I came across this video when doing (another) Google search to find likeminded people who also lament the absence of the competition - and everything that entails. I like to believe that the day when football will finally be saved as a sport the Cup Winners' Cup will also make its comeback, but of course that's going to be in another era, if ever.

The European club competitions used to be very competitive. I think the top 4 system for the big leagues for the UEFA Champions League has kind of diluted it. But beforehand only the league champions were allowed into the European Cup. The 2nd and 3rd place teams from the leagues would go into the UEFA Cup which would great competition as strong teams are in that competition. Then we have the European Cup Winners' Cup that would be comprised of domestic cup winners which would normally be strong contenders as well.

And they finished 2nd in the league in 1987-88. So back then, the big players did not have the same chance of winning the biggest competitions every year like they do today. If you weren't the champions of your domestic league, you weren't qualifying for the European Cup. And you needed to win every season to have a chance of winning it every season.

The three UEFA Club tournaments today are pure and simply, a cash grab. It's utterly ridiculous that a team can get knocked out of the Champions League(even in the preliminary rounds - prior to the group stages), and still be in European competition by then dropping down to the Europa League. If they then get knocked out of that, they're still in Europe, by dropping down to the Conference League. It's all set up for the big boys of European football to clean up, and that was shown this year, with the three competitions being won by a German team, an Italian team, and a Spanish team.
The beauty of the old format was that a so called 'lesser' team could shock the big boys, reach a final, and even win it.
My team, Aberdeen had to beat Bayern Munich in the Quarter Final, drawing 0-0 in Munich, and coming from 2-1 down with 14 minutes left to win 3-2 at Pittodrie. A fairy tale was in the making. After dispatching the now defunct Waterschei (from Genk) in the Semi-final, we were by far the better team v Real Madrid in the Final, winning 2-1 AET. It was a dream, but to a great extent it was expected, certainly by Aberdeen fans. We were an incredible team back then, and we knew we could beat any team in Europe. We then went on the lift the European Super Cup by defeating SV Hamburg 2-0 at Pittodrie, after a 0-0 draw in Hamburg.
These dreams will never happen again to 'lesser' teams. European football is, and shall remain dominated by the big leagues. We might occasionally see the likes of Ajax, or Benfica, lift a European trophy, but in the main, it's going to be the same teams winning year on year. European football is boring now-a-days. It's faceless. It would be great to back to the days of the straight up knock out tournaments, but it'll never happen.

AFC and CONCACAF get 2 spots, 4/5 CONEMBOL spots, and 7ish spots to UEFA and CAF, and one spot to OFC. Call it the International Cup of something. THEN have another one based on ranking alone and if teams not in the other two competitions. 64 teams, groups of 4 with someone from the group be host, top team in group goes to KO round. Call it the Nations Cup of something. Not only do other nations can compete in something, but it also allows FIFA to stay at 32 teams.

Well yep. But in that time you played in a very competitive and strong league, in the Soviet Union League you had all the Moscow teams, and Dínamo Kiev playing in the same League for example, which meant that you got to have a strong teame, with good players and be very competitive to andle on that league fool of sharks. At this point of view the separation was bad for teams like Dínamo Tblissi, because only in Georgia they didn't have real competition, and the quality went down hill. For example if you take on Real Madrid and put them playing in a league only with 3d division teams, eaven the quality of Real Madrid has a club will crumble. That is what happened to Dínamo Tblissi, and with Dínamo Kiev the same, but they managed to improve the Ucranian League during the late 90's and early 2000's, and the rise of Shaktar Donetsk helped a lot.
