Key Bridge Collapse Close-Up Truss Pulled Out Water
Unified Command in Baltimore released additional photos and videos showing closeup action as the LAST Francis Scott Key bridge collapse truss was finally picked up out of the water of the Patapsco River in Baltimore, MD on June 1, 2024, about 2 months after the MV Dali ship collided with the Key bridge. It was the final bridge piece blocking the 700-foot federal channel down to 400 feet wide.
Jeff Ostroff shows some analysis mixed with videos and photos to explain the process of removing this bridge truss, where it will be taken to Sparrow Point, and how they dismantled it afterward.

ASTM A775 since 1973 started the use of corrosion resistant rebar aka epoxy coated rebar in lieu of other more expensive options. Be interesting to see how this type of rebar is “welded” or wired together. Cement is not waterproof and after the initial set of 30 days should be sealed to curtail water intrusion especially in key areas or in humid conditions by the sea. It is often forgotten that cement has compressive strength but much less tensile strength and rebar is included to TRY and make up for this. It is surprising how often it works. This accident is perhaps an example of how things can fail. Only Roman structures using arches without rebar have lasted.

Noting in marine salvage happens fast. There is always the risk that the load of several hundred tons may break, twist or bend. You don't want to compound the operation by sinking or damaging a 1000 ton crane. It doesn't look like much is happening, but everything is being done safely.

Thanks Jeff, Good cleanup job. Lets hope new bridge is beautiful to look at as well as functional, a fitting memorial to what went before. Near where I live a steel truss bridge was recently demolished. To celebrate its long service and the efforts that went into its construction and maintenance a rather nice piece of public art sculpture was made from some of the salvaged steel and placed in a park on the southern approach.

Jeff, I am no mariner, but I would be willing to bet that they’re not removing containers due to weight and balance primarily. Don’t forget, Dali was due to go to Singapore, I believe, so most of these containers were likely destined overseas and will eventually be cross docked to another ship once all the debris is cleared. I have heard that she’ll be moved to Norfolk and I would imagine that the original shipper has been in the process of scheduling another ship to carry the load to the ultimate destination. Just spitballing but I think Sal Mercagliano from What’s Going on With Shipping channel has made mention of it. Thank you for the continued coverage of the cleanup. Much love to you from North Carolina 🤙🤙

Regarding container move, Sal made mention in one of his videos probably 10-ish days ago or so that the shipper had scheduled a ship or two to come in June 9th and/or 10th to transfer the goods so they could finish their journey. I managed to forward that little tidbit to Captain Andy and he finally acknowledged it. Going to be interesting to see if they move that stuff ship to ship, or, ship to shore to ship! Thanks for another daily report!

Hi Jeff, Was in shipping most of my life… USA port calls are usually last for customs reasons… shippers return mostly ‘empties’ to Asia, though some carry cargo. That’s why the vessel draft is shallow; she’s “light“. The garbage bags are called “big bags” 1m x 1m, made of tyvek or woven polyester (Fema tarp). Really enjoy your channel, especially the engineering detail… fascinating and informative… surfside condo and titan are my favs… keep up the great work… I appreciate your engineering knowledge and great presentations!!

  • @richardhartzell7059

Speaking of the "last remaining truss" & media reports not 100% accurate -- Most media outlets usually do the best they can-- but often build their stories upon the new releases they recieve. Take a look at Canada's GLOBE & MAIL newspaper's -- youtube channel that compared the Chessy 1000 to another nearby crane in New Jersey that is 2x's as big. It likely would have lifted the ENTIRE remaining truss section without having to cut it in 1/2. Unfortunately that bigger crane does not belong to those doing the current salvage work.

Nice job and good patient explanation of your processes. There are not many videos on YT on laying engineered wood over tile, so I was pleased to find this. About to do 1200 sq ft! My budget of material is considerably more, but I bought really high quality Flooret Silvan, which has the best click-lock system I have seen. Way superior to anything in the big box stores, including F&D. So several dilemmas for me are: 1. Whether the grout needs to be filled (the floor manufacturer says it should) - this could be somewhat mitigated by the underlayment; additionally my tiles are much bigger 20 x 20 format. 2. Underlay or not - I'm somewhat considering if float to use underlay, but glue, not. 3. Glue or Float. So these three are interlated really. I see your original intention was float and only glued because of the material. I have read that glue down gives the best 'feel' and lowest noise. I am certainly encouraged by your video not to worry about pre-filling the grout, but especially with glue it is going to planarize it significantly.
