    The rear spoiler doesn't retract automatically to prevent from chopping someones hand off. As a safety feature you are required to hold down the button and in doing so you assume liability.

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety +3

      Thanks for replying. I doubt there's enough force to do any serious damage to someones hand, but I suppose Porsche error'd on the cautionary side.

      It is the same in the Cayman GTS. I believe if you are moving faster than 9 mph and you tap the button it will retract all the way with one push much like extending it

      Another explanation could be the adjustability of the wing, which would make rear downforce adjustable for track use. At least if I was a Porsche engineer I would have thought it this way.

  • @chilluminare
    @chilluminare Před 6 lety +9

    ...For several initial years the race of Le Mans began with the race cars lined up against the wall and the drivers few yards away from their cars. As the start flag would be waved, the drivers had to jump in their cars and start them to race through the tracks. Changing the location of the ignition to the left would 'save time' when the driver could put the ignition with their keys from the left hand, push the clutch with the foot and engage the gear from the right side, all at the same time...

    Another quirk: with the keyless go style system you get sensors in the bumpers to open the front and rear trunks. But they also trigger when you wash the car and water runs over them. So you have to leave the key in the car, otherwise the trunks will pop open all the time.

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety

      Wow, that sounds like it could be bad. Could you tell me what type of microphone you use in your videos & where it's mounted? Your audio from your exhaust is very nice, I have the Sports Exhaust too.

    • @slaWterCH
      @slaWterCH Před 7 lety

      They don't open enough so that water can get inside but it's still better to leave the key inside.
      Of course. I use the Rode Lavalier mic, which is mounted by tape close to the license plate. So it's close to the exhaust but still tucked in to avoid wind noise.

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety

      Does that mic work with the GoPro, or do you use a different camera? Thanks for the info.

    • @slaWterCH
      @slaWterCH Před 7 lety

      Yes it works using the 3.5mm to USB adapter. I always used the Combo Cable however to be able to charge the GoPro at the same time. But I had a few cases in which the GoPro did not record the sound properly so I got a Tascam audio recorder instead. The upcoming videos will make use of that.

    The window "blip" also happens when it is fully up, but opposite of when it's down...so when you go to open the door, the window drops a few mm, presumably to disengage it from the rubber track, and pops back up when the door is closed.

    Got a 2015 981, hate hate the front window defroster. When it’s on, it’s on high and high heat! Dealer had no clue, same as Porsche Engineering. Sucks in the foggy warm Fall mornings. Second quirk is the driver side drink holder on the passenger side, when deployed condensate from a cold drink drips on the radio console buttons. Wtf. Fantastic car love it!

  • @rbinteractivemedia

    My #1 quirk for this year may be a minor one but it gets me every time: I have to remember to hit the remote button twice to unlock the passenger side door. I always forget and end up trying to open a door that's still locked!

    What you will find with the positioning of the ignition key is that on LH models the key inserts on the LH side of the steering wheel. On RH models the key inserts into the ignition on the RH side of the steering wheel. So no matter which hand the drive of the car is you can always start the car and engage gear with the use of both hands at the same time. As you are aware its a racing thing.

    The wing is able to go into different positions depending on the speed to balance downforce and fuel efficiancy. I guess it is meant that you can manually adjust every position, that no one can estimate your speed by the position of the wing... ;)

    I like the left-hand key and the history behind it. I guess it gave Porsche drivers an advantage when they would race and do the classic Lemans start. That's where a driver runs to the car jumps and starts it and races. The Porsche drivers with their left hand could start the car while the right-hand was on the gearshift knob. A slight advantage.
    I just wish my new GTS came with a pushbutton start no matter if it was on the left or the right!

    @RuTube981 Před 6 lety +1

    Few things I don't like about my 981:
    If you have Navi, the right digital display on the dashboard can show you the nav screen, which is nice, but in doing so hides your gas tank level. So on road trips it's useless because you really need both.
    I hate that the infotainment system defaults to radio even though I was last using another media setting such as AUX. And not only that, it always plays the radio.
    AC is always on when you start the car
    I don't like how the USB and aux cable are in the glove box, meaning I need a really long cable to charge my phone or connect my audio or usb device.

  • @Trucho001
    @Trucho001 Před 7 lety +1

    A quirk that I'm still trying to figure out: the Porsche crest appears on the central screen for 3 to 5 seconds upon starting the car. This happens randomly (once every 10 starts, maybe??). I wish the crest would always come on. Looks pretty cool.
    Questions:
    1. Where did you get the front grill for the two front vents?
    2. How much did you pay for the GTS type rear lights?

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety

      Trucho , I haven't noticed the screen being random for me, happens every startup for me, but I'll keep an eye on it.
      I made the grills myself. I had ordered the Zunsport grills, but the fitment was horrible. Made my own out of aluminum mesh & painted myself. They look great & cost less than $20.
      I ordered the GTS tail lights from Suncoast for $439. Very easy to install.

    Opinions, please. Left side key was due to faster starts at endurance races. I.e. turn key simultaneously as shifting into gear. Second, left side turn key was to reduce the need for wiring in support of Germany’s war effort.

  • @CarolinaMiC
    @CarolinaMiC Před 5 lety

    The reason you need to hold the spoiler button down is because it was designed to go into auto mode if you tap it while going above 9 mph. If you are going below 9 mph a tap does nothing but make it retract a little. It's not really meant to be adjusted per se. It's meant to be either up or down to help maintain rear end stability at higher speeds.

    2 questions:
    1. Are you having any trouble with your fuel gauge? I just bought a 2016 Cayman GTS PDK and I am starting to think that Porsche configures the fuel gauge to the amount of driving you make everyday and makes an average. So what happens in my fuel gauge is that everytime I fuel it up it displays me different amount of miles. (Example: For a week and a half a drive it slow (2,000 to 3,000 RPMs) and my fuel gauge displays 680 kms next time I fuel it up. If I drive it fast for that week and a half it will display 400 kms next time i fuel it up). Is this a common thing or is it just configured this way?
    2. Is there any way you can configure the Wing to be placed back with your car keys?

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety +1

      Javier L R , Are you referring to the range of miles? If so, Yes, I believe mine is the same. It will most likely base the range on the current calculated mpg. So, it will constantly recalculate the range based on your driving habits. Also, the wing will stay where it was based on when you last shut off the car. So, if it was up in manual mode, it will stay in that mode the next time you start the car. To my knowledge, there is no way to make it reset to auto mode when you restart the car. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

    • @gsthree9534
      @gsthree9534 Před 5 lety

      It calculates range based on the calculated mpg of your current trip. You can watch the range change as your mpg shifts, like if it's low while you are getting to the freeway then increases as you drive at freeway speeds.

    Good video that received a lot of informative responses. Have decided on purchasing a used Cayman and that's how I wound up here. I am just now beginning to research and read as much as I can on the Cayman. So there is a Cayman, base model with the smaller engine and the Cayman S with the bigger engine and I'm guessing more options. What do the different model numbers
    981 and 987 involve. Also I read in this thread that it is best to buy 2009 or later to avoid IMS issues. Any more advice . Thanks again for making the video.

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 5 lety +3

      TexasRaider113 Thanks for the positive remarks. Basically, the 987 is the 2nd gen & was produced between 2005-2012. The engine was revised in 2009 for the 987.2 models, which did away with the IMS issue & introduced the PDK transmission. The 981 was produced from 2014-2016. The entire car and engine was revised again in the 981 series. Other than less power in the non-S models, all have the flat 6 engine. HP was increased between the 987 & 981 models. The 987 models have hydraulic steering vs electric steering in the 981 models. Overall steering feel is slightly better in the 987 series, but the 981 is excellent as well. I personally like the 981 2014-2016 models the best. I prefer the external styling, revised engine & PDK transmission. As well as the interior, which is much nicer than the previous generation. That being said, I would recommend any Cayman 2009-2016. I do not like the new 2017- models as they did away with the great sounding flat 6. Sound is extremely important to me & a huge part of the driving experience. I like my 981 better than my older 987 in every way. Take a look at the Wikipedia documentation for the Cayman/Boxster models for further info. Hope this helps.

    For the wing, can you see it in the rear view mirror while driving? Maybe its set up that way so you know that the wing is up with a press, and in case you forgot the wing was up, you didnt bring it down when you meant yo bring it up again? Never been in a porsche so just a wild stab in the dark from my part. Hopefully within the next two years ill be in a position where i can get a used one with out it giving me crushing debt for years.

    Ive had my 2014 981-s since November of 2016 (bought at 5,100 miles).
    On 2 or 3 seperate occasions, my touch screen will all of a sudden go blank/black and "restart" itself. Has this ever happened to you?
    Also a couple times, when I go to insert my key in the ignition and turn...nothing turns on - like a characteristic of a dead battery. But when I remove the key, re-insert, and turn again...the car starts like normal with no hesitation or hiccup.

    A couple things I find odd on my 981: how weak the remote signal is when trying to lock from a distance and the fan running sometimes when the car is turned off. Do you notice these quirks on yours?

    • @DriverGuy23
      @DriverGuy23  Před 7 lety +2

      rbinteractivemedia, yes, the remote always works better when I hold it near my head using that huge melon of mine to amplify the signal, lol. I have noticed the fan at times, especially during hot days, but I figure it's there for a reason, so it doesn't bother me much. It's sort of difficult for me to find anything that I don't like about the car, it's really that good!

    • @rbinteractivemedia

      Yeah my neighbor once thought I had left my car on because the fan was running. The remote thing was surprising because I can easily lock my Audi from around the corner whereas with the Porsche you had to get the signal's line of sight just right. Another gripe I had with the 987 was (and maybe it's just my experience) the extended time it took to crank after turning the key in the ignition. It sometimes seemed like I had a weak battery or something.

    How did u go about finding a pre owned cayman. I’m from Fresno also and there r not may cayman’s around locally. Also did u have an “expert” go over the car before you purchased it? If so who? You can email directly with your responses if you like. Thank you for your assistance.

      Edwin Eng I found this particular car down south near San Diego a few years ago & have since sold it. It was a great car, but not the exact specs I wanted. I find all my cars using AutoTrader. Just picked up a CPO 718 in November of last year. I found it in Connecticut and had it shipped to California. I have never gotten a PPO for my vehicles as they have always been low mileage CPO vehicles, so no inspection was deemed necessary. I would recommend any Porsche dealership which will perform a PPO for any vehicle you might be interested if it is out of warranty for piece of mind. Let me know what you might be looking for & I’ll be glad to help.

      Drives & Details I think I would like a 981. Not sure since I haven’t driven one yet. I’m a big Porsche fan but I really don’t want to track it. I want a daily driver. Not sure about the 718 since it seems everyone loves the engine “noise” of the 981.

      I would prefer the base model w/ certain options but hard to get what you want with limited availability. Most have too many options or not enough. Looking for a well maintained car just as an everyday driver. I’m pretty finicky and want one that has no chips or dings in it as well. Colors acceptable are white, grey, or blue with black interior preferably. Options include pdk, Bose, the steering wheel with the nicer shifter, dual ac and back up technology.

    • @Trucho001

      Your a/c stays on because when you saved your seat position in memory, your a/c was on. The memory saves not only the seat position, but also the a/c settings,
      If you want your a/c to be off when you start the car, save your seat position again but this time while your a/c is off.

      Y Lee for my V1, I ran the power cord under the headliner & down the a-pillar to the fuse box. I used a flat obd port extender to power the detector, but you can simply us a add-a-fuse connector as well into the fuse box. I would recommend this over using the outlets in any car because I hate cords & find them ugly.

      Same here, started driving a manual in '84. Tried to find a six speed Cayman, most had a lot of miles (why wouldn't they?) or they were a Cayman S. Like Borat"s neighbor, I could not afford lol. I finally ended up with a 2015 base Cayman, in Dark Blue Metallic with a PDK. I miss the stick a little, but I'm finding it easier to get over it every day! I might even try the manual option on the gearshift. Bottom line is it still makes me smile every time I mash the pedal!
