"Broken in a way I'm used to" is a sentiment I feel in my soul.
I GM a lot of TRPGs, and so often I have to restrain myself from homebrewing too much, because even though I think it will improve the game, it always adds an extra layer of people having to relearn the rules.
I happen to be prepping a Pokémon campaign at the moment, and I've resolved to not touch the type chart at all because anyone who happens to have memorized the chart will only be confused and hurt by any change to it. (and let's face it, the type of person willing to play a Pokémon TRPG is fairly likely to have memorized the type chart)

Tbh it's a bit more complex than it needs to be, very heavy crunch, probably as close as you can get to just using the Pokémon video game mechanics in a TRPG.
It has all the same moves, abilities, and held items, which already is a truly bonkers amount of content, but it also has a rich class system for trainers that I really like.

@@SugarSpice07 There's actually quite a few kicking around, nothing officially branded but a lot of fanmade games.
Depending on how involved you want the mechanics, there's games that just have generic elemental attacks and are more roleplay focused, there's games where pokemon are glorified class abilities, and there's games that intricately represent as much as possible from the videogames and other media.
PTR is the latter, it includes every move and every ability, most of the items, and a butt-load of trainer class options.
There's even a class based on the RéBURST manga where you can fuse with your pokemon to become a hybrid form.

Gen 1 prepare you rather poorly, with the only two real counters to Brock outside of starters being Mankey and Butterfree, but you'll have access to counters in Bellsprout/Oddish for Misty and Geodude and Diglett for Surge
Gen 2 is perfect, you can get Geodude and Onix early and they can easily handle the first three or even four gyms on their own, the only starter that has any advantage to begin with is Cyndaquil against the second gym of the first 3
Gen 3 gives you access to Seedot/Lotad and Shroomish to handle the first gym, Sableye in two of the games can sweep the second gym, with Beautifly/Dustox being a runner-up and best option for Ruby, and you could use Nincada or Shedinja, just needing to take out Voltorb since it knows rollout, the rest being unable to hit Shedinja at all
Gen 4 have Machop found right next to the first gym which is a decent counter for the gym, can even trade it for an Abra afterwards that can be useful against the second gym's ace in Roserade, you can also find Ponyta right next-door or use a Starly now a Staravia from the early routes, After that though, it gets a bit complicated, as the third gym is switched around in Platinum to being Fantina and her ghosts, If you could get dark type at this point in the game it would be trivial, however, i can't remember any Dark types you have access to at this point in the game except Umbreon from the gift Eevee. In diamond and Pearl you have access to several grass types in the great marsh to handle the third gym
Gen 5 is in a precarious situation, the first gym's leader is determined by your starter, but assuming you no longer pick one, i guess you get to pick the monkey that is good against theirs as that is what you normally would do? for the second gym you can get Rogenrola to resist the normal type (and the high defense cover against the dark non-STAB bite and crunch), the third Gym is hard if you didn't pick Pansear, with the only other real counter being Rogenrola who will struggle against Leavanny
Gen 6, Easy enough, you can trade for a Farfetch'd or catch a Fletchling for the fist gym, and being so far to the second gym, you'll have plenty of options to handle the Rock types, despite having a Tyrunt. And the third gym have 3 good counters right after the second gym, in Emolga, Sigilyph and Hawlucha
Gen 7 doesn't have Gyms but i'm fairly certain you can get a counter for all the first major battles without a starter.
      Gen 8 Wild Area.
Gen 9, haven't played, but as far as i've been told, it's open what gym you tackle in what order, and you can go about do other challenges before then, you probably have options to use in battle.
As for who prepares you the best, it'd probably be gen 2, 8, and 6, as gen 2 have two counters that alone can tackle the first 3 gyms, while the other two have access to such a variety that you will likely have a counter for the early game.
The ones that prepare you the worst being gen 5, 1 and 4 by virtue of not having easy or any access to counters and in gen 1 specifically, few trainers to train on before the first gym and only 2 counters, one at an optional route and the other being a type combination you'd think would get demolished by Brock, had he had any rock moves (which he does in the remakes).

Ive thought about this too. There’s lots of Levitate pokemon with boring secondary types like psychic, or pokemon that are flying but don’t have wings. A Floating/Levitating type would have been a really good special counterpart to flying in the physical/special split days. It could lose the electric/ice/rock weaknesses while gaining weaknesses like ghost/dark/bug. The theme being that their flight could be impaired more by fear than by physical ailments. Offensively it would be a bit more difficult to figure out what it should be good against without stepping on Flying’s toes too much though. Maybe take the fighting super-effectiveness from Flying and also make it good against types with few weaknesses like electric or water or steel or normal even if they don’t make sense lol.

Personally I think ice and earth should both be weak to each other. It’d be a unique dynamic that doesn’t currently exist and I feel either can do a lot of damage to the other when on the “offensive”. I also think that steel should resist Earth but not be super effective against it as while steel hitting earth doesn’t have majorly different results hitting metal with rocks or dirt do next to nothing. Also, cool move idea: Sharpening Stone, an Earth (or rock) move specifically for double battles where a rock type Pokemon sacrifices half its hp to raise the attack of its steel-type ally by 3. Very niche likely but competitively viable

      @pjanderson4876 Před 5 měsíci +16

I agree, I think the rock and ground type are fine to stay separate. Mikey made Flying way better defensively, and Steel and Water a little better defensively, none of which needed the help. At the same time, he kinda held up a middle finger to Bugs, because they lose their best resistance, and keep one of their worst weaknesses. Bugs did not need to be made worse, and unless I missed it, I don’t think they talked about that at all. The Sandstorm buff is no longer needed if the Earth type is better defensively than Rock, so it just makes sand broken-like Ubers broken for no good reason.

Water is present in a lot of things, so applying pure cold energy to something will most often result in ice, and thus ice is also the easiest symbol to represent the concept of "cold", but the "ice" category in 90% of magic systems, including I'd argue Pokemon, isn't simply the "frozen water" category.

Why would Game Freak wanna do this though? Having the two separate allows for more nuance in the uses of both and gives them more freedom in how the two are distinguished in the designs. While some pokemon would definitely be better with Earth type, think about the type chart as a whole. This would just make Flying even better than it already is since it loses a weakness while keeping the immunity, but Bug (one of the worst typings in the game mind you) now gains a weakness and loses a resistance. If we're changing the type chart around for such an arbitrary reason, shouldnt we try to make weaker types stronger and nerf the stronger types? Say what you will about Fairy type, it gave Poison (one of the worst types before gen 6) and Steel the ability to actually be useful offensively while nerfing the really strong at the time Dragon and Fighting types. This just buffs the stronger types while giving one of the weaker types a bone (Ice) and kicking the other one (Bug) into its place

imo i really like a lot of the changes, though i think the one thing i think is being overlooked is how earth is more or less the main counter to steel types, and removing one of steels only weaknesses just makes it that much stronger.
we got some hints to it when wolfey mentioned heatran, but steel is such a defensively strong type that it warps the entire meta around it, and forces earthquake and earth power on so many pokemon just to have a way to deal with it.
steel giving up an offensive strength to cover one of its only weaknesses is a deal it will take every day of the week, because steel is a defensive type foremost and offensive second. this would make the previously mentioned heatran & rhyperior monstrous, but also pokemon like aggron, magnezone, bastiodon suddenly become far more difficult to deal with. in fact, i think rock/steel is the biggest winner of this, because they go from 4x weak to fighting/ground to just 2x weak to fighting.
if you want a good way to visualize this, imagine that earthquake & earth power had their base power halved. what would the meta look like? it would be a steel-type hellscape with the only real counter to them being fire types. even if you added the new weakness to steel in electric, that would still make ground/steel obnoxiously strong, only being weak to fighting/water.
speaking of water, i think water really flew under the radar as well. water is also a really strong type already, and similar to steel, its more than happy to lose an offensive type coverage for a defensive one. also, it doesnt even really lose anything offensively, because besides ground/rock types, life is still the exact same for it.
bug & poison however also hate their lives even more then they already do in this, since theyre both already.. weakish types? and just making their lives harder seems mean.

If a “normal” rat would not be super effective against Earth and just displace the dirt, maybe we could change the move “Dig” to be kind of a mix of Curse/Dragon Tail/Whirlwind, where if it is used against an Earth Type, it is a low priority move that just hurts the Earth Type and then switches them out, “displacing the dirt”. Otherwise against any other type it still works the same.

I always love seeing these kinds of Pokemon New Type videos since it makes people take a lot ideas into consideration.
If there is ever a sequel for this series, maybe we can combine the Dark and Ghost Types for a theoretical Shadow Type of sorts (not to be confused with the Shadow Type from Colosseum/XD Gale of Darkness).

On top of the whole water freezing and thawing and destroying cliffs and whatever that's actually how pot holes in roads are formed.
Water gets into whatever space from fall to spring and keeps thawing and freezing (and therefore constantly expanding and contracting) and making holes in pavement. That's why there are so many in the spring especially.

“Hardness” on the Mohs scale is a measure of how resistant materials, usually minerals, are to scratching, with a given material being able to be scratched by any material of the same hardness or greater.
Diamonds, while incredibly resistant to scratching, are very brittle and will shatter if hit with sufficient force in line with the crystalline structure.

I know it was mentioned that sandstorm would be an overpowered weather, but I think it brings it thematically closer to Snow/Ice. There are Slush Rush mons would benefit from Snow's DefBoost, so SpDef Boost Sand Rush isnt too wild.
I think a lot of individual stat tweaking is due but would just be a part of a more cohesive world design
