Much so.

Also, the Pokemon there have, in the City, specific
personality (that players of the games will forever remember, in
fact), so WHY do these specific pokemon have those specific
personalitys and quirks? Thats just the first
specific Topic for a video i can think up.
Basically every parent in the Pokemon world is either clairvoyant, knowing what type of Pokemon their kids will use in the future, or super controlling, making sure sure they grow up using only one type of Pokemon.
Or Maybe you're legally obligated to change your name after you become a gym leader
Fun fact! It's a not so commonly held belief that what you name your child can actually affect what kind of person they will be, or what kind of life they will lead!
Whose to say these people don't change their names? It would be funny as heck for someone to be like "wow I love grass types, gonna name myself grass real quick"
In the anime we did see Brock’s dad was the original rock type gym leader, and Misty’s sister took over the gym when she was with Ash. And I know the animes and games aren’t connected, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s some sort of “Passing the torch” with each generation of the next kid
It could just be a crazy coincidence, too. My name is George, I tend to prefer Rock types, my mom and I share a fascination with geology, and my father was a construction worker when I was young. They actually planned on naming me 'Alan,' but my sister, who was three at the time, threw a fit because she wanted my name to be "George." Lucky roll of the dice, i suppose.

Here's an excerpt from the interview:
"When it came to naming Sabrina I decided to name her after a woman I recalled from my junior high school days ... who was very active in school affairs, and who assigned a number of us to interview prominent people in the media. In addition, the woman's name had a New England ring to it. Some years later I recalled the woman's name was not Sabrina, but actually Sabra Holbrook."

I thought Marnie’s whole name thing was cus it sounded like “meanie”, which is a contrast to how she acts in game (being really kind and helpful), kinda like how you said Piers’ name contrasted his punk aesthetic
So this inspired me to come up with some names for the Gym Leaders and Elite 4 of my own Pokemon region.
I'm thinking Bormal, Blyinga, Byre, Brass, Barry, Bhosta, Barka, Bighting, Bectrica, Beela, Bsychic, and of course, Brock 2

As far as I know, Melony's name is just melon, because Japan relates melons with cold, and I suppose that because in Zelda BOTW melons are used to make cold food.
Idk if its a Japan thing. Whenever I think of melons I think of cooling off on a hot summer day hy eating so cool crisp melon.
the melons aren't really a "cold" food in botw rather they are something juicy to cool you off hence why they are found in gerudo
I am now confused about japan, melons grow in the summon so WHY
its mostly likely a reference to the asian wintermelon. as well as the fact that melons are associated with fertility and she is a mother and has a very round appearance

Roark... Pronounced R-ORE-K. He’s a miner, he mines ore, ergo, Roark.
It could also be meant to be like ROAR- K, because both of his Pokémon are dinosaurs.
Also kinda sounds like rock if you pronounce it a little weird
G-ORE-DY
My mother's maiden name is Roark, and they pronounce it as ROW-ark. Probably because we have the southern twang on it, but I always mispronounced Roark as a kid because of it.

Yes!
Bianca and Cheren are names white and black in different languages

I think Korrina's design being based on a roller-skater might be a reference to roller-derbies, a contact sport played in roller rinks where one player, "the jammer" scores points by lapping the opposing team who try to hinder them by attempting to restrain or block them.
But designs are probably for a different video
That would make sense. Lockston has a roller derby cougar fakemon in his Kaskade region. It may have been fighting- steel. I don't remember exactly.
the reason why Allister's name is Onion in Japanese is probably because of Oni, a kind of yōkai, demon, ogre, or troll in Japanese folklore. basically something spooky and ghastly. just like ghosts. ghost type gym leader.

@@CocoLocoToco demons are often portrayed as spirits.
I've always felt like "Janine" was a pun on the word "Genin", which is a rookie ninja, Janine being the daughter and apprentice of Koga, the master.

"Roman Mythology is just Greek Mythology with several asterisks."
tl;dr: Well yes, but actually no. It's not nearly as simple as that.
Rome had a distinct mythology of its own long before they syncretized their religion with that of the Greeks. They had a habit of doing this thing where when they conquered a region and saw similarities between the Roman gods and local gods, they would sort of synthesize them together. It's why Mercury (the god as well as the planet) isn't just associated with trade and travel, but also with knowledge, craftsmanship, and creativity; traits he picked up when the Romans synthesized him with the Celtic/Germanic sun god Lugh (or about a hundred other names if you want to dive into that; I don't) and with Odin, of all gods.
Venus is an especially interesting case, as she seems to have occupied more of a mother/nature goddess role before syncretism with Aphrodite from Greek religion seems to have somewhat overshadowed that. Aphrodite herself wasn't native to Greece, but it seems she was sort of transmitted to Cypress from the Phoenician traders who worshiped a goddess of love and war known as Astarte, who in turn is descended from Inanna, the Babylonian goddess of love, war, political power, and various crafts who they called "The Queen of Heaven and Earth."
This happened a lot in the ancient world. You would get a pseudo-state religion with a pantheon that could be expressed myriad different ways in local folk religions until you got a thousand different versions of what can seem at first blush to just be half-a-dozen, maybe a dozen deities. Additionally, when two cultures wanted to ally with each other, and saw similarities between one god or goddess and another, they would syncretize their religions as a way of burying the spiritual hatchet. Of course, it's even more complicated than the slightly less abridged version I've laid out here, but suffice to say: Roman mythology is not, in fact, just Greek mythology with several asterisks. It's actually a lot cooler and more interesting!
@@Yggdraseed you just have this in your back pocket or something?

Cilan, Chili, and Cress have a really cool etymology in Japan. Their names are Dent, Pod, and Corn, which are all types of corn, continuing the plant names, however, if you put the prefix tri on each one, they become a seperate word, Trident, Tripod, and Tricorn (a type of hat) which is because tri means three and they're a set of three gym leaders.

I think melonie is actually based off "melody", like a song related word, because her main user is lapras, when it gmaxes it has connection with melody, the lines, and the gmax move, "gmax resonance" i think.
I always thought Milos name was a reference to silos, things you store crops in. Because he works on a farm and uses wooloo, a livestock animal
Edit: forgot to mention that since stereotypical farms grow crops, it would tie back into the grass type
Another point for Valerie's name is it's similar to "Valkyrie", which are beings that appear in nordic myth.
Also for Raihan "golden rain" could be stretched to be a sandstorm if you consider sand as a golden brown colouration, and "golden chain" could be interpreted as a chain of succession
I love all the work that was put into these names, and the work you put into decoding them! I've been working on a small Pokemon project myself, mostly just for fun, and I have the Gym leaders all worked out, although their names don't have as much thought put into them. I also have some Gym puzzles, although a lot of them feel fairly similar of "Push thing to place to make thing happen"
First is Simona, the Normal gym leader. Her name comes from Simple, another word for Normal. I typically see Normal as a stand in for Change or Potential, seeing as Pokemon like Porygon can change their type. She runs the local Trainer's school, and is often the first challenge Trainers face. Her gym consists of answering questions about battles, like how Held items work, and then you have to do a battle against a trainer showing that idea off, like their Pokemon holding a berry. She gives the Knowledge badge.
Second is Amy, or Amythest, the Rock leader. Her name comes from the gem Amythest. She's similar to Roark in that she's a miner, although she mines for precious gems like her namesake. She's known for being fairly happy-go-lucky too! Her gym puzzle involves pushing minecarts along tracks to weight down platforms so that you can continue.
Third, we have Rainer, the Water leader. His name comes from Rain, which is also his battle strategy. He's an older leader, known for being very traditional, and being an avid fisherman. He believes in stillness and patience, like fishing on a still lake. His gym puzzle involves rotating aqueducts to power waterwheels, opening gates. He gives the Tide badge.
Fourth we have Delilah, the Grass leader. Her name comes from the flower Lilac, or from Lilly. She's the leader of the Pokemon rangers, and talks elegantly, or uses "Flowery" language. I'm not sure of her puzzle yet, but I'm thinking rolling large logs to make paths. She also gives the Grotto badge.
Fifth is Ace, the Flying leader, coming from the term for a talented Airplane Pilot, Ace, although he isn't a pilot. Instead he's an Acrobat who constantly wears a wingsuit, and is known for being quite over the top. His gym is basically a vertical wind tunnel, with a fan at the bottom that you can turn off and on with switches to rise to the next floor or slowly fall down, so you can navigate the floors. He gives the Horizon badge.
Sixth is Nina, the Dark leader. Her name comes from Ninja, as she is one, and I always thought Dark was more fitting for a Ninja than Poison, as Ninjas are known for moving through the shadows. Her gym is a trick Ninja dojo, requiring you to find sliding or rotating panels in the walls to continue. She gives the Shade badge.
Seventh is Bruce, the Fighting leader, coming from Brute, or even the fighter Bruce Lee, although he's more MMA. His gym challenge is simple, it's a gauntlet of trainers, similar to Norman's, allowing you to choose various challenges, but there's a Caviat, you can't heal between fights until you get to Bruce himself (So you can prepare for the final battle against him). No tricks, no gimmicks, just an endurance test.
Finally, Friseur the Ice leader, coming from the word Freeze. He's a cold-hearted and callous mountaineer who grew up in the icy heights. He's so disinterested he has his back turned to you the entire fight! His gym puzzle is navigating icy one-way slopes to climb a massive mountain, similar to other ice puzzles. Upon defeat, he (Begrudingly) gives you the Frost badge.
Fun fact about Candice's name: in Latin, the word 'Candidus' means 'white', which is the colour of snow and ice. So her name actually means 'white, pure/clear ice'
Yes, please try and fine whatever excuses you can into making your precious gen 4 ice gym leader pun look not terrible.
My name is candice, and a lot of websites say it means ‘white fire’. I don’t know the language comes from so I just believed it, but I’m kind of sad it doesn’t mean that. Lol it’s a cool meaning.
Roman Mythology is basically: “Nice gods bro, we’ll just borrow them for a few decades”
I can't believe you didn't mention Bede just straight up being "Beet" because of beetroots, and that his colourscheme is beetroot coloured. Also I like the Onion thing for Allister not just because of the Japanese "oni" thing someone mentioned before, but onions really do have layers, and Allister is wearing a mask.

Me: Haha, wulfric sounds kinda like arctic
Huh, I never thought of that.
Another point for Valerie’s name is the valkyries from Norse Myth
The dark type Gym leader, could be a play on Peter, Spyro’s original name when he was much more of a punk (we’re talking near Bart Simpson levels before he was tone WAY down for the game) in the OG Spyro 1 from 1998
Fantina is also French in the English Localizations, so her name being French makes sense.
Wulfric's name, specifically the "wulf" part could be in reference to the wolf of nordic mythology fenrir and is seen as a symbol of strength and stamina, which you kinda need to endure the cold. Fenrir is also known for their huge size and based on his appearance in the game and anime I would say Wulfric fits the bill nicely
"Wul" can also come from WULrus since his beard looks like Wulrus tusks

Paldea Gym Leaders:
Katy: Bug-type, name comes from the katydid. Also similar to her Japanese name, Kaede, which means maple.
Brassius: Grass-type, comes from Brassica napus, the Latin name for the very unfortunately named rapeseed plant. His Japanese name, Colza, is another word for the plant.
Iono: Electric-type, from Genus Chionanthus (fringetree), ion, and 'I 'unno', an informal way of saying 'I don't know'. Her Japanese name, Nanjamo, comes from 'Nan ja mon ja', a name given to a large tree that grows in a particular place, which literally means 'what is it?' The tree this usually refers to is the Chinese fringetree.
Kofu: Water-type, comes from kombu, edible kelp. His Japanese name. Haidai, is just the Chinese word for kelp.
Larry: Normal-type, from spotted laurel (which is what his Japanese name 'Aoki' means) and salaryman, his job.
Ryme: Ghost-type, from rhyme (because she's a hip-hop artist) and her Japanese name, Lime.
Tulip: Psychic-type, from the flower and also from lipstick because she's a cosmetics designer. Her Japanese name is just Lip.
Grusha: Ice-type, it's the Russian word for pear. I guess because Russia has lots of snow, and he's a snowboarder? And the word kind of looks like slush, as in partially melted snow?
I looooove when you say Jazmines name it’s hilarious 🤣
May I suggest that Grant was named after Alan Grant from Jurassic Park, since both of his Pokémon are dinosaurs?
Good point
Man they should’ve changed Liza’s name to “Levi” so it would’ve been Levi Tate
That would've been so clever!

I think Piers’ name works as a reference to Peter in other ways too! In the game he actually helps you out a lot more than you might expect from a punk, especially near the end (I won’t give specifics due to spoilers). He also holds quite firmly to his beliefs, much like Peter. He’s the only gym leader in Galar that refuses to dynamax his pokemon, even when he has the opportunity to, because he believes in being strong without having to rely on that.
Also, it works with Marnie since, as you pointed out, their town is close to the sea. So, it’s like a pier you would find on the shore.
3:58 that was a sucker punch of memories

Basil...
Basilisk

20:13 with the Brass mentioning…. Now we have Brassius (Paldean grass type gym leader)
I think part of Milo’s name is based on silos, those buildings that store grains like for farming since his gym is in Turrfield which has farming stuff
Everytime you disagree with how he pronounces a gym leader’s name, take a shot.
we're not disagreeing with the way he's pronouncing them, he is DEFINATELY pronouncing it wrong, at least for some of them, especially byron specifically, he really said it in 1 syllable....
@@terrariaskeletonpre1.0.39 Yes, thank you! I was wondering if someone else noticed this as well. Byron is an Irish name, and it is definitely not pronounced as one syllable.

21:24 Well, in portuguese "Mar" its "Sea" english, so i think there is a connection there. But i do not know about the "Lon" in his name.
The lon is just a reference to the marlin, a fish.
I always thought Melonie was named after melody, like a song. Especially because of Lapras's gmax move.

Allister could also be a reference to "Sinister", as the ghost type is often portrayed almost as dark as the dark type.

Uhhh.... couldn't Piers just come from the word "pierce?" His hair looks like it has thorns, and the spikes on his clothes and all? Seems fitting enough. I think you might have dug too deep and missed the target on that one. Interesting etymology lesson though.
Not to mention the town he's from is literally named after the word "spike" in English and Japanese lol
you are smart
So piers sings....
And has piercings.
Piers = pierre = peter = rock (also brock’s name in french)
He rocks
Can’t wait for another rock gym leader who is also in a band
along with that their is a Pop Punk band called "pierce the veil" which are the same genre of music that piers is into? might be a reach aha
Also: Spikemuth...
Interesting detail for Fantina. The “Fant” at the beginning of her name is also the beginning of the French word fantôme which means... ghost.
So...
Phantom.
Given the fact that she's French, fantôme was probably the intention there.
@@TheHammerGuy94 I know he mentioned phantom but he didn’t mention the French equivalent.

Wow, this video just showed me how great the designs for the Gym Leaders are even in older generations. Though some are stronger than others, I really like all their designs
I thought Tate and Liza were “Tantalize” due to their psychic speciality
An interesting fact that he brought up about them is that their names put together make the word levitate. I find this to be quite interesting because their Pokemon that they use, Lunatone and Solrock, have this ability and are immune to ground type moves; taking this a step further, in emerald, they add a Claydol (which also has this ability) and Xatu (which is part flying type, and therefore also immune to ground) to their team as well.
@@matthewkuscienko4616 wow... Just wow. Liza and Tate makes Levitate

You didn't mention the fact that "Milo" means literally "Apple" in greek, and he trains an Appletun, so, yeah, apple, plant, Appletun, that's kind of it
It isnt Appletun specifically
Depending on version it's one of Applin's evolutions
But the apple point still stands
And it sounds like “silo” because he’s a farmer
Bea could also be a play on Muhammed Ali's/Cassius Clay's famous line "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee"
Marnie's name could also be chosen because of the word "mourn" something you do after losing a loved one.
As for Piers, it's a bit tricky. Since these are just theories or speculation, Piers (from Peter)
could refer to Saint Peter's death as he was crucified - hence he was "pierced" through his feet and hands?
Anyway, great video and very entertaining!
Keep up the good work!
