The Best and Worst Trainer Classes from Each Generation of Pokémon

  • The Pokémon are important, sure, but what about their human allies? We run across hundreds of different trainers every time we go on a journey, and each generation only adds more every time, so let's see which of those trainers are worthwhile and which ones we'd be better off leaving in the dust...

The point of the Bug Maniac is that they're Bug Catchers who never grew out of their bug catching phase, so there is some differentiation. Sure they didn't have to make this class considering their team structure isn't always stronger, but it does expand on the world of trainer classes in a unique way.

15:05 To my understanding, Macro Cosmos is the conglomerate organization that in one way or another manages a great deal of the businesses in the Galar region. This includes managing/running the Pokemon League, hence why league staffers look the same as Macro Cosmos employees, they are themselves technically Macro Cosmos employees too. They sort of joke about this in the series of elevator battles where you face off against a bunch of Macro Cosmos employees who will specify the various subdivisions of Macro Cosmos that they work in. If you do the optional Poke Jobs stuff you also learn a bit more about the various divisions.

3:35 You should have mentioned that ORAS' Aces can make use of Surf too. That gives the World a more coherent feel in my book. They are also among the few that add surprising Pokémon to their teams when rebattled several times. (If you Shiny Hunt on the Water that will happen to you more times than you care to admit, trust me.)
4:27 The Hex Maniacs (or just Witch) are a very odd trainer class in hindsight. Why? Look at the Gen 3 Spritework for the class. Now look at Mismagius. These similarities are too plentiful to be a mere coincidence.
5:03 I don't like the Pokéfans. Or more concisely I dislike the male Pokéfans. Why? More often than not have a Child with them. In the "Battle Sphere" and nowhere else? Where is their Child in the "actual world"? It can't be too much to ask to just set up a Child Sprite next to them... (They could even nicely pair them up with Poké Kid next to them: "You may have beaten Daddy, but I am stronger than him!")
6:50 By the way: The Pokémon Ranger Movie can be watched for free on Pokémon TV. (At least for the rest of the month.)
8:35 Probably because they look almost exactly the same like last Gens "Experts" too.
9:34 According to that logic all Amateur Sports Leagues in _our_ World are redundant too.
9:48 Just one City? That's just false. Okay, I know that the Village Bridge has seen a fair share of Floodings but I didn't thought that its existence has been washed away that bad...
11:58 That's an accurate description for Nobility as a whole though.

The thing you need to realise is that certain classes are actually mistranslations of their japanese names or are alterations of current classes.
what we know as the burglar is known in Japan as a "Post-fire Burglar" as over there, Break-ins and robberies more commonly happen immediately after arson, after the building is abandoned.
The reason the bug maniac and bug catcher exists is the same reason for the veteran and ace/cooltrainer to exist. it acknowleges the older fanbase (as pokemon was based on Tajiri's love for entomology and bug collecting)
Surfers weren't introduced until Alola (Despite water routes being introduced forever ago) because Hawaii puts a big emphasis on surfing as a rite of passage.
The bandit is specifically based on a criminal outlaw from a western movie, including the rough quality of life, living and camping in the middle of nowhere.
Before you complain that some classes reuse older concepts (Like bug maniacs, bandits, veterans etc) you have to understand what they are referring to by looking at the english translation of their names from other regions.

The joggers I remember not learning about until accidentally running past one when playing my DS on vacation where timezone was different than I was used to.. and it was obviously disappointing since I was already like a gym and a half stronger than I was meant to be for that area.. honestly the time sensitive trainers should scale just in case, would be cool to go to an early route and still have a random dude that is a challenge because you weren't awake at the right time until a later date
The Unova sports trainers.. god I remember not even knowing some could be battled since.. sometimes the areas were closed.. or only 1 of the trainers in the BIG STADIUM was a battler and so accidentally skipped them since.. large empty area made up most of it xD
I never thought of PLA as part of gen 8 until now.. so gen 8 really has a variety eh? A more standard game that finally actually focused on the gym stuff and then a game that diverged and gave us some open world gameplay..

Since bug catching is a stereotype for hobbies of young japanese kids, especially boys, and is the origin story of pokemon, I guess you could argue that Bug Maniacs symbolize those adults that never let go of their childhood obsessions. Which is kinda ironic, considering how many adults still play pokemon, albeit less frequently.
Anyways, best trainer is that one dude with 6 magicarps in every game. I admire the resolve and await the day they show up with 6 gyarados (or however you spell the english name).

The region-specific trainer classes are pretty niche so it makes sense that they would be in their perspective games, however, you can't overlook the Ace and Veteran trainers, because they are the best of the best (relatively speaking) so if you're facing them, it means you're far into the game.

Just thought of this with you mentioning how ace trainers sometimes have starters, how is this the case?
From what we know every trainer is given a starter, so are we to assume you, your rival and a couple of other trainers are the only ones who like them? Suggesting starters are the least liked pokemon in the pokeworld as most people dump them? Or should we consider that different places give different starters, meaning these ace trainers are all from your home town too?
So many questions from one little thought...

But he was arguably the most annoying one simply because he shared my name. Though I feel like his dialogue wasn't up to par either. At least once Emerald came out, there wasa new Bug Maniac around; as well as Pyramid King Brandon! Who was even awesome in the anime too

The whole point of the chateau is to work your way up the ranks to get a new title and the titles are only used in the chateau.
