How Much Censorship is in Pokémon?

- Let's talk about the surprisingly high number of censorship in the Pokémon franchise, including the video games, anime, trading card game and more.
1080p 60fps Gameplay recorded and edited by Nintendo Unity. Consider to like, share and subscribe to support the channel.
This video includes the following topics:
- Banned anime episodes (Seizure episode, Beach episode, Jynx episodes, Tauros episode etc.)
- The crimes of 4Kids against the anime community
- Changed trading cards
- The removed Game Corner
- Registeel's offensive hand gesture
- Offensive trainer sprites
- Nidoqueen's animation in Pokémon Stadium
- Rui's changed outfit in Pokémon Colosseum
...and more - Hry
Feels like the censorship for pokemon was always either really needed because of an accident or big difference in culture, or entirely pointless. Never really an in between to me
I'm gonna have to agree.
I agree. Some of it makes sense (the swimsuit episode, anything revolving around milk, etc), but some is just dumb (the handguns being shown sometimes (not like they were used to kill anyone), Tower of Terror, some of the cards, etc)
@@KodyCrimson and it's not like 4kids couldn't censor out the guns. They did it for Yu-Gi-Oh
@@KodyCrimson I mean most people were sensitive after 9/11 they were probably worried about the series being pulled if they aired the episode
Yeah there are the blackfacing ones and miltank milk drink but then theres the jelly filled donut
The weird thing about the Electric Soldier Porygon episode is that the whole Porygon family basically got banned from animation for life because of it, yet Pikachu was the one who caused the sequence with the flashing lights that caused the seizures. To this day, Porygon has only had a few very brief cameos in the anime, while Porygon2 and Porygon-Z have had *zero* anime appearances. Matter of fact, Porygon2 and Porygon-Z's only appearance in animation was a blink-and-you-miss-them cameo in one scene, in one movie.
The thing is, they couldn't exactly ban Pikachu, since even if it WAS Pikachu's fault for causing the offending explosions, it was still an episode centered around Porygon. That doesn't make it "weird" like you claim, they just decided that banning Porygon was the next best compromise they could make. Sure, it's a bit heavy-handed, but they also banned the use of Earthquake and similar moves in the anime for several years at this point after an earthquake devastated part of Japan, and I'd argue that nearly equally as heavy-handed, even if they can't exactly just let am incident like that slide
They couldn't ban Pikachu, so they chose the next big thing. They acknowledge that Porygon didn't do anything wrong.
didn't the writers added the blue and red lights? so they should have banned the writer who added the blue and red light, its their fault not pikachu.
@@pedrosaabedra5653 animators. And, while flashes like that are dimmed nowadays (and prolly then too) they didn't know it could cause such an effect, cuz they were inexperienced with that.
@@outtaideas849 well they should have just drawn normal blown up missiles with smoke, not blue and red flashing lights.

I never minded the original trainer sprites and the uncensored clothing because I feel that young people playing these games not only wouldn't care but also because I don't think a couple of differently colored pixel is gonna make your children perverts or anything like that.

The onigiri censorship is practically the most cringe and unjustifiable thing 4Kids has ever done.
I get why you were upset, but I'm really looking at it a marketing point of view.
Pokemon is especially a show that has been marketed to children. When stuff is marketed to children, relatability is one of the biggest selling points. To keep children hooked on the show, things need to be added that the children are able to resonate with.
That kind of change was made in America. An American child is more likely to relate to someone eating a sandwich than an onigiri.
The belief is that a child would think something along these lines, "wow, they are eating sandwiches for lunch just like I do."
It's cringe worthy as an adult, especially for those who experienced the world. But for children, it's just something that a typical American child would see as a normal part of their life.
And before anyone tries to comment that "I believe that kids should not learn about different things in the world," that would be far from the truth. My point is when something is marketed to children, especially continuously, relatability is a huge selling point.
Hey people can we not localized Pokémon anymore and start watching the original Japanese version so that we can see everything unedited
@@brandan7761 i would be okay with that if at least they changed the onigiri with the food the characters mention. They did half of the job and left it there.

I love that you described the the Pasximian incident as Ash wearing dark face paint. It really shows how much of a stretch banning this episode was.
Maybe they shoulda just had them put masks resembling Passimian's face on instead of causing such a mishap. But then again, putting on black/dark coloured face paint is a Japanese beauty trend, and that's probably why they gave Jynx such skin (damn now I'm imagining Smoochum with gray skin)
@@Idiotic_B_Purcell Pretty sure jinx's face is meant to be like the dark theater mask representing the yokai she's based on, It's a yokai with a massive mouth and dancing abilities that entrance people
it also was banned because it had no plot relevance. in animes, it's cheaper to remove the episode than to just change it. Since there was nothing major that happened, they just pulled it out of circulation
They banned Porygon, but in reality he wasn’t the one who blew up the missiles that caused the seizures and Pikachu was actually to blame for it and not Porygon himself
Trust me, TPC understands it. They've tweeted about it before
Well that's true but people only remember that in an episode with a weird pokemon something bad happened and everyone was mad about that, like if they make an episode and a parent sees that maybe they would get angry or maybe they don't want the topic to constantly be talked about, like how they didn't realize that it wasn't a good idea to flash light quickly in a lot of homes in Japan.
I agree, but it’s better than removing Pikachu from the series.

@@TunaBear64 Honestly, my mind first went to, "how would they animate that."
There was a ton of stuff censored due to 9/11. While it seemed absurdly overly reactionary to scrub any image of the World Trade Center from tons of movies and TV shows, we saw situations like stations refusing to air TV episodes that *didn't* do exactly that. (The prime example being the episode of the Simpons where Homer went to the WTC, while it wasn't pulled from syndication, many stations simply refused to show it again.) Several episodes of Transformer Robots in Disguise weren't aired in the US because they showed buildings being destroyed. The completed Dreamcast game Propeller Arena was cancelled; it was an air combat game that had a level set around a generic skyscraper. Etc.
Beauty and the Beach was only a temporary ban too
Pretty sure the original Mr Mime sprite had him with a cigarette
The guy outside Erika’s gym says he likes it because it’s full of women in the first games but in remakes he says it’s full of women. Fire breather Dick became Richard.

I want to say they edited Team Rocket high on Shuckle juice but idk. They did cut a scene in an ep where Giovanni runs through the desert in a Speedo. And Kukui’s wine was changed to juice. Several times when Ash got slapped it was cut.

If Creepypastas existed as far back as 2001, then the Lavender Town Syndrome rumor may have also contributed to the banning of "The Tower of Terror" due to that episode being about the Pokemon Tower.

The Pokemon trading card game doesn't have as many types that are individually usable as they do in the video games, which causes certain types to get lumped together under one single type, for example: fighting, ground and rock type Pokemon are all printed as the fighting type in the tcg. But poison has had the most confusing history of what type it was made a part of: when the cards were first being printed, they were lumped in with the grass type, such as the one shown in this video. Eventually, the poison type got moved to becoming part of the psychic type (which was the way it was when I started learning how to play the tcg). And most recently, when the new Sword and Sheild sets were printed, they changed it so that poison is now part of the dark type, giving poison the record for the most number of types that have represented it in the tcg with a grand total so far of three!

Many of the censorships are stupid, but I think Beauty and the Beach is pretty fair lol
James got some bahonkadonks tho
that Beauty on the Beach episode was shown in Canada YTV before. I remember seeing it back then. It there is an English dub for that episode.
1:27 this is completely stupid
This brings up an important question, if wearing dark face paint to imitate an animal/Pokémon is wrong because its blackface, shouldn't the military be banned for using dark face paint to imitate foliage?
You should bring it up with the U.S. Army, they'll ban the practice straight away.
@@Zorro9129should an peppa pig episode banned because pedro pony makes whiteface to become a crown? same does to mario’s clown costume?
Loving the use of Colosseum music!

7:12 Was Koga’s Ninja Trick seriously so bad that it deserved to be censored for this video to avoid demonetization???
…WHAT?
Yes
It was a swaz
Yes, because that symbol resembles something so bad and controversial that just saying something directly related can get you banned on CZcams
and as well the country I’m currently (Israel)
DarkFish YT well I am not afraid, swa- **gets assasinated**
CZcams moderators aswell as you or me are watching the video and as soon as that shows up uncensored the video is down
Who wants a jelly filled doughnut? 🍙
6:29 I had to stare at this for the longest to even notice he has a cigar. The people who censor these games are the hardest working puritans on earth.
I was trying to depict what change there was in that too, thanks for saying, I would've never figured that out
Bro thank you I was trying to scroll through the comments for the longest time to figure out what was the change
Oh thats what it was!!!
The Onigiri opening amused me more than it should have
U forgot about the Censorship In the First episode in the First season, Where Misty Slaps Ash in the face for Being Fished with Pikachu
I'm curious as to why that got removed.
@@aura7342
because, for some reason, G-rated-level animated violence isn't allowed in the US, despite stuff like Tom & Jerry and Looney Tunes airing around the same time long after being made. CZcamsr "ABrandonToThePast" uploaded a video with more examples of anime censorship (alongside the same game censorship reports). It's an interesting video to say the least
Opening up with Mirror B's theme, I approve! I disapprove censoring Rui's skirt. It covers the same amount has Misty's denim shorts(5:44).
1:38 you misspelled skyscraper, replacing the k in sky with c instead.
The song.. The theme of the battle vs the enemy dancer on pokemon colosseum, a little masterpiece.
Registeel:Salut my good frend lets do a fight.
Nintendo:YOU WON'T HEAD ANYWHERE *holding a ban hammer*
Western censorship can be crazy sometimes.
An episode being temporarily censored because a Pokemon destroys a skyscraper, after 9/11, makes sense. An episode being temporarily censored because "tower" is in the name doesn't make sense!
6:52 Kinda sounds like Cait Sith’s theme.
It kind of makes sense that they banned the Porygon episode because of seizures. Though I suppose that they could’ve also just run a warning beforehand that kids with epilepsy shouldn’t watch. Not sure how I feel about them banning an episode where Ash dresses up as an actual monkey.
For real, asumming that dressing as a monkey is racist makes it even more racist
@@ivan422 EXACTLY
Agreed that one was dumb (even if there's a history behind why it's banned
@@ivan422 I guess someone who was anti-furry thought that episode promoted the furry community. And that's also a dumb reason for banning a Pokemon episode.
Even if they put the warning on I doubt the result would've changed that much or even at all.
3:35 so this is where smg4 got that character to his series
2:27 In 1945 the nazis unveil their latest creation to combat the allies...Registeel
the porygon episode got banned for 4 months so that the animators had more time to animate and reserch the speed of the frames
@@smallvixenamberkitty1967 Yeah but you know! Its the plot armored rat that they have as a mascot, so nothing can happen to it
@@smallvixenamberkitty1967 to be fair think of it this way, if I say "the pikachu episode" what episode do you think of? Maybe pikachus goodbye, if I say "the porygon episode" you think of the episode with the seizires; its not that he caused the seizures more that he reminds people of the seizures.
I AM SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS GOLD IMMEDIATLY
