Its True, Light had all the right intentions in the biggining. But thowrdes the end he was too drunk from the power of the death note, which led to his demise. While Laluch never forgot his goal, and he clearly felt everytime that he had to sacrifice or kill someone. Euphmies death and sharlys injury and Rollos hit me hard.

I much prefer Lelouch as a character, Code Geass being my favorite anime of all time. What really puts Lelouch above Light for me is their philosophy, and the philosophies of Code Geass in general. Death Note touched on Philosophy some but like L admitted at one point, it wasnt really about philosophy as much as it was just about their own egos. Neither Light’s or L’s philosophy is overly relatable. Light became a serial killer to become a god and L will do absolutely anything in his power to stop him, no matter the cost. Most people cannot relate to either of those. However, in Code Geass, there are 3 main parties and all of them are relatable and none of them are more right than the others. Charles believes that the world would be a better place if no one ever died and everyone could be reunited with everyone they have lost. He believed people should live in the past. Schneizel believes the world would be best off if it feared a higher power, so he created one. This is similar to Light’s philosophy but lacking the ego that really made Light’s philosophy unrelatable. Schneizel created the Damocles to be this higher power, and to create peace through fear. He wanted a constant state of now, where nothing ever improved nor got worse. Finally, Lelouch wanted to unite the world against a common enemy, and show it that it can work together and it can be peaceful. He wanted people to work towards the future, so he created a path for them. And in the end, every character gave into the idea that the ends justify the means, because they understood sacrifice couldnt be avoided. Code Geass simply had way more in depth philosophy than Death Note.

@@cormacb2326 And it does that well, but Code Geass was also a battle of wits anime, except without making the philosophy and characters lesser, as Code Geass made the characters and philosophy all a part of that battle of wits, Lelouch's strategies altered as his character and philosophies developed in a way to match that development. And thats what makes Code Geass and Lelouch a much more compelling character for me, I understand him better as a character and therefore can relate to his philosophies and see how that affects the strategies. You just don't get that in Death Note.

Yeah but Deathnote does it better. I mean I just got this pointed out to me and feel like an idiot for not realising it sooner but Lelouch could have just revealed his identity publically before he became Zero, went to Pendragon and then used his geass to make everyone else his slaves when the cameras were off. Sure officially he wouldn't have any claim to the throne but he'd have controlled the holy Britanian empire, then he could just use geass to conquer the Chinese federation and the EU, then after that killed the Emperor so Odys or Schneziel could have become the new Emperor and used them to liberate all areas. Probs could geass most important nobles too. Sure this may not have actually worked with the Emperor in power since he had geass himself but there is no Lelouch would know that. Also a shit ton of Deus Ex Machina happens and while I do think Lelouch is a smart character who does smart things he gets so lucky so many times. Plus Lelouch's enemies aren't as smart as L so its not really a battle of wits one person is just dominating. Near in the manga is actually a real human who makes real deductions rather then pulling shit out of his ass. He is also a character rather then a plot device which is nice. You also get to see Mello having one thicc brain in the manga unlike in the anime.

    True..
Also, Lelouch is self-aware that he is doing wrong the whole time n he was ready to accept the consequences.
He was responsible n mature at the same time practical n non-idealistic (opp. to Suzaku).
Lelouch does what he does initially to protect his beloved sister n seek seem revenge against Britannia. He later realizes that his mission representd something larger than his own tiny personal reasons n he steps up to the act. He at times have behaved irresponsibility but he always assumed responsibility for that later n carried the burden too the way along. Then he realized without dirtying hands he can't change the world and he does all the horrible things he does but he always was self-aware n knew he has to take responsibility for his actions.
Lelouch had stronger ideals n he was ready to accept his misconceptions n grow from his mistakes, hence strengthening his ideology as a whole.
    ****
On the other hand, Light is immature, irresponsible, his self-proclaimed justice, egomaniac, egotist, and most of all a hypocrite who doesn't feel any responsibility towards the consequences of his actions n got consumed by the power n in satisfying his ego.
Light is a first class HYPOCRITE who thinks he is always right even when he is doing the devil's work in its worst form. He doesn't care for anyone n becomes ready to kill innocence just because they oppose him. Initially his intentions were pure but light is a weak minded brat n a sore-loser who tries to satisfy his god-complex forgetting why he stayed it all.
Light's ideology to eliminate wrong doers is fine but he loses that very quickly. Light doesn't have a strong ideology to guide him. He is guided by his ego and self-preservation n god complex in the guise of justice.

Ironically upon deeper thinking I think the more comparable person to Kira is Schneizel, and lelouch even says my reasoning. Both Schneizel and Kira looked down from on high as rulers and deliverers of what was needed without regard for the individual lives, happiness or reasonings of the people they proclaim to help. While on the other hand lelouch has live among the people and loves them. When he hurts them he truly feels remorse even as he continues to hurt them because he needs to make the ends justify the blood already shed.
Both schneizel and Kira had good intentions, but lacking understanding of the people and their perspectives led them to make choices that ultimately harmed them in ways they couldn't even understand let alone sympathize with because conceptually their plans created better worlds in their heads.

Lelouch has eternal youth but not full immortality, meaning he could still die if fatally wounded and can be vulnerable to others Geass. A pure immortal can't have both geass and code at the same time, plus is not affected by others Geass. The whole resurrection thing was just fanservice in au universe. when i first saw death note i loved Light Yagami, he had great philosophies that if you try to think like him is easy to understand where he comes from. I loved how smart he was because his intelligence made him more appealing than any anime character i have ever seen making him my favorite main character. The outsmarting and dedication to change the world are really appealing to all that watch. i love that he uses the death note to the maximum extend testing its capabilities. The ending was so great i thought no anime can surpass this one. this was my mindset for awhile. "i want a new anime where the MC is as smart as light and it has to have an appealing story"
AND CODE GEASS CAME INTO MY LIFE.
Lelouch is my all time favorite character. His philosopies is some i myself have thought myself before for example "the ends justify the means"
Code geass took only a few minutes to get me hooked and trust me i was so impressed when lelouch was litterally destroying the britannians with a small terrorist group out smarting everyone and killing clovis. and trust me i was Screaming on top of my longs when lelouch became emperor and took over the damocles "ALL HAIL LELOUCH"
the reason i like Lelouch more is that he didnt become a coward and he stuck by his morals. Light as you said killed those who got in his way and justifies it as acts against god but he had said kira's purpose was only to kill people who have done bad, and the ending where he becomes almost like an animal running scared into the wall begins to show just how far light has gone. he is animalistic and when he gets shot he asks where the hell everyone is "where's misa?" "where's takada?" and he had discarded them away.
Lelouch stuck to his morals and he even accepted death following his first ever qoute that everyone would remember "the only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed!"
    All. Hail. Lelouch vi britannia

Kira Pretty much died the moment light was found out and with it the new world he was trying to create as it crumbled right before his eyes at the moment of his death when he didnt saw anyone but himself die and in the aftermath crime went back to normal and even so some still see him as a god now the world views kira as the most powerful terrorist in history instead of a being of justice (wich in my humble opinion rightfully so)
Zero on the other hand lives on both figurately as Suzaku portrays him now.and as Lelouch's safeguard for his new world after his death.the people now sees him and the black knights as heroes of justice who took down the corruption of britania and created a free yet united world for all to rejoice specially his beloved sister

A bit late but I would still like to share my thoughts. Light created a reason so he can put himself in a position of power. Lelouch, on the other hand, put himself in a position of power for a reason. Light saw the world as a rotten place filled with many injustices (which is true) and him being praised for being exceptional throughout his life, he took on the opportunity to become a figure many would both fear, respect, and revere; "God of the new world" as he would say. While he claims what he is doing is for "justice", I think he only liked the power his actions granted him hence why he lost sight of his actual goal. Lelouch on the other hand, he does things out of personal vendetta, both hatred and love. He knew exactly what he wanted which I believe was caused by a series of traumatic events in his childhood. I think his convictions were a lot stronger because they were born out of love towards his sister and hatred towards those who have wronged him. I also notice that he's rather concerned as to why he's doing the things he does hence why he never lost his objective. An example would be when he fled a battle just to save the root of his cause, Nunnally, worrying that everything he has done up till now would be utterly meaningless. No matter how many times Nunnally gets in his way, defies him or even opposes him, he once never considered harming her (even if he did, it's probs just an act) because she is the reason why he is willing to shed blood and dirty his name, she is the reason why he wants to create a 'peaceful' and gentler world. Light, on the other hand, he was willing to kill his little sister if she got in his way. Also, like you mentioned in the video, Lelouch is a lot more self-aware, knows that what he's doing is atrocious and is prepared for the consequences brought upon by his actions. As for Light, he is convinced that he is doing the right thing and he's afraid to face the truth of his actions. I think this is the biggest contrast between Light and Lelouch; one believes what they are doing is just, one knows what they are doing is corrupted and knows the negative impact their actions hold. Light's worst nightmare is death, despite doing it onto others, Lelouch was prepared to die from the very beginning. Overall, Lelouch is just a lot more human hence why I hold a preference towards him. Don't get me wrong, I think Light is a brilliant character as well as the message that Death Note wanted to but I just think he seems a bit heartless and looks at things from a very black and white perspective. Lelouch just has a lot more depth and more growth. Anyways both are great!

I think the difference between Lelouch and Light's reaction to power lies in their upbringing. Light was raised in modern Japan, where he saw all the problems within their society from the point of view of an ordinary person, and took action based on that. Lelouch meanwhile, was born the 11th prince of one of the world's superpowers, but was exiled to Japan where he lived for a while at almost the same level as the oppressed Japanese, until he was admitted to a Britannian school. Lelouch saw all parts of society first-hand, and realized that everyone was striving towards a happier future. Thus his grand ambition of granting the world its wish never escaped his mind. Light, meanwhile, lost his humanity once he gained power, as he was comparatively biased and egotistical.

great analysis. Most of people who compare them are merely interested in who's smarter, wich is a question impossible to answer (they use their minds in different fields. Yes, they're both strategists, but Lelouch is a militar strategist in a literal war, what is different from the investigation game between Light and L) and also boring to me. Who cares about who's smarter? They're both smart, let's move on from this part.
You said well, Lelouch was self-aware. Also, unlike Light, he tought about what kind of word he would leave behind. He create a better word to people live in after his death, while Kira's utopia could only exist while Light was alive. The manga make very clear that the crimes came back to normal after Light's death, as soon as people started realizing Kira wasn't there to punish them.
I would also linke to point out how they see the "normal" people. While Lelouch is not satisfied with the society he lives in and his own classmates incorpores a lot of what he despices in said society, he's still able to make bounds with those people and truly cares about his friends and Nunally. While Light was completly bored with the ordinary and gladly left it behind, Lelouch sacrificed the ordinary for a greater cause. But he loved the careless times with his friends. He apologized for not being able to keep a silly promise about lighting firworks with his friends or something like that (its been a while since I watched), because that promise represented a ordinary highschool life with friends.

The interesting thing to think about is that they would each do better in the others shoes. Light could handle Lelouch's situation much easier with his Death Note, and Lelouch could handle Light's situation better with his Geass. Their powers, while seemingly overkill, were pretty evenly scaled to the difficulties they faced. Yet I don't imagine they would get along in the same world seeing as how their motives conflict heavily. It's really impossible to predict what would happen as it's entirely hypothetical and there are so many possibilities to consider, but I imagine it would be more complex and dramatic than either show since they would both pose a massive threat to the other and both utilize the other's weaknesses. Lelouch hides behind a secret identity and Light has the ability to take Lelouch's pieces off the board. And truth be told, Light's Death Note and other abilities (like his oft overlooked engineering and hacking skills) could be used way better than they were in the anime, while Lelouch's I feel was used expertly. Remember that retrospect can make most things look simpler than they are to deal with. I personally believe that Lelouch would win against Light for various reasons I'll not add to this already long comment. But I'm not going to say it's impossible for Light to win either. It would be incredible to watch and I'm more curious how they would try to use each other on the way to each other. I wish more animes did crossovers. It would really open up so many doors for magic to happen. I can even imagine an even more impossible to predict scenario where Lelouch in C's world and Light as a Shinigami battle for the fate of the world from beyond it.
But to the point of this video, I would rather follow Lelouch. His ideals made more sense to me and were much purer at heart. In truth I wouldn't follow either of them and think they are both creating a stupid amount of unnecessary suffering, but just for the sake of comparing them, I much prefer Lelouch's philosophy. It was much more grounded, coming from a purer place and more thought out. It was also more contagious and so was always more likely to succeed as an idea is more powerful than a man, which is the irony of this discussion. Lelouch's philosophy was more refined. Light's was basically Sniezels. Peace through fear which makes absolutely no sense. With light everything was black and white. His philosophy didn't evolve, but rather devolved as he did. So without question, on the merit of their philosophies alone, I'd take Lelouch's more humanistic and progressive approach to Light's playing God's approach. Another way to put it is that if I had to walk in either of their shoes, I would choose Lelouch.

    @nadezdaryzhkova9584 Před 2 lety +3

Thank you for an interesting overview.
I would like to add a little thing that I think make the difference very clear from the beginning.
Light, while claiming that he stands for justice and want to make a world a better place, does nothing initially when the woman is harassed by bikers right in front of his eyes, and uses the Note only to test it. Nothing like interfering (while he has great physical shape, he would have a fair chance against probably drunken guys) or at least calling the police from the guy who aims to be a policeman.
Lelouch gets into the situation which ends in him gaining Geass when he, just a high schooler who claims not to care about unfamiliar people, is the only one who actually comes to check if the people in a fallen trunk need help, amidst the sea of spectators who just make photos of the accident. That's why you believe him when he says he wants to make a difference. Because he is already making a difference with each chance he gets, even when he has no powers.
That foreshadows the future of both characters. Their choices in the very beginning.
Both series are about using enormous power and the importance of connection with other people. But I agree with another comment, while Code Geass is a story about the way to do it right, given the circumstances, Death Note is a story about the wrong way to go and the places dishonesty with yourself and megalomania take you.
Both stories are great, but the only reason to compare Lelouch and Light is to see that difference. It's not even a competition.

I favor Lelouch. I believe Light Yagami's most fatal flaw in this fight is his child-likeness. And Light Yagami makes too many mistakes such as killing the FBI agent and challenging L. In my opinion, Light Yagami tends to rush things and take risks that aren't necessary. Lelouch on the other hand is more mature, takes things cautiously, and like what Daniel D already said "The biggest difference between Light and Lelouch is simple. Lelouch never lost his humanity."
Lastly is the power- The Death Note or Code Geass. I also believe the power's are equal. One can be better than the other depending on different situations and scenario.

Light does face the world's greatest detective the genius from Wammy's House L. C.C helps Lelouch and cares for him to some degree enough to help him. Ryuk makes it clear to Light he was not on his side nor L's. Lelouch like Itachi portrayed himself as the villain, however they both meant to achieve peace in their own way even if it meant their reputation was soiled. Sasuke's revolution and how he told Naruto he would become the shadow or the one to walk in darkness even if it meant being hated as long as the peace his late elder brother Itachi envisioned would be realized. With Lelouch a similar even if he became emperor of the Britania and everyone ends up hating him by having Zero kill him thus unifying Japan, Britania and the World against Lelouch. Leloiuch dies, however achieves his goal.

Lelouch did lose it a couple times, I will admit. But light never really had it in the first place. He killed a woman that loved him and used her for his own objectives. He did the same with misa. He also took advantage of mikami’s devotion to him, even claiming he didn’t know him in the end. Everyone there heard him say “I guess I won, Near”, yet he still chose to try to take blame off of himself. Even when he was shot TWICE he still tried to use his own blood to kill them. Light lost his marbles when he started using the death note.

    • @morisawestfield6030
      @morisawestfield6030 Před 3 lety +13

Lelouch is not in an alternate world. His world is just as real as Light’s. They both received a supernatural power that ended up helping them achieve their goals. The difference is Light’s goal was unrealistic from the jump. Light was using his power to kill people to create a new world and become “god”. If you think about it practically, even if you kill criminals, they will never stop rising. Therefore, he would have to go on killing criminals forever. There was no way he could bring an end to evil by killing criminals. Lelouch on the other hand used his power to create a world where everyone is free and equal, where the world is at peace for the most part. He actually did lose his mind a couple times, but I don’t think he ever lost his humanity and his morals. While light eventually used everything in his arsenal (including those who loved and admired him) to achieve his goal, Lelouch never used any of his comrades the way light did. Similar to the way light used Kira, Lelouch used zero and the black knights as a symbol of justice for the people to follow. The big difference is zero and the black knights kinda were justice, Kira was not. I love light and Lelouch, but code geass is not less realistic simply because light lost his morals and humanity and watched his goals crumble.

Even between Johan Liebert and Light Yagami, I would say Johan was better at achieving everything Light wanted to achieve. He was the better one, not in terms of humanity, both had none, but in terms of sticking to their ideals throughout the end. Also unlike Light, Johan actually cared about some people, people he was ready to die for. Light only cared about himself.

The biggest difference between the teo is that Leouch is not afraid to take accountability when he fucked up . He realized he lost control of his Geass and has caused death of innocent people such as Euphy and Shirley and feels bad for it . He PLANNED is own death by Suzaku because he knew he is not God and should not take control of the people use his geass .
While Light Yagami is a teenager with a God complex and will kill anyone , including sacrifice life of innocent people because he is afraid to gets find out . He kills people and uses other people just so he can keep killing criminals when all he needs to do to get away is give up on his death note yet he is obsess with the power and died like a coward

The easiest way to compare leloush and light is comparing how they treat their sister.
Lelouch do everything for her and never put anything, himself included, above herr safety.
Light just use her sister as any tool and doesn't even care about her when she get hurt.
Conclusion: Lelouch is a good guy that is willing to do bad for his objective(his sister's future). Meanwhile light is just a full fledged bad guy who put himself above everything.
Both to me make for amazing MC, really hope to see more unique and interesting main characters instead of Kirito number xx.

Lelouch stood the test of time better than Light. We understand better now, ten years later, that people don't commit crimes solely for "evil" reasons, *gestures wildly to the school to prison pipeline, the prison industrial complex, the causation between poor infrastructure and crime rates, police brutality etc*, so Light's whole goal feels off from the start. Whereas Lelouch and his whole arc fits into the various current discourses surrounding social change: is it better to tear down an oppresive system because "the master's tools cannot destroy the master's house", or is it better to educate the oppressive group so to gain a measure of protection on the road for change, or should we follow Suzaku and work from the inside but how can we do that without it coming across as simply tokenizing? All interesting questions that Code Geass asked and is still asking

Light himself actually showed an understanding of this. When comparing the killings of Third Kira (Kyosuke Higuchi) to those of the First Kira (himself), he took note of the types of criminals that would be killed by the former but spared by the latter: those who killed unintentionally, who showed remorse for their actions, or who acted under excusable circumstances. Light defined the evil he sought to purge as intentional, unrepentant, and unpressured. His recognition of the nuances of crime allowed him to more easily believe in his moral superiority, and thus more eager to label those who opposed him as complicit in the world's evil.

Ok everyone always seems to say that Light had good intentions, but people, his intention was to create a world where no one ever committed crime, because if you commit crime you die. Basically just the death penalty for everything so no one commits crime out of fear. How is that a good intention? I never supported Light. Lelouch on the other hand did have justifiable intentions - create a better world for his sister by taking down a racist, brutal empire, and then eventually to create world peace. To me, Light and Lelouch started in very different places. Just my opinion though

It feels like it really does fit the context of each story.
It's not the same for one Crown Heritor than the Best Student of Japan. You grow up when you are aware that your choices affect lots of people. Light's thing was to him: Judging bad people one by one, I'm right so I can't commit errors. But Lelouch had to make large scale operations whichs needs more responsability beforehand.
