- Sometimes it's easy to dismiss people as a bit strange or even quirky. In some cases they can have a mental condition with unique Neurology.
In this video we explore and educate ourselves on Asperger's Syndrome as we analyze and look into the Character of L to study the extent to which he has Asperger's syndrome.
I really enjoyed reading up on what Aspergers is in order to make this video and I learned a lot, and I hope you did too.

The authors actually stated that if Light never found the Death Note, he would've become one of the most brilliant detectives in the world, even rivaling L, and they would have worked together to find whoever would have become Kira in Light's place. It's a sad universe to think about, knowing what we do about the one we were given.
they were soulmates, not as lovers but as rivals. they are bound by fate to challenge each other.
As an autistic person (my case is formally considered aspergers), I immediately was able to see L and even Near as autistic characters. Glad to see people recognizing it!
Same here. I remember very clearly seeing this series for the first time when I was around 14, and L and Near were the first characters I ever saw myself in like that, and they both fall into a very special place for me because of that!

He definitely was. His internal dialogue proves that he never trusted him for a second.

L never saw Light as a friend, he actually hated light and was just being manipulative because he suspected Lignt was Kira, the creator of the manga stated this

They can say that, but that's not what we're given (at least in the show, didn't read the manga so idk how different it is)
when i spent time thinking about death note i realized that he was likely an autistic character, even if it wasn't confirmed, and it made me attached to him as a character. a lot of autistic representation is pretty disrespectful or offensive and treats as if we're a burden to those around us, so even though L being autistic isn't confirmed, i love the character so much because it feels like an authentic portrait of what an autistic person is actually like instead of showing us through the lens of being burdensome. thank you for making this, it was very fascinating and i agree with what you said. i heard there is a version of death note told from L's perspective, so i'm planning to read it and see if anything else comes up regarding him being autistic

I thought I was the only one who thought he was autistic because my sister is and they share many symptoms such as sudden mannerisms and fixation/stimming via stacking objects or even sitting posture.
I became very self conscious of the way I was sitting while watching this video.

Awesome video, but on the whole "only friend" thing, L only told Light that because Light was trying to manipulate him into a friendly relationship. L was mocking Light.
I always assumed L's sitting position effects his ability to think due to sensory issues; if he was not sitting in his preferred position, some sensory input would distract him enough to decrease his abilities. The same with the weird way he handled a mobile phone or held most things by his finger tips. Seems like he had some pretty severe sensory issues, typical to the people on the autism spectrum.
In regard to L not asking Aizawa to stay do you think it’s possible that L rather than just being emotionally unaware, instead has an IQ and the subsequent problem solving ability to understand Aizawa’s emotions and him as a person to the point that when Aizawa threatened to leave. L realized that words, no matter how comforting, wouldn’t stop him from leaving and so rather than try convincing him he instead wishes him well and just allows him to leave?
Yes definitely! He could have calculated the outcome in is head as it might have been what he wanted to happen. I do think L did handle it well from a results point of view, though he did hurt his feelings.

L also never wanted a friendship with Light, he honestly never cared for Light. L didn't even want to catch Light for the justice, in fact he's not a detective for the Justice, he wants to win, he wants to win, but he also cares for Human Life, and that's also why he wants to catch Kira.
And, Light has plenty of friends. He's quite popular.
L, and Light are very Selfish as well
L never has normal conversations, whenever he's having a conversation with somebody is always about him doing a test or investigation on them, in fact he only has normal conversations with people he respects like Watari, and Chief Yagami.
L is also very, very, very, VERY emotionally smart, in fact that's actually his style of playing the game. L waits for reactions, and then strikes.
I honestly don't think that L was ever a British Champion given how that could possibly give away his identity, but I believe that L was just so smart that he was able to play at Light's Level
L chose not to have friends throughout his life
L actually figured out that Light was Kira in only a day.
L is not a real life character, he lives in a world where killer not books fall from the sky. I think it's very outlandish to compare him to any real life people. That's just me.

Having said this, I think L and light had mutual respect for one another’s intellect and saw each other as equals, so as close to “friends” as you can imagine

While you may be right that Near has more symptoms, I think Ls symptoms are more extreme.
Near seems to have a harder time deviating from structure and never shows L's acting skills. However, that may be because L is older and thus has had more time to adjust and learn.
What’s more interesting to me than L possibly having aspergers is the fierce fan backlash against the notion that he might.
Some people get really upset if you bring up this interpretation, and it makes me wonder how those people feel about Aspergers in general. It’s mighty suspicious 🤔

Aspergers in general is very controversial term, because autism is already a spectrum, so just taking a part of the spectrum and labeling it as something different and "better" doesn't make a ton of sense. And the origin of this particular part of the spectrum had troubling roots. Dr. Asperger was a nazi, and essentially labeled people with aspergers as the "good" part of the autistic population, and people without it as disabled. And in nazi germany, it was not uncommon for those who are disabled to be killed. Dr. Asperger himself approved the transfer of dozens of kids to spiegelgrund, which was a killing center.
I actually believe L did see Light as a friend. It just makes the interpretation of the show more complex and emotionally intelligent/rich. I loved that “tragic element” of death note and the cognitive dissonance I picked up on. Obha’s assertion that him telling Light he was his first friend was a lie, it didn’t make sense at all with how it felt watching the show. I think the dub is incredible because it emphasizes this “L as a sympathetic character” reading. Which I prefer.
Great video! By the way I'm pretty sure that bit about L having to sit like that is probably just severe OCD, which let me tell you is absolute hell to sit through. I use to count and talk in evens numbers and syllables. And not doing so was like someone set my head on fire. An trying to get through it by sheer willpower is comparable to going through rehab. I had cold sweats, intense migraines. irritation. and I still suffer, just not nearly as bad. I also used to sit like L. It's wasn't an autism thing I was just really short and kept sitting that way into adulthood, his OCD probably happened to latched onto it though.

10:05 - this is a stretch of the translation, in the original manga L implies light is his "equal" not his "friend"
10:00 L is character that constantly lies. He lied when he said he saw Light as a friend, he was actively trying to manipulate Light when he said that.
He did not care about friendship. His only desire in the series was to prove that Light was Kira.
Another thing is that L is very perceptive in social interactions, he's constantly picking-up on social queues. He showed in many scenes that he can notice when people are acting differently.
I would say he's very socially intelligent, yet he doesn't care to act in ways that are seen as socially acceptable.
L has no friends, never had any and to be honest I struggle to think how Manga and Anime L could ever make any friends.
Yeah I'm on the spectrum too. Luckily mine is somewhat mild. So you probably wouldn't notice at first... until you saw that I'm fairly isolated and being around people too long is pretty exhausting...

Honestly, as an autistic person myself I definitely relate to L a lot, and Near too. I have a ton of similar mannerisms myself, like the weird sitting posture, the tendency to play with objects as a thinking mechanism, wearing comfy clothes over presentable ones. Personally though, I don't necessarily think either ARE autistic. The fact that both L and Near are like that indicates to me it's more nurture than nature, and that being raised in an orphanage for detectives is what made them exhibit strange quirks that only superficially resemble autism.
I liked L, but his eating noises were difficult for me.

really fun video, but a few things were a little off (i know im here late but i didn't see anyone mentioning this)
-asperger's and "high/low functioning" are outdated terms with some pretty bad connotations (some people diagnosed as aspies might keep that terminology, but as far as im aware its no longer given as a diagnosis).
-the commonly portrayed savant narrative is harmful because it implies that you have value as an autistic person only if you contribute to society / are financially successful. savants in fiction are fine but a push for the portrayal of a variety of autistics or even just disabilities is very important.

I also wonder if L might have some past trauma as well. Because some of his behaviors seem to match certain trauma responses that I've had before.
yeah he has past trauma he had a very stressful childhood growing up in a place where people are competing to be the smartest and some were so stressed out that they you know cut there life short

I think it maybe likely that Asperger’s syndrome is more like a specific collection of personality traits that leads a person to being extremely introverted. In L’s case he’s extremely high in openness (IQ), contentiousness, and introversion and extremely low in agreeableness and neuroticism. Which is why he doesn’t fit in with anyone and so has no friends. This would also explain why he is so much more fascinated in puzzles and things rather than people. Additionally I think the author makes it so that L eats sugar all the time because sugar is the preferred energy source for the brain as to accentuate the idea that L burns so much energy from thinking that he constantly needs more sugar to optimally supply his brain with energy.
I know I’m kinda disagreeing a lot with you but I really did enjoy the video and am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on some of my ideas 😅🤔

I disagree. A lot of people with ASD are in fact not introverts and have a strong desire for intimate social relationships, they just don't understand the 'normal' way of socialising. So it may seem that people with ASD are introverts when they are really extroverts unable to express it in the traditional way. You often see autistic people thriving in a social environment with other autistics sharing their interests.
