Saw Paperhouse when it first came out on video and the scene where she is in the bath still terrifies me, it was so well done. Also saw Tideland about 10 years or so ago with hubby and ended up getting into a huge argument with him about what he considered pedophile undertones. We haven’t mentioned it since lol

So happy to see you mention Paperhouse - I wasn't sure it could count as horror on its face but yeah it can be dark. I did see the symbolism you are probably talking about, too. It reminds me (not in every way) of Mirrormask in it's strangeness. Loved it.

Hey Emma, I'm so glad you mentioned Paperhouse. A highly allegorical and unsung film. And you sang its praises beautifully. 13 Tzameti is a French and Georgian film. Tzameti is the Georgian word for 13. The main character is Georgian. And I thought the family he was connected to was very different in someway I couldn't put my finger on. Later I realized they were Georgians. Now I'm living here in Tbilisi, Georgia. A friend of mine worked with the main actor from 13 Tzameti in a beautiful film called Dede. (You should look for it.) I mentioned this film to you a while ago. And yeah talk about intense! The American remake is a decent film. But the original is one of the most nerve-wracking films ever made. It's a crime film taken to the horror level.
I still am interested in your take on Stewart Gordon's Dagon. And Polanski's The Tenant.

There was a UK kids tv show broadcast in 1972 called ESCAPE INTO NIGHT .It was based on Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr ,which is the same source material as Paper House. I saw Paper House in 1988 and was surprised just how similar it was to the earlier show. I saw Escape sometime in the 70's ,I remember the last two eps really scared me back then. FYI Escape can be found on You Tube .

Tideland was the only one I saw from the list. I was so intrigued from the trailer.. and had no idea how disturbing it was going to be. I thought it would be a dramatic art piece by the big Gilliam. But surprise surprise! I loved it but was ready to turn it off multiple time to how disturbing some scenes were. The little girl was insanely talented and just can't believe how they got here to perform her very difficult role. I hear Terry Gilliam had to give a foreword when this beast screened. it was not taken so positively that night! Anyways, great film!

I remember watching paperhouse when I was really young. One scene in particular stayed with me throughout my childhood(the hammer scene). I also was thinking , is this movie for kids? but then the horror elements started and even though I was scared. I couldn't look away
Looking into this movie plot more. My father was abused as a kid-. He became abusive and alcoholic as a parent. We were really poor when we came to the U.S.A so the aesthetic of this movie spoke to me. I remember connecting with her having an alcoholic father and that scared the shit out of me.

I'm not sure if it counts as horror, maybe more dark comedy/sci fi but Sorry to Bother You is definitely one of the most unique, surreal movies I've ever seen. Silver Tongues is also a very twisty, dark drama that I think would be right up your alley. Love your channel, keep up the great work!

"my little eye" is a not very well known horror movie that has Kris lemche and a quick cameo by bradley cooper. The premise: As part of an Internet reality show, five people sign up to spend six months in a mansion while cameras film constantly. If each person stays the entire length of the show, everyone walks away with $1 million. It's got a lot of really cool twists and turns and doesn't go where you would expect.

Finally, someone talking about Tideland. I've been praising that movie since it came out. I think the only reason people didn't like it is because it is so dark. But it's also weirdly beautiful, and strange, and whimsical, and sad, and gross, and funny. Leave it to Terry Gilliam.

I really enjoy your videos and will check out all of these. I have a suggestion may not be graphic but I did find it disturbing and have done multiple viewings. “Exhibit A” is a found footage film that really pulled me in and though I am admittedly a found footage fan, this one is definitely one of the better examples. Best way to describe it is, the mundane gone horribly wrong. There are some subtle key moments that happen in the background that I’m sure you all can appreciate hence the rewatch.

Same! I’m a sucker for anything creepy and surreal. I was initially just going to recommend the works of Jan Švankmajer, in case you weren’t already familiar. And then it occurred to me that I want even more to recommend Maya Deren’s 1943 short film, Meshes of the Afternoon. Black and white, 14 minutes long, not horror per se, but it’ll still scratch that itch. I first saw it, playing on a loop, projected on the wall of an art museum I was visiting (can’t remember which one), and I was instantly intrigued.

Saw Paperhouse at the cinema when it came out and it still plays on my mind, the underlying theme is very disturbing (in the same way as it was in Sucker Punch) but the overall presentation is very childlike. Also need to ask if you have ever seen Karaoke Terror (Shôwa kayô daizenshû), I read the novel and have seen the trailers but can not seem to get my hands on a copy. Anything based on a Ryu Murukami novel has to be worth a watch, I really hope someone makes a version of In the Miso Soup.
