I really hope vhs 85 takes the scarier more serious route. The list of directors makes me think it will be
94 was good
@@youtubeaccountserio2633 indeed and I thought 99 was too
Ditto that! I hope so too. I guess serious and scary is harder to pull off though, so they've been going for the lower hanging fruit of silly, which when you combine it with cheap and rushed, is not a good thing lol
Agreed. Was a little disappointed with 99. Needed a more serious tone
Thank you! I love me some good horror/comedy but it just doesn't fit in the VHS movies.
I like "Parallel Monsters" so much more than any other segment in the series. I think it could be a whole movie of its own. The alternate universe it sets up is endlessly fascinating to me.
I think that It had a really good idea, but it was poorly executed which is sad, and what's even worse is that it was put into a piece of shit film.
Same. I would comment putting Parallel Monsters in first as well, if I didn't find your comment. That's just another level of what-the-fuck-ness! But I guess it's the disturbing sci-fi in it, more than the horror, that really get to us (I don't think it was poorly executed at all btw.)
I since kept an eye on Nacho Vigalongo's work. Like, his movie Timecrimes is quite fascinating as well.
Just another reason I enjoyed Viral.
That's interesting because that's one of my least favorite segments in the whole franchise as I think it's beyond silly lol. Crazy how polarizing these shorts are.
Yes. That one was great. They could easily expand that.
Ozzys Dungeon was quite strange, but seeing the girl get her wish was hilarious 😂. It was worth the strange just to see that payoff.
it was peak camp horror
I thought the same. Very strange!!
I absolutely loved the cosmic horror aspect. and the lady that had to keep that eldritch being inside of her? holy shit! It was so insane and I loved the effects. my mom doesn't think so highly of this segment but I do!
Flylo don't miss. Crazy shit
The twist of wanting her parents dead was surprising
VHS 94 legitimately pulled the series back from being left on an extremely sour note. I adore that film in specific, the first two segments sat with me for days. so creepy.
Glad to see "Amateur Night" rated so high. What I loved about it was how Hannah Fierman played a convincingly vulnerable and cute chick AND a homicidal succubus-creature able to rip sleazy guys to pieces.
As always, thanks for all of your hard work, Emma. This must have taken a very long time to watch all of these! 💙
Thanks Meghan!
Imagine if they add Koji Shirashi (from Noroi fame) to make a cosmic found footage horror and the director of Gonjiam too to make fun ghost story. Or like add Adrian Tofei (from Be My Cat fame) That would be awesome.
noroi is a masterpiece, I don't know whether it's a peculiarity of jap cinema but was so realistic, all those tv shows segments, the village with this weird knots hanging out their doors..just perfect
Check out Ura Horror, Koji has a short in it.
Gonjiam is wasn’t a fun ghost story that shit was scary.
VHS 99 did NOT use enough Retrowave and analogue aesthetic. Those are literally super popular right now with 90s nostalgia being at the hight of its popularity. This is why we’re seeing a lot of Liminal Space content, the Backrooms, Chillwave, Lofi, Vaporwave stuff on Instagram and CZcams and VHS 99 could have totally played into that.
Everyone hates on VHS Viral but IMO 99 is the worst in the bunch and it was the biggest let down. There wasn’t much about it that reminded me of the 90s.
Like, imagine a segment where a group of kids decide to stay and hide inside a Mall so they can explore it after hours only to find there is no way out and all the doors to the outside have just vanished.
It would be similar to the Backrooms but not an exact copy, it would be super nostalgic with the 80s and 90s mall aesthetic with the neon lights and 90s mall music playing while the kids panically try and find a way out of the mall.
I just really wished they would have leaned into the aesthetic more.
I still think my overall favorite segment is “Safe Haven” it’s such a good party watch. And the mass s**cide scene is so quick but frightening
Oh wow A Ride In The Park is one of my overall favorites 😆Though I think I prefer the comedic ones in general. I really struggle with Anthologies because as you say, there's always ones that drag the rest down and make it feel like a bit of a slog. But you just cross your fingers and hope that the ones that stand out will make the rest worth it.
100% each segment is a surprise! I didn’t realise you were a big fan of zombies!
I really loved the first VHS. I need to watch it again. I just saw VHS 99 and it wasn’t terrible but sometimes it gets so silly I just wish it was scary lol. I’ll never forget the segment in VHS 2 with the cult in the woods. That one had me SHOOK. I still get scared watching this one.
Zombies in the woods I think
@@sophisticatedluna6503i think he's confused with safe heaven and the one with the zombies
The first two films are on here if you still want to watch. Viral is too.
This was great, Emma. For what it's worth, "Safe Haven" has the funniest ending. Cracks me up every doo-dah time.
Love this Emma! We're having a V/H/S marathon this weekend! My favs in order are, 2, 1, 94, 99, and Viral. Really surprised to see 2 rated below a 7, though glad to see Safe Haven as your #1 segment!
My problem with the Suicide Bid segment in 99 is that it couldn't restrain itself. Being buried alive mistakenly is terrifying enough, and I felt the supernatural element was really silly and unnecessary. Really took me out of the story.
Agreed. Could have been one of the most disturbing in the series if it restrained itself. The flooding in the casket was pretty spooky.
this is perfect timing, i've just given them all a rewatch after seeing 99. i love this series, the good and the bad.
i'm surprised you didn't love slumber party alien abduction! That one is one of my favorites. My biggest issue with a lot of these shorts is the reason behind why things are being filmed, and I felt that putting a camera on the dog was so creative and made sense. Great video regardless!!
My faves:
Frame Narrative: Holy Hell
1. Slumber Party Alien Abduction
2. Safe Haven
3. The Subject
4. The Sick Thing that Happened To Emily When She Was Younger
5. Storm Drain
This is a very unpopular opinion, but I think Amateur Night is overrated.
Slumber Party Alien Abduction even went all of the way and killed the dog. It was already scary, but that showed this isn’t a movie with any happy endings.
Thanks for the hard work! Great video! Safe Haven is my personal fav out of all of them
Wow, this might be the final push I needed to actually check this franchise out. Thanks for the deep dive!!
I remember when I first saw the original and I had to show my friends it. We got so scared and every year for Halloween we watch the movies and I’m so glad they have a new one every year. …..oh and hail rattma 🖤🖤🖤
Loved your ranking!
sorry i just gotta say, you knocked a Ride in the Park down for not being "original", but i completely disagree ive never seen content in a first person perspective from a zombie, that was awesome and super original!
I love Viral. It really started to grow on me after second watch. I love the chaos of it.
It's not my favorite but probably the most fun to watch.
While I wouldn't say I love it, I def have appreciation for Viral. I still haven't seen Gorgeous Vortex yet though, as I don't have the dvd/blu ray. Someday perhaps i'll chance across it cheap somewhere and pick it up. I actually liked the wrap around, it was creepy enough to keep me engaged, and I do feel like it continues the story laid out in the other wrap arounds, it's supposed to be a culmination of the whole cursed video thing. I think folks are a lil harsh on this entry, when I've seen FAR worse movies. Both Dante and Parallel Monsters are fun shorts.
I still find Viral MUCH better than 99.
Viral was an odd one for me. It contains two of my least favourites (Dante and Circles) but also two of my most favourites (Parallel Monsters and Bonestorm).
Safe haven is definitely my favorite short out of all the VHS movies
WOW a ranking of the segments is amazing! Great work!
Thank you!
I totally appreciated the work you put into this deep dive, and had a blast taking this trip with you through all of the awesome horror shorts! My favorite is probably To Hell and Back as I was really blown away by the set design (although Dante the Great and The Subject might be tied for second)! Definitely something to love/fear for everyone!
this is so cool!! you’re too sweet to us, Emma. 🥺💗
Ahhhh I’m so happy to hear you liked Ozzy’s Dungeon! Flylo’s film work is definitely an acquired taste but I think it’s incredible… I am definitely a bit of a stan though 😅
It’s a few years since I watched the first 2 films, and I’ve not seen Viral (probably never will lol), so I’m due a rewatch - but I really enjoyed 94 & 99. The Subject is probably my favourite from those two.
Great review 🎉
New subscriber; thank you for this vid!!
Thanks for this. I was looking for someone to update the rankings. As far as I know, you're the first.
Thanks for a great review, great for October. I gave up on the VHS series on the second segment of Viral, but now I know I need to give some of the later films a try.
Great video 🧡
One of my favorite videos of yours to date! Can't wait for V/H/S/85 next year! We have some heavyhitters coming back!
Thank you!!
The subject SHOOK me. I had to take a break after that one 😅 loved it!
Great work Emma! I remember being super excited Timo was doing another segment for 94 as Safe Haven is my favorite! Definitely lived up to my expectations!
There's a full-length film of Slumber Party Alien Abduction coming called Kids vs Aliens coming to VOD and Shudder early next year. Got to see it at FF!
Great video, this must've taken ages! But please avoid storm drains for the foreseeable future, you know, just in case.
Hail Raatma
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I need to watch the new one!!! Really dig the series and this deep dive!!!! thanks Emma!
All segments, that's awesome! 😮And wait, there was a series?!
I don't dislike Viral as much as everyone else does! I still had a really great time with it!
I love the way Emma says 'VHacheS.' It's so adorably Australian! 😄
Our favorite segments line up, just in a different order.
I loved this video. I'm a big fan of anthology horror movies and the V/H/S series is one of the best today.
Loved 'To Hell and Back', "The Gawkers', 'Storm Drain' (Hail Raatma! LOL!), Amateur Night, A Ride in the Park. I still haven't seen Viral yet so, I can't comment on those segments
Safe haven was my favorite . Absolutely nutty lol
I've never seen any of the VHS movies because I'm not a really fan of found footage but this video really just convinced me it's worth checking out!
Safe haven is still my favorite
I agree totally. You were very generous with scores with some of the not-so-good segments. VHS Viral would've received 1s and 2s from me. LOL
VHS 99 and Terrifier 2 ready to watch for the weekend thanks Emma
Been waiting for this all day! Had to get home and in my comfy clothes! And wine 🍷 needed some wine and a notepad 😊🎃❤
Hail Ratma!
My favorite segment in each movies.
V/H/S: 10/31/98
V/H/S 2: Safe Haven
V/H/S/94: The Subject
V/H/S/99: To Hell and Back
I don't have a favorite in Viral.
Love these V/H/S movies!
I was surprised about the negativity in general about Viral. Ive only seen the first three VHS films and its my favourite. Now I’m looking forward to the last two
Bad day then a spooky astronauts new video notification hits= good day. Spooky astronauts video on VHS?=great day!!
Safe Haven is a 10 for sure. It’s the best one in any of these movies. So memorable I always compare cult horror films to that one.
The Empty Wake is my favorite segment of all the V/H/S movies
I really liked " A Ride In The Park". Zombie from a GoPro perspective? I'm in!
I’ll never get over listening to Aussies say the letter ‘H’. It tickles my fancy.
your comment about the subject looking like a video game makes me hope they make a segment formatted like a gaming stream someday!
I could listen to you say "📼" ALL day!
V/H/S/85,
will follow the same formula. The film has tapped Bruckner once again who recently made the new hellraiser, and other directors involved in this new installment are Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone/Sinister), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), Mike P. Nelson (Wrong Turn), and Gigi Saul Guerrero (The Purge series
You’re kidding me! Terror was almost my favorite Segment in the entire series. It was so gooooood
Ran here from your Instagram stories and because I love you. I also. love how long and in depth this video is. Definitely worth staying up until 3am. ❤
Thanks Jordan ❤️❤️
This is very cool! Great job Emma! 👍🏽 100% agree with your ranking. I was very disappointed with VHS 99. I like it better than Viral and that's the best things I can say about it. I really liked the Suicide Bid segment though. That was actually my fave. And as someone who was at a university and in a sorority in the early and mid 00s, we recorded A LOT of our ritual nights, so I think that could be accurate. 😊
Hey Emma, really excited to dive into this video, but first I HAVE TO ASK. Are you excited for VHS 85??!! It already got announced and the directors are stacked for it!
I mention it in this video :)
@@spookyastronauts I finished and was excited to hear u knew
Thanks for the reviews, Emma. You clearly put in some hard work and thorough analysis into this, which I appreciate since I couldn't remember half of the stories in the V/H/S series. Obviously, I still think the first V/H/S is the best, mostly because there were some good up-and-coming directors who would go one to bigger and better projects. Here's a list of my favorite stories:
SECOND HONEYMOON, TUESDAY THE 17TH and 10/31/98 (from V/H/S)
SLUMBER PARTY ALIEN ABDUCTION (from V/H/S 2)
STORM DRAIN and THE EMPTY WAKE (from V/H/S 94)
SUICIDE BID and TO HELL AND BACK (from V/H/S 99)
@@IVNHYPRFNK Thanks for the tip. I will definitely give it a watch.
Just like many horror fans, during spooky season I try to watch a scary film every day. Fans nowadays have lotsa macabre options: they can catch their faves on one of the many cable channel *fests*, follow prompts shared by popular horror sites, shop at 2nd hand stores or visit the library for available DVDs, play-it-by-ear, etc. Last year, I used a prompt, but limited myself to films that I had not seen, including several foreign films. (I admit that I missed the seasonal joy & nostalgia of seeing many of my annual favorites, but it challenged me to both step out of my comfort zone and to think more deeply about what each prompt *could* entail. All while trying to avoid trailers & spoilers.) This year, I want to fill-in some of the *holes*, especially some of my most glaringly missing titles (like several films in the V/H/S franchise - which I've had on in the background but have not actually watched), as well as films that aren't traditionally considered horror but find their way onto horror lists just the same (e.g. Requiem for a Dream, Come And See, Bug). Your rankings and reviews are going to be a helpful resource this September/October. Thank you. And pets to Gromit.
The first two movies were great
That cult clip in part 2 is nuts. Oh my god. Crazy. That's my favorite one. And I liked the alien abduction one that followed just because the use of sound was so intense. (Poor dog)
I'm going to dive-bomb into ALL of your content.
VHS 2 is hands down the best out of them all
I would love to see the producers team up with a streaming platform and make a V/H/S portal where you can make a playlist of your favorites
I'm so excited for 85!
'99 was so disappointing. I loved the series, but maybe it's run its course. The episodes in the latest film felt like they just threw together previously rejected episodes to capitalize on the series' popularity. There was no tension, or twists in the episodes. They were all just practical effects monsters without unpredictability; they all felt pretty similar.
Thanks for this show. Love these detailed retrospectives. That's a lot of work, it is appreciated.
Best ones in vhs 99 was ozies dungeon and suicide bid for 99 and vhs 94 subject and storm drain the first vhs is still the best 💛
How has it run its course when there’s different directors every film with new and fresh ideas lol. Make that make any lick of sense
@@jonn8911 It needs new direction, or better direction, new ideas. The VHS tape angle now feels outdated. Maybe they can call it iPhone 2007 next time or something.
@@steely10 cringe.
@@steely10 vhs 94 was really good 99 wasn’t that scary but had amazing charm to it. Just don’t watch it lol
Im glad Im not the only person who loves Tape 56. It has the most raw and grungy "VHS" vibe out of ant of the shorts.
tbh i would like to see more shorts with that kinda effect too, we've also got amateur night and the sick thing that happened to emily when she was younger too with that effect
I enjoy anthologies a lot, like VHS, Creepshow and Southbound 😊
Favorites (top to bottom):
1. VHS - Amateur Night
2. VHS 2 - Safe Haven
3. 94 - Storm Drain
4. Viral - Parallel Monsters
I haven’t seen 99 yet lol
I loved watching VHS 99 on Shudder. Found footage is my absolute favorite genre in horror. One of my favorites is VHS 94. And so excited for VHS 85 next year. What are your thoughts on Hell House LLC trilogy?
Amateur night, Safe Haven, and Slumber Party alien Abduction are my favorites!
99 was so disappointing for me 😪 i was hopping something like 94. Still had fun watching
Vhs 85 directors list is stacked
Great Great Great Reviews👍🏿💯👍🏿and Great Rankings. I Luuuuv Your Channel. When I Want To Know About A Movie, I Watch Your Reviews First..."TRUSTING YOU."
also, To Hell And Back director Joseph and Vanessa Winters also directed Deadstream which is released in Shudder and is an absolute blast to watch
My favorite segments are Safe Haven, Slumber Party Alien Adbuction, The Sick Thing that Happened to Emily When She Was Younger, The Subject, Shredding, and Dante the Great.
Creepshow and V/H/S are my favorite horror anthologies.
I enjoy the "screen life" format but I've never known what to call it until now
V/H/S is such a great franchise. I was introduced through Raatma and I don't regret checking the movie out. I absolutely love this style of horror films and the time and effort that are put into everything!
I didn't particularly like V/H/S 99, Suicide Bid, Ozzy's Dungeon, and Hell and Back are the only ones I really remember enjoying. Shredder was awfully silly with the zombies, and the ending had me bursting out laughing. Gawkers just made me uncomfortable but I appreciated the Gorgon effects!
I adore Hell and Back, Mabel is one of the greatest characters ever written!(/hj) I absolutely love her and all the demons she introduced us to. I'm more of a horror creature lover than concept lover, but V/H/S is making me appreciate all the little things!
Kinda late but heyy, VHS the original and the 95 one are my favs! they're the only movies from the saga that I can somehow take seriously. I love em.
Tho, I think 99 is really creative and deserves appreciation for how original the segments are. It gives me hope for the found footage genre!
Great video and hail Raatma
Another perfect score for this this was bat shit crazy in the best way
The Ratma segment reminded me of a very old computer game Manhunter II. There was a rat man in the sewers.
I literally just finished my VHS marathon a few minutes ago and then this went up! BFFs if you ask me 😉
The subject is my favorite purely because of the concept. I love the idea of low tech cyborgs.
AHH Great idea.
I really enjoyed 94’, & 99’ a lot. As someone that also really liked 1 & 2…. I thought the last 2 were pretty strong entries.
For what they were with the cheesy tone and all even.
Wasn’t huge on Viral enough to that I didn’t finish it >.
I'm surprised you like ozzys dungeon so much. I liked the twist but also thought the end felt kinda meh. Super impressed flying lotus was the director though lol.
My favorite segments is Ozzy's dungeons and Slumber party alien abduction ❤️❤️
Surprised you rated 10/3/98 as low as you did. I guess I'm just a sucker for a good haunted house story. The window on the door shrinking away is such a cool visual.
Cool top 5, i still think that V/H/S Viral its overhated, but well its your opinion and i respect it.
Here its my top 5 (counting V/H/S/85)
1. Safe haven (V/H/S 2)
2. Bonestrom (V/H/S Viral)
3. 10/31/98 (V/H/S)
4. Storm drain (V/H/S/94)
5. Dreamkill (V/H/S/85)
V/H/S Viral might be the weakest one but its a bit overhated imo
I love this franchise. My order would be 2, 94, vhs, 99, viral. Safe haven is the best segment, I was obsessed with it, showing anyone I could. Excited for 85!
Love the vhs franchise 💛
Love this series! Glad to hear you're a fan of Terror from '94, I definitely feel like that's not near the top of a lot of people's lists.
My favorite shorts are Amateur Night and Slumber Party Alien Abduction. I haven't seen 94 or 99
