Former ford tech here. Beautiful truck. I have a 2019. DO NOT GO 10K MILES ON A OIL CHANGE. It is a Ecoboost engine (turbocharged). The oil gets very very dirty. I recommend 5 k. The turbo does not like 10k oil changes. I know Ford recommends it. But it's just a selling point "oh you can go 10k miles before a oil change. Less maintenance". It's a selling tactic. Same with "sealed transmissions". And you access the oil filter through driver wheel well. Don't need to take wheel off. Just turn it all the way to the right
@@MicahMartinDIY you have to unbolt the pan. The filter has two different length screws don't get them mixed up. And the gasket is reusable and has lock tabs to hold it in place while reinstalling the pan. And your supposed to get it to 215 degrees to check the level. After a filter change add 5 qts. This will allow you to start it and drive it. It takes a while to get to operating temp. But whichever full indicator you have(there's 3 different kinds of dipsticks) put the fluid just below the full line. Then add accordingly.
@@BeardedFordTech do you recommend changing all fluids ( oil, Diff, trans, transfer case after break in? I've seen a lot of people mentioning that due to a coating on the band new gears and what not. Curious what a technician says about that.
@@NorthernRailsTrainsInTheNorth no don't change the diff and tanser and transmission. Not until 30-45k miles. Oil I recommend every 5k miles. Don't go the 10k it recommends. It's a boosted engine and they get dirty. There is no break in oil. It's already broke in from the factory.
Thanks. Getting ready to do my first oil change on my 21 ranger xlt sport. I love this truck. I’m doing the first Chan get at 2000 miles then I’m going to change it every 4K or so. I know it says it can go 7500 but I need this truck to last 15 years. With the turbo I’ll be changing way more often
You access the oil filter through the driver's side (front) wheel well (you do not need to remove the wheel). There is a flexible (I think rubber) guard that is held on with four fasteners. Pull the fasteners, fold the flap back and you have direct access to the oil filter. Looks like what you did worked well too. I think Ford recommends spraying out the catch tray with cleaner afterwards.
Just gave my newly acquired 2020 ranger fx4 a change yesterday…took about an hour by the time I pulled the skid plate, drained, pulled rubber flap in wheel well an pulled filter and then filled and reassembled. Easy peasy…no issues. 6qts Mobil 1 full synthetic, K&N filter.
Have '19 Ranger XLT FX4 crew cab. 19mos / 16mis. Flawless so far . Truck drives wonderful an the 2.3L Ecoboost is a blast w/good MPGs. All the new midsize brand trucks are good but all new Ranger is by far best in class. Ranger takes 6.2qts w/new filter! It's easy to remove oil filter NO WHEEL TURNING NEEDED. SN+ full synthetic oil only.
I did. I know that cringy, but these new trucks are designed to go longer. My next new vehicle I will probably change it at 500-1000 though. I didn't see any glitter though!
@@MicahMartinDIY keep in mind these long service intervals are designed for the customers convenience not for the longevity of the vehicles. The manufacturers are in the business of selling parts and vehicles. 10 k miles on a turbo engine is mechanical suicide.
Check out a fumoto valve. Installed one on both of my cars and zero mess (seriously) I drain it into an old laundry detergent bottle as a holder then the old oil into the 5qt jug after I empty it into the car.
First off who starts an oil change on a new vehicle without doing any research? Look at your owners manual or on CZcams..also you put in the wrong viscosity for your new Ranger..the 2.3 calls for a viscosity of 5/30 not the 5/20 you put in it. At least you did the service yourself..but damn do some research first.
Thanks Aldo. My channel is for education, sometimes I do it right the first time, sometimes I mess it up. When I do, I don't hide it. If you watch the whole video, you will see that I realized my mistake and went back and corrected it by draining the oil again and refilling it with the correct viscosity.
@MicahMartinDIY ..yes you did sir! I posted before the end of the video. But you did correct the viscosity issue..not that it would have become an issue. But you're like me it would have buged me. At least you did your best and you did your own service! I'm to old and fat nowadays but back in the day I would do all of my family's recommended services for them. Keep up the great content. You have a great channel good luck.
And yet he changed the oil at 9K miles and went by the Intelligent Oil Life Sensor, which most non mechanical type owners would assume is okay when in actuality, the frequency needs to be closer to very 5k miles according to all the techs here.
I am not a fan of where the oil filter is placed on the ranger. I love my ranger i just wish they would put it in a better place. Also with the fasteners your gonna need to buy lots of them because they do not like to be reused
Not a bad video. I'd invest in a oil catch can, I have a mishimoto oil catch on mine. The amount of fluid it accumulates is surprising. I have a 2019 with 3,400 miles, filled the can twice already.
I never go by the oil life %, change it every 5,000 . I had 2015 fusion 1.5 ecoboost . Had over 309,000 on it before wreck totaled it. Never burned or lost oil. Ran like a top. I used Mobil1 5w 20 full synthetic and started Rislone additive at 30,000 miles.
If you're talking about the flimsy cover, that is more for aerodynamics and to keep road debris and mud out. I took mine off and haven't reinstalled it. If you are talking about an actual skid plate, I do not have that option on mine.
The motorcraft oil is not good. I used it the first few times. Change it at 5000 miles cause it wii be cooked. Mobil 1 looks pretty good after 5000 but I never go much longer.
300hp on premium fuel & most tq in class. Every review had rated it best powertrain in class it's mated to super smooth 10spd transmission/same unit from F150.

Synthetic blend is in my manual.
Realistically all full synthetic is still only a blend. You need to step up to amsoil fluid to be 100 %.
Now, they are selling SP rated oil, so get that....
Yap, always check the oil cap label and ford ranger takes 6.2 ltr. Of oil
Thanks bro! I'm glad that others can learn from my mistakes at least!
6.2 quarts, not liters.
6.2 gts

Could you remove that gutter thing under the oil filter for better access?
I'm sure you could, but I like it there to catch the drips.
NO.. It is there purposely to do direct the oil coming out away and you just have to have your pan there ready to catch it...
