- Ten years ago, Nintendo said "let's release toys." Things haven't been the same since. amiibo were always meant to be collectible AND useful, and now that plastic toy hype is dropping down to an all time low, let's see if Nintendo succeeded at any of their initial objectives!

my most miserable experience for amiibo hunting was when i called toys R us and asked if they had any king dedede amiibo in stock, they said they did, then i went over there just for them to proudly present to me an amiibo of diddy kong 💀

The moment I saw all those Amiibo on the table, all I could think is "Oh no, now he has to put them back when he finishes filming".
It's funny to consider Amiibo is Nintendo's entry into the toys-to-life fad, and it thoroughly outlived the toys-to-life fad.
They went "we have no idea what you're doing, we want in!", and ended up winning.
Indeed, their trick was to make them do as little as possible while having them do something (and mostly make then secondary things, rather than have a console revolve on them)

To be fair, it's not that big of an accomplishment. The Toys To Life from other companies was selling you on newly created characters, who were tied to those games, and lived and died by those games.
Nintendo was just selling you Nintendo character themed toys, and toys for other properties. Which were being made before Toys To Life, and are still done after. With the big appeal for some people, was it was a cheap and available figure for a Nintendo/third party franchise where the existing figures were rare/expensive..
Whether Amiibo existed or not, a Mario or Link figure would sell. Aint nobody pining for that random ass character they made up for skylanders, without Skylander's also being wanted.
Meanwhile, I have to live with the fact that I own Skylander toys...

My Amiibo horror story is that I worked at Best Buy during the craze and despite being an employee, I got no special access to rare ones. All I had was special knowledge that our store only had one Wario Amiibo on release day. I had to be there at store open or else I wouldn't get it. So I drove there at 4am and waited in my car. This was winter so it was freezing. After a few hours, I had to pee. But I certainly wasn't going to give up my spot by leaving to go to a gas station or something. So...I got in the back seat, opened up my travel mug that previously held coffee, and...well. Yeah. Anyway, I did get the Wario amiibo. EARNED the Wario amiibo

I just wanna give a shout-out to Shovel Knight for having one of the most substantial features I can think of that's locked behind an amiibo - The Custom Knight, which is a playable character with access to so many different and exclusive items that it's basically a fifth playable character.
Kind of unfortunate that such a substantial feature is stuck behind an amiibo, but at the same time, DAMN did it make the figure worth owning.
There was nothing worse than store exclusive amiibo. I will never forget having to wait at GameStop for hours for the Ness amiibo because the computers went down.
I managed to get a Shulk Amiibo from a convention, so I lucked out there.
The Rosalina Amiibo was exclusively sold in Target but unfortunately around that time Target Canada was going bankrupt so you couldn't get it if you lived in Canada at the time.
But was that just an american thing? Cause I dont remember that being the case in europe

Amiibo are definitely my favorite of the "Toys To Life" stuff. I am a fellow "I have totally made great financial decisions" person, and to be fair I don't regret it. They eventually became really high quality, and they're great collectables that are relatively affordable. Here's some fun LORE about them that didn't make the cut in the video, but are really interesting/Funny:
The Great Amiibo Heist of 2015:
When the Green Squid Amiibo was first launched in Europe, it was exclusive to a "Amiibo N' Game" bundle with Splatoon. During the shipment, a ENTIRE LORRY carrying a large margin of GAME's shipment of the bundle was stolen. Due to this, GAME was not able to supply most/any of the preorders for the bundle, and a Green Squid amiibo became one of the rarest amiibos in Europe, as that was the only way to obtain the amiibo in Europe for a bit of time. The perpetrator has never been found, and the case remains unsolved.
Amiibo Quality Increase:
Around 2017-2018, the standard amiibo price increased from an average $12.99 USD to $14.99 USD. While you could blame it on inflation, this was also around the time that quality control was overhauled for amiibo, with several older amiibo receiving reprints to fix issues (Wave 1-3 Smash amiibo especially). The quality of newer amiibo was also drastically improved, with stances, materials, printing, and detail improving. This was also around the time amiibo production slowed down drastically on newer amiibo, eventually falling to the 8-12 amiibo per year we see now. (The Splatoon series of amiibo is a great way to see the evolution of the quality control)
Silver lining:
In 2022, the Silver Lining at the bottom of the amiibo boxes began to be phased out. While you could still get amiibo with them in it, it is almost completely gone now, allowing collectors to keep their amiibo in the boxes while being able to use them.
Amiibo Cockfight:
Oh yeah, you asked about this in the video. In 2017, the youtube channel known as ScrewAttack (Now defunct) had a tournament titled "Amiibo Cock Fight" that exclusively had contestants use their amiibos to fight. The losers would have their poor amiibo executed, live on stream. While the original video is gone completely, a secondary perspective of the event can be found on CZcams still in 2 parts.
Splatoon 2 Koshien Amiibo:
You thought the Qbby and Monster Hunter Stories amiibo were insane? In 2019, for the Koshien tournament in Japan, winners of the tournament would receive two golden amiibo, being the Inkling Squid (Splatoon 2 Version), and Octoling Octopus. These amiibo have NEVER been sold, resulting in their prices to be completely unknown. Very few were ever produced, and were never released outside of this tournament. These are the Pikachu Illustrator of Amiibo, and are the reason why almost no collector will ever have a complete amiibo collection.

they should've made an amiibo festival 2 where you had to scan the amiibos twice as often
it has its own special amiibo that have two bases, one at the top and one at the bottom . you have to scan both twice for that true e- reader experience

I remember when I bought the squid sisters for 80 dollars on amazon. That was a couple of years before splatoon 3 and the reprints. So I guess is cool I got to use them while Splatoon 2 was going on
This dropped as I was revisiting Captain Toad with my fiancé. We're trying to find Toad in every level and some of these have really good hiding spots
amiibo still have quite a lot of untapped potential that game companies haven't harnessed even roughly a decade in. Maybe if it had more functionality instead of just each having a few unique IDs and holding like a few kilobytes of save data, its uses would become more involved and varied.
Thing is that not everybody can get them and it would be bad if I was locked from 100% my game sorely because I didn't buy that piece of plastic.
Amiibos should be like the ones from Odyssey, help you with the game and give you cosmetic items, but don't lock you out of 100% completion if you don't have them
I am not advocating for paywalling in-game DLCs, like Metroid: Samus Returns did with its Fusion Mode, where it gave a new suit and increased the difficulty further than the already tough Hard.
That's the most contentious use of amiibo I'm aware of, and these are very few and far between, as it should be.
My concern revolves on how often amiibo didn't significantly impact the already substantial core game experience.
For the past decade, it was largely about unlocking minor features and handing out normally obtainable items and unique cosmetics.
These are fine, but it's not compelling me on acquiring the amiibo past the initial craze in mid-2010.
The best usage of these figurines I've ever seen came from the last two instalments of Super Smash Bros. Here, they can act as self-training CPU fighters that also hands you rewards the more they do.
If games were to get just as ambitious and smart as Smash did (if not better) when it comes to amiibo usage, we might have more one-of-a-kind experiences without coming across as scummy.

Thing is that, if they did, then it would basically become mandatory to buy the pieces of plastic to get the full experience of the game, so we return to the main problem were not everybody can get them.

Because that *is* what they should be doing so everybody can enjoy the game to its fullest, no matter if they have Amiibo or not.

Code Name STEAM and Fire Emblem Fates are still the coolest implementation of Amiibo in my opinion. Marth finally got an English voice! Conversely Samus Returns locking the hardest difficulty setting behind Amiibo is stupid.

amiibo are genuinely better than toys to life because you can use them in more than just one game or series. mario series mario is a smash amiibo, can be used in mario odyssey, can be used in kirby planet robobot to get fire, etc.
Imo, amiibos are the best video game merch ever made.
I couldn't care less about functionality mind you, I'm talking about the statuettes alone. They're amazing. They look just like the characters, with astoundingly few compromises. The sheen of Rosalina's dress, the hole in Chrom's sword, all the tiny printed logos on Min-Min. And it's at a price point of $13-$25, where the next upgrade could be $100+, if the character is even so lucky.
Character design is my passion, so I looooove that I can have a little gallery of all my favorite designs!
Thank you for bringing up how underused Pokemon Amiibo are. For a franchise with as much merchandising as they do, its baffling they just never did anything notable with them, they didnt even really try.
The only Amiibo i got for the functionality is the Splatoon 1 amiibo, NOT 2 or 3. In 2 and 3, it’s just a way to save a customization set…sure? But in 1, it unlocks remixed missions and new gear. Awesome.

I’ve always thought it would be a cool idea to make a board game out of amiibo.
Like each player would start with a squad and either side of the board and try to take each other out, kind of like that battle mode in Mario Party 3 but a bit more fleshed out.
do you want to know something funny? nintendo in 2014 was making more profit whit the amiibo than the wiiu console ($11,40 in each amiibo vs 10,xx in each wii u console)

It really is a double-edged sword. I love Amiibo unlocking crazy weird, unique goodies... but then it feels like that should have been in the game.

$130 is low, especially for the quality, at least at Goodsmile Company.
Honestly, that's standard for PVC statues. You're noy buying a factory printed toy, you're buying something that has a respected sculptor and illustrator behind it, likely hand made too to really bring out the finer details that may even have a small visual story being told through it.
Having gotten my first amiibo a day before the initial launch due to an amazon screwup, and having since collected over a hundred of these little plastic fellas. I can definitively confirm that it was worth it. They are neat
As someone who was collected every amibo. Amibo hunting is one of the worst things in the history of man. Some of my worst experiences are that once I pre-ordered the Sora Amibo and it told me it was ready to pick up and then I go pick it up and they said they don't have it anymore. Even though they already confirmed it was ready to pick up and then while I was there, I saw them in the back and I was so angry. Then, for the pyra/mythra amiibos I wanted to get it from Best Buy and it said that they had it and so I went in store and asked if they still had it in stock on the day of release. The guy says, if it's not on shelves, then then they don't have it. As someone who goes to Best Buy early when it first opens. I know that they don't stock some stuff that early (like amibo) so I asked the guy if he could check the back and he said no. But on the website they say they have it in stock at this specific store. And then he tells me to check the aisle and then come back. To nobody's surprise it wasn't there and then he checks the register and he says "looks like somebody just bought the last one online". I was so angry because I now have to pay scalper prices for it. Even though if the guy just did his job, I would have gotten it at retail value.

Biggest missed opportunity is that they never made an Mini Mario Amiibo for the Mario VS Donkey Kong remake
Fun Fact: The original Shovel Knight Amiibo is unique, due to the fact that it is the only Amiibo with the ability to use it in the Box it came in, since it doesn't have the foil underneath the figure.
I collect amiibo for collection purposes at this point. I never end up using them in game. I did for smash 4, but not really anymore. I’d like to get around to training my entire smash amiibo collection one day though. But I’ve been saying that for years.
When talking about shovel knight amiibo, you forgot that you get extra challenge levels and with the Shovel Knight amiibo itself, and you get a few custom items.
I can only imagine the fear going inside antdudes head trying to make sure he doesn’t knock a single amiibo over while recording😂

FYI, the reason why the put that cheap metal in the plastic at the bottom of the amiibo was to avoid people scanning a figure and then having "buyers remorse" or selling it back for a refund.

Can't believe it's been 10 years collecting amiibo...time sure does fly. I was just wanting to get the ones that looked nice and then I got my boy Shulk. Then after that...I fell into the rabbit hole. Now I'm at the halfway point for collecting every amiibo out there.

I have over 50 amiibo figures that I have collected over the decade that they have been around.
I spent a lot of money on some of them. Funny story: My amiibo for Joker costed me over $100 because I was in such a Persona high after having beaten Persona 5 Royal on Switch. I went through hell to get this amiibo because it arrived in mail while I was working during a severe thunderstorm that also had a tornado hit my area! Thankfully, my neighbor held onto it for me since they knew how excited I was for it. I didn't even ask, they did it out of kindness!
And then around a year later, Nintendo finally reprinted the Joker amiibo and now I feel like a fool for going through all of that headache just for a plastic figure of Persona 5's protagonist.
I did that Amiibo fighting with some friends over discord, was way more entertaining than it should be to see who can best a Lvl 50 Pikachu Amiibo.
I also challenged my friends to see if they could beat it and even the one who was competent in competitive smash was unable to best Pikachu Amiibo

Ah yes, the infamous retail exclusivity that amiibo had. Back then I was worried about the Rosalina amiibo because in Canada when we had Target, around the time when Rosalina was announced that it would be exclusive to Target was around the same time that Target in Canada had declared bankruptcy and shutting down all their stores. I use to like going out and hunting down the amiibo that I didn't have, but ordering them online when they're available and affordable. There are some that I still want to get, but I'm glad with the majority of what I got in my 10 years of collecting these figures.

I love that amiibo gave many characters the chance to be depicted as a figure in some capacity. They certainly were more economically accessible for many characters that only had a figma, Nendoroid, or similar high-price figure.
Wanted to share my own story regarding the Pit amiibo. I was a regular at my local GameStop, so much so that one worker (maybe a manager?) recognized me. So while picking up my Pit amiibo, he said that he didn't even put the price sticker on the box because he knew that I wasn't going to resell the figure. I miss that GameStop. Then in comes the Shulk amiibo being my only import because I really liked the character. I actually bought the ROB, Duck Hunt, and Mr. Game & Watch three pack to give to my dad, as that was the only way to get Duck Hunt. He has them displayed somewhere in his not home office.
In terms of my collection, Link and both genders of Inkling are the only ones that were function over my desire to have the figure. That might change as I kind of want to be able to use Marth and Ike in Code Name Steam. As for the Monster Hunter Rise amiibo, I bought the dog plus main monster for both sets. They provided a unique costume that played off the armor of the main monster. The only cards I care about are Wolfgang, Dobie, and Vivian since I needed my favorite wolf plus the formerly amiibo-exculsive wolves. I still need to get the Xenoblade 3 amiibo to complete my little Xenoblade collection.
Hopefully Nintendo will continue to sell bits of plastic that just so happens to look like fun characters. It makes me happy.
Skylanders Superchargers is unironically one of my favorite games of all time, it and the first two games from the franchise are definitely worth checking out 👍
Late but I have to agree on this. I absolutely loved superchargers when I finally got the land and sea vehicles. Seriously it’s very overheated
Never played it, but I might buy the Wii U version. The Wii U version has Bowser and Donkey Kong and they're pretty neat
I'm still upset that the Kirby Smash amiibo only give Smash ability in Planet Robobot. They could have easily programmed in Star Allies and Return to DreamLand Deluxe (which is funny because the 20th Anniversary challenges use the game engine of RtDL so they could easily programming in the remake)

yo antdude mega fan of the channel here I just wanted to thank you (even tho most likely you wont see this:p ) I was in a bad state of mind for a while and wasn't the best and sure some other things happened that helped but unironically a huge factor in getting out of that state comes from your switch eshop video crosscode unironically is one of my favourite games ever now like when I saw it on your video I got it but it lay dormant on my switch for ages and when I actually played it i couldn't stop I beat the game twice back to back and it was a huge distraction to the bad things in my life so thanks for these videos they do help people and keep doing what you're doing

I’ve never been an Amiibo enthusiast and only have collected about 30 figurines before giving up on the hunt. It’s nice to see the amiibo brand still kicking around 10 years later, even if half of them are worthless in-game.

Amiibo probably permanently damaged my relationship with Nintendo. The horrible way they handled stocking these made me feel so burned I actively avoided them as much as possible to never deal with that again.

I'm a high school teacher, and I hear kids talk about fighting each other's amiibos all the time. I think the collecting side is more for the adults, and the functionality is more popular with the kids.

I've seen people do Amiibo tournaments as a side event at Smash tournaments, although it's taken about as seriously as you would expect.
The two (three?) primary bits of potential Amiibo had were fairly simple
1) cross-game DLC. You buy one thing, and it unlocks content across several games, possibly with more coming in the future.
2) carrying data between consoles, which works in two possible ways.
2A) the aformentioned in the video method of carrying data from your console to a friends, either for PVP play or co-op
2B) carrying data between your old console to the next, like was touched on with the Wolf Link Amiibo
There was potential here to do something unique, but Nintendo was always so hesitant about it that they never quite realized that potential.

I remember visiting GameStop and buying the Isabelle and Digby amiibo. They still came with Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival at the time and remembering how bad the game was, I asked if I could just have the figures. They couldn't oblige me, so I bought the whole bundle. It was only $5 though, so my takeaway from that ended up being that I bought two amiibo for five bucks with a free (shitty) game as a gift.
I also got Animal Crossing Amiibo festival for $5 CAD. It was the best deal I'd gotten for an Amiibo up to that point. I didn't even have a Wii U at the time I got it so I obviously didn't play it (and still haven't).
It's subtle, but the new editing and commentary style is very fun. I'm hoping it's not experimental because I could really get used to this updated format
My favorite memory about amiibo is when my boyfriend purchased wedding peach and Mario amiibo. He kept them in the trunk of his car for a bit and gave them to me after he proposed. We had them on our wedding cake. ❤️
xenoblade is the one franchise still crushing it with amiibo functionality. They unlock really cool skins, but those skins ARE still available in the game, albeit behind a fairly high level endgame challenge mode, meaning you do get them a lot earlier with the amiibo. As for generic amiibo, they give you regular materials (useful for many sidequests and gem crafting), class EXP and class unlock progress, which is handy but again, non-essential since there are regular in-game methods of getting them rapidly.
If there were a hypothetical 'amiibo version 2', it would be awesome if they expanded their internal storage and actually started using it. Having a backup save file stored on your amiibo sounds ace.
I still can’t get over how the Mario Odyssey amiibo weren’t even different with their scan code things. Once Odyssey launched I immediately bought both wedding Mario and Peach, sadly never was able to get wedding Bowser. But one day I had just decided to use my own bowser amiibo from the Mario set and it worked. Same thing goes with wedding Mario and Mario, as well as wedding Peach and Peach. Thanks Nintendo for your wonderful plastic that isn’t even functionally different

Me personally I wish we got all 4 Dragon Quest Heroes as 4 figure set of Amiibo, I say this a huge fan of playing Hero.

My idea for amiibo functionality in animal crossing is what you scan an amiibo you will get either the amiibo itself, a clothing item that references the character, or a item that references the character for example Shulk’s Monado.

Funniest thing for me as someone who likes but isn't, huge on amiibo (mostly coz money) is when smash bros ultimate was announcing its characters at the same time amiibo festival was being sold for £5. I predicted isabelle would be added so bought it purely for the amiibo. And sure enough she was added and i had a functional smash isabelle amiibo for £5 at launch. And amiibo festival, (with amiibo included) kinda temporarily sky rocketed in value until the smash isabelle amiibo was released
17:35 I have this card. I think it looks cool, but all it does is unlock Shadow Mewtwo early without needing to beat the story mode, but if you do then it becomes just a useless decorative card.
i will never understand the hype around Amiboo. I mean i got the toys to life games like Skylanders which were actually "game pieces" but this... i still don't know what they "unlock"
