    There are at least 14 different Pokemon trainers in the Pokemon franchise, and each one has a class. In this new video series we're going to go over and explain EVERY Pokemon class by the generation they were introduced. This video covers the first two generations of games, the Gameboy era of Pokemon! Some classes are straightforward and have obvious rules like the Psychics use Psychic-type pokemon... But others are significantly more interesting or have... troubling history. I of course mean no offense at all with any of the words I say in this video. But I DO mean offense with this next statement: racism is for poopoo heads.

      "Skinheads" *is* just referring to them being bald (or, more accurately, shaved). The Japanese word doesn't have the Neo-nazi association that it has in English, so translating it back into English as "skinhead" is not exactly accurate.

    • @onijester56
      @onijester56 Před 2 lety +30

      "Skinhead" is a reference to their being bald, and that's where the use of the name derives from...but given the real-world source of that name it's literally not "just".
      The way to think of it is that the "common insult" is 'Cueball'. "Skinhead" is a specific (racist/white-supremacist) type of 'Cueball'...which kinda seems like the opposite of what most people would probably assume. But America loves doing things the stupid way.

    11:40 The Pokémon used by Poke Maniacs aren't choosed out of nowhere, all of them are from the Monster Egg Group. Many of them are based on dinosaurs and kaijus like Tyranitar (Godzilla), Nidoking (Baragon), Rhydon (very kaiju like), and Tyrantrum (is a T.Rex, of course), indicating there are fans of kaiju movies or dinosaurs enthusiasts. Not only that but many of them give hints on how to get rare Pokémon such as Lapras in G/S/S, and all of them stop appearing after gen 3 came out, sugesting there are the first Pokefans who outgrew the series when Pokémon became less popular overtime but still love the first generations, in other words there are the in universe Genwunners.
    19:25 There are based on itako, blind seers of north Japan which are said to go through a hard training to channel their powers.

    Some of the trainer classes, besides the "boss-battle" ones, have developed advanced AI and/or more competitively-viable Pokémon too, like Ace Trainers and Veterans. On the flipside, some juvenile classes have less of a clear AI, one that is closer to a generic wild Pokémon choosing its moves at random. These differences in battle ai are even present in a few post-game battle facilities.
    Come to think of it, I have *never* found a detailed source explaining the trainer AI systems. There are apparently IQ values in the code that range from 0-255. If this is true, then Cynthia would undoubtedly be very close to the top.

    The Rocker class has a cool sprite in FireRed and LeafGreen! I’m a little bummed this class didn’t stick around. The class is called “Denki Group” in Japanese, which is apparently a reference to a music group in Japan. Maybe the reason this class never returned is because the reference is dated now? Ah well.
    For some reason, the Tamer is a class that tends to use Pokémon exclusive to one version of the game. That explains why they use Golduck and Sandslash - Sandslash is even a counterpart to Arbok. Maybe the idea is that, as Tamers, they’re in possession of “rare” creatures? I dunno. The Collector class from Ruby and Sapphire onwards also uses version exclusive Pokémon, and I think that makes total sense for them.

I can't be an ace trainer because even though I like having a balanced team, I'm pretty bad at Pokémon battling against other people. But would I be one of the monotype classes? I'm not sure. Oh man, I’ve been wanting to do a casual essay on the trainer classes for years, so this is pretty awesome. In fact I was even thinking about it again recently because I was playing FireRed for the past few months and asked myself “Why are Bird Keepers almost always in the mid-to-late game? Surely trainers like that would be found in all stages? It’s not like bird Pokémon are exclusively power houses?” And other questions that may or may not deserve analysis.
    Another interesting aspect of the Ace Trainers worth talking about is that they’re most like the player character. They tend to have more type coverage, some of them talk about being League contenders, and most of them are found in the mid-to-late games usually before and in Victory Road.
    Also perhaps a little too much use of the G-word there. Like maybe once for context and then calling them by their proper name would’ve been more appropriate.
    Anyhow, happy about This series, can’t wait to see more of it because it has been a special interest of mine for a while. Probably started when I played Colosseum and was completely baffled by the completely generic non-specialized nonsense “trainer classes” like “fun old guy” and “bandana guy” and “glasses man”

I would also breed and trade fossil Pokémon a lot.

    Ya gym leaders and rivals are self explanatory, gyms hire certain archtypes to populate the gym but need to focus around the main type, if you're smart and well leveled they can be beaten, each leader has an ace and a signature TM move to raise the stakes.
    Rivals will have a mix of pokemon and challenge you at key moments, usually it's their own selection of the best pokemon of that region and the starter that beats you.
    Team rocket I found very interesting when researching, there are a lot of poison types and rattatta/zubat, annoying trashy pokemon they found, but also some fighting types and maybe a Hypno. Most are related to crime or the general toxic evil theme. Magma and Aqua however focus more on their specific type or mascots, Camerupt and Sharpedo
