How To Fix A Dryer Heater DIY style
Is your dryer not getting hot? Here is the most common fix. If you don't own a dryer vent cleaning kit, and you don't clean out your dryer vent tube every year, you are asking for a clog, and possibly a house fire. The "dryer not getting hot" problem will manifest itself in your dryer not drying your wet clothes. Maybe you'll notice the dryer not getting hot. Even if you got your dryer vent cleaning tools, and quickly learn how to clean a dryer vent, it might already be too late with no dryer heating, chances are your dryer heating element needs to be replaced now to solve your dryer not heating problem otherwise no amount of dryer vent cleaning will help you now, although you still need to clean the dryer vent tubes, and vacuum all the lint out from inside the clothes dryer, which accumulates throughout the year.
    dryer not heating Samsung
Now of course this is a Samsung dryer, and although the taking apart of the dryer might be different than other brands, they all essentially pull apart similarly, and once you get inside, the procedure and location of the dryer heating element are the same across most brands, as is the testing methods, only the part number of the heating element changes.
If you have a dryer not heating up, the most common cause is the dryer heating element has gotten so overheated that the coil broke, and now you have an open circuit. Now you have an expensive dryer repair on your hands, and you must replace the broken dryer heating element. So if your dryer is not working, this video shows you how to replace the dryer heating element and get you back up and running and drying clothes again. Be sure to use the dryer vent cleaning tools in this video.
dryer heater element test and replacement
This video also shows you how to perform a dryer heater element test, as well as testing the thermistor and thermostat which measure the heat coming off the dryer heater element. If you have the dryer not drying clothes situation, you need to pull out the dryer heater element for the test, that's the only way to test and repair the dryer heater.
    Samsung dryer not drying
These Samsung DV42H5200 series dryers are quite a bit of tedious work to get at the heating element. Once you extract the heating element from the dryer, now you have to remove 9 screws and twist 4 tabs to open up the heater element housing.
Once you DIY install your new dryer heating element, you will not have a dryer not drying well anymore. Just be sure to clean those dryer ducts and dryer vents at the same time.

We have a samsung and have replaced the heating element twice in a month then found some sensors that aren’t all on the element were bad so we replaced them. We snaked the dryer vents out with a tool like you have and our drill , got a ton out. Well the dryer worked great for 3 days and back to not heating up. Guess we will have to buy a new one because it’s not the element or sensors we found. At a loss now

I followed the video perfectly and all went well. Just one thing strange, ohm test checked good on all the prongs on the old heating element after removal and the coil though mostly black was not broken, I did find the plate cracked exactly in the same place as the one in the video. So I went ahead and changed everything that came with the kit, including the Thermal Fuse and the Thermostat. After I thoroughly cleaned the interior I could get to of the dryer, and thoroughly cleaned the lint vent all the way to the roof I reinstalled the complete unit. After installation everything worked perfectly, dryer is heating well as new again. Why it stopped heating when ohm check checked good is still a mystery unless the crack in the plate holding the coils was a factor.

Very helpful! I had trouble fitting the repaired heater enclosure into the round hole at the back after replacing and re-assembling. Kept falling out as I positioned the bracket underneath. Was made easier by attaching the bottom bracket back to the heater enclosure (after sliding the enclosure back into the dryer and reattaching wires) with the single screw on the tab of the enclosure, then positioning everything, and then securing the bracket at the bottom with the screws. Also, the heater enclosure has a tab that has to slide into a slot in the bracket, at least on mine. That threw me for a bit - again easier to attach them back together first, then position and complete the final re-install.

I agree with the previous comment about having a first aid kit handy. No matter how careful I was, I still managed to cut myself 5 times just because all the pieces are metal and pretty thin, so like razors everywhere. Also, be prepared for a harder time putting it back together - at least that’s how it went for me. Screws come out much easier than they go in. Same with the bracket. My Samsung didn’t have the two screws on backside of bracket, fortunately. And finally, when this man tells you to take good pictures of your wiring, LISTEN to him. I took pictures and still was praying I got it right when reconnecting.
    Thanks for the awesome video.

Hey Jeff! I just replaced the first heating element in my Samsung Dryer about a year and a half ago. The first element lasted about 8 1/2 years. You have to take several parts off to get to the element, but the procedure is very strait forward, as you show in your video. I also cleaned the vent pipe and now it is time for me to do it again. I only have about 6 feet of vent pipe to clean. I also replaced the lint screen at the time because it was torn and allowed bigger chunks of lint to get through. Thanks, Russ

Usually we see a code on the Samsung models (most not all depending if the temp sensor is driven by a circuit board: tS, t5, tC, tO, t0, tE, tE3, tC5, tCS, 1 tC, 1tC5, 1tCS, Extra Low light is blinking. * some units have a fault code that wont allow the dryer to start until the filter or vent is cleared.
One has to ask are you getting no heat, low heat at high heat setting, just lo heat etc.- might not be the heating element coil. This is why we use diagnostic steps, basic electronic science and read a wiring schematic. VS most DIYERS and novices * even professionals shoot the parts cannon at the problem see what sticks (which is NOT diagnostic/critical thinking). HINT most wire schematics for dryers are taped behind or behind and inside the top control module (BONUS HINT on refrigerators there taped Behind the front grill, in the center or on the left side. Other common locations are on the left or right side by the condenser, or inside the refrigerator section inside the control panel)). Most show you the error code faults and most show you how to read the faults from there you can TEST the circuits, sensors, heating coils following the wire schematic to determine exact problem. If you cant test it you haven't found the problem. * like Jeff shows.
Electric dryers are very simple machines (most are electron hogs) vs gas vs line clothes outside.
IF I could recommend any purchase advise to consumers- STAY AWAY from all the sensor gadget features on a dryer (or washer or any appliance) you only need about 4-5 temp settings with todays clothes the rest of the crap manufactures throw on there is just plan nonsense i.e. sanitation settings. Dryer manufacturers use sanitation standards put forth by the National Science Foundation adding more settings and upselling is just marketing BS. Sure manufactures are thinking about a VIRUS sanitation setting.

Jeff, thanks so much for the detailed service video. Was able to get it done the first time around with very little hiccup. My model is a Samsung number DV350AER XAA03.
Only differences were the tabs on the front panel were a bit different and not as cumbersome to line up. And the major difference (which was a relief) is that the bracket holding the heater element casing didn’t halve the screws on the back that required the reach behind with the stubby screw driver. The bracket now just has the 2 screws in the front, and slots that the bracket slide into on the base of the machine.
Dryer now working like a charm. I have a home warranty that would’ve covered it. But it’s an $85 service fee and a wait time for a service tech. The part cost me only $28 on Amazon and was delivered within 8 hours. Took me only a couple hours of work time in between smoking a brisket outside.
    Much thanks brother!

  • @MisterBinx

Eh you just admitted it is the design that's at fault after saying it was the user's fault. The thermal fuse should open before there is any chance of the element breaking. It's a flat out bad design. A thermal fuse is much cheaper to fix than an entire heating element.

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  Před 3 lety

Sometimes the heating element can break simply from the stress of the heat several cycles of high heat before and the thermal fuse kicks in . Also we don't know that maybe there is flaw in the manufacturing I have had a number of people comment to me that their heating element cracked in the exact same place mine did I find that to be kind of coincidental. But yes when there's excessive heat inside the dryer it is our fault for not cleaning out the duct inside the wall and if you have blockages in there then all of the heat and humidity cannot escape out of the duct and out into the outside world, it stays trapped inside the dryer where it is constantly under high heat and the dryers are designed so that the heat is dissipating out the duct not being trapped inside the dryer

What is more is that they have so called authorized service folks that Samsung insist to recommend. Thank you for saving me $$. My warranty just expired two months ago and I was able to repair it myself within three days which is how long it took for the part to arrive from Amazon. Thank you for showing the heating element part number. Made it much easier for me to order.

Thank you so much!! We have not cleaned our exterior vent since we purchased three years ago. Again thank you for your detailed and informative tutorial, I'm glad we didn't have a fire before we knew about the regular maintenance. ❤
