The Importance of the Kira Task Force in Death Note

Some say that Death Note is a battle between L and Light. A game of cat and mouse between the world's greatest detective and Kira. That interpretation of Death Note can be correct, but it undermines the importance of the Kira Task Force. L and Light's fight was often decided around the loyalty, trust, and compliance of characters like Soichiro Yagami, Matsuda, and Aizawa.

That's why, even though most don't like him that much, he is the most relatable and anyone that says that they're like any of the others is lying xd
I'd argue that Ryuk represents the viewer of the show best.
Matsuda's unrecognized talent was knowing when to draw his gun and fire. He didn't get to show that off until the very end, which was brilliant
0Hammerhead0 I agree completely. So many people just stand there doing nothing. But Matsuda takes action. In doing what he did, he didn’t only save Near’s life, but possibly the whole Task’s life.
Matsuda was never the brains of the taskforce, but he was always the heart.
@@significantinsignificance5348 He didn't save Near's life in any way. Light didn't know his name, so could not write it. Light only new the task force life names, not Near's team names
Andre Moya lol. Light did know Near’s name. Near showed it to him on Mikami’s fake death note. It was Nate River.

It's like that meme where L is holding a mug that says "Kira did everything wrong" and Misa, a mug that says "Kira did nothing wrong" ( Light I holding a mug saying "not Kira")
I just imagine you holing a mug like that with Matsuda.
Light without his death note memories is just a cooler, smarter Matsuda
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
Change my mind
Yeah I love Matsuda but he real dumb
I...I dont know how to feel about this. Like its accurate but you can say that about almost everyone cant you? Lights mom is just a female non police officer Matsuda. L is just a way smarter more quirky matsuda, The front right tire on the 5th car to be shown in the anime is just a more useful more rubbery matsuda
not too late to delete this
The fact that Matsuda is the actual member that stops Kira in the end, the only one brave enough to turn his gun to Light, proves him to be the best member of the task force.
Mikami was the best member of the Task Force. He worked for Light and pretended to worship him so that Light would eventually meet up with Near, then after messing up killing everyone in the warehouse on purpose, he let Near take all the credit and cause Light to come out and reveal himself as Kira. Mikami was even considerate enough to kill himself to cover up all the evidence so the Task Force didn’t have to explain the use of double agents and killing countless innocents in Light’s place. Master plan.
+Adam J. Harper
Well they couldn't have really just tackled Light because Light's plan was to distance himself away from them so that he'd have enough time to write Near's name; him not taking guns into account was his mistake. Though I do think the SPK members would have shot Light.
+Adam J. Harper
I wouldn't say so. What Mikami did was the best he could in the situation; it was Light's mistake for simply not telling Mikami that Light had a snippet of the Death Note with him. Mikami had no choice but to go and kill Takada because otherwise it would have been over but because Light never told Mikami of the snippet and simply assumed "don't do anything till the final meeting", which doesn't take into account emergency situations, would actually work on the extremely independent Mikami, Mikami's only option was going to the real notebook.
+Adam J. Harper
Again, Light never accounted for *emergencies* when he said that... it was just too much of a risk for Mikami to not do what he did from his perspective.
There's also the fact that Mikami, if he had common sense (which I know he did because he's intelligent as hell), could have simply torn out some pages of the DN when going to the bank because he literally _knew_ that Near is following him _to_ the bank... which just points to Near using the Death Note for me.
We get it, you like Light. He dead, move on.
Lights Fathers death is the saddest scene in the series.
1. He dies thinking his son isn't Kira aka he dies believing a lie and not finding the truth
2. Kiras most cold blooded moment: tries to make his father write Mellos name before dying (which would deny him access to heaven or hell)
3. His fathers heroic action to take the eye offer was meaningless, since Mello escaped without getting his face revealed to anyone but him.
Odin Forfang regarding #2, I thought it was established that there was no afterlife for anyone. IIRC, Ryuk tells him that shortly before writing his name in the Death Note in the manga.
Still, I agree that even if there was an afterlight in this universe, he would’ve done he same thing, cuz Light gave no fucks about anything by that point.
KariIzumi1 it was but I’m pretty sure it was only confirmed in the manga
@@blizzyyt2281
It was confirmed in the anime but only in the "Death Note rule" screen.
Except it states throughout the series and manga heaven and hell dont exist they go to a place called MU nothingness,
Odin Forfang Actually, Light’s father’s heroic action to take the Shinigami eyes wasn’t meaningless, as he did discover and share Mello’s name with it. This later on led to Mello’s death.
But I agree with your other points.
"Light.. you're really not Kira. I'm.. so glad." That line will always BREAK MY FREAKING HEART!! After everything Souichiro went through, the lengths he had gone to capture Kira and obtain justice, he deserved to know the truth of it all in the end. He deserved so much better.
I think it would have been depressing if he knew the truth because that would have broken his heart . Sometimes a lie is better than a bitter truth.
He technically should’ve seen that Lights life span was short before he died
sad Technically speaking, Light's life span was likely longer, since it Ryuk who ended up killing him in the end.
In fact, Ryuk implies that Light wasn't actually shot fatally, as he references him going to prison.
I read the manga and was close to crying xd
That line was a relief, at least he gets to die happy and not have his entire purpose ripped out from underneath him
It always kills me to remember Matsuda of all people killed Light. _Matsuda._ Floppy-haired, doe-eyed, bumbling, coffee boy Matsuda. The embodiment of the innocent people Light wanted to protect, only wanting to help others, be useful, and make the world a better place. He basically agreed with Kira’s ideals, if not his methods, and always vehemently believed in Light’s innocence, all the way to the finale. It’s almost as if Light’s perfect world rejected him at the end, with five bullets and a heart attack.
I think Matsuda basically DISagreed with Kira. At one point, he does say he that he has thought some people deserve to die, but he immediately follows that up with an equally-strong conviction that it doesn't mean you start executing people. At best, he agreed with the principle that some people are not worth being left alive.
At the same time, remember that Light was seriously thinking of eventually killing lazy people.
Matsuda was a better son to Chief Yagami than Light ever was.
2yrs later - still an excellent take!
There's a really cool scene in the manga that's not in the show. After Mello trades Sayu for the Deathnote he contacts Soichiro asking for the identity of the new L. Matsuda offers up his name knowing full well that Mello might kill him with the Deathnote. That scene further cements my respect for Matsuda and his willingness to sacrifice everything.
Matsuda is Japan the person.
I will always mad this scene was not in the anime
@@Miki_peach wait really? Wow i only read DN manga, never watch the anime (yet)
But seriously, the anime totally didn't get M and N. It focused so much on L, that when he was gone, it sort of just gave up on M and N, despite L's death being near the MIDDLE of the manga, not right before the end. >_>
Yeah, this bugs me too.
He died before the middle pages the first 2 arcs too up 200 less pages then the finale near/mello which is odd since in the anime the first 2 arcs take longer by far then the mello near one
Manga and anime were better after L's death. I regret nothing.
Yeah, I felt like the anime director thought, "Everyone will like L, and so when he's gone we should quickly get through the rest until the resolution because people won't be very interested anyway." And so he missed many things about the characters and interactions that made the 2nd part interesting. Because I liked L so much, one thing that was really important to me about Near was his relationship to L. For a while I wasn't sure if I sided with Near, but I came to like him more because he took being L's successor seriously, he respected and adored L, and he always tried to think of how L would have done things. That to me was even more important because in the manga after L died it felt like the Japanese task force didn't acknowledge L very much. They said Watari was a great man but nothing about L, and they just disregarded L's work on the case, (I mean his suspicions of Light and Misa and the 13 day rule.).
They focused on adapting the good part of the manga, then rushed through the shitty part so it could end before people gave up on the series.
matsuda is the best and you are legally not allowed to diss him

Just wanna clear something off. Kira lost only because of Mikami and Takada and because he didn’t try. Why? Because he saw Near inferior to L and he saw L as his greatest challenge and thought no he knew no one could surpass him except for himself. Also I noticed that in the Manga he died as Kira and in the Anime he dies as Light
Dan Sigh After defeating L, Light was flying high on wax wings. He was bound to fall eventually.
-Zero
Well i remeber in the anime that near said if it was him and mello they can be on the same level or surpass L
Kira lost because he took on the world, and that's stupid.
no hunpo, your comment is really stupid and makes no sense..
Light also became overconfident as Kira. So that's another reason.
I started to realise that as I went through the dub, these characters (Including the task force members) have really pulled their weight in getting me interested, and its why I love this anime
i actually quite like Soichiro, Matsuda, and Aizawa. Their arcs are way more subtle in comparison to Light or L, but for what i thought would be copy-paste suited detectives, their characters are actually pretty well defined and they're very unique.
@James Lucas wut? yes he does lol.
YES, the key is they arnt supposed to be super heros. They are instead overall normal everyday people who put their lives on the line to fight a threat well above their level. They could have been those copy paste detectives but they arnt. its fantastic
death note videos never get old/boring
Not if they're made by ma bois Kato!
Amin Highlights
Basically.
They’re interesting
U r right
One thing gets me about the task force. L dies after revealing a plan that would test Light and Misa's alibis. This plan does not end up getting carried out. I feel that should have aroused some suspicion, and they should have insisted on the test. Then they would have caught Kira, and the plan to kill L would have been what backfired on Lightand led to his own destruction. Instead the task force members are stupid and they never honor L's memory by carrying out his last plan
L was the only one who still doubted Light, unfortunately.
Connor Stickels With their moral codes I don't think any of them would have had the stomach for it. That's why they unanimously shot the notion down when Near proposed that he would use the Death Note to test out the validity of the 13 Day Rule.
I was mad about that tbh. He was very clear in saying in the case of his death, assume Kira is light. I’d like to hope they just forgot and didn’t blatantly ignore the best detective in the world 😕
@@patiencewallace8453 they didnt have any reason to believe that Rem would kill for Light. They viewed it as a shinigami getting annoyed at being trapped here so they decided to kill him, or something like that. No one would have dreamed that light could manipulate Rem
it just occured to me right now rewatching this video for like the tenth time. lights lifespan is implied to still have a decent amount of time when ryuk writes his name. if light had kept his composure and convinced ryuk that getting caught was part of his plan, he could have probably negotiated with the government or waited for his followers to break him out. at this point of the story public opinion is overwhelmingly in lights favor. there is no way the authorities would be able to keep him locked up or execute him without serious public outcry. any number of organizations would do anything for that kind of power, and his religion would not stand for their god being locked up or killed. it would likely be all out war. i think ultimately ryuk wrote lights name because death is the only outcome that ends kiras reign even after losing the game to near, and the author likely considered these things but he knew the story had to end somewhere
In the manga Near said that they have no intention of killing Light but they want to lock him up in a place nobody would ever find him. Which... I can't say I exactly get because it implies he would have no trial therefore it would be just a kidnapping and punishment worse than death?
Anyway, another interesting thought is that they would have no reason to suspect that his watch of all things can be of any importance to confiscate it. He could still kill Near later and blame everything on the "being possessed" theory.
I also think killing Light is kinda a waste for this series. I know the whole series revolve around catching Kira but being caught doesn't necessary need to be the end. Kira is still a huge asset to be killed off that quickly. They could've locked him up for good and end the series there. If the author had let Light live, there would be more possibility for future installments. Imagine a new Kira emerge and Light was brought in to find this person himself. That would be priceless
@Z But if he promised him something as interesting as his cult army tearing down his prison he would probably be on board to give him some time.
Once Kira is revealed to be just some guy, he'll lose most of his followers.
@@iRazenrak uhhh.... No? Poor taste but Jesus Christ was just some guy too. And he's still got followers 2000 years later. Have you ever met a cultist or super religious fanatic before? They will go to unnerving lengths to justify their beliefs. The relatability of just being a human might even gain him more followers. Sure some people will lose faith, but the power to deliver basically instant death on anyone (the public isn't sure about the name and face rules) speaks for itself. On the other end of the spectrum, look at how the world deifies celebrities. They are also just normal people. The odds he loses any significant amount of followers are very slim.
Matsuda was so underrated!!! Lowkey one of my favourite anime characters.

Also kind of hate him tbh. Wanted light to win
Honestly, rewatching the series, the task force is seriously underrated. Outside of L (& Light, though it leans towards hate), people gush over Mello or Matt or any other stylish character, but I've found myself becoming more invested in the plain-looking task force than I've ever been towards the ones I've listed above. Soichiro is a total badass, the guy rammed a TRUCK in a building to stop the 2nd Kira's broadcast and he wasn't even fully recovered at the time, Matsuda may be impulsive but his actions definitely contributed to the Yotsuba investigation (as well as stopping Light at the very end), and I've always empathized with Aizawa during his conflict with L even though die-hard L fans tend to give him shit.
Not only am I glad that all three (well, the rest of TF) were able to contribute to the Kira investigation, but also we're given a view on their sense of justice, which is incredibly fitting for the series' theme of morality.
I agree. Just seeing them working in the HQ and analyzing this and that is so cool. And I liked how Aizawa kinda had his own investigation going on and how he starts to grow more suspicious towards Light is something great
L fans give him shit? I’ve never seen that lol. His position was totally understandable
I'm sorry but I had to laugh when Masuda said "he has to die!!!" That timing and editing was priceless. I'm not sure if that was your intention, but I appreciate the humour even though this is a serious analysis.
I can't say it was my intention to be funny, but I do think the situation is humorous lol.

Good thing it wasn't just me that laughed a lot I originally thought the whole thing was interesting how he was the one that defended light the most and then he was the one at the end to do all of that. It really shows his true character throughout the story he was always wanting to catch Kira but never wanted it to be light one of his friends. And having gone through all that in the end he was one of the ones who most realized it out of the task force how messed up light really was. So he was the one that pointed the gun at him first not just because he was feeling betrayed but because he wanted to know the truth and if light had any remorse and once he realized he didn't with his father that was what broke it all
An ice cream commercial came on for me
He goes through, what we call, a character arc! Unlike some people *cough*thetwomaincharactersofFuryborne*cough*
@@eknowsgamenews1013 Matsuda was the son Soichiro Yagami deserved
The whole “Near controlled Mikami using the death note” theory makes a lot more sense in the manga, as he died in jail 10 days after the whole warehouse thing after he gave in to arrest when seeing that Kira wasn’t the all-knowing god he thought he was, as opposed to him committing suicide in the anime.
interessting. that possibly means the anime noticed that being nonsence and changed it because of that
Suicide by thumb

That's a dumb theory. If Near was going to do that. He could have just had the SPK assassinate Light and Mikami. Also Near wanted to avenge L's death by winning like L would have.
Just thinking about Matsuda makes me wanna cry. The poor guy didn’t deserve the way he was treated and especially not his betrayal from Light.
This video turned out really well. The way these three characters influenced the outcome of the series as well as reflected the "moral status" of Light, L and Near was really interesting. I've always been a big fan of Matsuda and his dynamic with Light/Kira, but I hadn't given much thought to the chief or Aizawa before. The Canadians did a good job with the death note dub
Brian Lowe Yeah, one of my favorite dubs of all time.
Hell yes we did! #Canadauberalles ;)
If you liked this dub, check out the Black Lagoon dub. Its done by the same guys and lights voice actor voices the main character
Fun fact half of the cast voiced in My Little Pony
Then we got Code Geass... Often compared to Death Note, plus the English dub has the same lead voice role.
I love Matsuda and Aizawa. Though they were side characters , they were really important in the story!
*_HE HAS TO DIIIIIIIIIE !!!!_*
This is, beyond any doubt, a line and a scene on par with “I’ll take a potato chip... AND *EAT IT !* “
The pure, blinding power of *vengeful* hate we hear in his voice, this concept heavily hammered into our brains by decades of entertainment media as disgusting, horrible and terrifying... Jeez, and it came from *Matsuda* , of all people 😬👌
There's a quote at the beginning of the Tom Clancy novel "Without Remorse".
"Beware the fury of the patient man"
I always felt that in a way, Light was also a victim of Kira.
Perhaps the biggest victim of Kira. In the same way BoJack Horseman says he's the biggest victim of the actions of BoJack Horseman.
It was confirmed by the writers that he was, had he not picked up the death note, he would have had a different and better life
he already had that part of him,but he would not have gone nuts trying to rule the world without the deathnote. basicly, power corrupts but most corruption can only happen because the corrupted state is already possible(there are of course exceptions that fuck people up no matter what).
Power not always corrupts but it always reveals. Light was not a victim, but had full control from the beggining
Light cultivated that self image. It was given to him by the people. At the end of the day Kira was an abstract, but it was Light that organised all of it (apart from Misa's part)
Death note is such a masterpiece , to the soundtrack and just everything ugh
I can't believe people say that it's trash.
@@123dan165 That's only because, those same kind of people think that when a show is super popular, it is "overrated"

Next Death Note video: The Importance of Ryuk.
I could even help.
I'd be interested in hearing your ideas.
-Zero
Ryuk is a Character that gets treated like nothing, but a Comic relief, a side Character if you so will, but he is the most important Person, along with light in the series. He is the one, who started the Whole Conflict with the Death Note, it was through his Curiosity and boredom that Ligth became the murderer we all both endear, yet despise. His passive role in the series gives the viewer the impression that he is a side Character that serves there as an explaination as to how Light got the power of the Death Note and how light, but I think there is more to that. Ryuk's overall lack of concern for the war Light fights against Injustice and the tragedy it brought with it, paired with his hedonistic attitue serves to tell to us that Ryuk is like he said, indeed for the fun here and that *Kira there to just entertain him* , like a God toying with a Mortal, this is the single reason, why Light was allowed to life for this long, until he was no longer interesting. You see, Ryuk is the actual boss in the whole relationship with Light here. Everything Light does, everything that happens is merely there to please Ryuk's wishes for his own ends, being entertained. This Relationship is partly religious( made obvious with the whole Apple thing and the first intro), he is the hidden divine power behind the power of his Prophet, Kira, who uses it to carry the message for the new world( being one of killing People), he is the one, who teaches Light how the use the power of the DN and what the Shimigami are. One might argue that Ryuk wasn't really all that smart enough to use light like that or that he simply cares only for fun and has no other interrest, but to be entertained, which i agree with somewhat, however he doesn't need to, he just gave Light a opportunity to kill all those criminals he hated under the promise to entertain him, thus binding him not with a deceptive plan, but a simple diffrence of power between the two to bind him to his will( maybe he is more intellegent than what the series tries to tell us) and since Kira is too arrogant to see or even respect Ryuk, he ended up dead due to him not understand his role in this game: A funfest.
Realizing this makes DN actually more tragic than it is, realizing that Light had been baited by a Death God to simply entertain him, a Person with a sense of Justice, controlled a vile creature to do his bidding unknowingly for the joy his cruel acts bring to the world, to live only to kill, never seeing your Utopia realized for it might disatisfy Ryuk and you end up dead. Seeing this shows us pretty much that Light had never a chance to get to win this game with Near or even achieving his Goal, like in the word of Ohba, Light's life was ruined once he touched the DN, which proves further how Hopeless Light was in the series. Man, seeing his fate already sealed in just the first Episode is kind of shocking, if not worldbreakingly sad, don't you think. That's why i find Ryuk interesting, he is pretty much the God of Light that leaves him, once he doesn't fulfil the wishes of him all because he was bored, like any sadistic diety in all mythologies, that's why Ryuk was the actual secound main Charcter.
If Ohba went with the originial design of Ryuk, him looking like as if he were from the band Kiss, while looking like light, he would have been confused as the true Protagonist of the series.
I agree with most of what you've said and I think Ryuk in general was pretty underused. I probably wouldn't be able to make an entire video on the subject, but it's an interesting way to look at the show. Light even misunderstood Ryuk, his first and final partner.
-Zero
Kato a short video would be enough.
Yuwan
Very much agreed. Ryuk has a profound effect on the show as a character just in general and was clearly manipulated light. Very good writing from the creator of the series. Not to mention as we know that the death gods can see the lifespan of everyone and name so this being put into consideration, ryuk already knew from the beginning that light would never achieve his goal but still chooses to let his chase after it for his own entertainment. This fact alone shows how manipulative he is. While people may argue that ryuk wasn’t as smart as light or as slick to the human world and their behavior, he really didn’t need to be because he was a shinigami with the ability and all the resources that he needed at his disposal. It’s shown many times throughout the series that even when ryuk knows certain information, he won’t tell light just to see if he will figure it out and to see how clever he is. Though he is used as comedic relief, ryuk is uninterested in the desires of humans or the human world... because they are not on his level and he knows this
Near is looked down upon in the show and in the real world. Do you know why Near was the perfect figure to stop Kira? It's because he is emotionally unattached to the suspect unlike L who want to befriend him. And Near isnt afraid to ask for help to get the job done even if it dampens his reputation to act as a independent but being on a task force isn't about ego its about effort.
Thank youuuuuuu.
sorry but , lol L does not care to be light's friend
When I watched the anime the second time I though that L pretended to be friends with Light
Pretty sure L was pretending, but at this point who knows
L just tried to play with light's emotions (of course than plan failed). he doesn't care for light and light doesn't care for L. they do respect each other tho
I wouldn't say they got Kira without L. Near and Mellow were basically a substitute for L. Ending it off like that makes it sound that like they could have done it without L.
L literally was not there to help them, so it's technically a true statement.
-Zero
Whammy's House beat Light, no one person did.
I have a question I heard the author said if light didn’t pick up the deathnote he would’ve been a great police officer but I wonder if when he’s a police officer would ryuk still drop the deathnote and someone else happened to pick it up and started to kill and light caught the dn user would he be tempted to use it or would he not? So is light destined to be Kira or was it just he happened to pick it up and find a liking to it?
Ryuk said that fate played no part in his choice and that he dropped the notebook simply because he was bored. He also said that literally anyone could have picked it up and it just so happened to be Light. If it somehow got back to Light he could very well take it for himself and use it but we’ll never know for sure
I think its safe to say that light sits on that line of boredom without the death note anyways
Matsuda is arguably the show's true protagonist in some ways. Matsuda certainly follows the most "traditional" character arc out of all the characters, in that he is initially blinded by a lie he believes (Light is not Kira), and then he eventually grows into the person that actually subdues Light.
No thats not how that works light is the protagonist undoubtedly because hes the main character
Matsuda is NOT the main character
He doesn't grow that much. He literally refuses to believe Light could be Kira until the warehouse scene, and then he COLLAPSES in disbelief. There was no progression.

Dangerous to do on Netflix
The bit with Aizawa and the task force wanting to immediately arrest the Yotsuba group was spot on to my feelings. I was so frustrated over how they were opposing his plans but i do understand their positions and it while they do make up for their mistakes by the end, there's just something in the back of my mind that dislikes them. A very well made script Kato, way to point out their flaws while also defending them, they're importance in the second half gets brush aside by most.
The writing and Analysis were great, but that's to be expected with a Kato video.
But what I really liked was the bits of Personality that were thrown here and there, I find them really enjoyable as they add a human element to the video, that element I find lacking in some other analysis videos making them sound just like an essay. (Not that those can't be good, but I just personally enjoy and resonate a lot more with something if it has a touch of personality.)
So, yeah, TL;DR I really liked the bits and pieces of personality you put in this video, it made it more enjoyable for me.
Oh, and Poor Matsuda, I really liked the guy... But L calling him out when he did dumb stuff was always hilarious. lol
I've been trying to come off as less robotic lately. Not very successfully, but I gotta try.

Baby steps.
is a good anime, I hear.
Outside of Light's father (and L, of course), I guess the only two members of the task force we truly get to know are Matsuda and Aizawa. Matsuda sort of represents the pathos and naivete of the viewer. He has elements of innocence, purity, and impudence even. The character is more annoying than anything to me, but he's crucial to the plot, and he was also the perfect choice to shoot Light in the finale, given his feelings of betrayal. It's a moment where the show ends and Matsuda finally grows up.
Aizawa was somewhat unlikable first, with his disgruntled nature and intolerance of characters like both L and Matsuda. But he is one who really grows on the viewer, particularly after L's death. As we migrate all the over to seeing Light as a villain instead of just an anti-hero, Aizawa becomes the channel we root for with his growing suspicions and willingness to take to surreptitiously investigating his theory. He's actually easier to root for than Near during this period.
The investigation team starts out as a homogeneous group of men in suits, each a blank slate that we weren't sure we'd ever see filled in. It's amazing how well this show/manga actually ends up using them. Another overlooked point of brilliance with the story. Well done video. I really enjoyed it.
i can never tell what light is feeling while crying by his father, how much is he really crying as light? how much of it is an act? how much is he focusing on mellos death, what are the priorities in the moment? always confuses me.
A comment on Matsu's theories (just finished his part of the video):
Personally, I don't think Near knew that he had a fake notebook and prompted Mello to act that one specific time; after all, a vital part of Near's character arc is how much he learned from Mello's sudden kidnapping of Takada, which specifically catalyzed Near knowing Light and Mikami aren't the idiots he thought they were.
Also, I never really get how people say Near using the Death Note is "cheating". Near wins if Kira and the notebooks are gone, and the way Near went about it is finding proof against Kira. The thing is, Near didn't say that he's simply not gonna kill X-Kira nor Kira, what he said was that he's not gonna kill X-Kira and Kira _before_ finding proof. If he killed Mikami with the Death Note, he solidified the proof _before_ Mikami died, like he said he would.
Also, he did indeed want proof. I think that Near either had Mikami write down the names of everyone except _Kira_ (rather than everyone but _Light Yagami)_ or he simply wanted to force a confession out of Light, the latter of which seems more likely and fair, it's still seeking proof.
Although, yes, enjoyable video so far.
Well, Matsuda wasn't even implying that Near knew about the fake notebook. He thought Near compelling Mello to act was him just reaching.
I would still argue that Near wouldn't have used the Death Note simply because of what it was. Unlike Mello, Near has never killed anyone by the time he came into contact with the Death Note. I think he'd be more reluctant to use it. And again, Ide even suggested Near wouldn't want to use such an evil weapon as the Death Note. I also think Near would consider using the Death Note to be cheating, hence my usage of the term. He views everything as a game, and the Death Note is the ultimate overpowered magic item. I think he wanted to beat Light with his plan alone. That said, that's just my impression.
Nice to hear from you again btw, you should be more active in our Discord.

Personally, I see Near as reluctant to go through with using the Death Note, but he'd still find it to be a necessity. After all, Near _is_ utilitarian, albeit to a minimalistic extent. He would take these measures if necessary, in order to ensure that Mikami wouldn't take very simple steps which would throw away the lives of plenty of other people who've worked hard for years to bring justice to a murderer. That's how I interpret Near.
Also, it was never established before that Near ever saw using the Death Note as cheating in a game. Like, he very much saw Mello use it, he never said nor thought "Mello, you cheater!" Besides, if he did see using the Death Note as cheating, he would never see this as a game in the first place since Kira's been using this from the start.
And now that summer's started, I'll be sure to be more active there, haha.
PhulaTrox The reason these theories were introduced at all was to add a bit of ambiguity to the ending, so I don't mind us having different conclusions here. Your opinion is respectable.

Matsuda spotted
If near did write mikamis name in the death note then why didnt he tell anyone??? If he the good guy???
Talking theories, speculations & what ifs about Death Note NEVER get old!
Such a great series! Great video, man! Amazing job on the editing! : )
Why are there so many Death Note videos recently?
FrodoFraggins It's just a good show.

People remembered how good it was after the terrible Netflix version.
FrodoFraggins why...noooot
Miss Ani Lmao correct
because it’s the best dude
Smartness: L
Acting:Light
Righteousness:Near
The chapter where light tries to kill near using the piece of the notebook in his watch is titled "impossible" which would have surely made me believe that both light and near would die at the end if I hadn't watched the anime before reading the manga, in the anime light gave it away easily that he was gonna try to write near's name
But did Light know the actual name of Near? I don't think so.
@@wafflesbutgay7969 But it was too far away lol
Finally my boy Matsuda is getting some well deserved recognition
Great video man! You clearly have a full understanding of this great show.
death note is the best anime ever change my mind
It's definitely great, but there are better. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is more expansive and satisfying, Psycho-Pass has a more compelling philosophy and an on par villain, Bebop is more influential, Gurren Lagann is more exciting, FLCL has more layers, etc. But Death Note is definitely one of the least flawed.
Violet Rose fmab is good but probably the most overrated anime in the west. regular japanese consider it ok at best. death note for me just gave me such a different feeling from any anime
@@VitruvianVictor Oh, don't get me wrong, it definitely gives off a unique, fantastic vibe as the perfect blend of self-aware edgy humor and genuinely great storytelling and direction. That being said, I consider many others better in various ways. And yeah, Brotherhood has its problems, but its positive themes, fantastic animation, interesting world and magic system, huge and well handled cast, and the fact that it was my first anime gives it a really special place in my heart. Its sense of humor and dialogue are kind of shit though (not that anime dialogue is ever really that great).
Victor Gonzalez nah bro, you right
no doubt. Everything about this anime is just mind blowing. The reason why it never gets old. So much to analyze . fav or not , one cant deny its greatness
They are the side Characters, they always matter to a plot and help the main Heroes in thier goal and or even use them for thier own goals, sometimes it's a combination of both.
What is most interesting about them is thier relationship with Ligth, the reason why they were annoited for fighting against them and is in many ways the binding force of this groupe in a Grotesque, yet interesting way is the relationship he has with the task force. All of them are completely ( except L ) Clueless, who Kira could be, they don't know, who he is or that he is currently with them, sabotaging thier path to discover, Kira's identity. They , even when confronted with the idea that Kira was Light, completely unable to believe it, with Soichiro and Matsuda being strongly against this thought and would often not take L's methods of investigation as the right way of doing things, which includes, Shuichi Aizawa, who was disgusted with him, to the point, where he temporarly left the task force out of disgust towards L. When L dies and Light takes over, the entire Kira task force has now been taken under the control of Kira, keeping them into a long period of ignorance, until the arrival of Near. During the Time the task force worked together, Light had recieved little to no opposition from the task force compared to L, who was socially speaking far more unlikable than Kira, showing us how Manipulative Light is, but that would not last as Near's influence, paired with Light's growing suspicious behaviour( him holding audio accords with Takada) made Aizawa distrustful towards Light and begins to help N, despite the Emotional impact Soichiro and final words had.
In the end, Light lost sight to how important the Task force had in this game, he believed to be above them, something not considered to be a threat, when they, as dedicated enemies of Kira, were more than able to find out his true identity, which bitt him into the dust( NO JOJO REFFERENCE)
Thank you bro, how about this as the topic: How Zutara can't function as a pair.
I'll get Hoodie right on it.

I like how you described Kira as a "Caged God"
8:05 "it all goes according to keikaku" LOL I love that joke you sneaked in
“It all goes according to keikaku of coarse”
Nice.
Thing is it really didn't because Light planned on having the police _investigate_ L rather than quit and in the manga you even see him worrying about how the Task Force numbers diminished.
I legit cried when Soichiro died, it was just as bad when Severus died!
L had victory within his grasp but the task force held him back ( except for Mogi). They never failed to queston his reasoning or logic. This is evident when L decides to investigate as well as test the thirteen day rule without the help of the task force. If Rem( a supernatural being a shinigami) did not intervene he would of had the evidence to convict both Misa and Light. Near and Mello were raised in Wammy's house so they had some level of respect for their mentor L. Becoming the next L was the expected goal for every orphan at Wammy's. Mello wanted to be the best and take down Kira before Near but also wanted to avenge L. Once Mello put aside his pride and rivalry with Near and worked with Near were they able to surpass L as well as stand with L and avenge L's death. Point is every character played a part in Kira's downfall.
Note: Near possibly did not respect the task force( taking into account his character) because he probably figured they held L back causing him trouble while he was still alive. I would also bring to light that Near refused to just simply kill Kira because that would have been a disgrace to L. As Near stated, "That's just not the way we do things...L and I." You could tell he respected L as well as Mello. While Mello viewed Near as an obstacle to defeat. Near viewed Mello as a necessary ally to help him take down Kira.
I love that, “All it took was L saying hi.” XD
I love how you still read, like and reply to comments on a video from 2018.
Great video.
Lol, I just love reading comments. Thank you.
The whole time i was praying to myself that Matsuda stays alive
I woke up to a new Death Note video from you. Yeah, this is going to be a good day.
Nah, Once you experience something THIS good your day can only go downhill.
Jk, the video was great and I hope your day will be greater!
I’d kill for Matsuda. He slowly became my favourite character after all these years.
The most interesting part with Kira Task Force is how heavily Light underestimated them after L’s death. He literally killed anyone else from first ark who knew anything about DN or L, but he kept those guys naively thinking that they’re blindly loyal and harmless. That was Light’s biggest mistake in the entire series, the moment when he allowed Kira’s persona to fully dominate more careful Light. Damn, in the very beginning he proclaimed readiness to kill his family and burn house down to protect DN. Where did it go?
And the funniest thing is Light got so reckless in the very end that he literally taunted Near and co to kill him, as if he was invincible. Again not counting KTF as anything significant, if he played it properly we would see absolutely another ending.
But who knows actually, we’re never told how much time Light had left in total. Yes, he didn’t use Shinigami’s eyes, but we don’t know how much was there from the beginning.
I will take this potato chip and EAT IT!!!!!!
So people still makes videos about death note, that's awesome
This video was uploaded on my birthday, great video by the way.
Did anyone else wonder why the task force was so shocked that L would willingly use the note to kill a death row inmate in a test? Like did they just forget that he literally used an inmate as a test to see how kira killed in the first episode that he appears in?
Well the guy that they killed had his execution just later that day so they technically just executed a guy in a different way.
I always thought they were pretty important in the series( more than people give them credit for).
Great video. Any other importance of vid planned?
Not yet. I have a few ideas, but I don't know which I'll do next. Any suggestions?

Kato cool, maybe one on Mello or a Code Geass character.
Mello would be the next Death Note character to get one, but I don't know how long it'll be before I revisit this show specifically. Maybe Kallen, for Code Geass. We'll have to see.
The Kira task force is important because its impossible for Light to have defeated L without them. Light tried to convince everyone that its possible that Kira possessed him and Misa, or that Kira was framing them, but he never convinced L. Even when he was in his "innocent" state, L understood that Light was a complete monster, who constantly lies and is completely ego driven, but the Kira task force never perceived Light's true character. The 13 day rule wasn't made to slow L down, it was just to get some confirmation bias from the task force, taking everybody off of L's side.
Helping Near was the very least they could do after their painful inconpetence causing Kira's victory over L.
Loved this video. Great analysis 👍🏾
It would have been pretty smart to try to frame L as Kira...once L was dead, Kira could go into hibernation for some time (and maybe even plant some evidence). This would disband the task force and while it might not have stopped Mallo and Near from entering the picture, people would have the idea that this outlandish L was Kira and some would find that easier to accept than others.
You need more subs, your content is pretty sweet
earned my sub. can't get enough of death note analysis
One of your best videos.
Great video! The task force are great, so it’s great to hear them talked about, especially since that happens so little in the fandom. A little more focus on Mogi, Ide, and Ukita would have been nice (especially Ide - I have a lot of appreciation for the guy), but I’m just kind of nitpicking, haha. Thanks for this!
I loved this! Great work! However, I think that Light's real face or true self is the pure Light that loses his memories of the Death Note and carries his father's moral compass throughout the investigation alongside L.
Kira is the corruption of Light through the temptation of using the Death Note. I wouldn't call Kira the real face of Light. I think the final episode of the series emphasizes this by showing Light running away after he was exposed while remembering his high school self reading a book and walking home. He is remembering the Light with a bright future ahead of him that didn't become twisted by the power to omnipotently kill others.
In the end, the absolute power of the Death Note corrupts absolutely.
Well, in the manga he dies as Kira, begging everyone he stumbles upon to kill the Task Force and the SPK while saying they're idiots who can't comprehend his idea of a better world...
@@treceslez Good point. I never fully read the manga, but if he never gets away from the warehouse after being exposed, then it makes sense that he would desperately try to kill everyone by begging Ryuk or persuading Matsuda. Light was always a perfectionist and sore loser, so admitting defeat was never easy for him. That trait was naturally inherited in Kira's mentality and ruthlessness.
If we're being completely practical, there is no Kira. There is just Light and then there is Light who can kill people without repercussions or risks. If anyone had the ability of the Death Note to do what Light did, it would change anybody from what they used to be. Does that mean Light's real self changed or does it mean that Light was always destined to be a serial killer and the DN just made it easier? Personally, I don't think Light would've been destined to be a serial killer if he had never found the Death Note.
Love Death Note and love your video. Honestly, Matsuda and Aizawa are my favorite characters, (along with L), and I feel that they, especially Aizawa, are underrated and not talked about as much as they should be. Thanks for this vid!
I feel like Near is underrated like I want to hate him but I honestly can’t,but L figured out 3 death note users in 3. Months and it took Near 60 months to find three people plus with the help of the SPK and Mello. Also lights dad was also a big part of lights plan but sense he wasn’t there there was no one to defend him,and plus L he carved the road for mello, near, the task force and everyone else to figure out who Kira was,and yes Watari deleted the. Data but N already knew about the death note well L didn’t but L still managed to figure out.And Kira thought of N as a small little wall and got way to cocky like saying “it’s over near”
Thanks Hoodie always coming in clutch. Sad I couldn't understand most of this fanfic since DN ended at episode 25~
Lol
One day, Idealist. One day I'll make you like the ending.

Kato But I do! Light winning was the best possible outcome!
Have you read Bakuman.? Because Oba and Obata kind of show how an alternative ending for Death Note could have played out if the series had ended after roughly 50 chapters.
HappyLemonLord Reversi is not Ashirogi Muto's Death Note.
Am i the only one who thinks mikami killed himself so that light would have a chance to escape ... as a way to "atone" for its mistakes
i actually think he killed himself , because first his strong and obsessive belief on god Kira was now shattered infront of his eyes...and when he realized he was now to be punished by the law.
Great Video. You helped me to really understand the characters more. I enjoyed the characters for a good while but you made me understand more of just how much of an obstacle they were to L as well in a way. I'm a serious L fan though thankfully not in any delusional, extreme ways. I'm aware he isn't perfect or innocent but I still enjoyed his character. I only now realize that he didn't really have the support he needed from the task force. They meant well and I don't blame them for having issues with L's way of doing things but it adds more tragedy to the case for me personally. L tried so hard to catch Kira, for whatever his reasons, and those that were supposed to be his allies ultimately doomed him by getting in his way, whether they were right to or not I won't say. I don't dislike them, though sometimes I get pissed about it, and I understand where they are coming from. It was just something you helped me to realize about the show. At least Aizawa learned from his "mistake" and did what had to be done in the end when it came to Near.
Sorry for the long winded comment, I get very emotional when it comes to this series, L in particular.
Beautifully made video
Why can’t every anime have a story as enticing as death note and full metal
more of these please
au where after the kira incident theres another death note in the world and near recruits matsuda since he technically did save his life and sees some potential in the young eager detective?
>it all goes according to keikaku
Like.
The importance of Ide:
🙂
One think i like about death note is that their are so many different things that could of happened or might of happened that are interesting. What if L, Kira, mellow one instead. What if near did cheat with the death note. What happened to light after he died. Their are so many possibilities that all feel like they would have made a great story in their own right. It makes it so interesting to think about even after its done.
Light became a shinigami.
Bro you picked the perfect song man thank you it's just so fucking good
I always thought that Mikami killed himself as a last stitch effort to help Light escape
Lights dad's death had me more shocked than sad because, what? Light's actually crying? Then to pissed off when he showed that he didn't care and I thought "And I thought your tears were genuine, Light"
Honestly, I think Light did care when his father died. If you look at the scene where he fakes concern when L dies versus the scene where he just cries when his dad dies...there's a clear difference between the two reactions. Yes, he was trying to manipulate his dad to write Mellow's name, but when his dad died, it's like Light's awareness kicked back in.
Just how it's drawn, it's like time stopped for Light. He dropped the pen (in a sense forgetting Kira and his agenda if only for a moment), and he just cried. I feel like that solidified Light's becoming Kira completely. Why would Light want to be himself to feel all that pain? It makes sense that his dad was a link to Light's humanity and identity, even if the link was hanging by a thread. When his dad died, the link was severed completely, and after Light mourned his father's death at his bedside, Kira fully took over.
@@sassylittleprophet maybe…
If only Light put a GO pro on his dad's helmet and quietly murder Mello after he ran away... Or atleast try to convince him that he had to kill him on sight.
In my honest opinion,Matsuda is the true hero of the entire anime. Guys, don't try to tell me otherwise. The last episode proves my opinion just well. Sure,L often says Matsuda is an idiot, that does'nt mean he is an actual idiot. In fact,Matsuda knows what he's doing. Useful or not,he knows what he can do. Heck! He even did'nt die from the Death Note because he used a fake name, which is literally smart. I'm a huge fan of Matsuda and no matter how funny he can be,he IS a hero. He's the one who shot Light after all. I approve of the video. Matsuda deserves a medal. He never gave up on the case. He's brave.
Very good video!
I like what Ide (or was it Aizawa?) said “It’s not like I think that Near is justice or anything. I think Near did the right thing because if he didn’t we’d be dead”
I think that was Aizawa. Good line, either way. Pretty much sums up the Task Force's relationship with the SPK.
-Zero
Perhaps Light wrote Mikami's name in the Death Note.
While I wouldn't put it past him, he probably wouldn't have done so until after Mikami helped him beat everyone. But he might think it's worthwhile to kill everyone who knows Kira's true identity. Or he might have him erase his memory.
Solid vid bro 👍
Funny story my friend gave me his memory flash with only 36 eps I was so satisfied until few months later I watched the 37th
