The Psychopathology Of Light Yagami (Death Note Analysis)

  • These days, calling someone a Psycho is a pretty throwaway line. It could mean many things, but often not what it actually means.
Psychopathy is a mental condition, affecting 1% of the population, and is often diagonosed with the Bob Hare Checklist.
After reading the Pyschopath Test, it led me to make this video.
In this video I investigate and analyse the character of Light Yagami from Death Note, to see if he is actually a psychopath.
I'm glad it's finally done! Hope you guys enjoy.

Something I noticed from the anime: when Light's in full-on 'no empathy' mode, his eyes are redder and drawn with sharp lines. When he's in 'innocent student' mode, his eyes are brown and round. I rewatched the first couple of episodes recently and that line about "I'm a hardworking honor student" was probably the most chilling moment in the show, because (after lots of dramatic creepy shots) his eyes are suddenly wide and brown and his delivery is soft. In my opinion he genuinely believes that that's enough to give him a godlike authority over the world, which is terrifying. Therefore, I think Light does have a moral compass - but it's a deeply warped one.
I think he's meant to be a dark take on the classic anime 'Mr. Perfect' character archetype. *Everyone* fawns over him, and that attention is based on his academic achievements, athletic ability and good looks - things that make him desirable as a trophy, basically. He's quite possibly never experienced failure before the start of the show. In the show itself, we see evidence that he's an extreme perfectionist with a huge amount of pride - and of course he is, because he's never had an experience that didn't make other people proud of him (wow, double negatives). So he projects the alienation from other people that he feels inside (that speech about nobody *really* believing you shouldn't kill criminals) onto everyone else. Because he's perfect, right? Because everyone tells him he is. So if HE feels it, everyone must. That plus a self-worth entirely based on being perfect to other people, and a track record of living up perfectly to those expectations = why should he in any way doubt that he is literally the single best person in the world?
I think he'd probably be diagnosed with some sort of Cluster B disorder, to be honest, but being a fictional character it's hard to say (obviously nobody could be a Light IRL - because magic death notebooks don't exist).

Kinda like Akashi from kuroko basketball, he was like god among man, perfect and never loss in anything and had overall full authority over everyone, you do what he tells you and he do not like defiance because he is “never wrong because he has never loss”. Which he would tell you to lower your head, because he is your king. But he works harder than most people to perfect everything he does, and he doesn’t disrespect who doesn’t give up and tries their best but doesn’t like who falls but never gets up. He is more respectable than Light but similar, even though light is more scarier and relatable to most people.

Probably a foreshadowing. In a couple of ways actually.
      1) Light "sacrificed" his dad in order to take a win. The death of Mello woulda been his victory. Near sacrificed Mello BUT managed to obtain a victory from that.
      2) It tells us that Light shouldn't depend on other people because they aren't reliable. Basically what happened with Teru Mikami.

@@alejandroserrano7755 True. But Light didnt really sacrificed his father though. If anything he's trying to keep him from dying. He didnt ask his dad to take the eye deal. He wanted Matsuda to do so. It was his father who insisted to take the deal because of his guilt and Light knew that there's nothing he can do to change his fathers mind. It's pretty obvious that he cares for his father a lot. He still does. If he was ready to sacrifice his father for his goals, he would've killed the entire task force as soon as L is dead, it was the perfect time to do so, and he would've won if he did but, he didnt because of his father. Even when Sayu is kidnapped all he asked for was for them to return safely. Not once during the kidnapping did he prioritise the Death Note over his families' life.

If we’re treating “Light” and “Kira” as two separate entities, I definitely feel that “Kira” took over in episode number one. Of course, he lost his memories during a few episodes in the middle, but with the memories back, he is right back to being “Kira”.
I find it very difficult to believe he felt any sadness towards his father’s death. The main reason for that is when his father was in the process of dying, *all* that was in Light’s mind at that moment was how he could make it seem like he felt upset to everyone present in the room, solely for the reason of trying to achieve what HE wanted-to kill Mello. He cried and shouted afterward to stick to his lie. At this point in the series, it had been YEARS since he first picked up the Death Note, and so had become very, very good at acting in character.

A lot of people make this mistake, when you watch the dad in the hospital scene, Light seems to be crying over his dad. How could he not? He is crying real tears.
They are wrong. He isn't crying over his father passing, tears of FRUSTRATION are slipping out because he didn't get the name he wanted that his dad could see with his shinigami eyes.
He is crying because he didn't get what he wanted, the name.
Light saw his dad as a pawn. Nothing more, nothing less.
This is further proven in the ending episode.
Light distance's himself from his father by calling his dad by his real name instead of saying "my father"
"You mean N. Yagami? (I forgot his dad's real name so I just put N.)

I am actually quite infuriated with this video. Jon Ronson (The writer of the test used here) has no pyschological training, and some of his "conditions" were suspect to say the least. This is one of the biggest faults of self-help and most "testing" sorts of books out there, the author has no actual credentials in order to make this .
"Ronson is not legally or professionally entitled to have or use these scoring criteria, and his tactic of pulling up one- or two-item titles to label someone is sharply at odds with the appropriate use of the instrument. "
      psychopathysociety.org/page/RonsonCommentary
The page also has several other criticisms of not only Jon himself, but the practices he uses, and the practice that the person in this video is using. Namely - the idea that someone, especially someone with no professional or comprehensive education in psychology or more specifically psychopathy, could diagnose someone with psychopathy.
This is untrue and a dangerous misconception, the fact that this is a fictional character being talked about does not excuse the maker of this video "SirLantz", in fact, because of the "Slippery Slope" or how one idea can quickly spiral into another, SirLantz should take this especially to heart. You have no credentials to be making this assessment, and you should stop.

I'd like to point out that this is for fun and by no means am I qualified psychiatrist (who knows maybe one day haha).
Everything I have used is from the book I have read and my judgements were based on my experience watching the show.

@@SirLantzXD mmhm... forgive me if I don't quite buy that. The problem with these sorts of videos is that it makes other people think that they are somehow qualified to do this based on the book. Jon has no power in this regard, in fact, as a psychology major, the entire concept of a "psychopath test" is suspect. It is famously taught that these sorts of test can be notoriously inaccurate even whenever the test giver is a licenced professional. Basically, it comes down to a lot of factors, that used to be widely misconstrued. Hare's test was a step in the right direction, but Jon himself is guilty of the exact things that made psychopathy so difficult to pin down for real.
My point here is that this kind of information is dangerous to spread, as it is misinformation, and the type of misinformation, that is psychological misinformation, is particularly bad. This isn't just a "criticism" this is me saying, what you are doing is misleading and dangerous at a bottom line. There should either be; A) A disclaimer that you are not a professional and that you're "'conclusion" is no way based on verified information, or B) Actual psychologists and other informers that you can draw your information from, or even you're own education in psychology. The way you present the video says to me at least you intended for your information to be taken seriously.
      Thank you for your time.

Just like Light, we don't have any details about about Walter childhood, but it's pretty clear to me that they both always have been like that, since day one, but life change circunstances brought up what was deep buried inside their minds. When Light lost his memory, he the thought that Kira's ideology is dangerously similar to his, but try to shut the idea down. If he never came across the DN, he probably woudn't became a serial kiler, but chances are he would go the same road as Mikami.

Your video is really good, and the more I think about it, the more I agree, but 3 ideas to consider:
    1. Light can be a narcissist. "God of the new world" that's also a dark triad diagnostic, in which callousness and a grandiose view of himself are also part of the diagnose.
    or maybe
    2. Light is not a psychopath, Light is dehumanizing the criminals, dehumanizing allows neurotypical humans to kill, and even enjoy doing horrors to other people.
I would recommend Nick Haslam's theory of dehumanization as a starting point to read about that if you are interested.
    3. His self control points to the other diagnose that is part of the dark triad, Machiavellianism.... also consider the utilitarian use of sex and the long term goal.

It was honestly depressing watching him manipulate Rem so shamelessly just before L died which was even sadder in itself considering L, despite having been raised to be a fairly jaded and calculated individual who himself might show traits of sociopathy/high functioning aspergers, has finally found a friend in Light that he could relate to on an intellectual basis. Also, I think the point of depicting Light's reaction in such a manner when his dad died was a way of brutally emphasizing how difficult it is to believe his outwardly apparent emotions, because afterwards he barely brings up his father's death in any meaningful fashion that would depict grief or despair as one otherwise would with such an apparently close and loving family. It was almost like the author wanted to wave in our face the ridiculous notion that Light could actually feel remorse for those closest to him. I believe he may have been capable of it before getting the notebook which almost certainly brought out already existing psychopathic tendencies by acting as a mediator for them because of the way he behaved when he lost his memory of the book. But ultimately, he had an immature notion of justice and human nature as a whole and I feel like Near and the final scenes in the show illustrated just how pathetic of a human he became as a result, being anything but graceful in defeat only to finally realize all the things he will ultimately lose in his last moments of life. Even then though as he's flailing like a fish out of water, even with all the regret he's feeling, it's hard to say he in fact felt any remorse. He definitely didn't ever seem to see the irony in his behavior and he definitely didn't see it as significant. He thought the world could be fixed by getting rid of all of the bad guys when it is human nature to, given certain circumstances people are often born into, fall into the trap of criminality which is why we have a justice system that does offer people the opportunity to be rehabilitated. Whether you agree with the fashion in which justice systems around the world operate is a different question, but stifling out lives for petty crimes is obviously not the way to improve on a system with a purpose to rehabilitate and retain lives. Idk why I even gotta mention that lol, although there are some real people/crazies out there (fortunately not many) that sympathize with Light's philosophy whether they have watched the show or not...
You could talk about this show for days down to extremely minute nuances. I've even seen a video about the significance of the potato chip scene lol. It's honestly a testament to it's legendary status as one of the most popular mentally stimulating anime series. I loved this video and thought it was a well thought out analysis on Light's psyche. I only recently watched this show having heard friends call it over hyped years ago and its probably much more interesting to watch it now that I've matured a fair bit (considering I first heard of it almost a decade ago when I was about 13). I was never very disciplined in following many series back then, including anime series, because I never really cared much for them and the pandemic offered me an opportunity for a personal Renaissance with various shows and games that didn't immediately interest me at the time. I'm wondering how many more people read this exhausting block of text and experienced the same thing lol

Honeslty, once Light was told that he wasnt "chosen" and just found teh Death Note by acident, only to still act as if he could become a God of the New World... by that point I knew he was going down a Dark Path and for every Death he caused to civilians, law agents or just people who would have no reason to harm him, it just hammered down how far gone he was.
He went mad with Power and during his Memory Loss, we still see signs that if he didnt get the Death Note, he would be tempted to use it and considers how he would use it.
It honeslty makes me wonder how the Story would go if Light joined his Father in the Kira Search team after he graduated, with a Kira who only kills Criminals and is carefull about not getting caught or harming Law agents or Civilians.

What makes someone a killer? were they born as that or events happened to them made them do what they did.
There's a Korean drama titled "Strangers From Hell" or "Hell Is Other People"
i do recommend giving that a study and you may sees the answer to that.

Would be kind of nice for it to be mentioned that technically minors can’t be diagnosed with psychopathy and will instead be diagnosed with conduct disorders, in order to put them on the path towards positive coping and adjustment. It’s true that there are lots of early signs a child may grow up to be a psychopath but it can be prevented through treatment. This diagnostic criteria you’re using would be used for adults, and since light is a minor I feel like this should be kept in mind. Plus it’s important to reiterate that you can’t be 100% certain of a diagnosis unless you’re a qualified psychiatrist. I know this is just a theoretical analysis video of a fictional character but people tend to take things like this as fact and then go around claiming they know what makes a psychopath when it’s actually a very complicated thing to diagnose
Aside from that though I do think this is a really interesting topic to discuss, especially when considering whether or not light’s idea at it’s core had any merit. There are some truly evil people on this planet, people who have real influence and could make real positive change but instead choose not to and hoard resources for themselves because they have the power to do so. And in the hands of someone with enough intellect and ability, the death note has the potential to be used to make positive change. But the thing is it would take years to accomplish, years of tiny movements towards the goal. Not just going after every serial killer you can think of the way light did. Because in the end most of them are already incarcerated anyway, at least if you know enough about them to kill them, and even if they’re not, although getting rid of mass killers would stop them from killing, in the grand scheme of things the difference would be kind of negligible. It wouldn’t change the corrupt system at it’s source.
So rewatching death note all I keep thinking is whether or not, if light had maybe been older and less naive, less mentally undeveloped and emotional the way teenagers tend to be, would he have been able to accomplish the task he claimed he wanted to? Or was he just a serial killer wearing the mask of a top grade well behaved student, who deep down was always prone to murder and just needed the justification to get himself to do it?

I really enjoyed this analysis. I believe that Death Note was so psychological and at some points pretty religious to the point that it was haunting. I liked how you broke down and explain your points too with different scenes and used specific words to get your point across. Nice job. I'm going to watch Death Note again. Also on my channel I analyze anime and shows too so watching this was really awesome.

I'm a very small youtuber just starting out but my first video is an analysis on the show The Proud Family because it is on Disney+ and there is going to be a reboot coming soon. I also love anime too. My next video which I'm putting out between Sunday/Monday is going to be on the anime Michiko to Hatchin (or it's other name Finding Paradiso). I'm so excited and happy to generally start my channel and you have a new subscriber. I would love to see more of your content. In my opinion, you set a good example of many ways to analyze a show.
