  • The 2024 Asus Zephyrus G16 is a gaming laptop that is incredibly thin and light compared to the competition! Not only that, but it boasts other incredible features such as a Gsync OLED display, best-in-class speakers, and a CNC aluminum chassis, easily making it one of the most premium laptops currently on the market. Specs include Nvidia RTX 4060, 4070, 4080, or 4090 graphics, and Intel’s new Core Ultra CPU’s. How do these specs hold up in 2024? Is it too good to be true? Let’s find out!
    We'll also compare it to other laptops like the Razer Blade 16, Lenovo Legion Pro 7i, and Zephyrus G14.

    1. The "VRAM modules" that I thought were left without thermal putty at 20:50 are actually the LPDDR5X RAM modules, which explains why there's no pad/putty on them, so that is actually normal.
    2. There is finally a 32GB version of the 4070 model in the U.S.! Only bad thing is, it’s more expensive. But you get the fancy new AMD Strix Point CPU: www.bestbuy.com/site/6583376.p?skuId=6583376
    3. I’m hearing that mid-year units (manufacturer date May 2024 in the info I was given) have tighter hinges with less wobble and trackpads with less rattle.

    I remember pouring over your content before (and after) getting my 2021 G15. Your optimisation guide and later, vbios guide were incredibly well done and have helped me get this machine performing better than I ever imagined possible - now reaching 70-80 frames in cyberpunk with all maxed settings (with dlss and some unofficial frame gen as well, no PT).
    The amount of effort you put into these videos is insane, especially the killer cinematic-grade visuals, and honestly the channel's criminally underrated. I hope you're able to keep creating far into the future, and I'm sure when I eventually get a new laptop (already considering the 2029 G16) this is where I'll be coming back to.

    Thanks for this amazing review, it's literally the best G16 review ever! It's the first time I decide to subscribe to a channel based only on the first video I watch, keep it up man! My unit isn't as good as yours in terms of thermals and battery life for some reason, but I really like the G-helper recommended settings section, I might need to play with that a bit, hopefully getting better results, it would be very handy if G-helper supports importing/exporting settings files, as I don't have much experience with all these setting and stuff, I would just like to test out the settings files created and tested by professionals like you instead of me going through it all. Another issue I'm having with my unit that I would like to mention is the touchpad tending to rattle when I'm just tapping; it feels very loose and it's pretty annoying. One thing that I wish ASUS had added to this laptop is the same haptic feedback to the touchpad as the Macbook and getting rid of these clicky and outdated buttons underneath the touchpad, it's the only thing that doesn't feel "premium" to me in this laptop.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  Před 13 dny +1

      Thanks for the sub! And yeah, after gaming for a while the temps will raise a little bit higher. It's also 100% okay if they hit their peak too. As long as they aren't throttling and causing frame drops, then you have nothing to worry about. And yes, touchpad rattle does seem to be a thing with some people's units. I personally prefer buttons for a physical click over haptic, but I definitely understand why people like haptic better! Especially for eliminating rattle!

I can slide it to 105W + 20W boost. The 4070 is maxed out at 115W so thats kinda weird but the increase in perfomance is about 10% (quick tests in furmark). Anyway its a fantastic laptop. Thanks for the review

      Thank you! And yeah thinking about it now, I guess that makes sense for the 4070 to max out at 115W because Nvidia’s voltage limit doesn’t really let you gain any performance beyond that really for the 4060/4070, maybe just barely

      Doesn’t look like it from what I’m seeing. There’s a chance that the upcoming “Pro Art” that they’re announcing in June could be the update to the Flow, but I don’t think that’s true. We’ll probably see a proper refresh for those next year

      I just had the stock Windows screensaver! And yes, just make sure you auto-hide the taskbar, use darker backgrounds (or just plain black), use dark mode, turn down screen brightness, turn down UI elements brightness in games (sometimes they have a setting for that), move windows around occasionally so they're not always in the same spot for hours. Make screensaver turn on after 5-10 minutes of inactivity. That should cover the basics!

Im new to pc gaming and this will be my first gaming pc and with the power of this beast looks like i can also use it for Ableton Live,Photoshop,Final Cut pro etc. Do you you have any videos on how to set up this laptop for first time beginner’s and also a more detail info on how to set up Ge Helper. Do you recommend installing Ge Helper from the get go or use the Armory software to set up the laptop? Your reply will be greatly appreciated thanks.

      Thank you!! I think most people are probably fine with Armoury Crate, but G-Helper certainly gives you some cool features like Fn Lock and custom keyboard shortcuts, and some extra tuning options that you can’t do with Armoury Crate. I’d recommend it for the 4090 G16 just because the extra 10W to the GPU is so easily accessible on G-Helper. Just slide the “GPU Power” slider all the way to the right. I have a whole video dedicated to G-Helper and setting it up on my channel :)

    Hey Josh, fairly new subscriber here. You mention at the last parts of the video how a lot of the value and appeal of these new G16s/G14s is their excellent performance in quiet mode, especially other thin-and-lights. As someone who hates fan noise, I would to see you continue benching quiet mode in laptops and ideally do some noise-normalized testing. Basically I want to know, what's the best performing laptop at 40DBs? 35DBs? Etc. Thanks for the excellent reviews and keep up the good work.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  Před 21 dnem +1

      Thank you! That's a tough one to measure at exactly a certain level of dB just because not every laptop has manual fan curves, just their preset profiles (silent/balanced/turbo) so that's sort of why I go with the Fan Noise to Time Spy ratio instead! As that has always been very representative of what to expect in a real-world scenario. But I'm always down with ways to improve. The sad thing is most laptops that have a "Manual" mode are made with the intention that you INCREASE your fan speeds, not lower them, so it ends up having adverse effects, like on the Lenovo Legion. The "minimum" fan speed they let you set is too high and it ends up just throttling like crazy or running too loud.

      Yeah, I have a little comparison to it at the end in Final Thoughts there, it just doesn’t strike me as a great competitor when the G16 already exists. Except for the upgradeable RAM. But everything else about it is just… fine. It’s not a bad laptop by any means, it’s just bigger/heavier, has a power-hungry CPU that barely performs better than the G16’s, eats battery, discharges battery while gaming, has fewer tuning options, worse display, worse speakers. Again not a bad laptop, but it’s typically the same price as the G16 in the U.S., so it kinda lost my interest. If I got it on a good deal then I may review it though

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  Před 23 dny +1

      Yeah, it'll be at least February next year before we see RTX 50 series, so that would be about 9 months that you'd have to wait depending on stock availability. If you can wait that long then absolutely do it because there will probably be some awesome improvements across the board. But if you need a laptop right now, then this is definitely one of the best around. You could also buy now and sell secondhand later, although you'll definitely come out losing a decent chunk of change going that route as it depreciates.

      Before and after. I spent way too much time on this one, lol. But there were no differences at all between before and after, so it wasn’t really necessary. The modules I put putty on ended up just being RAM so that made no difference, and the Liquid Metal was already applied pretty good from the factory so me re-spreading it just got it to about as even as it likely was before I opened it.

    Hi! This is the first laptop review video I’ve ever watched-you can imagine my surprise when I saw it was 1hour long 😂 But I sat through the whole thing, even the software segment (tho I had to do a lot of googling) - really appreciate the detailed contents with graphs and I’m sure it takes a lot of time. You’ve earned my sub and I truly hope more people view your content 🎉
    I’m a uni undergrad, and my gaming laptop (some old Aftershock model) recently started shutting down abruptly while my game is running. So now I’m looking for an upgrade or alternative gaming laptop, and wanted to see if you have any recommendations aside from the G16! The only game I play is Valorant and I am looking for a laptop that’s ideally lightweight, not too loud, and not too bulky in aesthetics

    • @NightingaleFlorine

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  Před 3 dny

      @@NightingaleFlorine Hey thanks for watching the video! Glad you enjoyed it. But yeah, all of those are insanely good laptops. If you mostly game on Valorant, then they are all going to be great choices. Another one I'm going to throw in there because you said lightweight and not too loud would be the ROG Flow X16. That one is great for those wanting a little bit lower fan noise and it has a 2-in-1 form factor with touchscreen and upgradeable RAM. That being said, you can manually lower the fan noise of all of these laptops and still have insane performance. If thinness and lightness is your goal, the 2024 G16/G14 are the best choices. At this point, I wouldn't go with the 2023 G14 unless you wanted a 4080/4090 in a 14" laptop, but maybe you do. The new ones are just so much more premium and lightweight. The new G14 would probably be my recommendation for you if you want the most portability and don't mind a 14" display. I know some people find 14" too small for gaming, so the G16 is the next best option.

    Great review, yes I will subscribe mainly because you don't upload often and doesn't have conflict of interest. I don't subscribe to any product review channels mainly because I don't buy a new phone or laptop every week and they all have a narrative they have to abide by to protect their bottom line. Still leaning more toward the Flow X16 for the upgradability and it's design gearing more toward productivity over gaming, I'm guessing they won't release a 2024 version, I'm okay waiting for a 2025 version.

      Good question! Yes, it can. I'll touch on it in the video, but I'll go ahead and spoil that it's 1000% not worth doing on the G14 😅 Although I set a world record, the temperatures went through the roof! It does NOT handle additional wattage well at all. But the previous world record was done by just a simple overclock, basically matching the Blade 14 at 140W, so all that extra wattage doesn't really get put to good use anyway.

    I had a couple of questions, as I am planning on buying this laptop. I would appreciate if you could give me some feedback.
    I saw a wifi card installed when you opened the laptop. Does it come installed already or did you buy it separately? Should we get one in the case it is not included? Just out of lack of knowledge, I don't know what are the adavantages of having one.
    Also, I would love to get the 4080 version, but in Europe the price difference is just crazy. It costs 3.400€ , which is a massive difference in comparison to the price you guys have in the US. Luckily, I do not plan on gaming too much. I mostly play games which are not very demanding, so I was thinking about getting the basic version with the 4060 and the i9. However, I don't know if this is way too overkill from the CPU side. Should I get the 4070 instead?
    On the other hand, Asus is planning on releasing an AMD version at Computex in early June. Should I wait and see the perfomance diference in comparison to Intel before I pull the trigger?

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  Před 23 dny +1

      Hey! Good questions. The WiFi chip is preinstalled so nothing to worry about there. The 4080 version is not a "must" if you don't play demanding games, the 4060 or 4070 models will do just fine. And the i9 is a great and efficient CPU, so I wouldn't call it overkill as it can handle low-power things super well too. I personally wouldn't wait for the AMD model, as the Core Ultra is already so efficient and has 16 cores. This could very well be AMD simply "catching up" by having more cores now as well, and it might even be less efficient with worse battery life, so it's kind of a roll of the dice. I just don't think there's any way it would be a big enough improvement to warrant returning one for the other. Especially since CPU isn't that important in games.
