wow finally a review that actually measured the unit instead of just taking the manufacturers word. well done sir
Thanks Andre ! Yeh, I'm amazed how few people do that - even weighing it. I think the spec says 5.8 lbs but it weighed more than that. Appreciate the comment :)
A very useful and well made review thanks ! But I have doubts about the scale you used to weigh the laptop :-) These mechanical bathroom scales are meant to measure weight in the hundreds of pounds, and are fairly accurate in that range, (it could'be totally random, but I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers in red actually indicate the zone of best accuracy) but at the extreme low and high end they are really inaccurate (and setting the 0 wont help). It is very possible that the manufacturer is honest and that your scale is off, as they all are in the extremes. Maybe you could try with a kitchen scale made to measure a few pounds, and not 150, to see if you get the same result. Have a good day :-)
Hi Yak, Thanks for watching and I am glad you liked my review. I do have a kitchen scale but they don't go as high as 8-10 lbs. I have a small postal scale too but that wasn't suitable either. It's only meant as an estimation anyway. Hard things to weigh as they invariably hide the read screen. I'll pop into Bed Bath and Beyond and see if they have anything more suitable. Do you have this laptop?
Hi ! Unfortunately, I dont have it, yet, I watched your review to help me decide :-D But if I buy it I will let you know, and try to weigh it as well :-D. I'm wondering, maybe a parcel scale would be in the good range ? No idea if it's expensive ... don't rush to buy something because of my comment, maybe your scale is accurate, that's the thing with +/- 1lbs ... it could be 0 :-P Maybe you could start by weighing know objects like a few water bottle to see if there is an offset. If you know after your test that you balance displays +0.5 libs, then just subtract that from your measurement next time :-)
I'll be uploading a an unboxing of the MSI GT62VR later today followed by a full review in about a week. Always good to have options! The MSI can be bought from Microcenter for only $1400
This is one the best, most hands on and detailed review I have seen of the laptop so far. Nice Video. Keep it up.
Abubakar Musa Thanks! I am working on one now for the MSI GT62VR 6RE which is a direct competitor to the Asus so stay tuned!
This is how reviews should be done. No crap talk, but, pure details. Very well done sir :)
Thanks mate ! Glad you liked it :)
This truly helped me decide what laptop to buy. Thanks a million!
Vlad Impaler Glad I helped! Thanks for watching ☺
I have one of those. It handles pretty much anything I throw at it.
Yeh, it is pretty powerful - should be good for a number of years :)
I am impressed with cooling capability of this tiny machine. Keeping GTX 1070 which uses more than 100W below 80 degrees... Brutal cooling technology...
mb060083d yes, it is very good. Amazing what they can do now, whilst keep fans and the heat of the base of the laptop low. Thanks for watching!
And no GPU frequency decrease. Amazing. Remember that older generations of gaming laptops were decreasing their GPU frequency to keep the GPU under 100 celsius...
mb060083d yes, there was serious throttling.. If you have seen my MSI GT62VR video I recorded both the max cpu and GPu boost frequencies and they did very well.
Good video, subbed !
Do you mind if a drop a bit of bad news on you? I had a GL502VM (GTX 1060) and it would get very hot even on a cooling pad. So hot it will eventually break the screen. The glue around the panel on the bottom heats up and then separates. 5:40 - Look above your F12 key, notice your bezel is slightly separated from the screen?
After some heavy gaming sessions over a two week period mine was 3 times further away than yours is. I think it's a huge design flaw having the screen block the air vents in the back.
I actually purchased the new Alienware 15 R3 with the hinge forward design because of this issue. I am hoping the AW doesn't have this same issue. I notice you also have the AWR3, how's it holding up?
Edit: Great reviews by the way. Very detailed.
NOSfusion That is a bad design flaw. Although I didn't mention it in my Asmus video I had a it of plastic cone away at the front. I figured it happened when I took the back off. The Alienware 15 R3 is faster but the biggest issue for me is that the CPU runs very hot and overclocking it causes instability, particularly in 3D applications. I struggled to run game benchmarks with it overclocked
The GPU runs cool and overclocks well. I'm putting my footage together now and then just need to edit it
Thanks for the quick reply. I really hope the AW performs better, I would hate to have to return another laptop. After my second return, I'm sure my credit card company would think I was up to something fraudulent and perhaps wouldn't let me purchase a third laptop lol.
lol, sounds like me. I'm having to buy this stuff and return it if I don't like it/too expensive. Ihave an IPhone 7 plus to do next and I think I only have 5 days left to return it..
Better hurry then!
PS, looking forward to your AWR3 review. Subbed.
Cheers mate. It takes so long. I could do a quick one but I feel that is a disservice to everyone. I try and cover everything..CPU/GPU overclocking, temps, 1440pbenches, 1080p benches, benches overclocked. Took video on this iPhone and that was a nightmare getting 1.5 GB files off of, lol. Just got to the VR clip, nearly forgot that !
best review ever and.....thank you
Andrew Walters Cheers Andrew! Appreciate you taking the time to watch ☺️
I don't understand I have the same laptop with a GTX1070 and my fans do not make that ' low' noise. I thought that this was a bearing issue but they replaced the fans with new ones. Mine is making a low noise together with a annoying high pitched one.
I've made a video on my channel. Can you tell me if you have that noise also?? Thanks in advance. Nice review and finally someone doing a COMPLETE review of this laptop.
DrumSimme1989 hey there, Yeh, mine had no high pitch noise at all. I'm at work at the moment so when I get home I will fire up your channel and have a look /listen. Thanks for watching!
i just loved this reviw thanks alot
عادل الجري thanks!
Great stuff man.
Hows the fan noise level like and the Hard drive? That's number 1 for me. Also what was the Hz on the monitor? 60?75?
Satire Thanks! The fan noise was quiet, I was impressed with it even under full load. Just a rush of air. The temperatures were good too. The screen was a 1080p 60Hz IPS panel. I'm just about to finish my Alienware 15 R3 review and that is slightly faster.
Hey mate, First of all that is a great review!
Do you have any problems with the plastic getting hot while gaming? Can the heat really damage the plastic panels?
Ido508 hey, thanks for watching! I didnt find that it got too hot , plastic can warp after a while with heat for sure. That happened to my Rader Edge near the exhaust fan. I did notice that a piece of plastic at the front was coming away a bit, I thought perhaps because I took the back off..
Thank you for your quick answer!
I really appreciate it :)
No problem. If you any other questions just let me know :)
Ah, the Asoos. Great choice!
sir you are doing an amazing job with these in depth videos. however could you just give your finals thoughts when comparing Asus gl502vs and msi gt62vr dominator pro, cause I am caught up between these two, and I am soon going to buy one.
thankyou
ayush ratan Hi there! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed them☺️ They are similar models indeed. In my opinion the MSI GT62VR wins hands down. The only thing I don't like on the MSI is the warranty label covering one of the screws on the back cover. That being said, on MSI's website it says it's okay to remove on their FAQ's. The MSI has louder speakers, has a sub woofer, has better battery life, has lights that can change color rather than just red. You also have full control over the fans. You can also find the MSI GT62VR for cheaper. I paid $1400. Hope that helps!
Thanks alot you are one of the best tech analyst.
ayush ratan Thanks Ayush!
awesome video. i'm considering one of these. there are videos on youtube of battlefield 1 being played @ max settings, and the cpu and gpu temps regularly going to 90 celsius. what are the highest temps you usually see when you're gaming? cheers
G. Robinson Hi, thanks for watching! I typically saw high 70's / low 80's on both the cpu and gpu. I can install the game on my AW15 R3 and see how it gets on., I ended up returning the Asus because of the power supply issue.
awesome. im curious to see!
I got the asus rog strix gl502vm and I love it and I have not any heat issues whatsoever. Idk maybe the guy in the comments got a defective one.
Marechan28 Gaming yes, perhaps. Mine was cool. At the time I had nothing to compare it to but after playing with a handful of devices now the cooling seemed OK on the Asus and since the price dropped I think is good value.
Hi,
Thanks for the review.
Is the 180watt power supply sufficient during peak load?
Also is the screen coming off a serious issue?
Which one between this and the Alienware 15 (Gtx 1070)?
Thanks
morphin1 Hi there! Thanks for watching my video. The screen never came away on my unit and I did put it through its paces with all the benchmarks. A little bit if plastic did cone loose on the front edge, I assumed it was because I took the back off but underlines the not so great build quality. I do think a 180W power supply is too small for this set up. Batteries will often show not charging as part of their power cycle to reduce battery wear but this decreased charge quite rapidly and even to 93% in my testing if I recall. For example the similarly configured msi gt62vr dominator pro 087 I am looking at now comes with a 230W power supply and I don't see the same effect as in the Asus. If you are choosing between the Asus and the Alienware I would go Alienware with the same cpu and GPu. That should run cooler than the one I have. If you want to throw the MSI one in the mix I would go with that. It has a larger battery than the Asus, bigger PSU, Gsync, plenty of usb ports, much better sound than the Asus and slightly better than Alienware. Build quality and weight is in between the Asus and Alienware. Temps are great. And I got mine for $1400. You should be able to get it for $1600 easy so it's cheaper than the Alienware I believe. Happy shopping! By the way, I will be doing a full review on the MSI and a smackdown video between it and the Alienware so stay tuned!
I want one so bad for my birthday or Christmas 😩😩😩😩😩😩😍
kwuamaee hersey Perhaps Santa might get you one, you never know 😀
I found these selling for 1080$ that seems VERY cheap. I'm planning on buying one, mainly for use on my studio. Do laptops run well these days? I'll be using a focusrite Scarlett interface to record audio, with some audio editing, but I'll mainly use my desktop for the actual editing. Main reason I ask is because the last laptop I bought (and still use), isn't the best. It had a decent processor for the time, but it runs sluggishly slow. Do ssds in laptops make a huge difference with boot times in the same way they do on desktops?
LimitIsIllusion yes, ssds are often faster than what you see in many desktops as they use the PCIe interface rather than a Sata interface in a 2.5" ssd. This laptop will be plenty fast enough and that is an awesome price!
So let me get this straight...
You reviewed a monster laptop with awesome performance, and the most critical issue, was addressed for 5 seconds in 1 sentence.
The laptop is DISCHARGING while being plugged !! How is that even acceptable?!
I dont care if its 3% after 45minutes.
This is a degisn f*** up and unacceptable for a gaming laptop.
I was so close to buy this laptop.. Hell, it was in my cart on amazon. But when I heard this issue occurs for multiple people, even after replacing the product (with asus warrenty), I realized I would not buy this.
Please read my post again and tell me where do you see I criticized the reviewer for the battery issue.
The design F*** up was ASUS', not his, obviously.
By saying Im a kid that cant afford it, you dont prove any point, so just to make it clear:
1. none of your business if I can afford it or not
2. I expected the reviewer to state this issue is a big downside of this laptop. For me, it was a dealbreaker, as it was for others who bought it, and more that will buy it.
Barak Radomsky Hello Barak , thanks for the comment. I was concerned with this and I agree it is unacceptable. When the Alienware 15 with a 980m was launched it came with a 180W adapter and the same thing happened. That's why for that laptop I have a 220w psu. As for my coverage of it I felt that showing it on video in action plus adding it in my conclusion was sufficient as I was concerned about the length of the video. I saw other reviews on CZcams where it even wasn't mentioned....Next time I will try and spend more time on the negative points.
OWNORDISOWN sir ur reviews r awesome.
i m planning to buy dis model but im confused between msi gt62vr dominator pro 087 and asus gl 502vs?
which one will u suggest?
rohit patil Hi Rohit, Thanks, I'm glad you like them ! I have seen the MSI in the store and it looks more chunkier than the Asmus and I believe is about 0.4" thicker but it is still a reasonable weight. I like the speakers on the MSI and it has a subwoofer. It also has a bigger battery and I believe faster RAM at 2400 MHz. The main deal breakers for me on the Asmus was the battery discharging when gaming and the smaller battery. I have spoken to MSI about the warranty sticker they slap on the internals and you are allowed to remove it to routine upgrades. I would go for the MSI.
OWNORDISOWN thank u so much sir for replying i will buy msi for sure since weight and thickness i don't mind.
I just needed to know about how's msi heating issues (if any). Ty once again. Ur reviews r really honest.
man what a fingerprint magnet
Zimba's Doom Corner lol, you would struggle to steal one of these without leaving evidence ☺️
Hi.. I was planning to get the asus gl502vs when I saw your review of msi gt62vr.. The asus has the only advantage of being slimmer and lighter whereas msi has better cooling ,sound and build quality? which one would you recommend.. and is the charger for both the laptops same size?
hari prasanth Hi Hari, yes, you summed that up well. They are basically the same specs but the big differences in my opinion in the favor of the MSI are better speakers, better build quality (mine fell off the table and not a scratch whilst a little bit of plastic did come off on the Asus after I took the back off), more fan control - you have a hardware button to active turbo fan, msi's keys can be changed to different colours - Asus is red only, and the power supply for Asus is underpowered at 180W versus every one else's at 230W. If I recall the Asus power supply is smaller in footprint too. I would definitely get the MSI over the Asus.. Thanks for watching my video!
So you mean the G-sync and the extra performance were worth trading for better build and cooling ?
I'm still hesitating between the asus and the msi. I found the ASUS 502VS at 1400 euros which is around 1500 dollars and the price is quite appealing despite its downsides. still I'm scared I'll have to return it for various reasons. should I go with the safer option ?
J.L Rawfire The MSI has Gsync too..The prices on both are now similar but I would still go for he MSI. Speakers were better, 230W power brick vs 180 and a little piece of plastic fell of my Asus. My MSI fell off the table and there was not a scratch.
ooh that's great, now the only remaining downside with the MSI is the extra 600 euros I'll have to add. Thank you very much for the quick reply and rectification. Have a nice day
The screen quality on the MSI is a little inferior to the ASUS, or should i say dimmer ..
what is your say on this ?
Hey man which laptop should I buy: Asus gl502vs, Asus gl702vm, MSI gs63vr or MSI gs73vr?
I would opt for the GTX 1070 Asus GL502Vs. Is light weight, good screen versus a TN panel. Is cool (reviews on the GL702vm are poor in that regard). Battery life is on par with the rest of your selections with added benefit of Gsync. If you desire good batter life and don't mind a smaller screen the Gigabyte Aero 14 is worth considering.
Gears of war 4, Forza horizon 3, Watchdogs 2. A deal to good to pass up plus around that time Microsoft was doing a promotional offer where if u bought gears 4 u also got codes for the other games in the series for free. How do u say score. Lol
do u think the thermals on the gpu and the cpu are okey? because i am planing to buy one of the laptop that have the new 10 series of nvidia and this is the most affordable laptop i search, but i see a lot of gameplays and i am not sure about the temps. i see some of the msi with the 1070 but that laptop is to bulky and big.
i really wanna see the review on the alienware XD
Hi, the thermals were very good in my testing. I had it running the Heaven Benchmark for over an hour and as you can see in my video it was certainly reasonable. I did do a benchmark at 1440p with an external monitor (didn't upload it as I was trying to keep the video not too long) and for that period, about 30 mins it was fine. Some people have reported that pumping those extra pixels for a long time brings the GPu to 90 degrees but that is still within spec I believe. My new Alienware 15 R3 should have arrived by now (I am travelling) and will work on so video next week so stay tuned!
Thanks man for the help , i will wait for your review of the alienware :). And another think, do u recomendó to buy this laptop?
I was trying to decide on this vs the Alienware 15 R3 so that will interesting to see your video, not a lot out there on that laptop yet. I have read a few Amazon reviews, and others, which are seeing some issues with this laptop where it uses 100% CPU for no reason. But I saw another video, linustechtips, where he explains that I think. Plus I'm sure all the bloatware needs to be removed
I do, I really do. As long as you are aware of its short comings..battery life, plastic build, and that the psu may not be powerful enough to power it fully. I didn't see any throttling at all. I did get a low fps in Metro Last light which I didn't show because of length but that was a one off I think. it is light weight which is nice for travelling. the speakers are ok, not great though. Perhaps wait for my review on the Alienware before you pull the plug? Alienware do offer 12 months free credit too.
Yes, there was quite a bit of bloat ware but that can be removed. I ended up going with the Alienware because of the 99kwH battery, better speakers, better overclockabke cpu and 12 months free credit. I'll have the review up next week for you !
that 1070 is 10% less power than desctop version gpu? why is gtx 980ti much bettter then 1070?
rezi kratsashvili I think it must be the driver used at the time. Things improved a lot with newer drivers that came out for the 1070. I ran Firestike extreme on the 980ti got 7693 points and the MSI GT62VR 6705 points which increased to 7191 when the GPU was overclocked, The AW15 R3 scored 7733 with the GPU overclocked and it had the i7 6820hk. So the laptop 1070 is about 10% below my 980Ti which is reasonable.
Yeah I know I got my laptop for $1,342 bundled with a messenger bag, mouse and mousepad, hat, and a wireless controller.
Marechan28 Gaming wow! I think I paid about $1700 for mine. Nice deal mate ☺️
17:39 lol SSD is over ten times faster than the 7200rpm drive.
I'm gonna switch from my Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition with a shitty 5400rpm harddrive (that i've been gaming on, no joke), to one of these with 32gb ram and a 512gb SSD by default.
Think i'll notice a difference? xD
That said, GTA5 is not a very good benchmark though, even my 860m and core i5 dualcore cpu, and 6gb ram laptop can run GTA5 maxed out in 1080p. What this laptop with tons of ram and a great SSD will show a biggest difference in, is ram-heavy games such as Cities Skylines or Total War.
Sad that almost all benchmarks and review videos just use extremely optimized gpu-heavy games to test, which always run extremely well on even older machines.
Baleur yes, I think your new laptop will smoke your old one☺️ Actually GTA V is very cpu dependant, you see huge gains overclocking the cpu. Sure, you probably can get 60 fps on your i5 but switch to a 120 hz monitor... Some of my other videos demonstrate this nicely. I'm uploading one today my desktop against these new laptops and it easily beats the gtx 1070 notebook in GTA V because of the faster cpu.. I think I might have Rome Total war, if I do I will throw that in the mix for sure. If not I'll do Civ V. Thanks for watching my video!
What is the screen refresh rate?
Vasco Rodrigues I'm pretty sure it is 60 hz
how much max/avg temp you hit?
ea168 I didn't keep as detailed logs as I do now but at 22:43 I show the Temps and they were quite typical, I don't recall it getting close to 90 degrees...
So it doesnt charge while plugged in?! While gaming?!!
The power supply isn't powerful enough and it was losing charge - I'm sure some of that may have been down to the system safe guarding the battery. The power brick was only 180W compared to 230W on other GTX 1070 laptops. In my Gigabyte P57xv7 review that pulled a max 255W under extreme load so you can see 180w is clearly not enough..
so this laptop sucks damn how bout msi 1070 laptops? got any reviews on those?
Yes, compared to others it wasn't as good. The MSI GT62VR I reviewed shortly afterwards, and I ended up keeping that one.czcams.com/video/xThAHLgzAMQ/video.html
damn you're a helpful geezer
Thanks ! I try my best :)
how fast the battery power drain on plugged while in gaming?
skaryote jura6 hi there. If I recall it started fairly quickly. I don't think it went below 95 % but can't be totally sure as I didnt keep watching it. It was one of the main reasons why I returned it.. Thanks for watching my video!
so basically u wont recommend this? coz im planning to get one for myself for gaming purposes
skaryote jura6 I just think there are better options out there with better build quality, better speakers and better battery life.. It is light weight so it's good for travel but I did prefer the MSI GT62VR which was cheaper too and only slightly heavier.
i see.. maybe ill look forward to peek on some reviews for the GT62VR. thank you! keep up
what is srgb rating for this?
YouKnowWho unfortunately I didn't have my Spyder5Pro when I did this so I never measured it. Sorry!
oh okay no problemo!. cheers.
And also three AAA games.
Marechan28 Gaming now you are just rubbing salt into my wounds, lol ☺️
Lol also u might consider signing up for a website called listia u get stuff for free.
I got most of my ps4 games off there. Cheers
Marechan28 Gaming You know, I thought about this about 10 years ago. We used to a have a kids TV show when I was a kid called Swap Shop where you did exactly this. I asked my programmer buddy to help me set it up but he couldn't be bothered. Another one of my ideas goes up in smoke I guess. I have loads of stuff I can put on there. Cheers!
Meh... bring back Lisa!
LOL, this was my first laptop review if I remember. Lisa was definitely my inspiration to start my channel. I think my reviews have improved since the early days.
