I thought it was because they always imply the different versions are very similar parallel universes (ie two whole different fruit themed schools exist in the "same" region) so logically some of the mons, no matter how similar, would act bit differently.. like the Paradox mons? In their "home" game we have actual info and confirmed sightings while in the opposing version it is more like "these are made up things that somehow exist" without much more info

23:14 I think the actual combination that forms "Syrpent" is Syrup + Serpent, seeing one of its abilities is called Supersweet Syrup, i think that would make more sense then Serpent + Wyrm, although, it could be Serpent + Wyrm + Syrup.

Probably. Its German entry calls them "Schlangel", with "Schlange" meaning "snake", and the "-l" at the end probably coming from "Apfel", the German word for apple, since that word is also part of all the Applin-lines' names, so the "Syr" coming from syrup is probably more likely than the y from wyrm.
Also, its Japanese name "Kamitsu-Orochi" comes from the Japanese word for flower-nectar, so the syrup-aspect is clearly important to it.

Saw it mentioned elsewhere that Terapagos’ stellar form is a reference to the term “Turtles all the way down”, which is referencing the fact some ancient civilizations thought the world was on the back of a giant turtle- Which was supported on the back of another turtle, and that one was on the back of another turtle, and so on.

    • @edgarwin7155
      @edgarwin7155 Před 4 měsíci +20

I believe you’re half-right. Certain civilizations did believe that the world was supported by a turtle in some way (it varies between cultures). The phrase “turtles all the way down” (which I’m pretty sure is exactly what stellar form Terapagos is referencing) is an expression of an infinite regress problem. Basically, if one were to ask why the world isn’t in free fall, another could posit that the world is on the back of a turtle, but to explain why that turtle isn’t also in free fall, one could use the same argument and say there’s another even larger turtle supporting the smaller one, and this could go on infinitely. The problem with infinite regress arguments is that they can end up being unhelpful and explaining nothing (or at least fail to provide a global explanation that explains everything cleanly), which can result in conclusions that are self-contradictory or logically unacceptable, which is akin to the definition of a paradox. Perhaps that’s why Terapagos’ time shenanigans of bringing the professor to Kitakami from the past leads to the discovery of Paradox Pokemon. Both paradoxes and infinite regress arguments can be forms of incoherent logic, tying Terapagos into the whole Paradox Pokémon plot line.

Surprised you didn’t include Charcadet’s evolutions, mostly Ceruledge. It’s implied to have most likely formed from classic ghost unfinished business, though I personally find it more interesting to interpret it as specifically a lingering sense of failure on part of the person who died before completing their mission. Pairing that idea with the grudge it holds toward the living(which js mentioned in Bitter Blade’s move description) also makes it even more of a foil to Armarouge; both carry armor from people who have long since passed on, yet while Armarouge is known for its loyalty and capabilities, Ceruledge is defined more by the failure and early death of someone else than its own attributes. Can’t imagine anyone would be happy in that situation.
I suppose in the format of your comment, Ceruledge could be seen as representing unfulfillment and bitterness, and is bound to a suit of armor. Armarouge, in turn, could represent contentedness, or even inner peace, also bound to a suit of armor, or possibly a funeral urn, as the armor resembles one in some of its animations.
Personally I just think the duality of their dex entries and signature move descriptions is kinda funny. “This is a certified Friend and they can use their psychic powers to use their armor like a cannon, isn’t that fucking sick?” “This armor belonged to someone who died before completing their mission, and is steeped in grudges as a result. Huh? What about the Pokémon? Uhhh… Well, it’s got sword arms, and uh… Oh, and it’s really bitter toward the living. No idea why that could be though we’ve mostly just researched the owner of the armor and what they didn’t accomplish”

I love its Scarlet entry, too, mainly because I kind of predicted it.
I have a Cinderace OC named Pyrostrike, who is *exactly* like Cinderace's Scarlet entry. He got that short fuse, yet he battles valiantly for the trainer he trusts, Clare, who always promises to make him stronger as their life together goes by. This dex entry just adds that extra charm to my favourite Pokemon and I love it even more.

@@yaboipktendo Okay, never thought I'd see a Unite reference here. However, as a Cinderace main myself I can confirm that while I might have a short fuse at times, though I don't have the nerve to completely throw the game. Instead, anger only feeds my lust for blood as a Cinderace main. I mean this in the sense that I would most certainly be happy knocking out the opponents' Pokemon and scoring all their hard-earned points in their face as an act of vengeance and in an act of winning the game. I do not only play Cinderace, however, as I have found recent enjoyment in slapping for crits as Azumarill and playing my second favourite starter, Meowscarada. Most may play to score more points than their enemies, but I play to rip and tear the opposition apart so that they can't score back. Welcome to My Life As A Fire Rabbit.
      Please laugh at my comment.

For Hitmontop, I believe that its consistent spinning on its horn actually helps with horn growth. By spinning on its horn, it whittles it down to prevent the horn from growing too long. When the Scarlet Pokédex mentioned that its horn is made from keratin. I almost immediately made the conclusion that Hitmontop spinning on its horn to prevent it from getting too long is like how us humans and many animals with claws file down our nails/claws to prevent them from growing too long.
I definitely agree that their might be some older Hitmontop who have much longer horns. But that can be boiled down to it getting too old to spin on its horn like in its younger days.

Shiftry are based on the Japanese yokai Tengu which is said to be based on birds and monkeys in varying combinations. I think that is a cool nod to the bird traits of tengu.

Hitmontop's horn grows constantly because it wears down as it spins. Hair (and by extension fur) growth can slow with age, so if anything, the horn may shrink with age.

The Ariados first entry about the string that leads home is a direct reference to its name sake. In Greek mythology, Ariadnye gave Thesus an endless silk string so he could find he way back out of the labyrinth after he was done slaying the minotaur that was hiding in it.

The swampert thing building nests on beaches might reference estuaries; which is where streams enter oceans. Generally, they tend to be fairly muddy/swampy until they reach the beach/sandy areas.
