UEFA Cup Winners Cup 1980/81 went to Dinamo Tbilisi. This was during a period when they also won the Soviet Cup and Soviet Top League. Go back 20 years and the USSR Nations Cup winning side of 1960 had a core of Georgian talent.
This is the story of their rise and, with the fall of communism and the death of their stars, how it collapsed.

Time to load up FM, weâve got a stage to put Georgia back on
Haha great minds think alike mateđđŒđšâđ»
Stalin would be proud
Pump the Georgian league by returning Tbilisi to glory and then lead the national team to recognition
That sounds like a fun safe, IÂŽm in. That leads to the question: TimoÂŽs Leagues Megapack or is there a more accurate database for georgian football?
I was just thinking this!
The accurate pronunciations in this video are just.. out of this world!
Are you sure?
Nah, they mispronounced ĐĐžŃĐ°ŃĐ° лОга, it's VishaYA, reversed R is read as YA. And that I in Vishaya is a bit harder than you would have say it

Well I'm pretty sure there were one or two moments in Georgian history that woul make you pride

Nowadays we get pounded by Faroese fishermen.
The amount of obscure football knowledge I have because of Tifo is insane.
đ€Łđ€Łđ
Never wouldâve thought Iâd see a Tifo video about my hometown and country. Great video about a once great club with interesting stories.
Kipiani by the way is the GOAT. When they beat Liverpool some fan gave him money to congratulate him. He looked at it signed it with his autograph and gave the money back to the fan.
That's a sheer Zlatan moment
Kipiani was Zlatan way before Zlatan
Correct. The Soviet republics didnât play for the âRussianâ side they all played for the Soviet Union national team because it was one country representing all nationalities and ethnicities within the union.
Thank you for pointing it out, I knew that is how the video was going to start by saying they would "play with the Russians" *eyeroll*.
Iâve never heard of David Kipiani before but now his CZcams highlights look insane
The Georgian national cup is named in his honour
He was insane, if he hadnât been in ussr he probably would have been one of the best players in the football history
@@td-5374 100%
Because his name was blocked by the central government of the USSR because he was Georgian and not Russian
Real Madrid offered him a contract, but Soviet Union didnt let him go...
Anyone who has been to Georgia will know what a beautiful country it is. Lovely people and even better Food!
I would've loved if Ajax had won in 2019....
Or atalanta this season if they're playing the same devastating attacking play....
Underdogs surely... they can bite off anyone with their tight formations and a attacking output that prime Manchester united can be compared to ....
Hats off to gian piero gasperinii..đ
May they win the serie a in some seasons and throw roma out of the top 6
@Mithu Bhattacharya true....but we all knew that Liverpool were three times superior and Tottenham went through just cuz Lucas moura had one good match in his whole life
@Mithu Bhattacharya youâre right but Ajax seemed a better story, maybe because Holland hasnât had a winner for so long.

Interesting and insightful as always. So sad at the end. Didnât anyone else think the title was a bit click-bait? For clarity, it was European Cup Winners Cup!!!
The thumbnail is pretty straight forward
It's undebatably click-bait.
For clarity, it was the Cup Winners' Cup, not the UEFA Cup!!!
Yeah it was the cup winners cup. A trophy that doesn't exist anymore
TBF The Europacup II (aka Cup Winners Cup) was the second most important cup for international club football, so it wasn't like a shitty glorified trophy like the Intertoto Cup. Most clubs would've loved to win the Europacup II. It's quite the achievement for a club from Georgia to win a big trophy like this one
The streets won't forget when Georgia ruled European football
Another reasons why we need a 3rd European Cup (big up for the new coming UEFA Conference Cup!) and another reason why UEFA was super stupid to cancel the Cup Winners' Cup and in making - especially on the financial distribution of funds towards certain federations in an inequal way - most of the decisions since 1999 on.
It's super sad to always see the top 5 federations and the same clubs winning trophies. Sad, stupidly planned, inequal and digging distance between clubs in different countries, rather than promoting a good, fair football.
Anecdote: was in Tbilisi and bought a scarf of Dinamo Tbilisi, with written "1980 Cup Winners Cup Winners". Something I am terribly proud of.
End up the last 2 UEFA Conference League was won by representative from big 5 European leagues.
Oooh, I was reading about Carl Zeiss Jena last night and ended up on to Tbilisi! Really fascinating story, I remember watching Newcastle beat them in the UEFA cup.
I once won the Champions League with SC Toulon in FM20. Not meaning to brag but I guess my team should get the recognition they deserve
đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
Amateur! I took Woking from The Conference to the Champions League in 6 seasons
Thanks Tifo for this amazing video â€â€ I hope one day we will be back đ”âȘđ”
I have never seen anything look less like Bob Paisley.
Respect from Dinamo Bucharest!
Shengelia...as a Scotland fan that name sends shivers down my spine đŹ
As a Georgian thanks for doing this video.
How do you guys even gained the actual story and the chain of events, blows me away. Been listening to Tifo for a while, and it doesn't seem like I will be going away soon. Good content!
Alan Hansen's initial positioning to be caught out by Kipiani's pass to Gutsaev, ... well it was absolutely shocking.
Thank you so much for making this video. I don't know about Dinamo Tbilisi but our national team will soon rise đŹđȘâ„ïž
Yes! This video made my day, finally a video on the Georgian Golden Age of Football
A great watch. Thanks very much.
Thanks for the video from georgian and Liverpool fan :)
Guys as always I am humbled. I appreciate the knowledge. Keep up the great work.
Another stellar piece of work from Tifo.
Hopefully we'll see them again on the international stage. Georgia is a beautiful country full of wonderful people.
a new FM save ideas? let's go boysss
Can you do a video on Red Starâs 1991 CL win?
There's already a 30min video on CZcams about em. Not tifo tho
Thank you for a nice video on Dinamo Tbilisi.. good to know.. Please make a video on Red Star Belgrade and the players it produced including my favourite Dragan Stojkovic
These are my favourite tifo footballs, stories and events you don't know about!
Excellent video. Would also love to see an article regarding the rise and fall of Ararat Yerevan, fascinating story from winning the Soviet title and becoming a competitive European force to a complete non-entity in Armenian football.
i remember Russian football TV show used to do these kind of historical bits on legendary players and teams with archive video's and a lot of inside stories that simple people before the internet had no access to. i would watch beautiful clips of Baggio, Ronaldo, Cruyff and then there was Kipiani. it was unbelievable. i dont know what exactly made him so special to me - maybe because you never knew someone coming from these countries could play like that, but he looked out of this world.
The cup winners cup was the competition of the unlikely winners, Dynamo Tbilisi, Aberdeen, Mechelen to name a few
Hell yeah Mechelen.
i've been watching this channel for over a year now and would never have though that my country could get video here, im proud and thankful to you. amazing content keep it up
Our pleasure!
This is why I'm subscribed to Tifo... what a story!
I grew up in Singapore. One day in 1968 my older brother brought home a football magazine GOAL. I was fascinated by the colour pictures, especially of action from the European Cup final which Manchester United won beating Benfica 4-1. As a young and impressionable boy I read every word in that magazine and was hooked on football since. I remember a couple of years prior to that, neighbors crowding around a black and white television set watching the World Cup. I remember hearing names like Charlton, Moore, Hurst, Beckenbauer, and Overath. Boys in the neighborhood around my age seemed to be fascinated by the game the same time I did. Soon I was regularly playing football with them. Whenever I played, I tried to emulate the stars I read about and watched on TV. Fast forward to recent days. Of all my years following football, the Super League recently proposed is certainly the worst idea of all, primarily because it shuts out so many other clubs that for me make football so diverse and colourful and enjoyable.
I love your history videos, you should do more of these.would it be possible to show actual footage or use real photos?
Tifo, can you do a video about liquidated clubs and which clubs you predict to dissolve (mainly those currently participating in the EFL) in the next few years. Would make an interesting video.
Would love a video on Ipswich 1981 win in Europe or their decline from the top flight
WC 1982, USSR Vs Brazil. 4 Georgians in starting eleven. Included Captain Chivadze. â„
Tifo x Cold War Era History
One of your best videos ever
Are u going to explain the uefa conference league
Please can you explain the conference league and how to qualify for each country etc?
Thank you
I would love to see a video like this about IFK Gothenburg that won the UEFA cup in 82 and 87.
as a georgian im proud
What an amazing channel
Kipiani was incredible.
I saw the title and immediately knew it was Dinamo Tbilisi. Steau Bucharest was a fleeting guess as well
Just trying to imagine Joe's script for this video full of accent marks and hyphenenated syllables to aid pronunciation - cheers for the effort and a great video as always!
Can you do a video about the Videoton SC side that were finalists in the 1984-85 Uefa Cup?
Great video , there's one mistake Liverpool lost to Dinamo in first round of European cup 1979/1980 not 78/79 .I remember Liverpool losing to Dinamo T listening to first leg In 1979 .
If only we weren't in Soviet Union our FootBallers would be remembered as Legends worldwide.
Hopefully they will play in the UEFA Conference League. Good to see great clubs in european competitions.
could you do a video about the Gothenburg side that won the europa league twice? (uefa cup)
I know this is a long shot but anyway you could do some videos on MLS when the season starts?
They've got the dates wrong - the Liverpool and West Ham games were both a year later than stated here, 1979-80 and 1980-81. I remember the West Ham game - brilliant play by DT
If youâre putting up videos on sole european cup winners of countries, please do a video on Galatasarayâs 2000 europa league run!
I thought I was going to be Steaua Bucharest.
Rather Red Star Belgrade. Steaua was true powerhouse at its height.
@@psykkomancz not really. Steaua's 85-86 EC win really came out nowhere. For the previous five seasons they had only played one European fixture, an elimination in a first round of the Cup Winners' Cup. During that period, the prominent teams were Dinamo Bucharest and U Craiova.
@@alexandrumircea Thank you for explaining. Judging by the name, you are from Romania, so i take your word :)
Steaua Bucharest were a good side in the mid 2000âs, would have been in a UEFA Cup Final in 2006 if it wasnât for middlesborough and a crazy semi final 2nd leg!
@@alexandrumircea Craiova played a eufa cup final against real Madrid.

Great video!! Next video Steaua winning champions league!
The game animations are looking more and more like the in-game 2D classical view of Football Manager. :-D
I wonder how much of an impact rugby had on Georgia's fall in football. This only wants Georgia added to a second division (with/promotion/relegation) of a Six Nations even more. Surely Georgians have a stronger sense of pride in their rugby team these days?
We have pretty big faith in Rugby National Team, League isnt best here, there are lots of problems yet just like in Football League.
The final played in Dusseldorf was poorly attended, due to both finalists being behind the 'Iron Curtain' and fan travel was extremely difficult from Georgia and East Germany respectively.
Love Dinamo! Respect between most Dynamo Sports Society teams, like Kyiv, Zagreb, Tbilisi, Levski Sofia (formerly Dinamo Sofia), Minsk etc...
We need a Dinamo Zagreb history of the marvellous win of the Fairs Cup of 67
Can you make a video on Gerrard's tactics this season?
I don't think Bob Paisley ever had that much hair even when he had hair.
Very clear to me that the USSR's emphasis on sport produced some serious top talents
You also need a society were young people can afford to devote themselves to sports and not risk destroying your life
Do a video of leeds and GFH capital and what happened with david haigh. Very intersting story.
Can you do 1986 UCL winner Steaua Bucharest ? A very surprising and interesting story !
Tifo must put this kind of history
Make a video on best players who would be Brilliant if not for coaches
Joe Cole?
Finally, big up.
Make a video on how uefa cup winners cup came to being.
I'd forgotten all about Carl Zeiss Jena. They were always there or thereabouts in European competitions back in the 80s, I wonder what happened to them after reunification?
Tifo will you please make a video about Bob Paisley and his achievements, I almost never hear any football channels give him any recognition.
Could you make one about psv's win?
I got a recommendation our of the blue and now I'm here for every upload, keep it up and I really love your works, a reply would mean the world
And to top it off, their opponents in the final were also pretty unlikely winners, won't you say?
Such a sad ending....
Please do RED STAR BELGRADE !!!!
I was hoping this would be about Steau Bucharest given the title. Anyway, still enjoyed the video

Not true. Both Arsenal and Spurs have won the UEFA European Cup Winner's Cup. However, as it no longer exists as a competition people think it doesn't count as a European trophy.
