such books if I desire. Legally.

Like, I can see arguments being made if the MC is trapped in an unhappy relationship (though that can only be stretched so far), but I think it's so gross when cheating is brought up but never discussed.

    The truly sad part is I have witnessed younger girls defending Hardin in CZcams comments of other videos talking about this book (I don't know if they are younger but I'm assuming so). For example, somebody pointed out the fact that in one of the books Hardin recorded himself having sex with a girl w/o her consent and posted it online and practically ruined her life (before being with Tessa). A girl responded back to the comment and said "yes but Hardin felt terrible for what he did and the girl ends up being happy with another guy and having a child."
    Great job, Anna Todd. As long as the victim ends up having a child with someone else, your character shall be forgiven. Seriously, I didn't know how Hardin was going to get out of that one but you nailed it. Amazing.

    • @raerivers
      @raerivers Před 4 lety +4

      No- you’re so wrong, I literally don’t even have words. Anna never ‘justifies’ Hardin’s actions because the person he hurt ended up engaged and with child, literally never. Even after Hardin found out that the woman was happy, he still felt horrific for the damage he’d caused- rightfully so- and believed himself to be a bad person undeserving of Tessa’s love.
      But no matter what disclaimers you give, people who aren’t biologically or mentally mature enough for things with still do it anyway, such as reading After, which is especially common because books don’t exactly have clear age guidelines the same way movies do. So of course someone will read After and make a silly excuse for Hardin/Hardin and Tessa’s relationship because they’re not at a level of maturity to fully understand what they’re reading, that’s no ones fault except their own and possibly their guardians.

    • @hailey7368
      @hailey7368 Před 4 lety +38

      @@raerivers how can I be wrong when this is something I've witnessed? Just because Anna never justifies his behavior, doesn't mean she's not setting a shitty example regardless. She wrote these characters to end up together which they do. Has she ever acknowledged that it's a terrible relationship and they shouldn't be together? And this is only a story and that girls shouldn't think it's healthy? No. She hasn't. Therefore, it's a poor example of a romance.
      I do agree that parents or guardians should set a better example in helping their kids to understand but Anna is still at fault.

    • @raerivers
      @raerivers Před 4 lety +1

      @Haileybrae95: What I was calling wrong was your second paragraph where you sarcastically congratulated Anna Todd on having Hardin be justified and forgiven purely because someone be hurt got a ‘happy ending.’ That is what I was calling wrong. And you’re wrong again, Anna indeed HAS acknowledged that their relationship is toxic and in real life it would have such a limited likelihood of working out, she’s even said on stories and live-streams that she hopes anyone who meets their ‘real life Hardin’ ‘runs the other way.’ So please don’t spread false information purely because you haven’t bothered to research the actual facts. All throughout the book and her social media- mostly Instagram stories over posts- she talks about how Hardin and Tessa’s relationship is not realistic and how she hopes fans don’t go looking for a similar relationship. So.
      And it really is NOT Anna’s fault, same as how you’re unable to blame a movie giving a child nightmares when said movie has an 18+ rating. I know books don’t have clear age ratings, but it’s a coming of age/young adult book, so no one who doesn’t withstand the mental capability to distinguish between healthy and toxic relationships shouldn’t even be picking up After.

When I told her that I was considering quiting, because I was having trouble making the grade, and I didn't have the money to tough it out, she asked me if there was anything I was spending money on besides what I'd already told her about. I explained that I was giving monthly payments to a children's charity, and she immediately told me to drop it, that my future was more important. I explained that I've lived with poverty my whole life, and that I couldn't let some kid, who was even worse off suddenly get cut off from a source of revenue because I had a selfish desire to accrue massive amounts of student loan debt on a longshot of a career. Not long after that she basically wouldn't speak to me anymore.
      Later we re-established contact, things were going well. I asked her if there might be a future for us, and she brought up my refusal to stop giving to charity to pay for school, I believe saying something along the lines that it proved I was a good person to her, and I said that I didn't know why she would bring that up, since shouldn't the opposite be true, that her demanding that I "drop the kid" would prove she's *not* a good person, and she responded "No it's okay though. You passed!" I just lost it, I asked if she was really saying she tested me, and how I could posibbly believe that, considering she basically stopped speaking to me when I refused to do things her way, and she got really upset and said she couldn't believe I was yelling at her over the phone.

    We REALLY need to start holding the female authors that make books romanticizing abuse accountable (be it the guy or girl doing it - looking at you, Anna & the French Kiss). You should absolutely write what you want, but you need to be conscious of the message you're giving if you're going to publish it. The lack of self-awareness from the authors in these types of stories is scary. At least make it abundantly clear that such behavior isn't okay.

      But Anna Todd doesn’t excuse it because he’s ‘hot’ or ‘damaged,’ she makes it crystal clear consistently that his treatment is wrong and their relationship is undesirable through the effect that it has on Tessa. I agree that Hardin is romanticised, but how could he not be when the book is written through Tessa’s thoughts and views? Of course she excuses him, but through Tessa’s short and long term reactions to Hardin’s manipulation and emotional abuse quite clearly shows that his actions are incredibly wrong and their relationship is extremely unhealthy, if you’re the target audience for this book.

I only stay because he has changed a lot since our very serious but calm talk about his behaviour and how it affected me (walking on eggshells everyday, yup). I have even seen similar stories were the whole thing ended in the love interest planning to beat up the ex or platonic best friend of the girl-protagonist out of jealousy. Even if she stops him that's no romance any more, this guy needs preventive detention and a psychiatrist immediately.

    Part of the problem with this book is that it encourages a much bigger problem: the romanticism of abusive relationships. Abusers will often use language like “*only you* understand me”, “I *need* you”, “we/you are special”, as a way to make the victim feel important. They’ll frame their abuse as reactions to how much they love you, for example “I can’t help but be jealous, I just love you so much”. And when other people speak against the relationship the abuser will turn it against them, and make it seem like it’s just you two against the world, so you feel like you’re in this together and no one else understands. This book is literally a guide to abusing and controlling a SO!!!

    I read After in 2019 and have 37 pages of notes that have not manifested as a full, coherent review yet. There's so much wrong with this book and nothing right. My biggest issue is with authors like Anna Todd, Colleen Hoover, etc., who are often married, have kids, and/or have a background in something that would identify the red flags of an abusive relationship (Colleen Hoover, for example, was a licensed social worker). They may recognize that these relationships are toxic and dangerous, or that there is some sort of a sexual fantasy component to it (i.e., the bad boy). However, they do a poor job at this by marketing their work towards the preteen/YA audience where they are still learning about the world and making sense of the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions, especially when it comes to romantic relationships. Sadly, publishing companies that prey on naive girls and their vulnerability make these forms of media more profitable and readily available. As a young 20-something year old woman, reviews like yours point out how wrong this material is and how we really need to change the conversation about how young people view romance and sexuality.

    THANK GOD!
    I started reading this book because a friend of mine was fangirling over it and wanted me to read it too after it was announced that it was going to be turned into a movie. And I begrudgingly agreed. I started reading it and I was immediately disturbed. Tessa starts out as a good, innocent girl. Her life wasn't fulfilling, ok, I get it. But she went against EVERYTHING she was when she saw Hardin. The first thing that happens is actually cheating and she doesn't even feel bad for it. Nor does Noah blame her as much as he should. What does this convey? It's fine to cheat if it means getting someone you want. IT'S NOT. And every single event that happens after that is just not ok. It's toxic and it's a relationship that shouldn't be rooted for. It doesn't teach anything good. It even falsely portrays that being a good girl is bad!
    I wanted to give up on the book so many times. It didn't really interest me much, but I kept reading until the end of the first book because my friend loved it so much and wanted me to read along with her. I gave up on the second book, though. It was bad for my emotional sanity. The writing is engaging but the content is emotionally and morally disturbing.... I can't understand how she, or anyone for that matter, can like it so much and fangirl over it when it's so.... toxic...
    I thought I was the only one thinking this, so thank you so much for your honest review. People really shouldn't read this, unless they want to get brainwashed into thinking toxic relationships are romantic. My heart aches at the thought that young girls read this and internalized Tessa and Hardin's relationship as good romance :(

I'm NOT crazy!" and this was before this book was ever published. it continues to stigmatize OCD and other non-violent (but difficult to deal with) disorders the way society always has and continues to do. That truly upset me.

    This is the Christmas gift I didn’t know I needed. Delicious. 😈
    Edit: I really appreciate you making a veritable checklist of all the things, that make Harden and Tessa’s relationship abusive and toxic.
    Even though other people have already ripped this book to shreds here and in blogs (Jenny Trout, f.e.), there’s no such thing as too much critique of romanticisation of abuse, especially considering that films like “The Kissing Booth” and “Sierra Burgess is a Loser” keep being made. Seriously, what is it with Hollywood, and making emotional deception or bets, that make the romantic leads lie and use the other main character an acceptable plot point in romantic movies aimed at teenagers? “She’s All That” was twenty years ago and it seems producers of those types of films haven’t learned a single thing in that time period. Move on, people! It’s high time.
    Also, I loved the structure of this review. Choosing to shoot each segment in a different setting and clothes gave the video an elegant, funky feel and made it look that much more deliberate.
    I liked how you positioned yourself as a more professional looking person- wearing a jacket and sitting in front of a desk - when talking about the structural problems of the text, and then switched it up with a more relaxed setting and style of dress, when you talked about how horrible all the characters were - almost as if you were gossiping with us about those completely unlikeable people in a club bathroom. Was the choice of locations a deliberate decision, made so that each segment would have a different feel? 😊
    P.S. I know the issue of romanticised abuse is something prevalent in general fanfiction and even many romance novels, but nowhere are its effects as apparent as on Wattpad. I was recently on there, looking for an engaging BDSM romance to read, and it was completely heartbreaking and frustrating seeing hordes of young readers praise the god-awful and harmful depiction of BDSM (written by obviously ignorant authors), as something that helped them learn about the lifestyle. It was like seeing real time reactions fans of “Fifty Shades of Grey” must have had, when the book first came out. Nothing is more dangerous, than readers thinking they are learning something valuable, when absorbing abuse disguised as romance. It’s so goddamn sad.

    ALL books that have sexual violence and assault have warnings and are mostly intended for older audiences. I understand when people say, oh if its not your type of genre dont read it! Anna did give a warning in between chapters, but she knew that younger audiences are gonna read the book, so she was way outta line. It should have never been an idea.

    Jordan I love u for this video. The glorification of dysfunctional relationships is so detrimental. many girls are getting into these kinds of relationships because they see it portrayed. Luckily, I'm about to turn 25 and well aware of which books I like and won't like, so I've never read After. I did realize though, upon watching your video, how I probably would've read and liked it when I was younger. Looking back at all the romanticized toxic relationships I adored growing up, in books marketed at my very demographic, it's sickening how I now feel lucky to never have accepted such behavior in my real life.
    Getting educated on abusive relationships and learning how to identify them in books is one of the most important things I've learned, and felt I had to comment and applaud you for taking a stance and bringing awareness to such an important topic. Reviews like yours could literally save lives, and hopefully, your video will reach the right viewers. Keep up the good work, following you into 2020 feels like the biggest privilege!

    (I realise I’m a bit late lol) Anyway, on a serious note, I feel so bad for Harry Styles, knowing that this is attached to him. Also, girls in my year group have watched the movie (some have read the book as well) and I’m worried that this will be their idea of a healthy relationship. It does break my heart that girls I know will see this and think that Harden (however you spell his name) and Tessa are in a healthy relationship together. It’s terrible. Thank you for the disclaimer, I saw some people read it for fun but no one brought up just how harmful this book is.

    I would like to share a personal story that is a great example of how much books like this can ruin peoples' lives.
    I read this book when I was an insecure teenager and at the point in my life, I fell in love with Hardin and the concept of fixing someone who needs you. Then when I started University I got myself a boyfriend who was almost exactly like him. He had an extremely traumatic childhood, he was toxic and jealous and he isolated me from everyone and manipulated me and abused me emotionally and verbally.
    Then I read the book again, which encouraged me to stay in this relationship thinking I could still fix him and become happy.
    But people like that don't change. I lost two years from my life. And now I am the one that has to recover from all the trauma.

    There's no better way than to spend my new year's eve watching rant reviews 😅
    I read After when I was like 15 years old and I didn't see any of the problematic things the book has. I guess it was because everyone and there mother raved about it so I overlooked certain aspects.
    One good thing that came out of this disaster of a book was the fact that I started to improve my English, I know this book is not well written but at that time my English was only at basic school level English. After was so popular that Todd gave permission to other wattpad writers to translate her book in different languages. When I got into the fandom, I searched for fanfiction and I read the translated version because I didn't think I could read it in English. However, I caught up with the translated work and was forced to read it in English because I couldn't wait any longer. When I realized that I was capable of doing it I started to read "real" books in English as well which let me to college where I'm now studying English as my major.
    I know this book is terrible and shouldn't have gotten the attention it did but I don't think I would have found my passion for English if it wasn't for this awful book.
