- Hey everyone, welcome back. I have another video on my 2020 Ford Ranger Lariat. In todays video I'm showing you how to change your oil in your 2019 + Ford Ranger. Its an easy job and only takes a few minutes to complete and you DO NOT have to remove the wheel to do it!
Im changing out my oil to AMSOIL SAE 5W-30 Signature Series Oil. This special formulated oil allows for 25000 mile, or One year oil change intervals. Of course you can use these steps to change to whatever your favorite oil brand might be. Hope it helps!

You dont have to prefill the filter. Ford has a primer feature. Hold the brake a gas all the way down and hit the ignition and it will crank for like 10 seconds wothout starting. This primes the filter. Then you can start with oil pressure
Thanks. Great detail and straight to the point. Luv the extra tips. Speaking from knowledge and 35yrs of DIY auto care/maintenance… this is the best 2019-2021 Ford Ranger oil change vid. 👍
I took my ranger to get the oil changed and they told me they wouldn't do it because they had to remove the tire and panels. Thanks for sharing this so I know that they're full of it and now I can do it myself!
Buy an FUMOTO valve and you won’t have to worry about a wrench for the drain plug or skid plat removal. You will need the small adapter which they sell. Then add 6” of tubing and done. No more skid plate removal or drain plug removal. Just flip a switch.
This is true. I always forget to order Fumoto valves. I’m coming up on an oil change soon for my old Ranger so might as well order two. Thanks
How much is a fumoto valve I'd like to get one for mine
@@paulpeters5199 like $30. But you will need to get the adapter/spacer also. The valve needs to be spaced away from the drain pan by 1/2”. Just go to the website and select your vehicle.
Thank you I'm ready for an oil change and now will be the time to do that thanks again for the help
@@jdc1978 Did you use the long nipple version to attach the tubing?
Just finished changing my oil. I laid under the truck for 15 minutes looking for the damn oil filter. At one point I thought maybe they didn't use one. Got the manual out and it said it had one so I came to CZcams to find it. Crazy to have to go through the wheel well but it was actually really easy.
That is typical of Ford. They attempt to make the car serviceable. How many car companies would think of that drain channel too? Not many if any.
I remember a high school buddy in the early 80's had a Chevy Monza. He had to PULL THE ENGINE, to change spark plugs.
Thanks for the step by step oil change it helps. I got a 2021 Ranger.
Thank you.
My 2020 Ranger’s warranty expires next month so I expect to be doing some DIY services now.
Your video is very clear and helpful.
Good job.
Right on bro! Helped me with changing oil on my 19 ranger the first time 👌🏻
This is a good video. I feel confident I can change my own oil. I will try it out this weekend. Thanks!
I have the same truck but 2021 model. Lift kit and oversized tires as well. Love the performance and style!!!
Thanks for ur vids. Learned a lot. Ordered a 2022 so doing my due diligence.
Ordered a 2022 ranger tremor hoping they start buld soon
Thanks for showing us how to do this. Great video!
Thanks, Love my truck, came from a Jeep which I Loved but this Ranger is GREAT
Love my '19 Ranger XLT FX4 . 18mos/14k mis. Used only SN+ full synthetic 5w30 motor oil. Motorcraft oil filters highly recommended! Phenomenal powertrainn & suspension.
It is up to SP level for the oil now... :)
17k miles on my 2021 ranger, already got a rebuilt trans, and the trans STILL kicks, and refuses to shift properly sometimes. 5 recalls and unevenly wearing tires. still love the truck!
Removing the skid plate was some good information. Thanks
Cool truck! Oil
Life Meter!😆🤙
I’m a 29 year old girl and your video showed me everything I needed to change the oil for my dad in his ranger. Thank you so much for making this!
5,000 miles MAX! Not 1 more. That engine and turbo will be toast after 10,000. 25,000 is insane. I also run Amsoil signature series and a wicks filter. But I change it every 5000 miles. I still enjoyed your video and it does help people maintain their vehicle but 5000 miles is all you should go between oil changes no matter what oil and filter you are using.
I do the same as u. Amsoil evey 5k. 100k miles on a 21 ranger, no issues. 👍 better safe than sorry!
Absolutely oil changes are a must. I don’t quite put 5000 miles on this year so, I’m changing my Amsoil signature series this year at about 3800 miles because I have a year on the oil. Oil is cheap versus destroying the engine. I got each qt for about $11.80 from our local Amsoil dealer. The wicks XP filters can be kind of hard to find. I found that O’Reillys has them. That’s great to hear you have gone a 100,000 miles. It should easily go another 100,000 miles if it’s taken care of the same way.
You actually DON'T need an oil filter wrench or pliers to remove the filter?? If that's true, I gotta confess, that's UNusual!!
Great video thanks.
You mentioned you have 33s on your truck. what offset wheels do you have to fit that? I also have a 2 1/2 inch leveling lift
Great video, does the Amsoil bottle comes with a papel seal on top?
Thank you for your channel. I just bought a 2020 XL. I’m concerned about the gas in oil. Keep us posted.
Don't be concerned! Ford's TGDI (Ecoboost) engine design has been the best of these designs of any automaker. Use only SN+ rated full synthetic motor oil & Motorcraft filters! Do the 1st break- in change by 1500mis! Allow 1000mis easy driving. No revving / LONG IDLING . Enjoy ur new Ranger! Best truck in the class.
@@davidklimmek3192 love my Ranger FX4
@@Oakleyworld Me as well. Fantastic trucks! Ford over- engineered the Ranger to last long & outperform all others. Key is good reg maintenance!
Use premium fuel 91-93 octane if you want 300hp & engine to run cleanest. Reg 87 octane is bad for turbocharged DI motors.
@@davidklimmek3192 yes only premium always, i try telling people.
I Have a 2019 ford ranger lariat , how far can you between oil changes
Thanks
This is the first vehicle I've ever owned that when you look in the owners manual to reference an oil change, and it simply says, "Take it to your authorized Ford service center." What have we become? Thanks for the video!
I saw this too and was disappointed. Super lame of Ford.
i have a 2wd ranger ='( but its definitely looks bad ass!
Thank you. I was going to take my truck to the dealer but i don't trust it anymore. I tather do it my self.
I run Amsoil oil & filter as well, for the full 25 000 miles. I change the filter about halfway through the t oil life though.
I would never run oil for 25k miles... :)
@@frandanco6289 It's hard to comprehend, I know. I was born in 1970, and things have changed since my father thought me about motor oil in 1984. Nothing I was taught about as a young man, about vehicle in general, applies any more.
would like to add tailgate light bar on my 2019 lariat ranger but hear its not easy because of blis system...any one done it yet?
Very good demonstration. I’ll be doing mine after my next 5000 miles. Thanks
Where do you buy your wheel well liner? Mine is cracked in the middle.
5’ 3” with short arms. Just get an extension and oil filter wrench and good to go.
50k miles 2019 ford ranger xlt. Changed the oil every 3k miles. I drove as this is a mustang and the engine runs like new. I used the blend but now thinking going full synthetic since it is cheaper than the blend 😂
Have you done an oil analysis yet? I've been looking at rangers as a possible daily instead of a sedan. Any issus/problems about or with your ranger? Have you towed with it or primarily overland?
Not yet. I have a little over 13000 miles. I changed out w/ Amsoil XL around the 2000mile mark. I’ll do a black stone test when I change the oil again. (Or during oil filter change)
@@HarlesGarage i use their 5w30 signature series. On my daily driver.
@@ceescorner Nice! yeah the truck is primarily overland. If I keep going on trips like I expect to do I'll def hit 25K miles in one year.
@@HarlesGarage hows tour truck holding up? I just picked one up for that very reason.
You may need a oil filter wrench to get the filter off. I had all my oil changes done at the dealer till my "Free oil changes" ran out. My first oil change the filter would not move till I got a wrench.
Man I too have the same problem. The smell is so bad I could smell it when I am at idol at a light stop sign. The smell is also inside my cab even when I get out of my truck and turn it off and im walking away from like 5' away or more I could still smell it. I have a jlt catch can and I thought maybe that's the reason too but I don't see how or why that would cause it. I guess I have to take mine to the dealership also. This sucks, new truck!
Did your lift void warranty and what kit did u use
great design ford make it hard to get to the oil filter
I got the a 2020 magnetic grey color xlt with sport package! 2wd though i dont go offroading😂😂
🤝🏾
Same here except 2021. Same color same 2 wd. I love this truck!
My god, are you a super man? How can you loosen the stock oil filter with your bare hand. My god!!!
Super Tony -- He probably pre-loosened it before the video...
dip stick should be fully seated when adding oil before checking?
It doesnt matter if the dipstick is in or not... You are supposed to add the oil put the cap on, make sure the dipstick is inserted and all the way down, start the truck, check for leaks, shut it off, wait a few minutes, pull the dipstick, wipe it, re-insert it, pull it out, check the level...New, my '22 Lariat came with the oil level just below the top hole on the stick and it is still there with around 1,200 miles...I am going to change it and filter now, because I know that BMW changes their M cars - all their fluids at 1,200 miles for a reason... They used to do it to ALL the Bimmers they sold, but can you imagine how much that cost???? They eventually just reserved that for their "M" performance vehicles...
Thought it had to be done in ten minutes? And other videos suggest changing the filter before draining the oil.
I refuse to drive more than 5,000 miles without changing my oil haha.
Amsoil makes a oe oil for that reason.
Nothing wrong with this I used to do the same in my vehicles that engine ran beautiful you take care of your vehicle it will take care of you.
did you get that blue towel from obsessed garage? lol
I’m about to use Amsoil for the first time despite having listened it is too expensive. Here’s what I’ve calculated for my 2021 Tacoma Pro. It takes 6.2 quarts. If I use the cheapest synthetic and filter it will cost me 31.41 per change. If I do this every 3k miles it will cost me $1,046 over 100k miles. If I use the Signature Series AND the Amsoil filter it will cost me $77.92 per change. If I do this every 5,000 miles it will cost me $1,558 over 100k miles- ONLY $513 more. If I drive 10k miles a year the Amsoil will cost me $51 more per year.
I think I can handle $51 more a year EVEN IF Amsoil isn’t any better. If it is- the $51 extra each year is a bargain because it likely has saved me more than the extra $513 over the 10 year period. Obviously if I changed the interval to 15,000 miles it buys its way in BUT I wanted to show the most conservative approach. I hope this helps put things in to perspective.
you can easily take the cheapest synthetic to 5k miles
12:06 No hood struts, no engine cover on my 2023 XLT.
I'm trying to change the oil/filter on a 2021 Ford Ranger Lariat for the first time at around 5,000 miles. The oil filter seems immovable given the tightness and awkward angle of my arm/hand over the tire and through the wheel-well. Note that there is not a lift-kit on the truck. The space doesn't seem to be big enough for an oil wrench. Does anyone have suggestions to remove this filter?
go to aprox. 4:28 in this video; czcams.com/video/IImTDssjFlg/video.html
He has a cool looking socket adapter.
lol@pre fill oil filter. ever heard of flood mode?
Hell no! 5k mis !
Remember to get all the fuel out of your oil WTG ford ;)
Your doing all that work for nothing. You don't need to pull the skid plate. You just need a 15mm gear wrench. A funnel like one man said would keep you from spilling the old oil while draining. You don't have to prefill your new oil filter either. That's just done on diesels because the filters are too big.
Would be nice if changing your own oil saved you a few bucks but I literally spend more just on oil and filters than paying the mechanic $50 to do it. I found a sale and getting only 6 quarts I spent $51.72 sometimes I get coupons for $35 change from the mechanic down the street.
You could have just used a funnel under the drain plug to save a lot of work taking off the skid plate 😅
25k miles of use on naturally aspirated engines. 15k miles on turbo engines.
After watching this I realize my 2021 didnt come with plastic engine cover
Only the lariat models come with it. And it's actually a high density foam. You can order one on eBay for like $100. Reduces engine noise pretty significantly.
You are supposed to remove and replace the oil filter due to the variable oil pump first in order to complete the change fast and not risk the oil pump losing prime. Multiple people and family members learned the hard way with engine replacement. (Doesn’t just affect the Ranger).
That’s an awful place to put the oil filter.
That's a horrible location for an oil filter.
Too much talking
It takes 5.7qts, not 6.2
Andy K - No, it takes 6.2 Quarts.... It's the 2.3L 4-cylinder engine...
