Nice video. I not only remember my first workbench, I still have it. It's only about 5 feet long but my grandfather made it for me when I was about 17 yrs old. A few weeks later he stopped by and screwed a vise on it and told me that would come in more handy than just about any other tool I could think of using it with. I still have it also. When he died, my grandmother let me have his old stuff. Anyone remember shop class in high school? Oh the things I could make on that workbench. I had a lot of "firsts". My first socket set from Sears, a craftsman set. A sander, drill and jigsaw. I had a lot of fun doing that and he taught me to never throw away any scrap wood. He's the one that got me started in making stuff and then putting it out in the yard for sale to earn extra money. I made bird houses of all sizes and styles. I made squirrel feeders. I made one and two shelf spice racks a lady could hang on a wall above her stove so they'd be handy. One of my favorite things was a router and jig he gave me. We would cut out the sides and bottoms to make a box. No specific sizes or shapes. I just cut them out and then routed them so they fit together. Sanded and stained. Then I would cut out a lid. Some fit flush, some over hanged off the top of the box.. Then I had an idea ! (lol, sorry I talk a lot). I would take those lids and search for a pattern. I found an picture of an old racing car. I put down a piece of carbon copy paper and traced that car outline and windows and doors. I use my router to just barely cut into the top of the wood and went around that stencil. Then I blew it off, sanded the top a bit for any straggler pieces and stained it and the box. I put on some hinges and then had my very own small box with a old fashioned racing car design on the top. A car, flowers, the word recipe, the word mom , lol. Anything to make a box lid to sell. He was featured in our local newspaper a few times after he retired showing pictures of stuff he made to resell. Six foot candy canes for outside around Christmas. Five foot long benches you could sit outside under a tree or in your garage to people could sit and talk. His biggest seller was "window boxes" He'd make them and attach some metal strapping on them. He put a few screws and washers in a baggy and tape it inside so they could install it themselves. Wow, all that and more came to mind watching you build your own workbench! Thanks for a nice video!!
Believe it or not this is pretty much the first workbench I have built myself, every other one I've worked on has either been my Dad's or in someone else's shop or one that I bought second hand. I hope one day this bench becomes associated with just as many good memories as yours has!! Very cool that you still have it.
Birds of a feather flog together, as and after 22 years, just redoing my mancave shed, and a place for everything and everything in its place. New bench, storage, drawers, fridge, old wood heater I brought 10 years ago, and fixing up my own budget mess and Making our dollar go further. Good job Mike.
As a seamstress , another great use for the solid door is to cover one side with high loft quilt batting. Staple and then cover and staple canvas nice and tight. It makes a great cutting table, work bench, and wow, you can iron curtains and even bed sheets!
That was a different type of video than I usually see you do. I enjoyed watching it just the same. Definitely need to start setting up my own workshop. Great job Mike!
Great bench. In the future, you might want to twist your pigtail wires together before placing the wire nut on (I.e., better connection, less likely to loosen up and arc, etc).
Nice video. I have built a very similar workbench based on the same design. Added heavy duty casters with brakes. The solid core door is an excellent flat surface for building, and the storage underneath is a great feature for keeping tools off the top while working.
👁️👁️……Been with you for a while now…Really enjoy the versatile content you put out….I love woodworking…(Not that good)but I try…Also, very kool how you brought the edge out on the slab…Thanks for the vids…..Tommy .St Petersburg’sFL…
Not that I sew but this would make a great bench for craft projects of various types, rearrange it slightly and you have a kitchen island as well. Imagination
It’s a grizzly with a hepa filter. I don’t like it. They brought it to market too fast without working all the kinks. I had to completely disassemble and reassemble it because the fan rubbed on the thin sheet metal housing. The circuit board makes the thing do whatever it wants whenever it wants. I’d buy a dumb one with an on off switch and a good filter. All the bells and whistles on this one are just annoying.
I liked the way you attached the dust collection hose to the board. Looks like it will stay right where you want it. Where did you get the solid core door?
It one of the new grizzly hepa units. I can’t recommend it though. I had to take it apart when I got it because the fan was rubbing and the mount for the fan is super cheap thin sheet metal.
I really enjoy your videos. Sometimes, I feel like your disappointed with the amount of views you get. I imagine a video like this will get a tremendous amount of views. I know this is the bottom end of your skill level, which is probably frustrating - but keep pumping these bad boys out! I have a theory to why this is but i won't write a short story on your board!
Thanks Ryan, sometimes the views can be frustrating. I try not to dwell on it because it can impact your work. A lot of my worst work is what gets the most views! Hopefully this one does well. Thanks for watching

Thats great, you can definitely use one on sawhorses and put it away later.

"Takes a normal person a day, took me a day and a half". Love your dry humor, Mike. Great build!
Ha ha glad you appreciated that one!
02:45 I'd say the screws maintained alignment and gave additional clamping during manipulations of the assembly while the glue was curing.
Yes they certainly did.
I do appreciate craftsmanship that is innovative and serves real purpose. Good project! (Day and a half - ha!)

lol yup
Looks great. How abt a shop tour? How big is your shop?

i used desktops office types
what about adjustable casters so that you can just use a wrench to adjust to level
then the bench can be moved around when needed
