Athletic Club in Bilbao are famous for their policy of only fielding players that have a connection to the club or the Basque region they reside. Having such a policy promotes qualities some modern clubs neglect, like loyalty and service. And as an acknowledgment of other players and clubs which subscribe to these qualities, they have set up their One Club Man Award.

As an Athletic Club supporter from Bilbao, thanks for the promotion and the kind words of the video. Just one thing I think is relevant to mention, regarding the club's philosophy, is that you did not get the region quite right. The region that the video highlights in red is the Basque Autonomous Community, one of Spain's 17. However, the region that forms the Basque Country comprehends not only this Autonomous Community but also Navarre (the one to our right, where for instance Raúl García and Muniain are from) and a piece of land to the north that belongs to France as well, called Pyrénées-Atlantiques (where goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier was born, who has never played for us but could have done so). In this sense, the Basque Country is a nation beyond the legal borders that divide it.
Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Navarre a separate autonmos region from the Basque one? But share a common culture and Basque nationalists claim it should be one region?
@@zakwan10 You are right, that's precisely what I meant. The thing is that Athletic Club's basque-only policy applies to basques as in people born in the Basque Country (Euskal Herria): Basque Autonomous Community (Euskadi) + Navarre (Nafarroa) + Pyrénées-Atlantiques (Iparralde). Navarre not only is a part of the Basque Country as a nation, it is its historical motherland so to speak, as the territory that the Basque Country comprehends is what the Kingdom of Navarre used to be until 1512 when it was conquered by Castille. This is a matter for historical/political debate, but in the end we are talking about Athletic Club's philosophy and Raúl García's case (born and raised in Navarre and currently at Athletic Club) proves my previous point.
@@aitorfuentes6446 I believe technically Antoine Griezmann is also eligible for this reason, yes?
I think there are a few French players who would show up whenever I tried a Bilbao save on FM in the past
@@wilsonkok4754 Not quite. Griezmann's case, as well as Laporte, Amorebieta or Llorente's cases, have to do not with the "born" but with the "raised" part of the philosophy, as despite not having been born in the territory of the Basque Country, they have spent time during the formative years in a Basque club: Griezmann at Real Sociedad, Laporte at Aviron Bayonnais and Athletic, and Amorebieta (who was born in Venezuela) and Llorente (who is not basque but from La Rioja) at Athletic. Laporte (great-grandparents) and Amorebieta (parents) are of Basque descent. However, it is not this, but the fact that they were raised in the Basque Country and played in their youth here, what makes them elegible to play for us.
@@aitorfuentes6446 ah I see, thank you for the correction.
The way the dude swings his arms just kills me every time

Honestly this award is very cool
I agree. It's really cool.
its a rarity nowadays, so it felt more precious to have a one-club player.
A modern retelling of Bilbao's kit colours will probably go like "a group of expats ordered a bunch of Brighton shirts off DHgate for their local team but ended up with some Saints shirts instead."
And referring to them as “Bilbao”

I really respect Bilbao for the reasons in the video, which were worded better than I could. But in this day and age, a club that not only sticks to its principles while respecting its history and heritage is a very rare thing and should be applauded.
Awesome video, one small thing is that Athletic recruits players from all of Euskal Herria, which goes beyond the borders of the modern Basque Country Autonomous Community. Notably, it includes all of Navarre and the French Basque Country
Athletic Club have been my favourite team in Spain ever since Joseba Etxeberria's days there - not quite a one club man, but he was an extraordinary servant for them

Can you please do a ‘what happened to Sunderland’ video
There is a whole documentary series on Netflix that answers hat question
@@christianround2774 Not necessarily. The question "What happened to Sunderland?" can't be answered by just looking at the last few seasons.
At the end of the 19th century, Sunderland was England's biggest club, the "team of all talents" they called it, and the 1895 World Champions after beating Hearts in an unprecedented game. They remained a competitive side until the late 30s, and then something happened, they just went down.
in the 1950s, there was an attempt to revive it with an influx of money, but somehow what made Arsenal big in the 30s and Manchester City in recent years failed with Sunderland's attempt of a revival using money. Since the 50s, Sunderland have been a middle-bottom of the table club.
The question is, how could Sunderland, from being the top club in England, become a club that hasn't been competitive since the late 30s? Despite having a huge fanbase.
Sunderland's crisis didn't start a few years ago, it started in the late 50s, maybe in the late 30s even.

Players are not only from Euskadi. They are from Euskal Herria, which includes Navarre and regions in France traditionally Basque-Speaking. It's a very special nation and a very special club.
2053 Trent Alexander Arnold accepts his award.
Oh I really hope you're right and he never leaves Anfield. YNWA
This is a seriously cool award
Athletic Club is slowly becoming my favourite Spanish team
A few errors at the beginning:
1) The policy isn't "in support of Basque autonomy"
2) The policy has been in place since 1912, not 1919
3) The map only shows the Basque autonomous community, but Athletic also allow players from the greater Basque Country (Navarre and the French Basque Country, with A TON of players coming from Navarre)
surely Tony Adams has to get the award soon
He managed pompey
I was waiting for something on them after their Supercopa success.
Aupa Athletic
A very lovable award. More clubs should be like Bilbao
The more I read and understand about Athletic Club, the more I fell in love with them ❤
Much easier to be a one club player at 1990s/2000s Manchester United, 2000s Barcelona or 1990s AC Milan. Le Tissier was unique it’s a shame they didn’t continue with that path.
I agree totally.
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL
Everthing about this channel is perfect !
Great video guys! One quick correction, Athletic only allows players born or formed in the Euskal Herria (the historical larger Basque country), this not only includes the basque country but also Navarre and the French Basque Country. Keep up the great work!
Puyol and McNeill. Pure class.
After seeing this video , there is only one thing ican say.
Football is an emotion. Not a game.
While this award seems to have its heart in the right place, it is comparatively easy to celebrate players who have stayed a club which has a history of success both domestically and in Europe. To really make a statement they could focus more on players like LeTissier or even those further down the leagues, who had opportunities to move elsewhere, for glory and/or money, but didn't.
Tom Lund really deserves this. Taking Lillestrøm from the third tier of Norwegian football to the top, rejecting offers from Ajax, Bayern München and Real Madrid along the way. Coaching his boyhood club after retirement and still to this day, he'll help in any way he can. His loyalty and effort for the club as a player, manager and supporter is the reason Lillestrøm still exsist as a top tier club in Norwegian football. As well as the city itself. For without Tom Lund, it would still just be a train station.
I love Athletic Club Bilbao for sticking to their traditions. I always root for them, as long as they aren't playing Barcelona.
Ibrahim Sangaré will be having words with Tifo regarding this “one club” award. His journeyman status developed by this channel is being undermined by Athletic Club de Bilbao
ah yes Ryan Giggs, lets ask his wife and brother if he's a worthy recipient of the award.
They don't really care about his off field activities over there, got a standing ovation when he was substituted at San Mames in 2012
@@penaltygallery a reward like this should take into consideration human decency, especially when it's this bad...
@@DayzAhat What is this? "The Sun"?
English tabloids & under-sheets-footballers stuff don't get over there. They couldn't care less about any British soap operas-ish.

Tony adams should get that award too

Tifo, can you do a video about liquidated clubs and which clubs you predict to dissolve (mainly those currently participating in the EFL) in the next few years. Would make an interesting video.
Someone needs to come up with the Journeyman award
Zlatan would be the poster boy for sure
Kevin Prince Boateng would be the first recipient of the award
@Reiss Bruin very true, but I wouldn't say those two descriptions are mutually exclusive.
For me, a journeyman is just someone who could never put down roots in any one particular place, and had to keep moving

This was fantastic
Could you do a video on Rangers new transfer policy? How they’ve learned from past mistakes and how we get so many players with great potential for free or compensation payments? Compared to the old way of working they are worlds apart now.
All thanks to Steven, Ross Wilson and the backing of the board
That arm flip killed me🤣🤣1:23

A slight shame they seem to be preferring those who were already at a top club rather than those such as Le Tissier and many Athletic players who stayed loyal over winning trophies. A great future recipient would be someone like John Trollope of Swindon who holds Football League record of most games at just one club
The jersey story was so cool

Hey tifo, you should do a video about Vasco da Gama, the club that changed the history of football fighting against racism in brazil. If you look into it, the history behind this club is the most incredible in the world, it really is. Search about the "Resposta Histórica", the letter that Vasco's president wrote to AMEA.
Funny how Bilbao is becoming Barca's new rival
Athletic Club has always been a huge club in La Liga, the first Clasico used to be Athletic Club - Real Madrid such as the greatest Barça’s rival in the 80’s used to be Athletic Club as well. When money started to change balances in modern football, Athletic struggled in winning trophies but never let its philosophy down, therefore as French people say “ Chapeau “
Its always been a rival for barcelona
@@fede2631 Respect, philosphy is greater than trophies. As a barca fan I'm sad that we've lost the philosphy, blame the board but it doesnt change the fact
@@nischayjitsingh4453 Barça lost its philosophy long time ago, it just remains “ Mes que un club “ motto. I seem to remember they awarded Giggs with something shortly before that Europa League game where Bielsa's Athletic Club battered a hopeless United team, with "future England captain" Phil Jones (yes, United fans used to call him that a LOT) in particular getting well and truly found out.
Nope, that was just a massive standing ovation from the whole of the San Mamés when Giggs was subbed in the second half.

Did Athletic Club first appeared on the Athletic?
Totti and Gerrard for sure
Maurice Malpas, Francesco Totti and Tony Adams
I hope Grealish is watching this and realizing what he is left to do.
Huge respect for this club. It’s honestly pretty amazing that they’ve never been relegated also, considering they have a very limited scouting source. Incredible achievement. I hope some way they can win a league title although it seems somewhat impossible with the other big clubs having a huge advantage. At the very least hope they can win a domestic cup & give the loyal fans some silverware to back up their strong principles.
As a matter of fact they just won the Spanish Supercup a couple of weeks ago
The CDR final will be between the 2 Basque sides, I've been waiting for the match up since last year. Unfortunately no fans will be in the stadium despite their best effort, major downer.

Tony Adams definitely deserves this award. Probably a bit more than Mr. Giggs if we're talking loyalty
Can’t wait for Tony Hibbert to receive his award.
Billy Sharp would be perfect for this award
I do feel a journeyman award (named after Harry Rednapp) should be setup by a rival team. This should celebrate players who didn't narrow their view of life and embraced new leagues and cultures. Another club should then set up the Freebie award, to celebrate those players who cost their new club nothing and were great servants, this could be sponsored by Aldi.
Next year it must surely go to Nicolas Anelka
What about Rui Costa?
He only left benfica cuz benfica needed money, he even choose fiorentina (higher transfer feeand less wages) over barca (lower fee but higher wages) ... Retired at benfica and still at benfica as vice president
That's loyalty
This award is really beautiful, shows what’s at the heart of football in an age of glam, big spending and fake fans
Totti deserves this year’s award
The award should be given to anyone retiring that year who has only represented one club.
How come?
