*I love how having no other playable character other than Sonic was a selling point in 2010.*
Man thank God I can't play as Knuckles this game Would have been terrible if i could

@@boombob3D People used to hate Sonic's friends back then. The 2010s were dark times.

SEGA needs to escape the monotony.
While Frontier is breaking away from it, that is technically a postgame DLC.
And Dream Team is an Apple Arcade exclusive game.
Man "Sonic 4" really didn't deserve the title when the Sonic Advance series is so much better.
Sonic Mania absolutely should've been the Sonic 4 we got. It just feels like it belongs as part of the original five titles, it fits right in with Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles and CD.
Fr sonic advance was the sonic 4 back then
@@koolaid33
"it fits right in with Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles and CD."
Maybe because 2/3rds of Mania is just a retread of those games lmao.
@@koolaid33Nah, Mania can't be Sonic 4 because it's mostly just a copy of the first 3 and it had no intention to evolve the series with each iteration the way it was on the Genesis.
Gee, it’s almost like it was only called Sonic 4 for marketing reasons or something.
"Sonic 4" could worked 100 times better if it was sold only on phones... and having another name don't forget that!
But it is on phones!
@@MustacheDLuffy he said " *only* on phones"
Eh, it didn't hurt too much to have it on consoles. If only it wasn't literally branded as a sequel and marketed as such, it could have made for a great $10 title or something.
I mean, Xbox Live Arcade was a thing, so having a sort of 2.5D pseudo-rehash of Sonic as a small anniversary release would have made *some* sense, even if it sucked a little gameplay-wise. Same for the PS3 with the PSN store. Could have made for a small time waster.
The Wii version was the only one that ended up actually making sense since that console was more on the casual side, just like releasing it on Mobile.
But a "fully-fledged" sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed games in the franchise? I'm sorry, but that's like playing Russian Roulette with a fully loaded Revolver.
Episode 2 made more sense all-in-all but the fate of this game is pretty sad.
Was originally supposed to be called "Sonic: The Portable."
@@mark030a Good point!
Sonic 4 was originally a mobile game called Sonic The Portable until Sega decided to rename into sonic 4. you can still see the original name (sonic the portable) on the Ferris wheel in the background of casino street zone. This explains why the graphic look the way that is does because the game made for a mobile release.
I remember playing the mobile version of Episode 2 a long time ago, man those were the memories.
Yo I know
Yeah
Me too.
I eat the cotton candy from my
Yeah man 2014 was such a great time for me
I still think the game is ass but I have good memories with it
The thing was if Sonic 4: episode 2 was successful then a Third Episode would be released. But SEGA decided to work on sonic games for the Wii U and 3ds instead, because of that stupid 3 game Nintendo deal.
Actually I don't think the deal had anything to do with that. Episode 2 just did not sell as well as Episode 1 did, which is what put the Sonic 4 Sub-Series in the Scraps.
Episode 2 was in development before 1 was even out. By the time 2 was basically done Sega ultimately decided cancel it, and have Dimps work on different projects. They apparently briefly considered doing an Ep3 with Christian Whitehead after his mobile ports of CD, but they fell through.
I feel like Sonic 4 wasn’t successful for a reason. I would love a remake of 3D blast, or at least revisiting those zones, because some of them were really cool and there was an element of puzzle solving
These games on the Ouya got me back into sonic so they will always have a special place in my heart.
This comment is cursed. Ouya AND Sonic 4? A match made in hell.
@@user-vi4xy1jw7e fr. it just reminded me of this crazy STEM teacher I had who said CZcams was going to be paywalled and the Ouya was going to singlehandedly antiquate the entire console market and become the only platform. I can only imagine what he had to say about the Google Stadia back when you'd get an ad for it every 5 seconds
i personally love sonic 4, mostly because of nostalgia, but also loving to think of the potential it could have
Sonic 4 is not that bad if you consider it as a simple mobile game made during the early 2010s. I bet this game wouldn't be so hated if they kept the original name and didn't had all these teasers.
I feel like calling it 4 implies quality in line with the og trilogy, which we didnt get in a classic title until mania (though im still mad that sega didnt let that game have fully original stages)
@@sixty5notch796 It's because Mania was a very short game. The addition of old stages was to make it big and fitting as an anniversary title. Remember, one of the game's selling point before launch was "it's longer than Generations".
My thoughts exactly. If this was called literally ANYTHING other than Sonic 4, nobody would give a damn about it. Just another subpar 2D Sonic platformer Sega sent out on phones just to cash in on the mobile gaming craze.
I find it hilarious the fact that if look closely at some of Sonic 4 backgrounds you can see the game's original title, Sonic the Portable. Yes, it was meant to be a smartphone game
@@pablocasas5906 Sonic the Portable
i just want to drop this comment to explain why the physics in Sonic 4 seem to be so weird, from what i've gathered, it seems like Sonic 4 was built in the Sonic Rush engine, which is why Sonic sticks to walls, uncurls when going out of ramps and has a spin dash that slows down. It's not something you notice as much in Sonic Rush, but that's because both the boost and boost heavily compensate for the weird physics.
why they didn't just use the sonic advance physics is beyond me
Yeah, In this case, they just opted to reused the physics engine instead of trying to build something similar to the classic titles, like what they had did with Sonic Advance 1.
Hey!Sega'nın telefonlara Sonic Rush'ı portladıklarıni ve bundan vaz gectiklerini duymuştum.Ayrıca Dimps hem Sonic Rush hem de Sonic 4'ü geliştirdi.
I personally really love Episode 2. I think the Levels are really fun to play, especially trying to run through then really fast because the physics are quite good and the homing attack allows very fluid turning. The Music is also a big step up, most tracks are quite nice and funny. I’d say it also has the best co-op multiplayer of any Sonic game. And it’s just 2€.
YESSS THIS!!! And episode 3 was gonna be worked on by Christian Whitehead and would have shown even MORE improvements and probably would have been amazing!!!

I really think it wouldn't hurt for Sega to make a Sonic 4 Episode 3, especially since Sega's gotten their act together with 2D Sonic so well with amazing games like Rush, Advance, maybe Superstars, and especially Mania. It might even have a chance to be good
Superstars was the only one of these that was made after 4 by Sonic Team
@@Rusty_Spy Superstars and Sonic 4 weren't even made by just Sonic Team.
What would be the point of that, everything that was new about sonic 4 was bad. You either carry over those aspects and the game sucks, or you don't carry them over and there's no point in calling it sonic 4.
@@ohno5559 That's not true Sonic 4 Ep II was a significant step up from I while keeping what kept it sonic 4 resulting in a flawed but solid game with Ep III they could easily do the same.
@@johnman8398 The tails/sonic combo moves were a legitimate development, it would be fair to carry those forward (but make them execute a lot faster).
Outside of that though, most of the improvements in episode II were in fixing mistakes episode I introduced, like the visuals. Nothing that really establishes a solid "sonic 4 identity" that can be carried forward.
Considering the main distinguishing feature of Sonic 4 was the godawful physics, they'd be better off taking what elements worked in episode II and using them elsewhere rather than trying to continue under the Sonic 4 identity.
Episode I would be a passable mobile spin-off (as originally intended) but sucked as a multi-platform mainline release. Episode II is phenomenal no matter how you look at it, genuinely a banger.
I feel like I am the only person who liked these games. I can obviously see why they were hated because of the name mostly but the games were fun to me. Especially part 2 where they fixed a lot of the original issues.
The games are alright. The problem is that they called it Sonic the Hedgehog 4, making it being compared and expected to live up to the genesis games. It also was very short and copied a lot from the Genesis games. If it was released as Sonic the Portable as it was meant to be originally, it would get a lot less hate. Yet Sega was Sega and got greedy. It failed to live up to the name it was given and was punished for it.
Episode II was OK but still imo the biggest issue with Sonic 4 was that you would spam the homing attack to kill badnicks and reach higher parts of the level, instead of using actual skilled platforming like in the Genesis/Mega Drive games, a point not really mentioned in this video. It's fun for what it is though. I tend to agree with Cybershell: Sonic Mania was the true Sonic 4
Way too mid
Sonic 4 ep1 wasn't bad. Sonic 4 ep 2 was better.
I like sonic 4
When you realize sonic superstars is The true sonic 4

@SonplaysMinEcraft "mid too" I wouldn't really say sonic 4 is mid, I feel like it's straight up just bad while superstars is just mid.
I really wish we got Sonic 4 Episode 3. Episode 2 was a step up in terms of look and story, so episode 3 could've been really special. Also episode 1 was fun with Super Sonic and the first 3 Splash Hill acts are some of Sonic's best levels.
I hear Episode 3 was gonna be done by the people who made the Castle of Illusion remake. And that was a hit.
8:15 huge props to your editing, those transitions were perfect
I think White Park is inspired by Sunset Park from Sonic Chaos, but with snow now, which makes it so unique that it's basically original aside from the boss (which is how I came to this realization)
Sunset park is from Sonic Triple Trouble
I actually remember when Sonic 4 Episode 3 got cancelled. It was pretty devided, because you have one side who were glad this fail cash grab didn't fully take off. Then you have the other side who were mad cause this means we blew our chances on playing as Knuckles, after so long. Hilariously, more people were mad for the fact we blew our chances getting *BLUE SPHERES* again. Luckily, Sonic Mania came around, and both sides were like "we good now."
Fun fact: the ducks had to do the music while Jun Sunoe had to conduct them. That’s why Sonic 4’s soundtrack sounds like quack.
Yeah I just knew you were going to talk about Sonic 4 and I think most people did just because of the recent polls you posted. Kind of like that idea though because it kind of gives us clues as to what you're going to do next and helps us prepare for it.
Back then I would have been happy to see there be an episode 3. I had initially enjoyed Sonic 4 episode 1 when it first came out but yes looking back at it I'd say it was just okay. I did enjoy Sonic 4 episode 2 when that came out and it's definitely better than the first episode but yeah I think it ran its course looking back at it. I mean there's not really anything new that could have done with Sonic 4 episode 3 besides just add knuckles which isn't new. They would just be following the pattern of what they already did before with the classic Genesis series.

Bro Sonic 4’s music is actually good
My personal favourite is Sky Fortress Act 2
Some music is good Yeah.
I'm tired of pretending it's not. go to any Superstars OST and the comments will all be 6 months old and have only bad things to say unless it's one of the small handful you can immediately tell were from Tee Lopes. Jun wasn't even the only composer besides Tee Lopes but if people can't immediately tell, they get real biased real quick because that's the popular thing to do.
12:00 Oh wow, I had no idea about this! Nice detail. :)
This is the game or 06 that people will constantly tell Sonic fans that these are the 2 games that killed the franchise over and over and over again to the point that it gets tiring yknow its coming when you hear."Oh yeah, well, at least my company didn't make 06nor sonic 4".
Downfall started with Adventure 2
it's so fucking annoying especially because 06 is actually really good, it's just got REALLY bad physics. i dont think it's what killed the series at all, what killed the series was SEGA rushing sonic team and making them crunch and then also the marketing they did for a while in the 2010s with the edgy humor and all of that dumb shit 🙄 they were actively killing their own brand. it was nothing to do with the games Lol
12:32 I think on the mobile version of Sonic 4 Ep. 1, there's a worse version of Super Sonic jumping up towards the camera.
If I remember correctly, this version had it where, at the very last frame of the animation of him jumping towards you, it'll switch to a still png of him glowing & shifting the opposite way the original animation had him going before abruptly switching to the worse png.
I may be remembering it wrong tho
Edit: Also, on the mobile version of Sonic 4 Ep. 2, the characters had static parts of models instead of fully animated expressions like the console versions. Just wanted to note that
sonic 4 is my favorite sonic game it was a best great underrated sonic game to me it wasn't bad disappointing game to me
Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit, also known as Sonic 4, is one of the greatest fan games to ever be made. It sticks true to the authenticity of the main games while also remaking everything that made the original Triple Trouble so goo- *wait what do you mean that's not what we're talking about?*

16:57 when I first saw this I thought of the stage 2 boss of contra for some reason
It's funny that Sonic 4 Episode 2 purposely left the good ending scrapped so that Episode 3 can continue off where the previous episode ended. Unfortunately, this resulted in a nonstop Time Loop between Sonic CD and both Sonic 4 games, going from Sonic CD 1993, Sonic 4 Ep. 1, Sonic 4 Ep. 2, and to Sonic CD 2011, then back to Sonic 4 Ep. 1, and repeat.
I don’t mind only playing as Sonic in the games that have a good story. The games that don’t have a good story/ want to tell multiple stories I love to have different characters to play as for DIFFERENT STORIES
Who cares about the story
In retrospect, these supposed continuations of the 2D games using Sonic's Adventure-onward design is made very awkward by the fact that, very shortly after they came out, Sonic Generations became a thing, and thus Classic Sonic was recognized as his own entity (I guess the prior implication was that Adventure Sonic is how Sonic always was, just that the newer design interprets him differently..... though the Archie comics made Sonic's change in design very explicit and even acted as a plot point).
The fact Sonic 4 episode one getting great review from IGN it's wild 💀
Probably a 6.5 if he talk about the physics and too easy then it would be a fair review with some flaws.
I think Sonic 4 is unironically the best 2D Sonic game ever. I should probably go to a doctor.
If Sonic 4 would've had a 3rd installment, I bet it would be a great redemption game as Episode II was only the tip of the iceberg. At least Superstars is as close to Episode III as we could get, ig
What is that game where you put a lot of tvs running games / videos?
Sonic is an Icon and has never been forgotten, the series is still going today.
I think the title is misleading because this was a video about Sonic 4 and not at all about the series as a whole.
this was one of the few 3d sonic games i played after the classic trilogy, i thought this was amazing when i was younger. now i think this game is okay, it probably didn’t deserve the title as Sonic The Hedgehog 4.

Bringing up Sonic 4 is like bringing up the 4th diary of a wimpy kid movie or Shrek 3, no one wants to remember they exist and it’s a perfect trilogy on all 3 occasions if you just erases those from existence.
This Game needs a Remaster, under it's Intended Name, Sonic The Portable.
it will be a very dumb more from Sega to make a remaster of a hated game in the fanbase and it will also make some confusion for the casuals playing sonic.
I don't think there's a point in that. A remaster isn't gonna fix all it's downsides, no matter how badly we wish it would. On top of that, it's virtually impossible to see Sega do this. Sega is a company, regardless of how caring they are for the community, money comes first and Sonic 4 is not profitable, especially nearly 15 years later with all the negative press on it being out.
Probably yes? With upgrade visual and physics.
jsyk the entirety of the first game's ost is comprised of korg triton presets aside from the tr-626 snare
I didn't think sonic 4 was bad but that was kind of because I was young so I thought anything was good but I think the wii ver still has the best soundtrack

4. Skyline Plant (Chemical plant but its in the sky.
5. Deviled Egghold
The music for sonic 4 sounds like a composter trying to make music for a retro kiddy game, but the composer for sonic 3 and knuckles was trying to make music for an awesome new game for anyone. The sonic games were never aiming to be childish, they missed the whole point.

I think it was my first official Sonic game as a kid ❤️🥺 ALSO THE MUSIC IS FIRE!! I recently bought and played through Sonic 4 Episode 1, it's garbage A
That's essentially what they did with Episode 1...the characters like sonic and the enemies are 3D models, certain parts of the background are also 3d models, then the rest and especially the foreground are flat images previously rendered in some kind of 3D art program pieced together in layers. So mixing those art styles in that way with different lighting sources creates color clashes and ruins the depth perception. Episode 2 on the other hand seems to use shaded 3D models for characters and textured models for everything else including the bosses so it finally looks normal with proper lighting. Episode 2 was better but that's not saying much with how much of a dumpster fire Episode 1 was. This episodic experiment they did not help Sonic's reputation at all but luckily they got things right with Sonic Generations in 2011 which to me still reigns as king of the 3D Sonic games. None of the 3D attempts afterwards capture the level design, pacing, and quality of Generations.

There is absolutely bad stuff on the game
Interesting thing with episode 1's lighting: At some point the horrid cel shading got removed from the mobile version. It still doesn't looks as good as episode 2, as the lighting and shading now come entirely from the textures, but it definitely looks better than the game originally did
Also the music has good composition, it's just the instrumentation that really sucks
I don't think the mobile port ever had the "cel shading" thing-
@@midi_feline oh interesting, I wasn't aware of that but thinking about the phones of the time it makes sense
I always wondered why Sonic 4 was so short, this made the game less enjoyable in my opinion.
i've always shared the opinion that jun senoue shines the brightest in COMPOSING music and LIVE instrumentation/performance, whereas other members of sonic team worked on the actual sounds, particularly on the genesis soundchip. While his compositions for StH4 sound decent, they're bogged down by a very "first time using FLStudio" quality. instead of having proper sound engineers translate his work to sound retro, they might have just left him alone to emulate the genesis soundchip with premade midi sounds, which isn't his specialty. i feel like they also did this for later sonic games with nostalgic flow, like generations and forces, hence the same-y Sonic 1 drumkit.
Honestly sonic 4 would probably be a bit more memorable if it had original zone concepts. I enjoy a playthrough of both games every once in a while. Sega could make a definitive sonic 4 game using the assets and maybe even models from sonic super stars. Potentially even add in some extra end game stuff to fill in the episode 3 area and boom. A complete title just called Sonic the hedgehog 4

I'm the one guy who actually does keep up with all the Sonic mobile games, Sonic Forces Mobile is pretty good. But I don't think these games would have been liked that much more if they were called something else, they'd probably just be considered a disappointing follow up to the Sonic Advance and Rush series
Never been this early..
I am surprised SEGA dropped the ball musically. Even Sonic 1 had decent music theory behind it and each successor improved on that foundation. Instead of synth spam, Sonic 4 could’ve done well with plain old piano and strings in half the stages, and radical rock in the other half
Video idea: upgrading in games
i think they used modern sonic's design because this came out before generations, modern and classic werent really established yet, classic wasnt younger sonic or anything, modern sonic was just sonic
episode 2 snow stage reminds of snow stage from advace 2
11:15 but I love the soundtracks of sonic 4.❤
Blue Sphere is the second best of the Classic Sonic (Sega Genesis + Addons) Special Stages if you ask me.
I still don't like it, but it's at least fair, which neither the second game or Sonic 2 can really say due to poor depth rendering and expectation of memorization respectively, Sonic 1 is just a bit too janky with its Special stages, sitting in 3rd, and Chaotix, which forgot to have anything in its normal levels is amazingly the best for Special Stages, with some REALLY low poly but function 3D graphics, and some fun layouts to navigate.
Funny we had the Advance and Rush games yet all went "FINALLY SONIC 4?????" at the sight of a logo. What we got was the Sonic equivalent of Mighty No. 9.
