- In 1941, 34-time Austrian champions Rapid Wien - anglicised as Austria Vienna - beat Schalke to join the likes of Hertha Berlin and Bayern Munich in the list of champions of German football.
In this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the historical context both on and off the pitch, which led to a team from Austria winning the most prestigious football / soccer trophy in Germany. - Sport
Not the first time something Austrian became the champion of Germany...
Thats why you always let People into Vienna art school

6-14 ads on this one video alone??????? TF is all about this demonization 💀💀
@@sinful9347 I got two🤷🏽♂️
Looks like there will be 6 ads in my viewing
@@leafgreene6014 I say 6-14 because every yellow dot has a chance to contain 2 ads, and you could see an ad at the start before you watch so a maximum of 14, but if you dont get an ad or any duel ads, a minimum of 6

Teams from the last season of the East German highest league. Where are they now?
I saw someone suggest this on an earlier video, and thought this was a good idea.
Stahl Brandenburg 💪
Yes the good old highest-liga
There was also a team from current Romania that became Hungarian champions in 1944. Nagyvarad that was part of Hungary, currently Oradea in Romania
ah the dismemberment of hungary, the old trianon treaty. i work with romanians and hungarians and they get along just fine, to each others faces lol.
If that club is currently around, do they still claim it?
Historical Fun Fact: Because the DFB was open to ALL german football clubs, foreign clubs competing for the german championship in the early years were a thing, as long as they were "german". The first runner up for the german championship in 1903 was the Deutsche Fußball-Club Prag (German Football-Club Prague). The club was founded by german jews who lived in Prague, which was a part of Austria-Hungary, back then.
Rapid Wien is the club that made me love football. I studied abroad in Vienna, and their supporters were the kindest people I've ever met. They value hard work and effort, and they're the reason I love this game.
I'm a simple man, I see a HITC Sevens documentary style video made by Alfie, I click.
Suggestion: Brazil XI that play domestically in Brazil
Nice video, as an Austrian I love videos about my coutries history 👍👍 Thanks man, keep it up
Me an Austrian who didn't know this: Yeeeeeah!!

I always look forward to docs like these.

Great video and thanks for looking into it!
It might be worth mentioning that Rapid critically discussed its role in the nazi era. It was the first Austrian Bundesliga club to make a study with historians and the DÖW (Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance) called "Grün-weiß unterm Hakenkreuz (Green-white under the swastika).
Kind regards,
a Rapid fan
Thank you so much for doing a documentary team about another giant in a country like Austria Wien! It’s very interesting.
Also please do a video about Ludogorets soon:)
Another brilliant doco Alfie. Thanks and have a nice (or bearable) Sunday, all.
Man I love this video. Make any historical documentaries you want, football or not, you tell the stories amazingly and the stories themselves are gripping!

Thanks for the video. You are a breath of fresh air.
I am now bingeing on your videos during this short Euros break before round of 16 knock out stages start. We are learning so much from your research in these videos, thanks Alf.
Austria: Has the Strongest National Team since the 1970s
HITC Sevens: A rather modest Team
Are you alright?
I'm Austrian myself and that still isn't a very good team. Modest is the right word for it
@@jimenogonzalez2030 Never said it's very good, it's still the best we've had in decades. The point still stands.

Love history! Kudos
very interesting and enlightening to watch! the stuff at the end regarding Austria's delayed coming to grips with their torrid past was also good to see, I felt. I wonder if one day, Austria will again be a big player in world football

Hey Alfie, how about the best XI to spend their entire career at one club.
club-loyalty is a rare thing these days. But I think that could make up for a good story at least.

Regarding the whole Austrian view on the Anschluss thing - first off, the Anschluss was indeed rather popular. Mainly because Austria was still reeling from the collapse of the Empire and in 1918, most people didn't think Austria in that form was able to survive as a country. The collapse also caused hyperinflation, which was staved off in the mid 20s, only for the economy to crash back down in the 20s and 30s. So the sentiment that Austria as a nation was not able to survive was still very prevalent, and the integration into the bigger Germany with a (seemingly) strong economy welcomed.
Also, Karl Renner was born in modern day Dolní Dunajovice in the former german majority region of southern Bohemia, which had, in the waning days of WW1 together with the rest of Sudetenland already declared an Austrian republic. No referendum was given to the people in that region (just like South Tyrol) so Renner, as a member of the losing group in that exchange, obviously supported the annexation of the Sudetenland.
As for Antisemite - before the war, most of the snippets used to support the thesis that he was an antisemite are lacking context. Namely, the conservative "Christlichsoziale Partei" used the same antisemitic rethoric as the German right, including the "jewish social democrats". Renner mostly appropriated that rhetoric with heavy sarcasm to attack those same opponents. The antisemitism post war was mostly in regards to former KZ inmates, as the Austrian government took the same stance that the allies did in the 1943 Moscow conforence (that Austria was Hitlers first victim), so from the view of the government at the time they were simply not responsible. So imo he wasn't unusually antisemitic for the time.
He did also spend the whole post-Anschluss period under house arrest by the nazis. A rather cushy one compared to other social democrats, but still
Obviously, in hindsight, especially his post WW2 positions, are incredibly wrong. I just wanted to contextualize the information slightly.
could you do a video explaining Daniel levy reign as Tottenham chairman
only when they win something
There's an error in the description though Austria and Rapid are two distinct clubs (I've been to oth clubs' games...) from Vienna
1:54 Jack Grealish seems to be a time traveler then
ps. there's an error in the description, Rapid Wien's anglicised name is Rapid Vienna. You got it right in the vid though :)
I ALREADY KNEW THIS FACT!
I really hope that one of the two other Second World War features you intend to do is about Dynamo Kiev's 1942 "Death Match", which is really insanely fascinating.
At least Vienna won the title when they were actually part of Germany.
In the early years of german football, one of the best teams to compete in the german championship was DFC Prag, a german-speaking team from Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They qualified for the final in 1903 (which they lost to VfB Leipzig).
