  • The 1 year milestone with the Cayman is just around the corner. I'll give you my thoughts on life with a mid-engined Porsche and try to hold back my excitement. Yes, it's that good! Not a short video, but I had many things I wanted to express about this car.

    I really like the color choice and the interior you chose! You don't see that many cars in the Night Blue Metallic and I think it's one of the nicest colors they offer. The Black/Luxor Beige is very very nice. You see so many of these cars configured in what I think are crazy ways. It sounds like you have no regrets about your awesome acquisition!! Life is short; you are smart to have gone for this!!

    Have to say... I drove my cousins Porsche 718 Cayman (yeah, yeah, lowest model) but I've never driven anything else like it. I don't think I will ever forget how exciting the car was... It was like getting into the car and once you started the car, the car was like... "wait 30 seconds, now fk###nnn drive me. Just amazed.

    Love your videos. I’m near Fresno, in Madera! So I’ve been looking to buy my first Porsche, a used 987 Cayman as a daily driver. This weekend I took a drive down to SoCal to test drive a base 2008 that I was sure I was going to be driving home. But I was shocked how sluggish the car felt driving on city streets during my test drive. It was a very unpleasant surprise. I was also shocked how low the seats were. It felt like I was sitting in the floor! But I can look past the low seats if the car drives great. So now I’m looking for an S version to try out before I give up on it.

The 20" wheels soak up the bumps just fine. This car rides smoother than the 987 I had previously with 19" wheels. Probably due to the 981 having a longer wheelbase.

      Christopher, the 14-15 models are all the same body-wise. Only cosmetic upgrades for the GTS. One of my favorite options is the PSE Sports exhaust (pops & crackles). I would also go for the Bose stereo. One option I wish I had was the upgraded seats (sports plus) due to the bigger bolsters, but the base seats are quite nice. Although the PDK is nice, I would go for the manual as it is more involving. I wish you the best on your search.

    Does your car has power steering plus option? Current looking for a 981 gts but seems all cars available around me has that option, not sure if it's a deal breaker

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety

      kqian0526 yes, mine has that option as well. From what I hear, it does not affect steering feel or response at driving speeds. It does help at parking lot speeds when maneuvering the car in & out of tight spots. So, I don't mind it at all. Just so you know, this is a software option & only boosts the steering at low speeds.

    • @Squirrelz
      @Squirrelz Před 7 lety +1

      kqian0526 I believe it's a software thing the dealer can have removed. so try the car with and without to see if you notice the difference.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization Před 7 lety

      I have mine without PSP for almost two years now, but when I recently found out that you can have it still added (=software), I investigated it. I thought it might change the behaviour at high speeds (I am not talking 70 mph, I'm talking Autobahn...), but that does not even seem to be the case. People who have it say that it makes "parking that extra bit easier" - now, I have my driving license for like 30 years and with that perspective, I'll say there are no issues whatsoever to park the car without the option. It already has power steering nonetheless, all right? Just forget about it... some people will complain about anything and everything... with or without, same shit, different colour ;)

    5:40 - By far the best tires you can put on that car are either all season Continental Contact, or Continental Winter tires. Continental Winter Tires will give you the best grip.
    6:14 - When it comes to changing the oil in your car, always, Always, ALWAYS GO BY THE MILES NOT THE DATE! If you go by the date you are wasting your money because the oil is still good.

      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety

      As I mentioned in the video, maintenance is not that expensive by the dealership. Nothing but oil changes & tires so far. Costs are mentioned in the video. Thanks for watching.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization Před 7 lety +1

      You can check a Porsche dealer web site, they have fixed costs for services, e.g. oil change etc and it tells you right there what they do on the occasion. I just bought my second litre of engine oil (but don't need it just yet) - after almost 2 years with a Boxster GTS. I replaced two cabin air filters myself, not because I had to, I was just itching to do at least something ;) Those were ca 20-25 bucks each, or close to that.
      I asked my dealership whether I could do an oil change elsewhere and they say yes, but in that case they would not buy back the car from me if that is what I want to do in the future... only with full Porsche service history. This may be different in your country, or at your particular dealership.
      Oh, and I bought an oil test kit; so I will take a sample before I have my first 2-year service done, which is basically a glorified oil change, only, anyway... that was ca 60 bucks. I just thought I might add that to the service history - makes the next buyer happy and is not that expensive.

    I thought about a used GT4 but the prices are sooo bloody high and not coming down and I think with the Cayman S you are getting 90% of a GT4 at almost half the price.
    One question, did you put some kind of mesh on the front bumper grill openings, like the GT4 has????

    • @rossyannis3000
      @rossyannis3000 Před 5 lety +2

      Doug, don't despair.
      My low mileage 2014 981 Cayman S had the ecu remapped to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km/h 3.89sec.... Pulls like the clappers from 3000rpm to redline with a hair-trigger throttle response makes this 98% of the GT4 performance at less than half the price, I kid you not. A most enthralling drive which gives me smiles on every outing. Cost of tune? A$1900.

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 6 lety

      Callum Shove Well, the Cayman definitely sounds better & it handles better as well due to the mid-engine layout. However, I would opt for a ‘09-‘11 if your budget allows due to the IMS bearing issues. Porsche changed the design in ‘09 & it doesn’t have the IMS. If you get a year earlier than ‘09, make sure the IMS has been replaced.

    1. Cars do not overheat these days unless something is wrong. Even racing in high heat, modern automotive cooling systems are very powerful, since clean emissions require carefully controlled engine temperature.
    2. What knucklehead set up an autocross course and left an airplane sitting there were an errant driver can plow right into it? They should have pushed it away from the course, at the least.

    Hi there, do you still own the car and are you still excited about it? The art is to find a car that you love for many years. There are a lot of buyers who lose their passion for their cars. So what about you? Iam thinking about a Porsche cayman or Boxster 718.

      Nic Mey , thanks for the comment. I sold the car recently, but I’m still excited about the 981. I enjoyed the car immensely, but have found that I enjoy manual transmissions much more than the PDK. If I had to purchase a automatic transmission, the PDK is definitely the way to go & I think it is the best auto trans on the market. I hope to get another Porsche soon, but with a manual transmission. In the meantime, I’m currently having fun with (2) other vehicles that have manual transmissions.

      Nicolas, that is very true. If you're after a new cayman/boxster, the 718 is it. I test drove both 981 and 718 and while the 718 was sharper, it did not stir the soul anywhere like the 981did. Settled for a low mileage 2014 981 Cayman S, remapped the ecu to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km/h 3.89sec.. A mini "supercar" which is just so exhilarating to drive, being a NA flat 6, I don't ever want part with it.

    I've had a bit of small troubles with my GTS. Bose studio broke, made farting noise, had to replace. Steering alignment was off at first too. I thought the transmission is broken because when I stop and usually from gear 2 to gear 1 to a stop. I hear a clunk sound. But I think it's just the clutch engaging and disengaging? It's kinda loud though, especially when the car is warmer the sound is louder. The sound seems to be made behind the seat somewhere (prob engine).
    Lastly it seems like my parking assist is broken too. Randomly beeps for no reason...
    Overall no mechanical problems, but only got 2 miles so I would be very angry if it did. Already doubting the quality of my particular car...

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety

      +ZDY interesting. The PDK can be clunky sometimes, but that's the mechanical nature of the transmission. Also, I've had the parking sensors go off occasionally as they are very sensitive.

    Your autocross drive almost sounds like you are driving a manual car. I am on the fence about whether to get PDK or manual. I am a manual kind of guy but only good manual is fun others are chore, never driven Porsche manual or PDK though.

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 6 lety

      sujanpoudel the PDK is actually quite good, but nothing will ever give the thrill and feedback of a manual. I actually use a 5-speed manual Miata as my full time autocross car. My next Porsche will be manual.

    Replacing the PCCB won't be cheap...its keeping me away from getting one with that option

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety

      mark haidar you're correct! PCCB's are expensive. But, they will last probably 100k miles. If I do need to replace them before I move on to another car, I will probably swap them out for steel as it is more affordable. But, I got a killer price on this car & got lucky that the PCCB's were already optioned by the previous owner.

    • @markhaidar4572
      @markhaidar4572 Před 7 lety +1

      TheVaughnShow didn't realize they had a 100k lifespan...that's probably something the 4th owner 8 years from now will be worrying about :)

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety

      mark haidar I've tried to get exact lifespan measurements from different sources, but they are hard to find. I you're going to track the car, they recommend you swap to steel, but under normal driving with occasional autocross, etc. you should get a long lifetime. I've done several auto crosses already & they are in new condition according to the mechanic.

      jnixa1010 Dealership Prices, a good German Auto mechanic can do it for $50-100 less. Remember, the 981 oil capacity is 7.5 liters, so the cost of good oil almost half of your cost. Dealership hourly rates aren’t cheap. Also, the oil change interval is 10k or every year.
