No one ever mentions how Metal Sonic is appropriate for a time-travel game with good futures and bad futures because his design is influenced by the Terminator.
I love how the past themes use the sound chip thing for the past themes but the other versions of the songs use proper CD audio to show the past is old. It’s such a weird detail, but it’s so cool.
@@Mewtube-47 Yep, it was a bit of a retcon but one that worked out in their favor! The Yuusei demo build's past used Redbook audio, but it would've taken all the space on the disk for each zone to have 4 unique Redbook audio tracks, which is also why the past music sounds the same for the US release as the US soundtrack was very, VERY rushed and they didn't have time to make the sequencer music match which was an oddity for many years.

@@jujushmoojoo It’s not a theory, Sonic has lasted for days in super before. Also in SA2 when you switch the ring counter goes to 0 and then reloads. Multiple games have either shown Super Sonic without ring counters or Sonic not requiring rings at all.

I know most people objectively like Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles most and I totally understand and see why, but CD just really spoke to me personally with the story, music, aesthetics, and the ambition of the level designs, it has a really special place in my heart :)
Sonic 2 definitely has the smoothest of transitions between Sonic 1 to its successor, especially in terms of level format. The one detriment to the game to me.....has got to be the special stages though. I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE THEM!!!! Sonic CD whilst I'd love to have seen Super Sonic or even a different ability given for collecting all the Time Stones, was greater overall in the experience of collecting said stones or having the options to skip them entirely for the Badnick Machines to achieve same said result. In Sonic 1 you can kind of consider them luck based, however I still felt more in control and when I messed up...I felt it was on me. Sonic 3/Knuckles I felt the same way, probably the easiest of the 4 in my opinion. Sonic CD's was both a mixture of challenging like 2, fairness like 3/Knuckles, & new enjoyable experience accompanied with CD format/style. Overall Sonic 2 is better/best if you want an improved Sonic 1 experience with increased speed and stronger reward for collecting Chaos Emeralds (though I always just used 19, 65, 9, 17 and then 4, 1, 2 ,6 sound test codes to get said reward....cause again.....F* Those Special Stages) Sonic CD overall is better/best in my opinion if you want a mixture of both speed and a funky soundtrack adventure with both JPN/US accompaniments. More grandiose with 4 versions of stages, abilities such as the Super Peel Out & Sonic 1-styled version of the Spin Dash/Attack from Sonic 2. Special Rewards aren't as strong as Sonic 2's, yet the story encapsulated within makes the journey more worthwhile in my eyes. Different strokes for different folks. Sonic 2 would still be an easy 8-9/10 to me, Sonic CD would just be an easy 9-9.5/10 by comparison.
16:19 Toei didn’t work on those american shoes, that was TMS (Tokyo Movie Shinsha), you’ve got your wires crossed there, but TMS did do the “man of the year” short from sonic jam, 5 AoStH episodes and the entirety of sonic X. Aside from those, Freakazoid, Batman and the best looking animaniacs segments, they also did the best tiny toon segments, the first half of the original ducktales series, and many others. I don’t think any American produced shows ever outsourced from Toei, not counting Sonic CD obviously, that’s still a Japanese developed game.
Whats neat though is that Sega owns TMS as well as Marza Animation Planet. As a big Lupin III fan as well as a sonic fan, that just brings a smile to my face. Seeing Marza go from sonic cutscenes to teaming up with TMS for a cgi lupin movie was crazy to me.
I absolutely loved this video. My first of yours and I'm looking forward to viewing the rest. I knew most of this information but you really made it fun.
Also, I don’t think this got mentioned, but collecting all 7 time stones not only gives you the good ending, but also automatically sets every zone to the good future (if you were to travel to it)
My favorite sonic 2 game has gotta be sonic CD. Even though I’m a fan of tails, I still like the music, cutscene, story, animation, new better characters, and the times they get 2 true endings and the past and future functions.
actually, they made a cutscene for the time travel thing not only bc it was a lot cooler than the inmediate boom, but also, with the inmediate boom, the level variant might just not be there and it needs to load in, so the cutscene was made to make it load in correctly and then u can go into it.
This was a really cool video. I’ve actually never played Sonic CD, but I love the music and overall aesthetic of it. Seeing Sonic in it’s infancy is fascinating
Sonic 2 was an updated and improved sequel to Sonic as a character, however Sonic CD was an alternate take and sequel to Sonic 1 specifically. Both games are great though, and please check out the fan made US Past soundtrack by KindMeteorStudios, it's awesome!
I can't believe Lil John's first appearance was in Sonic. You really out did yourself on the research 🤣 18:40 The power of Lil John continues to amaze me 😭
Even though there were 2 different Sonic sequels, Both games introduced characters that have been staples in the Sonic series. And they are: Miles “Tails” Prower Amy Rose and Metal Sonic.
Yep, but Sonic CD has more characters than Sonic 2. :) But I do think Sonic 2 is more better in the gameplay apartment, while Sonic CD had more better in the presentation more. :)
I really only have Sonic CD on my phone. The controls are... wonky at times, but the game is great. If I were to say what the best zone is, it'd be Stardust Speedway. The best level in my opinion is Stardust Speedway act three, for the reason of that you race against Metal Sonic of all people, and it'sthe first time Metal Sonic appeared as a boss. And it's free on mobile phones, along with Sonic 2.
You would have better controls if you have a Bluetooth controller connected to your phone, and I did play some of it though. Didn't actually completed it, but I planned to complete it fully eventually just like Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. :)
The phone version controls very well, I've managed to beat the game, get all of the time stones, even unlocking the extras with the time attack/time trial.
I really like the US version of Sonic CDs music. It is the version I grew up with. The Bad Future's was slightly menacing. Hearing both versions now, I prefer the US special stage music. Also, I think the special stage for Sonic CD makes the most sense logically. If Robotnick had the emeralds/ times stones he would build a fortress to keep them safe, and you would only have a small amount of time to find it, before everything got locked down.
5:25 And I love the blue sphere zones in Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3 & Knuckles - and also Sonic Mania (but they are only bonus stages, not special stages - so you are not seeking out the Chaos Emeralds in Mania).
18:54 Amy if you dig into her backstory more is far more interesting. I love how Origins brought back her Tarot Cards as it gives her more personality than just... "Girl Sonic who likes Normal Sonic who also for whatever reason has a hammer the size of her body that she literally stores in her ass because ✨Hammer Space✨".
@@assbeater level design isn’t the best tbf amazing concept, soundtrack and style tho i also love the cd running animation more. the figure 8 is so cool
@17:20 Come Sonic Heroes, Metal Sonic is not so obedient. Nor cold or lifeless for that matter lol. Too much hatred and anger within it for that! I bet Robotnik couldn't hit the reset memory button fast enough :p.
12:52 So *that's* why the Past music wasn't replaced in the American version of Sonic CD! Due to the Boss and Game Over themes in the US soundtrack being so terrifying, I've only played with the Japanese soundtrack in the 2011 version of Sonic CD (initially its Steam release; I wouldn't mind the 2013 versions of Sonic 1 and 2 on Steam with a single upfront cost and no ads, though I suppose that ship has sailed by now). Plus, the Past themes don't mix that well with the US music.
I will say, as far as CD's Soundtrack goes, I am more of a fan of the JP Version, but I have come to appreciate the US a lot more after giving it a good listen.
Great video, dude really informative, and I love your comedic editing lol Like seriously you got me excited to try these games out, I've never played Sonic 2 or Sonic CD, now I really gotta check them out. You just got yourself a subscriber 👍

I hate the fact you're only at 300 or so subscribers, as a huge sonic fan myself, i love your passion when speaking about this silly franchise, youre AMAZING
I can't tell you how many times I've played through Sonic CD. It may actually be one of my most played through games. The replayability is nearly endless with how many ways you can approach the game. I still have yet to try a "Play Good Future for Every Zone" run, where I destroy the generator in the past, then warp all the way to the good future, and play the entire good future stage (It's honestly rather tedious). With recent releases of Sonic CD, you can change the ost between JP and US. I don't have a particular preference. I have nostalgia for US, but I also really like the JP. I switch it up every now and then. Good video. Informative. You did research. Keep it up!
Yep, you can try and collect every ring in each time zone(tedious but you end up with a supply of extra lives), try and collect all time stones by the 4th area (Quartz Quadrant), or even just blast through the stages as fast as possible (in time attack mode you can get through each level in under a minute, some of them in under 30 seconds). I like Sonic 2 but I didn't see the reduction from 3 levels per zone to 2 as a positive.
Wait, let me get this straight This man with great editing skills amd fantastic humor only had 4 videos and is has a channel that is only a month old?? Dude, you are a god. Keep it up!
The one thing that would have made CD better is a "divining rod" for the Robotnik generators, not unlike the Emerald Radar. It would need to be vague enough to make you have to look, but just precise enough to give you a sense of structure.
I like that the nature and techmology theme gets expanded in CD, the good futures consistently show a stable blending and mutualism between techmology and nature.
Ok you have to agree, the only time you don’t want to get good future is for the zone with metal sonic, because then you don’t get metal sonics iconic epic theme song
@@ZER0LEGEND I like all of Stardust Speedway's music U.S. or Japanese, they all seem to convey a sense of speed and/or urgency, the past and present Japanese version also dive into the jazz vibe the level graphics convey.

8:16 reminds me of "Gary you will eat that food and you're gonna like it"
My boy you gonna take this cutscene
honestly, the idea of making the levels simpler is also seen present in other sonic games (the only two i've played) and I love they did this

Overall Sonic 2 is better/best if you want an improved Sonic 1 experience with increased speed and stronger reward for collecting Chaos Emeralds (though I always just used 19, 65, 9, 17 and then 4, 1, 2 ,6 sound test codes to get said reward....cause again.....F* Those Special Stages)
Sonic CD overall is better/best in my opinion if you want a mixture of both speed and a funky soundtrack adventure with both JPN/US accompaniments. Sonic 2 would still be an easy 8-9/10 to me, Sonic CD would just be an easy 9-9.5/10 by comparison.
so its just the SMB2 situation
yea, but different this time.
Sonic CD is actually my favourite game of all time!

It's kinda bizarre to look back at a time when Japan and USA didn't have the same stuff all the time (like the Famicom)

I loved your video essay, you really did great at talking about what makes both games shine.
Even though I’m a fan of tails, I still like the music, cutscene, story, animation, new better characters, and the times they get 2 true endings and the past and future functions.
elaborate
Good job on this. I can tell it took alot of time and you put your heart in it
This video is very high quality and I didn’t expect to end up watching the whole video. It was entertaining the whole way through.

I just got an ad, and the transition from the video is smooth. Really fits in with this video's satisfying editing style.

U alright there bud?
Gosh thanks for pointing it out I’m dying of laughter now xd
actually, they made a cutscene for the time travel thing not only bc it was a lot cooler than the inmediate boom, but also, with the inmediate boom, the level variant might just not be there and it needs to load in, so the cutscene was made to make it load in correctly and then u can go into it.
I can dream about Sonic Mania with the time travel mechanic in every level. Sonic CD is just amazing. Creating the good future is a delight.
This was a really cool video. I’ve actually never played Sonic CD, but I love the music and overall aesthetic of it. Seeing Sonic in it’s infancy is fascinating
11:14 this also meant that the US release had the JP soundtrack in the past only.
I see your channel going places… I love the formatting of your videos. Keep up the great work 👍
4:52 wrong emerald buddy!
17:30 i wouldnt call him so "lifeless" since he was the pure villain in sonic heroes that made a plan to become the ultimate form and replace sonic
Sonic 2 was an updated and improved sequel to Sonic as a character, however Sonic CD was an alternate take and sequel to Sonic 1 specifically. Both games are great though, and please check out the fan made US Past soundtrack by KindMeteorStudios, it's awesome!
plus fun fact; during the sonic cd time travel cutscenes, nothing from the next time period is actually loaded for most of it's duration.
Ngl Japanese Sonic CD is kinda horrifying because Majin and Game Over

I am halfway through this video and I just subbed. Good stuff!
I can't believe Lil John's first appearance was in Sonic. You really out did yourself on the research 🤣 18:40 The power of Lil John continues to amaze me 😭
Even though there were 2 different Sonic sequels, Both games introduced characters that have been staples in the Sonic series.
And they are:
Miles “Tails” Prower
Amy Rose
and Metal Sonic.
Yep, but Sonic CD has more characters than Sonic 2. :)
But I do think Sonic 2 is more better in the gameplay apartment, while Sonic CD had more better in the presentation more. :)
@@SN64YT Sonic 2 had Tails and a type of Metal Sonic, CD doesn't have more characters
@@SpectacularKorin It introduced Amy Rose in the games in he Sonic series.

@@SpectacularKorin Yes, I am aware.
Its called stardust speedway
@@brub-eo1oj Thanks for reminding me.
Great video man! A loot of awesome information! Makes me wanna go back and play Sonic 2
Cool video! I liked hearing about the history as well as your thoughts on these fantastic games!
12:46 so I can blame these guys for the game over and boss themes in the US, so thanks for giving people nightmares you weirdos!
They were influenced by that one sonic cartoon at the time made, so that's why it sounds creepy.
This guy needs more attenction
His content is great!
When i first watched his first video i tought he had at least 50k+ subs
This guy deserves better
You're right entirely. He deserves way more subs.
Brother, your content was so complete and entertaining I've had no choice to subscribe. Honestly good job on that video!!
Bro I love your edits I subscribed literally just because of them

The IDW comics also held onto the tarot cards thing, which was nice. She uses them to encourage one of the newer characters.
This channel is gonna grow a lot, i'm feeling it. Great video Kiro!

@17:20 Come Sonic Heroes, Metal Sonic is not so obedient.

Too much hatred and anger within it for that!

Very nice video, and a unique type of content for the over-saturated SonicTube videos usually uploaded. Keep growing pal!
After watching a lot of videos recently where the uploader just describes what happens in a game or tv show, and makes very few points, this video was a breath of fresh air with its indepth analysis.
8:52 they could absolutely still make a game like this and it would be rad as hell. Why aren't they making this game??
I hate the fact you're only at 300 or so subscribers, as a huge sonic fan myself, i love your passion when speaking about this silly franchise, youre AMAZING
pretty good video, keep it up Kiro
Quartz Quadrant is the best past theme by far, massive props for using it as the example
3:08

The one thing that would have made CD better is a "divining rod" for the Robotnik generators, not unlike the Emerald Radar. It would need to be vague enough to make you have to look, but just precise enough to give you a sense of structure.
You deserve WAY more subscribers. Keep it up
I like that the nature and techmology theme gets expanded in CD, the good futures consistently show a stable blending and mutualism between techmology and nature.
Ok you have to agree, the only time you don’t want to get good future is for the zone with metal sonic, because then you don’t get metal sonics iconic epic theme song
Except if you play the us version because stardust speedway good future us is very epic
@@superpig2067 yeah
@@ZER0LEGEND I like all of Stardust Speedway's music U.S. or Japanese, they all seem to convey a sense of speed and/or urgency, the past and present Japanese version also dive into the jazz vibe the level graphics convey.
The same way that happened with Super Mario Bros's first sequel.
Yes, pretty coincidental for sonic pretty much hehe :)
