  • Multi-club ownership has been thrust into the limelight with Jim Ratcliffe, who owns Nice, and his fresh attempts to acquire Manchester United. Has a dangerous can of worms been opened and is there a scenario where four or five major conglomerates end up owning all of football? This is a clip taken from a two-part podcast special on the future of football...

NOT ONLY THAT! About 80 percent of clubs in the big leagues are ALREADY having strong mutual relationships or multi-ownership models. The Premier League let the Glazers steal the club in front of the whole world and suck it dry for all those years because it was in every other club's advantage. Meanwhile City and Chelsea rose from nothig and became decently successful football clubs. It's revenge-time I guess! YALLAH QATAR! F@@@ OFF THE GLAZERS!

TBF the teams City have bought are either in completely different markets or will not be in a position to compete with them in Europe for a very long time. Whole multi club ownership thing stinks but once Uefa fumbled the RedBull case there is probably no way to stop it.

Think 10 years from now and take this trend to its logical end point....the only teams competing at the top of their domestic leagues and in European competitions will be members of large conglomerates of football clubs.
Uefa will be powerless and have essentially sanctioned the creation of a super league by another name. It's going to be absolutely awful for the vast majority of fans and anyone with a respect for football history and sporting ideals, not to mention the moral and ethical dilemmas posed by oligarchs and authoritarian governments controlling the game.
Its a sickening thought and I believe it'll utterly ruin the game in my lifetime. I just hope some common sense restrictions are imposed, and soon.

Ratcliffe/Ineos also own Lausanne football club in Switzerland, this always seems to be forgotten. They also have a partner arrangement with Racing Club Abidjan in Africa. The ideal principles being spoken about here are unrealistic in the context of where we are today as a society and economically in Europe/the world. It seems patronizing to speak in the name of what "fans" might wish for too. There will be a wide range of expectations and values linked to being a club fan, not everyone will adhere to principles of western ethics over the simple expectation of winning and competing at the highest level - depending on who you support. Surely the only key rule should be that clubs owned by the same organisation cannot compete in the same competition. For obvious reasons. This would ensure that the only incentive for multi club ownership would be for ressource sharing and creating a training academy across the teams, something I find actually quite positive. What is so difficult about making that rule and adhering to it? Give the problem to the prospective owners, not the football authorities. It should also be forbidden to have individuals who are, or represent team owners, involved within any sporting authority.

How is this a gulf state issue? What current examples are there of gulf states owning multiple top clubs or clubs of similar stature?
This video brushes on multiple situations where this is an issue and none of them relate to gulf states. It also highlights that more than 80 clubs in Europe's major leagues are in a system of this nature. AND it mentions thar this has been ongoing for *decades*.
So to just peg this up as a gulf state issue is the type of lazy islamaphobia that both puts the conversation out of focus, so we'll never find a real solution, and detracts from the real gulf state ownership issues.
      Do better

It gets me every time a British journalist says clubs are supposed to be for the local communities, but within 5 minutes praises the PL for its international reach. You can only seek international fame and money for so long before you change the nature of what the fan community really means.
The multi club model is an extension of this global outreach in a way that makes fiscal sense. Why load all that global expenditure on just one club when you can divide it amongst multiple ones.
As long as there are clear rules to avoid collusion say no two clubs in the same country or max two clubs in any Fifa conference (UEFA/ CONCACAF etc) you should be fine. This will also help clubs in more diverse places find money for football.

That City group will, if they have not already started, exploit the problem of determining the fair value of players for transfers.
A talented player that's been hoovered up in a league without a salary cap or strong financial regulations can be sold within the 'City' group for pennies on the dollar. Man City records a purchase at a price thats been drastically depressed and essentially funded it from one of their sister clubs.
