at 12:19 good point! I had a 01 ranger and the old filter seal stuck on the engine and I didn't notice, started the truck and oil poured out all over my garage floor. now I always check to make sure the seal is still on my old oil filter after I take the filter off.
Get the all new Ranger if you are a Ranger guy. You will love this truck! Great job Ford . We like our '19 XLT FX4 so much we are picking up a '20 Ranger Lariat FX4 this wk!
Same thing happened to me on my 2011 ranger when doing my own oil change
Check the oil level with the car on level ground to get a true reading.
Thanks. Read your manual, check oil after engine has been sitting after a minimum of 15 minutes it states. Also drain time is 15 minutes but suggested 30 minutes. Takes time to drain. Plus Ford adds 1 additional quart of break in oil, so you lost one quart in 3,000 miles, which is normal. Send a oil sample to Blackstone Laboratories after 3rd oil change. Spend the extra $10 for TBN and TAN analysis. You will be shocked how much oil life you had left in that baby at 3,000 miles. I used to change my oil every 3,000 miles and would change new vehicle oil after approximately 500 miles. Not today, the oils are superior to what was available 20 years ago. If the engine is running perfectly you could stretch oil change interval to 5,000 miles easily and do no harm to the engine. At 5,000 miles you still have 50% TBN left on clock, which neutralizes acid. Today, I use the oil wear monitor and change at 6,500 miles on my 2.7L F-150. My wife just purchased 2021 Ranger, only has 500 miles on clock. Nice video. Peace
At the 11 minute mark he is comparing the weight of a used filter ,saturated with oil ,with that of a new filter with no oil in it .
And I agree with Steven , I gave this a thumbs up . Even though he made several mistakes ,at least he tried to pass along useful info .
If you listen carefully... Used to used.... I have changed 100's of Motorcraft fl910.... The FoMoCo filters that come on the engine from factory feel heavier than a used motorcraft fl910... But i do need to think... Before i say stuff... Lol.. Thanks for watching and for the thumbs up!
I'd guess the factory filter is heavier because of the metal particles that collects from breaking in.
its a lot easier to change the filter if you crank the wheels all the way to the right, also, you only have to remove the push pins from the lowest rear most part of the fender flap. The oil filter from the factory feels heavier as it's inside is saturated with engine oil
Thanks for the video and saving me time hunting for the oil filter. Just picked up a 21 ranger fx4 lariat black with the blackout package
Your welcome! Those black on black ranger look really good! Thanks for watching!
To properly check the oil level, you should have waited at least 5 minutes after the engine has been stopped before checking the oil level. Also, prior to prying off the wheel opening molding rivets, you should have used a screw driver to unscrew the plastic screw unless you don't want to reuse them. Those rivets cost about $4 each.
Where do you find replacements???
@@daveparsons149 I think you can get the exact replacements at the Ford Dealer Parts Dept., or perhaps on Amazon, made in China or somewhere like that too..
Yeah, if you just gently unscrew the Philips head part it will pull out easily by hand. They'll actually almost fall out.
You can still reuse them. They're plastic. They can take some punishment.
Thank you so much man!. Very helpful video.
Thanks for watching
Love that blue color -of the truck
Thanks! It was the color I had to have! Thanks for watching!
Nice video! Love my -'19 Ranger XLT FX4 crew cab. Had it 18mos /15k mis & it's been flawless. Incredible powertrain. Sporty , smooth ride. Suspension & ride/handling far superior to Tacoma. Did my 1st oil change @900mis. Use Penn Ultra Platinum 5w30 oil / Motorcraft filters only .
Thanks for watch!
Ultra plat penn is a waste of money.. Take it from a guy who works for shell lol
That's one beautiful color truck.... I just picked up 2020 magnetic metal color but that blue on black is sick.
Thank you! I almost picked a magnetic ranger with the black out package too. But i had to have blue! Thanks for watching!
Great informative video... Do you have a part number or link for replacing the panel trim screws? Cheers!!!
Thanks, helped me out.
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
bro... you stole my profile picture
PSA if you're doing the first oil change on a brand new car... That filter will 99% of the time be both dry gasketted, and way over tightened. Don't do that when you put the new filter on. Always lube the new gasket, and just give it a good tighten. When the car runs for 3k or however many miles, it will get a lot tighter. You don't want to have to shove a screwdriver through it to get it off...
TY. Did my second oil change based upon this video. This time, I heard the oil hitting the inside of the empty engine, like filling a bucket. That was weird.
Longer drain time?
Yep. Drained until it stopped dripping. @@TheWiscoGuyz
Good job, thanks
Thanks for watching!
Before checking the dip stick should be fully seated when adding oil?
Sorry but I’d check for leaks Lol sorry buddy but that was vary vary great information thanks bud. My 2019 is over a year old with 5500 km on it. I’m Canadian 👍🏻
Yes
Ford engineering at its best...
great Video, thank you for posting!!
Just an FYI for you. That's not a top tier filter, or oil for that matter. (And I'm a Ford guy lol)
Thanks for watching! What do you use for oil and filters?
@@TheWiscoGuyz I've been using both Amsoil oil and filters for a long long time. It's 100% Synthetic, not a blend, or partial Synthetic.
Car manufacturers don't own oil refineries or make filters. They contract it out to the highest bidder.
You can learn a lot from this guys mistakes! That’s why I thumbed up the video.
You can only learn by knowing what your mistakes are. Thanks for the thumbs up and thanks for watching!
I have a 2019 ranger. Instead of draining the oil, I use a suction system that works off my air compressor You put the hose down the oil check tube start your air compressor and wait until all the oil is in the container. Amazon sells them.
Thats crazy... I have heard of oil change shop using them to change oil. Do you have a link?
Nice. Just always change that oil filter & use Motorcraft only . Enjoy. These are best midsize trucks out there by far.
Did you check your oil level after you put it up on the ramps? Shouldn't it be level to get a accurate reading? I really do think this is helpful for me. Thank you!
I did and it was a mistake. Definitely check your oil level on level ground.
Would it be better to check the oil level when the truck is on level ground, instead of the front end up on the ramps?
Yes i would... I didn't show it going off the ramps. But i did check it on level ground
What was the fork you used to remove the plastic push pins on the wheel well cover?

Do you notice a fuel smell in your oil? It is well documented that some 2019+ Ford Ranger have issues with Fuel leaking in the engine. When you removed the dip stick, it looked like it is full. You didn't find that odd?
Last time I changed oil at 10k I smelled a hint gas... But it was -40 degrees for 2 weeks before that day I changed it. So idk, I will keep an eye on it.
Any objections to Quaker or valvoline full synthetic? Noticed every thing is motorcraft or does that void warrenty?
I don't have any. You can always check your owners manual and see what that says. I use motorcraft cause I work at a ford dealer. But as long as your using the correct oil and filter should be fine.
I recommend removing the skid plate to drain and getting a tool to turn that oil filter. It'll save you so much time and frustration. With the right tool and method it's not that hard.
Looks like a job for Jiffy lube!!! Wonder if they charge extra for Ranger off road trucks???
Lol probably!
I’m at 8500 I’m just now getting mine done. Whoops. I’m really sad about it TBH but it’s my fault. Hope it doesn’t cause a bunch of problems 😔
I know this video is 2 years old but I just got a new '22 Ranger xlt. With a 10sp transmission, it sure does shift alot. ALOT. Like its constantly shifting, maybe more so for me since I live in the mountains. Any word on these transmissions having problems or failing often? I dont know what would have been wrong with just using a normal 5 or 6 speed trans in these things. Other than the busy trans, I like the truck.
I haven't heard of any 10 speeds failing. I do work for A Ford dealer. Never seen one out on any of the models they put them in. Yes they are busy transmission. After a while if driving it will learn more about your driving habits and adjust for that.
@@TheWiscoGuyz Thanks for the reply man. With 2300 miles, it has calmed down a bit already. Since you work for Ford, I can ask you about this windshield recall. Is that something the dealer will do or will they just call in Safelight to do it? (there's a recall for the windshield adhesive but I'm hesitant to get it done since everything is fine with my windshield.)
@@Justin-hz8bh so it's a joint effort between the ford bodyshop and the glass company
Once the glass company cuts the glass out the shop needs to prep the surface on the windshield frame opening and then put primer in that area and then the glass company reseals the windshield into the windshield opening frame to reseal. The recall is for some builds with windshields that may come loose because of poor adhesion. Actually just did one yesterday on a Ranger.
I tried using 3,000 lb (1.5 ton) rated rhino ramps last week, they slipped all over the place cause my truck is too heavy for them... so I bought 3 ton hydraulic jack stands. Also, you seemed to have a buddy telling you how far to go on those rhino ramps.. no real way to know if you've gone far enough without some guy watching.. really annoys me about the ramp things. :/
Edit: 4:00 15 mm bolts underneath for the guard (for FX models) and oil drain plug? :O
Side guards use screws, you twist it counter clockwise and they pop off super easy o.o I wonder if a stubby or long handle is better.. going to find out soon! :D
Noticed those brake lines are listed on rockauto as "high quality" EDPM rubber brake hoses with "heavy duty fabric", beyond doubt, why wouldn't they stick with tried and true stainless steel hoses .. beyond me.
Thats sucks about the ramps. I did have someone guiding me up the ramps. Thanks for watching!
Did you put those Hood shocks on, or did your vehicle come with them?
Came factory
@@TheWiscoGuyz Is there a part number on them? my 2023 doesn’t have them.
Imagine the quick oil change places having to take off your trim every time ahh no thana
Probably just get upset when they see one coming in lol
@@TheWiscoGuyz I wouldn't trust them taking off the fender liners
Am I wrong or did he not need to remove those skid plates underneath?
No, you need to slide out the skid plate to get better access to the drain plug And so the oil will drain down and not all over the skid plate underneath making a huge mess to clean up off the inside of the skid plate, which you will now have to remove, to clean up all the oil that fell inside it... Think about it..
I got faked out with oil filter drain trough too.
TIP: press accelerator pedal to the floor and crank it for 15 sec. twice and it will not start but it will fill the filter with oil. That protects the turbo from damage and the rest of the engine because you aren't starting it with a dry filter.
😂😂 Wtf lmao
AHAHHAHAHAHHA NOT
Or how about putting oil into the filter to the top, let it soak into the media and it will be almost empty, then add more oil, say, halfway, let it soak into the media, and then install the filter??? Do it all the time, never an issue with a dry start..
@@frandanco6289 I've always done that too. Never start the engine with a dry filter. It's just common sense.
Hello, just got my new Ranger. Is 1,000 miles to early to do first/break in oil change? I was going to first change at 1,000 then every 5,000 miles after that. Very helpful video, tks.
I think 1000 miles is a good time to change it. No harm in having clean oil!
Not to early. Ford says the break in period is around 1k for the ranger.
Also I would go by the oil life monitor. The oil life monitor in these new Ford's base the oil life on driving conditions, so its pretty accurate
@@alextran8188 Never go by a computer to tell you when to change your oil..
Look at mileage, check the level a lot, look at the color of it, smell it to make sure it doesn't have gas in it...No stupid computer is ever going to be able to do that.
You're better off using the synthetic obviously because it will last you longer between oil changes. How many miles between changes with the synthetic?
The manual says 10000
@@trevorshires lol that's crazy. I doubt there are many people who take that seriously and put it into practice. It's not advisable IMO.
Why does the Ranger's don't come with a Engine Cover ? I have a 2019 Ford ranger Fx4 off road . You can buy one on Amazon under $ 60 ..Very Strange that it does not come one ...I bet you didn't notice it ...
They are standard on the Ranger Lariat models. They do not have them on the XL or the XLT models...
No longer standard on the 23 Lariat Models.
Can the skid plates on the bottom fit on a 2wd frame?
You want them added ?
@@Aceinfinity-le8zc yes I still off-road with my 2wd. I have a rear locking diff which helps but obviously isn’t as good as a fwd but it’s all I got to work with. Just want some protection for my undercarriage. Was just curious if the skid plates would just bolt straight on
What is the torque spec for the oil drain plug?
20 ft lbs
I'm either going to buy a ranger or the bronco. Kinda getting tired of my 2019 tacoma. I love ford's. Also the tacoma uses 0w20 and that seems thin for high miles I don't trust it.
Ranger or bronco would be a good choice! Seems a few taco owners jumping ship.... But see more of them getting Ram 1500s over anything else.
I jumped ship an love my '19 Ranger XLT FX4 crew cab! Ranger is superior in powertrain /suspension & handling . also I think build quality of the Ford is better . Feels more solid . After breakin you must run full synthetic 5w30 for the turbo Ecoboost engine.
Wow, THIS is a Dad’s car according to my daughter
If it is.... It's a cool Dad car!
Does doing it yourself affect your warranty? Especially so early in your ownership?
I dont think so as long as you prove you change your oil. Helps to keep your receipts and keep a log book as well too.
TheWiscoGuyz Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Uggggg. How many oil changes are those plastic pins going to last?
Depends on how aggressive you are with them...could last forever could last 1 time
Where is the pcv value on these??
How many kilometers can you drive before changing your oil , 2019 ford ranger turbo charged ?
I would recomend about 8000 kilometers.

Such a great truck and the Stupidest Oil Filter Design Ford👏👏
It sure is!
@@TheWiscoGuyz you know something, I may have to take my words/comment back after doing my 1st oil change last week, I found it super simple after all the horrible comments I've heard online.. simply let the oil drip down spout/troth and just clean spout/troth real good when done.. 👍
Lemme get one of them shirts 😂
its the only one...got to get a second run going
A lot easier to do with the wheel off. You should be rotating your tires every oil change, anyways.
hows your ranger so far? any complaints?
Nothing really... 6ft bed would be nice. But thats being nit picky. The best vehicle I have ever owned so far!
@@TheWiscoGuyz thanks brother! i wanna get one , one day down the road!

Holy! 8k thats a bit of weight!
The service manual says 20 lb-ft on the oil drain plug. That's a bit more specific than "make sure it's on there tight"!
CAN YOU GET ME THE TORQUE SPECKS FOR THE WHEEL LUG NUTS?
@@tomsimmonds9598 3 ugga's
@@tomsimmonds9598 standard torque spec for lug nuts are somewhere between 50 ft lb's and 55 ft lbs. I have a toyota fj cruiser and the spec is 52 ft lbs, which I think is safe for any truck.
I find that if you use a torque wrench and if it's not 100 percent dialed in, you can really mess things up. I snapped a bolt on housing for my mass airflow sensor because I followed the torque specs. I never followed them again since that time because you never know the accuracy of your torque wrench and if it is off even 5 percent , you're kind of fucked. So on the sensitive parts which you REALLY can't afford to strip, I'd go by FEEL rather than specs. Just my personal preference after 41 years of doing my own oil changes. Those who know the "feel" will beat any torque wrench to hell. I only use the torque wrenches on lug nuts and "rough" things like that and even then I back off a few ft lbs, never had a problem.
Sometimes you got to go with what you feel... Lol
First change is supposed to be at 3K? I've seen 1.5K and my sales rep said 5K.
5k is what we recommend at the ford dealership I work at.... But I did it at 3k just to get the "break in" out.. gained 4 mpg after the first oil change. Now I'm doing 5k mile changes.

“FoMoCo” 😂 (Fo Mo Co) aka ford motor company bud.. also filter is heavier cause of the oil saturated filter
Working for Ford for the last 10+ years... Changing oil on fords and chryslers 3 of 10 years at the dealership I work at.. apples to apples a used FoMoCo filter feels heavier then a used motorcraft filter.
I too believe the 1st oil filter from factory has a *thicker filter media* for best break- in etc as the guy in video states. I've worked for Ford Motor 26yrs @ plant level as direct Ford emoloyee. Looks to be for the 3.2L Ford
powerstroke desiel. Which is not available in the U.S in the Ranger. We here have the 2.3L ecoboost turbo 4 cylinder. Similar to the Ford Explorer and Ford Mustang.
That was my thought to, but it was making me hesitant to do an oil change myself until I knew. The Ranger has an engine similar to the Mustang EcoBoost and I hadn't seen anything like that about the Mustang so I feel better about it. Thanks for commenting.
SierraVistaGathering I have a jeep with 267,000 miles, at 224,000 jeep replaced my engine under lifetime warranty, I feel the only reason was because I had a “paper trail”of dealership oil changes. Just something to consider.
I work at jiffy lube, the filter is a bitch to get at and slows our opperation down, and eventually those plastic tabs will break.
The shop i used to work at refuses to do em, they're all too old to get at the filter lol
The lube techs at the ford dealership I work for are always asking for clips from us in the body shop. Lol they hate them too.
That's a pretty dumb design for something you have to do so often.
@@TheWiscoGuyz I can’t believe Ford used those tabs, which break easy, for something that requires regular access. Do you know of a 3rd party alternative to those so I don’t pay $8 or whatever each?
Does anyone else think its BS that you have to take the driver front tire off and put 6.2 quarts of oil in a 4 cyl. engine
How do you check the damn oil level when it's up on the ramps?🤔
Mistakes where made.... Lol
If the fucking filter STILL right above the starter?? Are they wanting people to light their trucks on fire?
OMG YOU DON'T HAVE A FUNNEL??. SO IS THE OIL FILTER ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OR THE PASSENGER SIDE??
I didn't have a clean one so i did the old Jimmy Oaks challenge. The oil filter is on the Driver side.
@@TheWiscoGuyz NOT ON MY 2019, IT'S ON THE PASSENGER SIDE..WEIRD???
What engine do you have?
Buy a funnel ;)
That engine was never meant to be fitted to the ranger
True... But it works.
TheWiscoGuyz Great choice but Ford to use this engine in this truck. Only thing imo they should have done differently is found a way to put the filter on top. With a tune in this truck 80-90 more hp and ft lbs of torque is easily achievable. Transmission will handle it will 0 issues.
It is a really good engine! I came from Focus ST's and I was pretty familiar with the ecoboost inline 4 engines.... Plus 28 mgs on the Hwy is nice too 😆
@@TheWiscoGuyz i want the ranger. but im letting the trolls talk crap about the engine. saying its gonna blow up before 100k miles. Think she'll last at least 150k?
I work at a Ford/Chrysler dealer here in northern Wisconsin and from what I see from the 4 cylinder ecoboost engine they are pretty reliable. From the 1.5L to the 2.3L ecoboost 4 cylinders they seem to not have to many problems. The Ford fusion is one of the most reliable vehicle out there with the ecoboost engines. I think it mostly depends on how you take care of the vehicle too. Being a turbo engine I would change oil at 5000 mile mark. But time will tell to see what the 2.3 liter ecoboost will do. I plan i keeping mine for the next 10 years.. And in that time i should have around 150k to 200k on it. But if the ranger comes out with a 2.7L v6 ecoboost..... I might trade up into that... Lol
Why is this process such a mess compared to the Tacoma? It looks like a cakewalk on the Taco and even if you did it on the Ford 100% correctly it looks like it'd be a pain in the ass, I see getting oil all over your suspension stuff as it drips as you're removing the filter from the wheelwell. Arrrgh. My 2005 Focus is easier to change than this. Come on Ford...
Its not that bad... I have done way worse.
I had a 91 Toyota Pickup and had to remove a cover on the inner fender to get to the filter. Also with the oversized tires I put on I then had to remove the wheel. These are easy compared to some other vehicles.
Don't ever trust Ford oil filter drain troughs HAHAHA. They have betrayed me so many times. I wish i could stand face to face with those engineers and rub their nose in that oil.
😂
wtf was ford thinking putting the filter there
Probably thinking this engine wouldn't be in a rear wheel drive layout. Lol
@@TheWiscoGuyz Ford uses that engine in a east west configuration also, that's why the oil filter is where it is.
It is incredibly stupid. I have had the last two generation Subarus, which have the oil filter directly on top of the engine. That is how it should be. I'll be taking my Ranger to Ford for oil changes.
They were thinking about the extra money coming into their Ford Dealer service departments when DIYers decide this is a pain in the ass.
Why are you changing your oil at less than 3k miles? The range has an oil life monitor equipped on it. Ford even say the 2019 Oli life is up to 1 year or 10k miles.
Mostly to get the break in oil out. Gained 5 mpgs average after i changed oil. Plus i only put on 6-8k mile a year on. I might switch to 5k oil changes though, we will see though.
never use full synthetic on diesel engine
bastard clips to get to the oil filter? hard fucking pass on that one ford. thanks for making this video.
Wow, 5 little clips are too hard for your little dainty girly hands ??? Too bad...
ALSO, FORD DOESN'T INSIST ON USING SYNTHETIC OIL
They don't. But it helps....
Ford will give you the cheap way to keep the perceived cost of ownership down. Truth is this is a very high tech power train. Synthetic oil is better a better lubricant than conventional oil. Flows better, keeps engine cooler. Cheap insurance over the long term if you want to go way beyond the warranty period.
Yes they clearly do. In the owners manual of any Ranger it recommends using oil that meets Ford Spec: WSS-M2C946-B1. The dealerships and some shops around me (including the shop I work at) don’t stock or carry conventional oil anymore. Requiring, or recommending synthetic (or synthetic blend) oil is why oil change intervals have increased to 7500-15000 miles for newer cars in recent years. Yeah sure, you can try to go that far on “regular” oil but you might be needing a new engine 😂 🤦🏼♂️ 👍🏻 👨🏼🔧
Personally, I wouldn’t put anything but a high-quality synthetic in a Turbo engine (all of the new rangers are Turbocharged).
Sorry, but Aaron is wrong! It's a TOTAL pain in the butt. I love my 2019 Ranger in EVERY way except the fuel economy auto shutoff and changing the oil. I've changed my own oil for 28 years on Chevy, Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Jeep and now Ford. This is the worst oil change setup I've ever come across! Why did I have to go down the CZcams rabbit hole just to find out where the filter is located AND how to access it? WTF Ford? Thanks WiscoGuyz!
Thanks for watching!
3000 MILES AND HE'S ALREADY CHANGING THE OIL?? WHY???
Gotta get that break in oil out.
@@TheWiscoGuyz OH? HOW COME??
