ASUS ROG STRIX GL531GU REVIEW - Coolest GTX 1660Ti Laptop?

  • Today I review the 15.6" Asus ROG Strix GL531GU with an i7 9750h CPU and GTX 1660Ti Graphics. This may well be the best cooled GTX 1660Ti 15" Laptop I have used.
    Also available as a 17" model.
    My unit was supplied by Hidevolution (www.hidevolution) and they applied a liquid metal repaste to the CPU and GPU.

      Gl531 is strix serries
      G502 is zephyrus serries
      Fx505 is Asus tuf serries
      Note : those are 2019 serries,
      And for the code after the laptop class, there is the cpu models. "G" is for intel and "D" is ryzen. And the last digit is for the gpu models.
      D = gtx 1050
      T = gtx 1650
      U = gtx 1660ti

    I've got one of these. Upgraded to 32gb ram. Came standard with single stick of 16gb, which was annoying, but it still ran GTA 5 on GeForce now optimum settings at stable 80fps with the single 16gb stick. Now I've got the extra ram stick installed this thing is a mini beast! I'm using stock thermal paste and haven't seen it go above 85° when gaming ever. Usually sits between 70° and 79° when gaming, but with occasional Spike to 82° under heavier load. Really I just think Asus did a really good job on the cooling design. Yup, the fans can get loud under load on turbo, but next to my water-cooled desktop with 3 X 6" cooling fans installed...... Can't even hear the g531gu over the desktop when they are in the same room.

    These are good temps but I agree with others, it's not a very fair comparison since you said it has liquid metal applied ;-) When I received my Dell G7 with 9750h and 2070 Max-q it was also thermally throttling even in Firestrike physics test, after I repasted CPU and GPU using Conductonaut liquid metal - the temperatures dropped by about 20c, the highest I get in Firestrike test is about 80c for GPU and CPU. It just shows that liquid metal is basically a necessity in all thin laptops if people don't want to rely on manual undervolting.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  Před 4 lety

      First off, I wasn't comparing this to anything. Second, there are users in the comments with stock paste saying their laptop never gets above 85 degrees. I had people in the first look say the same thing and I made a point to reference that. Third, you seem to agree that applying liquid metal can help (not always though- my m15, Razer 15) so for an extra $65 over a cost of $1399 you will agree that it is money well spent? I think so and thus since this is how Hidevolution make more money it is imperative I show the results. If you were I , how would you have done the video?
      One thing that people lose focus on here is that there is more to Hidevolution than just shipping out a stock laptop. People can get those cheaper from Amazon. Those people may have thermal issues down the line or they may end up with single channel RAM. When I review a laptop from Hidevolution I'm not only reviewing the laptop but also the services they offer.
      I'm going to be doing a live stream video with them and I am going to use this video as a talking point.
      I would still like to know how you would do such a video though...

    Could you please test the M.2 SSD temperature during longer CPU/GPU combined usage? I suspect heat coud be a problem here, since the M.2 SSD module is crowded on top of the WiFi card and both seem to be located too close to one of the GPU heatpipes. I worry about possible damage to the WiFi card or SSD on the long term.
    Also, a second test could involve intensive use of both the M.2 SSD and WiFi simultaneously, like a longer download at high speed over WiFi with temp folder placed on the SSD drive. Knowing the SSD temperature would really help here too!

      Necula Cristian they were big chunks of dust. But for some reason there was only dust on one of the fans. And what Asus said was definitely marketing

    Can higher refresh rate monitors on laptops affect battery performance? Because my gaming laptop is always on 144hz

      Yes, it probably will do. Most stay at the 144 hz when on battery so I thought it was good that Asus lowered this to 48 Hz. Not as if I will be gaming on battery...

    Do you have the ICC file by any chance and does calibrating the screen make a difference?

      Sorry, no I don't have the file anymore. I don't think it makes that much difference to be honest
