the metal sonic render on the cover goes so hard.
It's the sa2/heroes metal sonic design, right? I always liked it much more than his modern design
Supposedly "Streets of Rage" and "Bonanza Bros." were cut to prevent the game from getting a "Teen" rating.
But Streets of Rage and Bonanza Bros were rated E10+ both on Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. And the 3 Streets Of Rage games were rated E10+ in 2012 in a SEGA Vintage Collection release on PS3 And Xbox 360. And the E10 rating was already out when Gems Collection released.
It was 100% to keep the game's age rating down. You may notice a lot of Sega Genesis compilations have a T rating despite a good number of its games being suited for all ages; it's because they include games like Streets of Rage.
Can't forget Golden Axe.
@@BlueAizu_ Which I find interesting as the Golden Axe rerelease in 2012 was Teen, but the Streets Of Rage one was always E10+. Maybe they just weren’t sure as the new E10 rating literally came out like 2 months before Gems Collection released?
@@theultimatedriver3858 Yes, the E10+ rating was very new at the time! Age ratings can fluctuate for games with re-releases. Shadow the Hedgehog was notably targeting a T rating, but was toned down a bit before release to be E10+ instead.
Streets of Rage originally came out before age ratings in games were really a thing (psst, this is why Nintendo used to be so strict with censorship!), but generally it's agreed the series is best suited for ages 13+. Streets of Rage 4, its latest installment, is rated T.
The controls in Sonic R are a lot more manageable once you get into the mindset of controlling your character less like a platformer and more like a car. Using the acceleration button instead of holding forward, and using triggers to do hard turns make for an exponentially better experience.
Sonic R's controls being problematic is one of the best examples of a widespread skill issue.
@@ZX_STHhard agree
If you master using up, it's still good. I had Sonic R on PC back in 1998, Beat it 100% and that was on a pc with low performance.
@@shadowopsairman1583 Oh I did too, not really a question of difficulty but I still think the racing-style control is much smoother and more intuitive for the way the game is designed.
Pretty sure it was confirmed that Sonic R was originally being developed as a car racer before it was repurposed into an on-foot racer with Sonic characters, so that could explain it.
I remember having Wendy's chicken strip meal when I first played Sonic R.
Weird thing to remember but ok
@@GuessImaGuestfood and scents are strongly tied to memory. I remember having poutine the first time I saw the Xbox one reveal lmao

Fun Facts: Originally Sonic CD was going to be on Mega Collection, but it wasn't included due to emulation issues. Also, Knuckles Chaotix was supposed to be on Gems Collection but was cut due to, again, emulation issues.
Wasn't SegaSonic the Hedgehog ALSO supposed to be on Gems Collection, but got cut for the same reasons?
@@F1areonyup it got cut because sega couldn't emulate the trackball controls properly
Heads up warning, if the game's demos are not unlocking. It might mean your GameCube's or Wii's clock battery is likely dead. The demos are meant to unlock after playing gems on a daily basis.
Could it also be that he can't complete Sonic CD without the game crashing? Because I remember back in the day I just couldn't get the demos to unlock until I had beaten each of the three main games, or at least specifically Sonic CD (cheesed with debug mode of course). I could be wrong on that.
If you have to play daily, it's obvious there's a way to cheese it if the GameCube's clock batter is dead. Just start the console either without the game inside, or with the disc lid open to get the Console Menu, then go into and change the clock date. Play the game for however long is necessary to get it to save the date/time you last played, then restart the console with the lid open and adjust the clock a day forward from where you last had it set.
Repeat until it unlocks the demos.
These time-based unlock schemes are typically pretty easy to work around (I have a feeling its why Nintendo included Mr. Resetti in Animal Crossing to discourage manipulating the clock to change Tom Nook's Store's Wares, daily fossil finds, daily money/bell rocks, daily glow spot/hidden treasure, et cetera).
I loved Gens Collection. The atmosphere the collection had was beautiful. Also, there were gonna be more games scrapped for the collection. SegaSonic The Hedgehog, Knuckles Chaotix, and the lost Sonic 1 prototype.
This is how I first played CD before I got the phone version actually
Real. CD is my first ever sonic game I played.
Same here dude. I did have sonic r on the pc as a kid that came in a double feature pack with sonic 3d blast before I got the gems collection
@@xaglez.Yo same!
are you important enough to make that opinion stand out?
Same
Weird? Hell yeah. Underrated? Not in the slightest, at least in the sonic community. It's known for:
1. Being the main way to play Sonic the Fighters
2. Being one of, if not the only ways to play Sonic CD before the 2011 port
3. Letting more people play Sonic R (because who the FUCK had a Saturn?)
I had played both sonic r and sonic championship before I had the gems collection
"who the FUCK had a Saturn?"
Japanese people did :P
Main way? Y'know the PS3/360 port exists right?
@@Pinkanator This collection launched in 2005. The PS3/360 had barely launched at the time, and its ports haven't even been in production yet
@@Sorvetedchocolat Ok but the wording they used made it sound like it's STILL "the main way to play Sonic the Fighters", as "before the 2011 port" is used to describe CD there. That's what i was getting at ^^;
I get Gems Collection appeal nowadays, but as a kid I asked my mom for Mega Collection because I wanted the classic trilogy (and Ristar) since that was what I played on my brother' Genesis when I was a little, so when my she showed up with Gems Collection I was utterly disappointed
A friend gave me his copy of Gems Collection fall of 2010. Sonic CD was the main attraction for me but it was also a good way to conveniently play Sonic R, as I used to rent the PC version from the library ALL the damn time.
I treasure this wacky little compilation.
this problem is also in sonic origins they have knuckles chaotic soundtrack but no game
The soundtracks suck too, especially since you can't even listen to them outside of sound test. I'd loved to have heard Sonic Spinball music in Sonic 1.
@@YujiUedaFan It's weird because for some reason you can hear the music switch to a Knuckles Chaotix track with time running out in mission mode.
13:46 finally someone talks about that.
I always wondered why I would need to restart the same game 50 times to unlock like sonic 3 & knuckles in mega collection
I never owned the mega collection, I only ever had gems collection on PS2.
I remember it being thrown in a bargain bin next to a Tom and Jerry game for £1.
My experience with it was basically: play the intro to Sonic CD before quitting the game, play Sonic R to listen to the soundtrack and then the rest of the time was all spent on Sonic the Fighters.
Sonic Jam has always been the superior collection. Gems at least tried something different.
I played the games on it, but like every other 3d sonic game, I would sometimes just pop it in to go to the sound test and listen to the music
i actually really liked playing all 3 games on this, i remember being the hell out of them. i couldn’t finish soinic cd tho but i played r and fighting SO MUCH
10:24 Technically Knuckles Chaotix was available on a long-dead service called GameTap. I'm guessing since they may've already had trouble emulating the Sega CD at the time considering Gems uses the PC version of Sonic CD instead, 32X emulation was just another no-go, which hasn't changed in the nigh-on 20 years following.
Gems Collection was pretty cool for introducing Sonic fans like me to the joys of Sonic CD, Fighters and R, and especially their music. Though I do have to say the exclusion of games it could have included or did include but only in Japan, no matter the valid reasons, holds it back a bit, especially when Chaotix, SegaSonic and even Eraser are still in unrereleased purgatory years later. People critiqued Origins for not including other games like those, but it at the very least decided to only go for two complete collections of classic titles and Game Gear titles in the first place. It's also dare I say the preferred method of playing Sonic CD nowadays, with Fighters also getting a superior XBLA/PSN port and R at the very least having a fan method to get in playing on modern PCs in widescreen HD and no load times. That's no fault of Gems Collection in itself, but it has aged a bit by that measure.
Also to pick at the ending joke, I wouldn't hold your breath for Sonic Pocket Adventure, as there's apparently legalities that keep it from even being mentioned in the Encyclo-speed-ia, let alone being rereleased.
I remember spending hours just to unlock everything in the museum to unlock the classic timed games which if you beat the last boss fast enough you have a limited time to play the rest of the game from start.
Atleast playing gems is easier in europe since Gems collection for ps2 is very cheap.
or you can just purposely force yourself to get a game over quickly and then select the file with Super Sonic on the front with all the chaos emeralds already collected
For a giant nerd who was browsing Sonic Central all the time in Elementary School this game was a treat! This genuinely was one of my most anticipated games growing up. Thanks for showing this collection some love!
I absolutely loved Gems Collection. I used to love unlocking all the bonus content, it was all interesting to look through, and I even found a new favorite in Tails Adventure, a decidedly overlooked Game Gear gem! Gems might have lacked the iconic classics of Mega Collection but it was a pretty unique experience of lesser regarded Sonic games. CD will always be one of my favorite Sonic games!
YEEAH MY CHILDHOOD COLLECTION LETS FUCKING GO
I love the video! I was watching another video on yt before this that felt super over-edited and overstimulating to my mind, so coming to this video after was such a breath of fresh air. I love videos that are less ""in your face" with their editing, and more so just a way of conveying what u talk about, like u do! I absolutely loved this, please keep doing what ur doing :D just subbed!
I had both compilations as a child, but gems collection was my jam. Never really cared about the classic games, always loved the weird, obscure and flawed stuff.
Forget Shuffle, Rivals and all that jazz. We need a re-release of Riders, that one is so underrated.

I wish I had these numbers...
It's really quite funny, the box-art implies this but, with the 3 main titles and 2 of the Game Gear games, if this game had included Chaotix as was originally planned, this game would be the complete Metal Sonic collection of the Classic Series. I just found that neat for my favourite little guy.
Sonic gems collection more like sonic cd and other games collection
10:24 Knuckles chaotix just keeps on loosing 😢 😔✊
17:17 Very happy someone else appreciates the Manuals/Extras music as much as I do! For a time when I was in middle school, I'd actually leave my copy running on the manuals page overnight just so I could fall asleep to it. Even if Gems Collection wasn't AS big as Mega Collection, it definitely lived up to its title, being a "gem" in its own right.
The Manuals theme is so relaxing. I actually wish they used that theme for the Museum since I use it way more than the manuals/extras.
@kirotalksyt Same! Even Mega Collection had really relaxing (if a bit bittersweet-sounding) music for the Museum. Not to say Gems's Museum music is bad, but I think it could have been swapped with what wound up becoming the final Manuals music in-game and fit better.
Sonic Jems was the first Sonic experience I had, so to say it holds a special place in my heart is an understatement. It shaped my appreciation for the franchise, and is why I love CD, and Metal Sonic.
15:10 My Sunshine disc stops working when the cutscene of Peach getting kidnapped plays. This happens after getting 10 shine sprites btw.
Everytime I hear the ost for this game, I get a little teary. It just gives me so much nostalgia. I used to play this game so much. Sometimes I wish I can just go back to these simple times
I thank Sonic Gems Collection for introducing me to Sonic CD, Sonic R, and Vectorman 2. I actually played Sonic The Fighters all the way back in an arcade when I was younger. Got all the way to Tails and lost because he loves to freaking grab spam lol
I remember my parents buying this game for me, and it only drove me deeper into the rabbit hole of Sonic lore and franchise history. I became a Sonic-obsessed child, and grew up to be a SEGA geek. It was an awesome aesthetic and experience to discover, I was very fortunate to have it.
Sonic Gems Collection was my first real exposure to Sonic CD. I had only played the first few stages at a friend's house on Sega CD before his mom kicked us out to play outside. A decade or so later playing it again after borrowing my cousin's Gamecube and getting a game over was a crazy IRL creepypasta moment for me at around 3AM. I had never heard the NA OST that much as a kid so that was a fuckin' surreal experience.
(Sorry for run-on sentence. I'm so damn tired...)
Absolutely awesome video. For once this strange but charming collection gets the recognition it deserves. It was literally my first impression of sonic and i still play the game today🔥
Am i the only one who didn't grew up with Mega Collection?
Me, I was emulating at that point lmao
@@lpnp9477 Same, and im not guilty
I love tails doll, he’s not scary he’s just cool

Any time!
This is what I want from collection releases. I want those oddball games that are harder to find packed in. The current Mega Man collections should've included stuff like Battle and Chase, Command Mission, and Network Transmission, but it's just the core games of each series.
Probably the first "collection" game I ever had that made me fall in love with the concept. This and "Ultimate Genesis" are some of the best of all time, imo, at least before Atari 50 and UFO 50 came out.
The cover is kickass. It attracted me to the collection more than the game selection did.
Also, this collection introduced me to Vectorman, and I'm glad it did because Vectorman is sick!
I remember picking this up EXCLUSIVELY so I could play Sonic Fighters. I played it as a kid at Gameworks in Seattle and could never find it again when they got rid of it.
What fitting name for this collection, I do remember spending so much time looking at all the artwork and manuals back in day. So strange that this didn’t have Knuckles Chaotix, I could’ve sworn I played it on there. I know it’s not really that great of game, but it’s weird how it’s never been ported to anything.
You could play any level from Mega Collections on Gems Collections. For example, by beating the final boss on Sonic 2 and getting to the title screen, the player can do a level select. The catch was that there was a time limit. So every sonic game in Mega Collection is technically also on Gems.
I'd love to see a Sonic fan game collection, covering the most ambitious fan projects out there.
These collection’s OSTs are amazing on their own
Fun fact about Sonic Drift 2, the game was developed by Arc System Works... yep, the same ArcSys who would go on to create Guilty Gear and Blazblue. Also, the reason Sonic Chaos wasn't included in Gems Collection, was likely because it had already been included as an Unlockable for Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut, and was included in the PS2 and Xbox version of Mega Collection, so it's likely they didn't want to double dip on games already included in other releases.
Mega Collection is that game you get at a birthday party and have fond memories of playing through with your friends all Summer long
Gems Collection is that weird, bargin bin game you pick up & play by yourself on a rainy afternoon, and it just has cool, mysterious yet lonely vibe to it
im so glad to add this game to my personal collection. my obsessions started with SADX and Mega Collection!
Kiro thanks for making 3 in a row videos that include Sonic ❤
I bought this games in middle school, at the height of my love for Sonic. I still think it's awesome.
That is how I finally played Sonic CD for the first time, as I didn't own a PC or a Sega CD when the game was originally released.
Sonic R's controls aren't bad, you're just bad at using them. It controls a lot better than tons of racing games out there lol.
yeah sonic r controls more than fine i have never lost a race because of controls
Least delusional Sonic fan:
I like how early Sonic games didn't have a consistent set or number of Chaos Emeralds. They'd change colors, or even shapes sometimes. I like the idea that there are several Chaos Emeralds. Much more than seven, but it's just that seven is the magic number required to go Super Sai--Sonic. But later games, and the IDW comics, have made it clear that there is definitely only supposed to be seven in canon...
I love this collection, I live in Argentina and we have pirated PS2 games, I always wanted the Mega Collection because I already loved those games, but for some reason, no matter what disc I used, it never worked, despite this, my family got me the game again, but despite the cover being the one from Mega Collection, the game was Gems Collection. It was weird, really weird, the only thing that I knew about Sonic were the classics and some modern games, but, I played for hours despite not being the game that I wanted
I grew a special love for Sonic Triple Trouble, and classic Sonic in general, I loved unlocking stuff in the gallery, listening to the music, it was such a great experience
Sonic CD was like a holy grail for me because wasnt the first Sonic Game I ever play but the first time I ever saw Sonic and because this Game cover sells Sonic CD as the Main gem out there, Made me watch that Game as something both rare and importan at the same time, so I can tell Gems Collection did a fine job with me
I actually really like Gems Collection simply for the fact that it had Vectorman 1 & 2 haha
0:46
Such a slick edit, right on time with the music.
13:54 That's exactly how I unlocked all the other games on Sonic mega collection😂
The game demos are the most interesting thing about this collection. They're all the full versions of the games
Damnit! Now I need to go to Sonic Retro I haven't been in years. Need to follow up on the Sonic 2 HD project!
Cool use of the VR space, I had to do a double take to see its not real. That's actually a really good idea for reviews.
watching this video is such a nostalgia shot straight to my brain stem, dude
i *LIVED* on sonic gems, so much so that my family got sick of hearing that loud ass title screen music bc they knew they weren't getting that tv back until dinner (or until i lost to metal sonic in fighters again...)
i think i should dig up my gamecube again :)
You can use that save file with a dumped copy in Nintendont and actually complete Sonic CD if you wanna go through the trouble lmao
I still remember getting on my hands and knees at a Circuit City begging my parents to get Sonic Gems Collection lol only because it had Sonic CD
I remember playing the sonic r and sonic fighting game on our gamecube, but I remember that sonic R had a balloon aspect in it. Where you have to collect the most balloons to win the game
I remember how badly i wanted sonic gems collection, i was able to get a good condition copy until 2015
You also failed to mention in your video, (and I'm not sure if anyone knows this) but the demos that you can unlock in the gallery automatically give you seven chaos emeralds so that you can play as super sonic after you beat the final bosses. Since it puts you back at the beginning of the games in the first stage, once you collect 50 rings you can turn into the super form and play through the game for a limited amount of time. Kind of like a new game plus version of the classic games. This blew my mind as a kid, and I have never seen anyone mention this before. It's pretty damn fun especially after spending so much time filling up the entire gallery.
and if you had an action replay you can use a code to freeze the demo timers so you play them for as longer as you like and i really wished i had one back then...
I love that you used Emuvr for the crts smart idea love the video
18:23 this is either an issue with the system clock not working properly and preventing the game from keeping track of the game being played every day, or the demos aren't unlocking because you haven't gotten the image for beating sonic CD, I don't remember if unlocking everything from the main 3 games is a requirement to start unlocking the demos or if they just automatically start unlocking after a few days regardless of museum progress
CAN YOU FEEL THE SUNSHINE
15:10 funny story, actually.
This happened to me in 2006 and I tried everything and couldn’t get Sonic CD to not crash at the end. I bought another copy of Sonic Gems and gave the old one to my brother, but it still happened. Turns out though that my brother didn’t have the issue with my old copy. After deleting Sonic CD from my memory card and restarting, it solved the issue. You’re welcome 🙌🏻
With all of the unrelated games that were included or planned, I wonder if the original intent was a Sega Gems Collection, and that ended up just quickly pivoting into Sonic-only with a few non-Sonic hidden bonuses. Now if this was an actual Sega Gems Collection, with all of the relevant bonus material, imagine how massive of a library that would've been, given the GameCube's disk limitation it could've been a multi-disc set. Sonic just objectively has the most material for a collection like this, I don't think they could've really packed in a lot of adjacent media with any other IP, which is probably why a potential Sega Gems Collection pivoted to being Sonic Gems Collection.
i had this on ps2 as a kid i played alot of sonic r and sonic the fighters
Imagine this.
its christmas 2005.
you love sonic. You only have a gamecube and a GBA. parents get you sonic heros. grandma gets you mega collection & gems collection.
imagine my sensory overload that proceeded to last me the next 3 years as I also got adventure 2 battle the following year.
can we talk about how AMAZING the menu is in sonic gems god that early 2000s style menu goes hard sorry I just want to talk about the amazing 2000's vibes the game gives

I use to check out this game at my library back when they had GameCube games it was amazing man
I saw this in the video game section at Toys-R-Us as a kid and wanted to get it because it had Metal Sonic on the cover. I didn't know that it was a game collection and I didn't know who or what Metal Sonic was, I just wanted the cool game with a robot Sonic.

That's an emulator called EmuVR
@@KorruptedK9ine thanks man.
Remember buying this for my birthday just for CD.
I have both Mega Collection Plus and Gems Collection on PS2. Love 'em.
Had the mega collection on my ps2 it was one of the first games i ever bought with my own money. Good times bro.
Growing up I loved sonic fighters and sonic r. Playing it with my siblings was so fun.
Back then, I mainly bought the game for Sonic the Fighters & Sonic R. The gamecube has a smaller variety of fighting games compared to the ps2. Sonic R was popular w/me & friends. I remember unlocking Super Sonic first, then using him to get the tokens in the other stages
I would so desperately adore a collection of all the handheld Sonic games AFTER the GameGear. We've gotten the GameGear series thrice now and never any of the Advance or DS games, which were some of the most fantastic 2D games of the series.
Unfortunately, we will never get a rerelease of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. It was the center point of a lawsuit between Sega and Ken Penders, former writer and artist for Archie Comics. The plot and characters are borrowed heavily from Penders's work on the comic, but because of a mishap with his contract he technically owns full rights to the characters and stories he created during his time at Archie. That includes the Nocturnus Clan and the Twilight Cage. Part of the settlement was that Sega would never rerelease the game again or use any of his original work as the basis for official Sonic media ever again.
i like how you used EMUVR to make the video 😂
I have to admit when they actually troll you about the chaos emerald you got but you didn't win and then they just take it away from you, That is funny. I've always been curious about Sonic gems collection. I had Sonic mega collection on the GameCube and I love that game and that is despite the fact that I had already played all the Genesis games already. But the PS2 and the Xbox got Sonic Mega collection Plus which included even more games. I think if I had Sonic gems collection that would actually make it more equal to the other versions. Of course Sonic adventure DX had the Game gear Sonic games anyway
Both Gems Collection and Mega Collection were my exposure to Classic Sonic. Sonic CD and Sonic R were my favorites.
How do you unlock all of the Christmas images in the museum?
The Sonic compilation I got was the one that was on the 3ds I remember keep dieing on the boss fight over and over again when I was a kid on S3&K
6:01 this is only the PC version.
6:29 they appeared in the Sonic comics long before this game
This was actually my first Sonic game.
When I was a kid, I actually emailed Sega begging them to bring Mighty and Ray back for a new game... I'm sure nobody saw that email, but I was elated when they actually were playable in Mania Plus!! Hahaha
This game is indeed a gem.
I never understood why they didn't include Knuckle's Chaotix in this game I'd say it was definitely obscure enough and could have been easily emulated
the cover goes hard tho
A modern Sonic Shuffle port should connect to players' phones for them to see their cards! (since we don't really have anything like the VMU!)
Sonic gems collection came out on my birthday
