  • The European Cup, now known as the UEFA Champions League, began in the 1955-56 season, and was won by La Liga title winners Real Madrid, who overcame French champions Stade de Reims in the final.
In this video, from Hibernian to AC Milan, HITC Sevens takes a look at each of the 16 teams from that first European Cup / Champions League, why they featured, their history since then, and where they are now.

Fun fact: The team participating from Spain could've easily been Barcelona instead of Real Madrid. Carlos Pardo, the L'Equipe correspondent in Spain had contacted Barcelona about the tournament. But apparently Barcelona's secretary didn't know about the newspaper& didn't think it'd be a success. Pardo's wife advised him to visit Saporta (Real Madrid vice president & Bernabeu's right hand man). Both Saporta & Bernabeu liked the idea. The lot went to Paris in the following weeks & the European Cup was founded.

To add on to this, Barcelona had won a couple of Latin cups which was a tournament between best clubs of France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Barca were along that time better than Madrid and probably would have won a few European cups. They decided to chose the inter cities fair cup which they thought would be the better cup out of the two, talk about a bad decision

Swedish teams have a bunch a names due to how we organize things. Clubs are typically active in multiple sports (E.g. Djurgården are very successful in Hockey too), so you have a "parent" club for all sports and "member" clubs for individual sports.
Then there are the 168 "kamratföreningar" (IFK), which is an association of clubs in basically every city in Sweden in all major sports (and a few are even in Finland). They all share the same blue-white colors, and the most famous of these in football are IFK Gothenburg and IFK Norrköping. Different clubs, but they are also part of the same parent club, and it is considered to be a "kamratderby" when they play even if they are from opposite sides of the country.

When are people going to stop assuming that Real Madrid and Barcelona are in the same kind of financial trouble? Both clubs have suffered during the pandemic, but Barcelona’s problems run much deeper and well beyond a couple of seasons of having no matchday income. They’ve been severely mismanaged for more than half a decade, which culminated with them not being able to renew Messi’s contract this summer.
Real Madrid are no way near in that kind of trouble. Clubs in Spain are usually very reliant on matchday income. During the pandemic there’s been no fans in the stadiums, so Madrid had to find the money elsewhere. They’ve sold a bunch of squad players and cashed in on others who were letting their contract run down. That’s it.

I don't think there's mismanagement in terms of finance from Real Madrid. The issue with Madrid's finance was they were building stadiums & investing in long term infrastructure, their training ground looks like something from the movie & they invested in facilities for the youths.
They also saved in recent years with few signings but this season & next year, they're planning to spend a lot. Seems like Perez didn't buy a lot as he wants to create another team like galacticos or the one like CR7 but now with Mbappe or maybe Haaland.

Madrid played really like crap that match. And was even qualifiying at very the end of the match Luis Enrique (Playing a full-back in that match) lost his shit and went to try to head a corner, and got his back taken. He might be already plotting his move to Barcelona... (Joking). That was the Madrid that couldn't win a European Cup/Champions League in 32 years. Not the superpower it was before, or returned to be afterwards.

I might have one thing to point out is that the Dutch league wasn't like what it is today. Back in 1954/55 season, the first division was contested by 56 teams divided into 4 sectors with the winners of each group going forward into a championship play-off structure. PSV were the top team of Group C, FC Eindhoven were Group D, NAC Breda, Group A and Willem II Group B (don't ask me how they sorted these things out). Of the four teams Willem II were the overall winners with PSV third ahead of FC Eindhoven. What makes this even weirder is that the KNVB wanted to streamline this into two leagues of 18 teams and the winner of the two groups goes head to head to be crowned Champions of The Netherlands. It was only another season that there would be the Eredivisie as we know it today which for all intents and purposes is easier on the heads for the modern day football fan.

I really wander of the outcome after the 10-12 first spots. You have to take into consideration that UEFA cup which was truly a big deal before 1999, as it was the cup winners cup as well. Clubs like Porto, Dortmund, Benfica, Roma, Tottenham are all the same tier?
