2020 Jeep Gladiator | Part Jeep, Part Truck

  • The Gladiator is and is not a "Wrangler truck." The best way to look at Jeep's most practical vehicle to date is really as a cross-breed of RAM and Jeep stuffed into a Wrangler-styled outfit. The suspension takes ques are parts from the RAM 1500, but retains the Dana solid axles Wrangler fans love. The frame is an entirely new design to withstand teh rigors of off-roading and towing 7,650 pounds. The grille looks like the Wrangler's but has been enlarged for better cooling and the looks belie the size of the Gladiator, it's ENORMOUS. If you're looking for the ultimate mid-sized truck in America, this might just be it.

    My Compliments on an excellent presentation! Lot of facts ,little emotion and no bullshit !!
    I have had and driven many jeeps (also an H 1 hummer ) but my most favourite memories were from driving around my little Jeep SCRAMBLER convertible pick up truck, many moons ago! As such I’ve been waiting with bated breath for this vehicle, and will put my money down as soon as the diesel version comes out. The base model will more than suffice ! CONGRATULATIONS JEEP, WELL DONE !

    Well done #Toledo . I am thrilled to see someone finally got the memo on #Headroom . I congratulate Jeep for offering #Manuals across the board as enthusiast drivers (and who else buys Jeeps) really want them. My only knock is the undersized bed, I did a double take at the car show when I saw they had to remove the front wheels from the mountain bikes they had standing in the bed.

      Daniel Blaney, Yup!!! It would be nice if it was about $4k cheaper too. $40k + (Sport S with a few basic options) for a truck that is too long overall but with a bed that is too short means I just saved myself $40k +.

    Alex, how is the chassis stiffness, especially as compared to (1) other pickups or (2) other Renegades? That is usually the big negative compromise of a pickup for big off camber off roading and one might expect it to be worse with a soft top pickup. Is it?

    Great and thorough review, as always, Alex. "Utilitarian" seems like the perfect descriptor for this model; seems like a vehicle you could happily own for a very long time. I've been quite impressed with the quality and build of my 2016 Jeep; I think some aspects of FCA are performing surprisingly well. Really impressed that they've made the base model something someone might actually want to own.

  • @kipamore
    @kipamore Před 5 lety +1

    I am seriously considering the Gladiator as my next purchase. Other pickups tow, but this one is also a convertible. Other pickups go off-road, but those dont tow. This thing just ticks so many boxes if you are only going to have 1 car. For the same money, you could have a pretty nice Camry. Would you actually want a Camry over this? A “car” that goes seriously off road, that also tows and hauls, that also gets respectable mileage, that’s also a convertible and the doors come off? It’s hard to argue with that. My next mid-life-chrysler.

    Hey Alex can ask jeep if they plan on putting that sliding soft top like the one available on wrangler

    • @grtelli
      @grtelli Před 5 lety

      HARRY ELDRIDGE -> The top that you’re referencing is really slick. Jeep won’t offer that on the Gladiator because it wouldn’t have enough “retract room” to justify it. That top works on the 4-door JL because the top retracts to an area over the cargo bay- giving back seat passengers the “open air” feeling.

    • @grtelli
      @grtelli Před 5 lety +1

      V-MAFIA->. Jeep puts the window switches on the dash so that when 1 person wants to take the doors off, that one person only has to go right to the dash to roll all of the windows down 1st.
      As far as door locks- always good to have door locks on ever door

    Much as was the case with the hard-cover bed of the Chevy Avalanche, I have always had a hard time understanding why these automotive companies don't design these type of "hard-top convertible" trucks with standard storage for these awkward removable pieces. I was always removing them and placing them in my garage with the hopes that it wouldn't rain on me when I was too far away to replace them or to simply keep them out of the way when hauling. Since spare tires on trucks are universally stored underneath the vehicle, why don't they simply design a false bottom in the bed with a steel reinforced covering that can support cargo weight? That way you could remove the roof/bed covering, lift the false bottom of the bed, place the pieces inside, close the false floor and then everything would be stored neatly out of the way. Am I oversimplifying the matter or are automotive makers simply not willing to spend the money for the R&D?

    It's a very interesting, even oddly compelling, vehicle. But I struggle for practical applications outside of maybe getting around your huge ranch (ya know, that huge ranch everyone has!) Hardcore hobbyists with money may take a Gladiator Rubicon as an OHV basis from new, but not very many in a world that's heavily focused on modifying used vehicles (and also values the inherent attributes of the Wrangler for OHV use). I guess that leaves regular midsized pickup truck buyers who have a need of midsize pickup truck capacities who are looking for something more characterful and fun, as the last reasonable market. But mostly it seems like this is going to be a fashion accessory, sadly...

    5:29 - 5:35 yeah but the base model gladiator is the same price as a Tacoma TRD Offroad edition. With the gladiator you get less towing capacity at 4,000 ibs and the taco coming in at 6,400. I guess the cool factor of owning a jeep and having a convertible/removable doors makes it worth it? I love the look of it, definitely stands out more than the taco, but bang for buck feels like I would be throwing away money vs. the taco.

      Oddly enough I sort of agree. I wish it was about 2' shorter because the 5' bed is already a little silly. But then I also wish there was a 2 door version with perhaps a 7' bed where you could put 4x8 sheets of things in and they wouldn't hang out past the tailgate.

    Great review as always Alex. I had a very long comment typed out. I'll just say, anyone that considers this vehicle, you must be very brand-blind or ill-informed. Weigh all options and specs with other options, please, people. This thing is silly. Not to mention, if you plan on taking this on the trail; it has two feet longer wheelbase than a JKU, TWO feet. I look forward to seeing these in parking lots with too many light bars, unnecessarily large tires with a cheap suspension lift, and absolutely zero dirt on the body. All that said, they'll sell all of them.

      Tony P for my lifestyle and location it's perfect. It's anything but silly. And considering you've never likely been in one what do you know. For a lot of us it will be a great tool.

      @@jjames2162 I know the spec sheet and I know the demographic. If it works for you, great. But if you're honestly considering buying, weigh you other options in the segment before signing on the dotted line.

      Tony P I disagree. When we think of crap chrysler products, what we are really talking about is crap benz products. I have two promasters and a fiat 500, and they are quality vehicles and ultra reliable. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true. It’s the dark days of benz that continues to give fca a bad rep.
      As to the gladiator, recognize that it’s truly unique. It’s a 4 door pickup that hauls and tows, but it’s also a king of the hill off-roader. Oh and it’s a convertible whose doors and windshield come off. NOTHING else is remotely like that.

      @@kipamore When did I mention MB or 'crap Chrysler' products? I have nothing against Jeep or Chrysler products. Though they are, statistically, WELL below the industry average in reliability:
      www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2019-us-vehicle-dependability-studyvds
      The main, unique, thing in this segment for the Gladiator is the solid front axle and the absurd price-point. A Tundra hauls more, costs less, has significantly more the power, and comes with Toyota reliability (see above). Though I understand it's much larger and in an (arguably) different segment. That said, there are even more suitable vehicles, for most consumers, that directly compare to the Gladiator that are also much cheaper.
      Have you seen the windshield removed from a JK/JL? Not only is it a huge asspain to fold down (not remove), it still leaves a 'frame' around the area. Gone are the days of CJ-5/7 or even 73 series Land Cruisers thanks to safety standards. The doors, I'll give you that. Though nearly every newer Jeep I see here in Utah (or anywhere I've traveled) still has the standard doors installed though-out the year. I suppose it's along the same lines of driving around in your Porsche GT2 MR down Beverly Hills Blvd and claiming it posted the fasted laptime on the 'Ring for a modified production car. Great it can do it, though it'll never do that again. Merely bragging rights.
      Lastly, I don't know what your criteria is for "king of the hill off-roader" but the Land Cruiser guys may have something to say about that. To Americans, maybe, but there are 194 other countries that will attest to the fact that the Land Cruiser is the only choice.
