- This video explores why people like anime girls. Specifically, the female characters in the Japanese anime industry. This video answers "Why do people like anime girls?" and "Why do people use anime avatars?". Analysis is given of several reasons behind anime's popularity, especially in Western countries. Some of the animes featured in the video include Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, K-On!, Re:Zero, We Can't Study, Love Lab, Violet Evergarden, and more.

Never in my life would I have ever thought that someone could spend ten minutes discussing the pros of animated Japanese women. The world is truly a strange and interesting place.
We live in strange times
@@Kydino I'm actually aware of these values and their presence in older Western media. In fact, I've gravitated toward that in recent years, rather than toward anime and other such things. I even find it to be the right move, but that's just my opinion. However, I thank you for the recommendation. I'll check this Distributist out, when I can.
And what's best, the things he says in video actually make sense
personally in comparison to this i rather be on a different world altogether different, One with a drastically less flawed species, one with more wonders, and one that is not a mundanely depressing nightmare.
I mean it’s not really animated Japanese woman although I can speak for some Japanese women, but it’s morally just animated exaggerated Japanese women But that’s just my opinion though.
The fact that it's anime that's more morally fulfilling in terms of relationships (portraying people the best way possible) than most media in the west is both embarrassing and both angers and enlightens me.
same goes for Disney
@@r3mii619 Exactly, me too.
Anime Girl is the result of the behavior of modern Japanese women encouraged by the female suffrage after 1945s. It started back in the 80s. We could have had these fictional drawings of women outdoing the 'real women' decades ago but it never needed to happen then. However it does now.
These claims are pretty wild, though. Anime and Japan are a standard for relationships, really? Are people really thinking about this?
Dudes, go outside, meet some real people.
Japan has an abysmal fertility rate and sky-high suic*de rates. Anime characters are all perma-virgins or experience sex through borderline r*pe and accidental gr*ping only. WTF. But god forbid people having _exes_ , right? yuk!
I'm also under the suspicion, some of in not all these studies are biased as heck. They are all centered about "reported satisfaction". Isn't it reasonable to assume people who have no experience with other partners have less to compare with and say "I guess this is fine, I guess this is how it's supposed to be" even while being in rather terrible relationships? Aren't more experienced people more likely to have experienced some really good and some really bad relationships and thus having high standards and thus able to be more critical of any current relationship? Aren't people of more traditional values more invested in ... "reporting" a higher satisfaction for their one and only, god-given spouse even if they are _terrible_ ? _reported_ satisfaction in relationships is not the same as _actual_ quality of relationships.
Basically proves the Communist win.
I have 5 young daughters, and there is something to be said about how anime girls are idealized femininity, especially with personality traits. My oldest is now 13, and she regularly watches slice of life anime. The portrayal of anime girls in this genre is certainly exaggerated, which is the point. No human female can have perfectly symmetrical features or eyes that are almost a quarter of the size of their face. However, my daughter has shown some of the mannerisms and personality traits that anime idealizes. She admonished me for speaking crudely in front of my wife and daughters, and while she was right, I was somewhat surprised. She’s currently quite infatuated with romance, but not sex. My wife showed me drawings she made of this wedding scene (complete with an anime girl that had more than a passing resemblance to her, and a boy that was cleverly hidden behind her - she doesn’t know what her future husband would look like).
I think this is a good thing all around. I’m well aware there is hentai and a lot of people have degenerate feelings towards it. But I think we should celebrate femininity more, it’s gotten a bad rap in the west.
Even in hentai a lot of the unions/pair are, though distorted as they may be, life long unions with both sides being happy with them.
Bro be careful with ntr
I wish your daughters and yourself a long a healthy life and hopefully your daughters stay true to themselves so no guy ruins their wonderful personality traits 🙏

Never has someone so perfectly explained why I a Christian like anime and hate western society. Truly based
I blame the overfocus on masculinity where boys are abused for supporting girly stuff, yet the gender enforcement goes only 1 way with our society not caring about girls being feminine. If we had much more of those cutesy magical girl anime series English Dubbed & insisted the importance of girls watching them maybe we would be better off. Oh & then there are our sports why are the hypermasculine events given such prime treatment in America? While ballet, fencing, gymnastics, & ice skating are nearly impossible to find normally just because they aren't masculine enough for our Western Culture.
Christianity was destroyed by hypocrisy in these parts. You can't claim to be for being virtuous & treating people well when your most avid members support such corruption & evil as their champion. We the people Stateside & Christians were supposed to be better than this. Through Anime we can see much more virtue & actual values. I rejected my own masculinity simply because there is far too much of that poisoning my homeland & all I can do is write of the importance of feminine traits.
@@WaterKirby1994 probably the most based and awesome opinion i've seen in a long time
@@The_Jazziest_Coffee Thanks & it feels like we need to restrain masculinity through something like chivalry. Modern Men would view such honor for women as simping. The Knights in shining armor that girls were supposed to fall in love with are much too feminine for the modern idea of masculinity that exists Stateside.
Civilization thrives on rules not roughnecks & barbarism. Yet our Far Western Culture is at risk of mindless might & brutality being the rule. Many have forgotten the importance of softness & sensitivity. Now we see people attacking our intellectual institutions & arresting doctors for doing their jobs. Kindness is a dying virtue & those who practice it are treated as woke witches these days Stateside. I still use the pen to fight for what I believe in during this age of guns.
@@WaterKirby1994 it's ironic cuz i would actually argue that the 'knight in shining armour' trope was at one point deemed 'too masculine'
crazy and scary stuff we're living through, as the gym that was once meant to be a wholesome idea is now being used as a symbolism for hypermasculinity and the 'sigma grindset' culture
and thank you for touching on the kindness being a dying virtue. tolerance is the most basic form of respect, and yet people are already seeming to lack that in one way or another, so kindness seems to be more of an add-on than a common aspect of life, which is just awfully fucked up.

Saber is honestly a great example of a powerful yet feminine character. She is a woman who was forced to rule as a king both out of obligation and her own sense of duty. Part of her life as a Servant in the modern day living with Shirou is that she is able to live normally as a feminine woman while coming to terms with her decisions while she ruled as king.
I think you don't need to show a woman's strength in a masculine way, e.g. fighting. How about a mother, who's husband went to war, and she has to take care of her children, and the house, alone? I was confused why some people I watched implied anime was inherently right-wing, now it makes a lot of sense. The Japanese clearly still value the things that are good about women while the West rejects those ideals in order to promote a hedonistic equal society and in order to try and maximize or worse, _commercialize_ the short-term pleasure of that hedonism.
Most Japanese women do cheat on their partners but that's not important in this video cause this video talks about anime and anime and real-life Japan are very different.
Incorrect, it's because Japan is a patriarchal and women don't have as much freedom of expression. It's also pretty misogynist and sexist. This aligns with conservative feelings about women. How women are more like objects to please them, than actual people with individuality and independence.

I came here expecting a half-baked answer to the question, but was pleasantly surprised when I found an actual in depth conversation. I am very happy to have found this video and would rate it 10/10.
This video contains so many combined wisdoms regarding love relationships and the way our modern day society thinks about this. I think I'm beginning to understand why I gear towards anime instead of more western shows. In some ways anime is a logical progression of my christian upbringing and explains why I feel I have such a good relationship with my girlfriend. Though the degenerate side of anime is why I am leaning more and more towards living as a christian instead of being an anime fan.
This would also explain why I've sometimes thought some anime music sounded like hypercharged christian music. The music represents themes like passion, the joy of living, striving to aim for higher goals, beauty and elegance, while sounding cheery and upbeat at the same time. The sad thing is that the musical style I'm refering to, is used most (I've found) in virtual novels with pornographical elements. These are games designed to make the player attached to these characters, so no suprise the music is designed to represent unending love. Being upbeat with fast changes ("hypercharged", if you will) to be a fast consumable dopamine rush.
This video really made me think...
here is my take on the subject,i wrote it as an answer to someone else but i hope it complements the points explained in your video;
for me,anime as it is known today started with a struggle of some japanese men to express themselfes in a post war, desperate, souless japan.
after the war the entire foundation of japanese civilization was challenged, and what followed wasnt a cultural revival,or a penetration of western culture like christianity (in part because the west too,was deep into its decomposition process. it still is,today.) but simply materialistic capitalism and modernism.
at the same time, the subbordination to authority and the rigid social norms where strenghened,so many in japan felt crushed without a way to convey their inner world. thats why anime was created.
it isnt a fight against modernism, against japans current situation, nor is it political.
it is like an understanding hug. the rich characthers and scenarios, and the comically yet sincere social interactions found in many shows feels like if the author tore the fake reality apart to reach the viewer in a more sincere, real, human inner reality. anime ideally tries to rescue the soul of japan.
of course this is an ideal. most shows focus on cute girls and stuff, although this too, makes a lot of sense in this context, considering japans problem with hikkikimori and women not seeking relationships. so why did anime became so popular worldwide?
like i said, our civilization is decomposing, and everyone can feel this, even if at an unconscious level. the waifus, the anime tropes, otaku culture, all of this is an attempt to fill in that void with sincerity, honor, memorable and attractive characthers and why not, some ecchi along the way. thats why anime is deeply satisfying, and why i believe it is valuable nowadays.
ofc this comes with some danger. this culture can help you feel better and gain perspective, but at the same time can be like a drug. some people can become so involved in it that they become delusioned with our current situation, and what began as a source of hope ends being an escapist trap as materialistic as the place it originated from.
Well said, that is also my opinion, but for me it troubles me sometimes, it constantly reminds me of my failures in socialising and relationships and some voice inside me(idk if i have ocd but bad and negative thoughts are floating in my head all the time)hurts me by suggesting that im jealous of this stories and its like some never reaching fantasy for me, tho i know that these are just some unwanted negative thoughts that mean nothing and certainly arent true about me but the thoughts just dosent let me enjoy anime as i did in the first days, sometimes my mind even thinks that this is too good almost like something very evil and degenerated exists in the background of its industry and that also troubles my enjoyment of anime which is tripled after finding out about things like incest(in anime)and lolicon
"and why not, some Ecchi along the way"
Yeah, why not
Jokes aside, it's the quantity that can make anime, and basically everything, a problem. In between those things we need to take responsibility for our life, but that's hard and there is so much else one can do instead...
Anime isn't magical, it's one more way to enjoy reality. We had books in the west before anime, so I REALLY have no clue as to why people are so surprised to learn anime is going places.
But if there's one correction I want to make, it's that it's not a matter of expressing anything. One can make a drawing or write something to themselves for themselves if it's just about expressing. Expression stops exactly when you stop producing, not when you share it.
Some people wanted things to be one way but reality disagrees. Drawing or writing helps a lot, but most people don't know that because they don't do it. I mean, if anyone is reading this, when you had trouble, have you ever tried working through it by writing down your reasoning for why it's that way? Or have you ever tried giving form to it with a drawing? Of course not, drawing your thoughts is considered cringy and writing it pretentious unless you're famous. But it works. And it turns out many people want to see pretty things not sad reality.
Then the market does what it wants.

Well done. I'm rather new to anime myself, but I have found it to be consistently several steps beyond anything I see in the West when it comes to values depicted and overall wholesomeness. In fact, one of the reasons I ended up interested in it was because I'm tired of having to constantly skip through sex scenes and roll my eyes at other indecencies when I watch movies and TV.
Then I discovered that there's a whole segment of the population that wildly condemns anime and I was perplexed by this. I liked anime for being exactly the OPPOSITE of what these people were claiming it was. I thought maybe I was the one who just happened to watch the tiny percentage of anime that were clean, but now I think it was those people who were watching the percentage that weren't.
Anime does have those aspects which are essentially nonexistent in western media. But Anime also has polygamy and Homosexuality, which are also pretty big parts of Anime. Yuri and Harem are very popular. But I don't think they are nearly as destructive as western media, because even in those anime, femininity and virtues are still very prevalent. Compared to western media which as you said, tries its hardest to get rid of those things.
That, and perverted mcs often have, in universe, reputations of being perverted to the point where many girls avoid him like the plague and the guys want to beat the shit out of the degenerate
I think that even harem and yuri exist, these genres have diferent effects because dont try to be taken so seriously. They use to be comedy and slice of life, contrary to modern Netflix series that seem to always emphatize the importancy of embrace your sexuality and that it means true freedom.
Yuri is literally just fetish. I mean it's just two girls having sex. Yet these "Christian" people nag about "virtues" not saying homosexuality is bad but WHY SEX? Isn't it just porn/hentai 😂
Harem anime is still significantly less degenerate than anything you'd see on HBO or Showtime.
@@305Independent honestly true
That point about chastity is really really important.
It's often an issue for me regarding how sexualized characters can be so sexually modest in anime. How the fictional character who "has standards" is partaking in an ethical act simply by punishing the in-universe projection of the viewer in proportion of the sexualization.
For example, an average looking anime guy could walk into a shower not knowing the female character was there, and accidentally stumbling into her in a bath towel. Since it's not a super egregious act (and an honest mistake), he typically will get away with a disgusted stare or a "hmph!".
Scenes like this typically devolve into a "towel falling off while she is monologuing" or "while yelling at him for walking into the ladies' room she slips and he has to grope her to save her" to create an excuse for the studio to give the viewer more eye candy or "fanservice".
Even though the scene is horribly unrealistic, it feels reasonable enough for the viewer to suspend their disbelief because the two people in this scene have "standards" and are characterized ethically enough to act as anchors for the events of the show.
The scene is also usually ends with the male, who supposedly did nothing ethically wrong, receiving a physical reprimand for his honest mistake to satisfy the female character's anger towards him, hence it feels like "no harm done" even though there was a creepy guy watching the entire thing unfold from start to finish: the viewer.
Ghislaine is disgusting though.

i'll have to make my argument, its not both virtuous AND feminine behavior, its the virtue signaling of the western media that pushed their audiences away
whether it is an office lady, a childhood friend, a feminine classmate, a gyaru, a tomboy, a masculine women, a villainess, a female ogre(i know, i like a women who can lift my plates), the japanese makes better shit to represent a story, a character, a fantasy, an ideology, a message, heck even as a skit, many excels in delivering it, vice versa.

Let's also keep in mind the other side of the same coin here: Japan is also producing entertainment with traditional models of masculinity. First time I've heard of Yakuza series was from a female acquaintance who loved it for the male characters who were to her what anime girls are to us: a reconstruction of traditional positive gender models. Strength, loyalty, virtue, independence, status, decisiveness, etc., are all displayed by much of Yakuza cast. It's attractive to the female audience and aspirational for male audience, and scarcely represented in Western media as well. No wonder Japanese media is becoming more popular with the few sane people left in the West, and it's hilariously ironic, considering how much stigma being a weeb used to carry.
I love Yakuza because I can stove people's faces in with a bench on the neon lit streets of downtown Tokyo while dressed for Saturday night fever
I got a similar vibe from Legosi from Beastars. And im not even a furry! I even use his strugles and possitive example of masculinity for my own characters
@@maggiesheartlove2734 What the heck, I just assumed Beastars would be something to ignore. Maybe I'll keep that on my radar.
LOL! I am not against masculine bravery, but the fact that a woman loves the Yakuza games tells me that women do love asshole bad boys over nice men. It's a bad sign. Women who go for bad boy criminals are typically the opposite of virtuous anime girls.
Yakuzas in real life are not simply just strong brave men but are also glorified vicious sociopathic gangsters.
Only *"Hey Arnold"* is good in toward western animation

Even if they have it rough and are considerably more tough than the average slice of life waifu, they're still women (Mikasa comes to mind). Waifu obsession is something I have a personal connection with. The desire to be loved by someone unconditionally, to be the object of adoration without the preface of needing to provide material things and constant attention, is something that is a dealbreaker for me when it comes to relationships. I don't want a transactional relationship. I don't want to just be two people living with each other and having sex. I want a soulmate and a companion.
So, naturally, living in the west, I've accepted that I will probably be alone for the rest of my life. Were girls ever like they are in anime? Were they ever capable of expressing such innocent love and devotion? I guess I'll never know.
Hey, I empathize my fren. And I think this is especially demoralized & afflicted on both ends. Not just women. Regardless, I pray you find whatever it is that you need. May Christ guide you in giving you hope and courage amidst all this chaos as He has for me.
And if I can add, and perhaps it feels difficult to find that now..but the fullness of innocent love & devotion you speak of could be best practically portrayed in variously complex, authentic feminine ways from many woman throughout history at least. From people like Joan of Arc, Princess Diana, St. Anne, St. Monica, Jane Austen, Anne Bradstreet, Hildegard of Bingen, and Mary & Abigail in certain biblical accounts. Visiting a ancient church might also help. One of Orthodox tradition specifically. Ultimately, don't take it from me though. Research these things for yourself. Bless you!

Man, half this video is what I've been telling my family and friends for quite a few years now... I can't stand western media's lack of well-written and virtuous stories and characters; instead, we get anti-heroes and villains like Venom, Maleficent, Deadpool, etc. And especially the lack of femininity. I never pieced it together like you did though, so let me commend you as best I can Pax. Absolutely loving your videos!
One thought that occurred to me the second time watching this through... What are your thoughts on the common tropes in anime and in particular the female characters? Tropes of the insanely strong female characters that beat everyone up or the tropes of eating food and not ceasing about how delicious it is and etc.?? Is it just something for the humor or for the cuteness or what?...
Modern writers fundamentally misunderstand the concept of "anti-heroes". They think anti-heros are completely amoral and are just edgy characters that sort of do whatever they want. That is not an anti-hero, that is a nihilist.
Anime has several anti-hero characters that are actually moral. A prime example is Benimaru Shinmon from Fire Force. He is a staunch Shinto-Nationalist who is vehemently ant-government and anti-authority, openly disrespecting government officials and sometimes even completely ignoring his ambassadorial obligations, and prefers to find his own solutions to problems that are more in-line with the cultural beliefs of his people. He refuses any help from anyone, good or evil, who seeks to make him compromise on his people's beliefs.
Yet despite this, he is probably the most moral character in the entire show. He is revered by the people of his district, takes a hands-on approach with government, personally fighting enemies himself and physically rebuilding the town afterwards. He also acts as a mentor who is wise beyond his years, and as a straight-man in a series where the characters and their interactions can often devolve into chaos from seemingly nothing.
That was seriously insightful. Thank you.
Actual pretty good video on the topic. Well done
This was a really interesting video and very well explained good job
This was a really well done video. Very great points. But at the same time too, we need to remember that fiction is fiction. Just like a body pillow is just a body pillow.
5:35 i could not agree more with that, It really bothers me when an anime adds a visually provocative character for no real reason other than sex sells, like for example Catleya from violet evergarden, WHAT IS THE POINT? It is a show about a female veteran who lost her emotions due to ptsd and she is slowly Re learning them back via job that consist of human interacción and personal sentimental letter writing, that visual design has no place in a show like this
But to be fair it CAN work like for example Faye valentine from cowboy bebop, she is part of a group of vigilantes who make a living off of bounties and work outside of the norms and rules of society so it makes sense that she looks like that
@@time4manmode945 bruh. violet looks more beautiful than catleya.

Great video! I completely agree with all of your points. Japan was almost completely isolated from the rest of the world between the 17th and 19th century, due to the sakoku policies. Because of that, they never got exposed to the progressive ideas that gained prominence during the age of "englightenment" in Europe. In reality, it wasn't enlightenment at all, but pure subversion that evolved into the liberal ideologies of today. Eventually Japan reestablished its relations with the rest of the world, but because of its period of isolation it managed to emerge in the modern era with its traditional culture almost intact. Japanese society still holds on to its roots while making innovations, and that's what makes it so attractive to western people, who are starved for order and tradition.
Personally, I believe that concepts such as honor, dignity and virtue are fundamental to keep a society healthy. The western world has largely abandoned these ideals, while Japan still holds on to them. I've always felt that there was something different about japanese fiction (not just anime, but their literature in general), and recently I've come to realize that this gap between japanese and western fiction is due to the way Japan implements its values into their works. The one thing that stands out to me the most is how japanese fiction, especially anime, manages to explore profoundly brutal aspects of life in a way that is touching, while western fiction makes you feel dirty. I've always thought that western movies and TV shows were so vulgar that it made it hard to care about the characters and plot of the stories. The way romance and sex is depicted in western media always felt especially vulgar and uncomfortable for me. Japanese literature depicts all aspects of life in a way that feels beautiful and genuine. Anime girls are a great example: they embody femininity, virtue, loyalty and purity. But it goes beyond that. Even in stories that portray violence or sexual immorality, it never feels pointless. It's not there to incentivize an immoral way of living, but to teach a lesson about what is right and wrong.
Anime is one of the only mediums of literature in the modern world that still portrays femininity as an ideal. In fact, not only femininity, but traditional virtues in general are always strongly idealized in anime. One of my favorite tropes is how great warriors are respected and honored in anime. It's almost a cliché when someone defeats an opponent in battle, but still respects them deeply for the challenge that they posed and for the way that they fought (valiantly, honorably, etc), and even refuses to allow anyone to insult their opponent. It's a way to portray codes of honor as sacred even when dealing with enemies. One example of an anime that features that kind of scene is Vinland Saga.
Going back to anime girls, I think my favorite thing about them is how loyal they are. There are scenes in anime where a woman has the option to betray the hero, and would even benefit from doing so, but refuses to do it out of loyalty. I think anime completely changed my perspective on what it means for a woman to be loyal. I feel like loyalty is very frequently confused with fidelity. Fidelity being simply the idea that you should not cheat on a relationship. But loyalty is much more than that. I think loyality is never acting against your partner's will. It's trusting unconditionally that the person you love will make the best decisions for you. Of course, I think most men in the west nowadays do not have a strong enough character to be worthy of a woman's loyalty like this. A good head of family needs to be a good leader, and that is a rarity in the west right now. However, even so I still think it's important for loyalty to be considered a virtue, and anime does a great job incentivizing that. Sometimes it feels like anime and self-improvement communities on the internet are the only things that will keep western society from collapsing in the future, lol. Anyway, I don't know if you will read this because this video is 2 years old, but I think your content is great and very important during these times. Keep up the good work!
Wow, this really blew my mind. As a historian myself it makes sense. My area of expertise lies mostly with European history after the fall of the Roman Empire (476 Ad) to the beginnings of the Renaissance (Fall of Constantinople 1453). I never really linked the age of Enlightenment to the modern age until I read this comment but the likeness of the two are inseparable. Especially in regards to toleration, although the people living throughout the 18th century would most likely be disgusted by what we in the future tolerate. They'd probably perceive modern western values on the very radical side of toleration, in fact, probably so radical it was never even considered.
Exactly this. I've always said the enlightenment and its consequences have been a disaster for western society (and by its influence humanity).
@@guccicoupons I've argued it's all primarily rooted in the individualism and undermining of church authority and tradition that we saw emerge in the enlightenment: individualism inevitably argues for this tolerance, and the loss of church tradition enables it to argue for the tolerance. I'm keeping it brief but that's the basic idea.
The irony in your last two sentences is that, had you told many of the thinkers of the movement the consequences of their ideas, they probably would have argued it to be the slippery slope fallacy, the same way people argue this case today even as we continue to tolerate even more things.
@@SuperG4M3R45 fair enough, it truly sucks living in the west. I actually just submitted an application to teach English in Japan a few days ago. I’ve been wanting to experience a collectivist society for awhile now.
@@guccicoupons Best of luck with that. Keep in mind Japan has its own problems you'll have to learn to deal with, and many Western values are still being pushed there through US economic, political, and cultural influence. They're just being much slower to adopt them because of said collectivism (thankfully).

These are the personality traits that, in modern society, have become instinctive. Although while some opponents claim that anime is anti-feminism, they are unaware that every anime girl embodies the qualities of an ideal woman.
These critics either refuse to watch anime altogether or watch it out of pure curiosity without recognizing its significance.
It's more so that ascribing any feminine virtue to women is anti-feminist in their mind. They want everyone to be miserable, like they are. If they watched Anime, that wouldn't improve.
