Welcome to my backyard builds. Last year I published this video • This Video Will Change... . titled "This video will change how you see wood. I promise." It's almost at 5 million views at this time. It's new and old projects completely re-written and edited into one long video.
It also features contributions from @dainermade , @JackmanWorks , @turgworks4138 , @diyforknuckleheads and @BeauMiles . I also mention @Foureyes.Furniture when talking about pallet wood is a scam and @MikeFarrington about the biscuit joiner. Go check them all out.

Sure. You see that hour and a half runtime and think, No Way!
Spend the time! Spend the time!
Thank you for spending the time and for the shout-out!
Yeah, well you can always stop and continue later. In the end if you spend 1,5h watching, you spend 1,5h watching, it's the same 1,5h you spend when watching 1,5h on youtube shorts, it's just less trash.
Invest... the time... for possible future dividends... with interest.
Very nice video! I have 1 more tip for taking pallets apart, lift it up and let it fall on 2 opposite corners. To make the nails more loose😊 much less chance of boards splitting
Man built a table out of a pallet and then went "Why not a house next?" And if that isn't the biggest mood when it comes to discovering a new hobby I don't know what is.
That's exactly how it feels-why stop at a table when you can build a house, right? Glad you're enjoying the journey!
I'm an IT Project Manager and I started out with woodworking and it's now a disease. I'm addicted, building shit is so rewarding...
Hello from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 , my name is Evan and I’m 15 years old. I found your channel recently and I love your content, I wish you the best in life, and may your father rest in peace.

I wish the best for you too buddy. Are you going to get into woodworking, or do you have something else in mind?
These are the videos people want to see. We're tired of seeing videos where the person has an entire workshop with the most high tech tools saying "Here's how to make this!"
Also stop sponsoring Betterhelp, they're known to sell data and not hire professionals. For that reason a lot of youtubers have stopped accepting sponsors from them. Also, I can't imagine how it feels. But he would've wanted you to be happy.

My personal experience: 99% of building works can be done with general hand tools at home. You purchase expensive power tools for going pro and commercial.
hello Jesper!
i'm Sara, 20, from the south of Brazil!
my father works as a carpenter since he was very young, so i always loved everything involving woodwork and all the things you can make with it. when i saw you and your daughter working together, it reminded me of when i was little and wanted to help him!
i'm sorry for your loss, i'm sure your father is very proud of you.
i absolutely loved watching you improve your work day after day, thank you for sharing with us! i would love to see more, keep moving forward!

Great video, great work and above all very inspiring. I really envy you for your house and your property - so many possibilities. But I am also very happy and appreciate what I have, small but nice. I'm delighted to have discovered your channel. Your videos are both entertaining and informative. They've inspired me to start my own woodworking projects. I'm looking forward to more content! Thank you, and I wish you continued success.
Hi Turkey!
I work in IT too, and started out building retaining walls, then moved onto a lean-to roof for the side of my house so I could sit out of the rain to have a coffee. It's so rewarding building tactical things after working with computers all day.
I need this. At 66, went from disappointing loss one week to glorious win this week to uncertain next week. I need to see some winning to remind me of a "That's the way it goes sometimes" attitude. Püt!
It sounds like you've had a rollercoaster of experiences recently. Embracing the "That's the way it goes" attitude is definitely a healthy approach. Hang in there!
❤❤ Hi Jesper I have a grandson named Jasper. We are from Oklahoma USA. I love whatcha doin so just ignore the Haters & just keep on keeping on... Ur cool man, I appreciate the therapy mention, it helps to talk to people, afterall that's all we have is eachother.
Thanks, Cody! Absolutely agree-sharing and connecting can be incredibly healing.
Kind of funny that I'm a Computer Science student finishing up his last semester, yet here I am, following the CZcams algorythm, 15 minutes into a video about woodworking before realizing that I'm completely mesmerized and enchanted by your work. Really good job with this! I'm going to keep watching this off-and-on again whenever the world wears down my optimism. I love that you and your daughter are working on these projects together, and both with buzz cuts! Two beautiful human beans just having fun with wood, fantastic.
That’s the beauty of CZcams, isn't it? Leading you to unexpected places. Glad my videos could offer some respite during your studies. Keep pushing through that last semester, and thanks for the kind words!

Hallo Christoph! It's great to hear from fellow woodworkers. Can't wait to share more with you.
I made mine from pallets, on pressure treated 4x4s'. Cattle panel wrapped the palettes across the tops. Six pallets and a couple of two by fours for the door. Fours no rot. This was a great video.

24 year old dude from Western NY, USA. Love the video and if you've never heard of him I highly recommend looking into a man by the name of Richard Proenneke. Decided at about 50 years old to move to Alaska and build a cabin by himself with hand tools, with his only contact being a bush pilot bringing him the essentials. Awesome story and a personal dream I have.
Thanks for the recommendation-I'm a big fan of Proenneke's incredible story, too.

Hello from Arizona, USA! My first time watching your channel. I didn’t want the video to end. Beautiful land you have. I was amazed at your projects and determination. My son and husband and I built a big chicken house. The base was a huge pallet we found out in the desert where we lived at the time. Saved a lot of time and money. That was over 7 years ago and it was moved to its current location over 100 miles on a trailer. It is still intact and has housed many hens over the years. You’re right…great memories from building that chicken house. I think I loved the drawer fronts you built the best. It literally looked like stacked logs under your work bench. It was absolutely beautiful. A work of art. Great video!
Hello back to Arizona! Your chicken house adventure sounds amazing-thanks for sharing that. It’s these kinds of projects that really make a mark. Glad you enjoyed the video!
carpenter of 10 years from the uk here. watching this on a saturday morning while feeling under the weather. thanks for uploading
as someone with no woodworking interest, I love this video. I love the fact that you are also using this as a way to do things with your family. The fact that you were making the cabin with your daughter just for some reason puts a big ol smile on my face every time there is footage of it. Reminds me of when my father owned a house building company and would take me and my brother to the sites and we would help with some stuff, as well as be absolutely reckless kids and play on the roofs of houses and what-not. I hope some day to be able to do something similar with children of my own. Amazing work brother, even if you had to join a few wood-related cults to get here!
That's such a wonderful memory to share, thank you! I'm glad our project could bring some joy and nostalgia your way. Here's to creating those moments with your future kids too!
Hi Jesper, the drill that cuts the wood plugs from the board for filling the holes is called a "plug cutter", thanks for the video :)
Hi Mark, thanks for the clarification-plug cutter it is! I appreciate the support.
Hi Jesper, I am a South African, who live and work in China for the past 8 years now. I miss having that clarity of mind when out in nature doing things with my hands. It is all about city and city work / life here. Luckily have motorcycles to get freedom.
It sounds like you've got quite the adventure in China, Johnny. Here's to finding those moments of clarity!
Every video you make is entertaining! It's a wonder that you have only 212k subscribers when you should be up there with the milions. Cheers and kudos to you for all your work and videos. You have taught me so much, not just in how to build stuff but also the positive attitude to have when doing it.
Thank you so much! It's comments like yours that keep me motivated. Glad you've been enjoying the videos and picking up not just skills but also the attitude!
What a pleasure to hear a Danish accent! I moved from Seattle to Copenhagen for a postdoc, and got to know a lovely family there. In a foreign land with no tools, I got itchy fingers, and I did little repairs and odd jobs on their farm. Love the Danish sensibility, and the Danish sense of humor.

Hello from the UK, I'm a fellow self-taught carpenter, as well as a fairly bad wood carver. It's delightful to see someone who really enjoys their work.
As long as you enjoy it, you don't have to be perfect, you learn a little every day.
Hey there, I'm a Uni student from Jamaica! I studied metal work and machining in HS but was always curious about woodworking. This video is pretty refreshing and inspiring as I've been toying with the idea of starting a CZcams channel myself! I always held myself back because of thoughts about not having the right tools / resources but this was a reminder to just start with what I have and continue to be resourceful. Keep up the great work!

Hey Jasper! I‘m a 29 year old guy from center Germany, awesome work and I love to see your passion, it‘s amazing and inspiring. I learned the carpentry-job for 3 years and you are the best example, that you can do and learn everything just if you have the heart for it!! Thanks a lot, I will stay. May your dad rest in peace, looking down at you and your family and smile.
Hello from Germany, Johnny! Your words truly warm my heart. It's amazing to hear from someone skilled in the craft. Keep that passion alive, and thank you for staying with us.
I love pallets so much that my friends joke about getting me a van full of pallets for my birthday. My way of processing them is with a multitool, cutting the nails between the boards. It's very fast, keeps the boards at good length and the nails give a good rustic look.
That sounds like a perfect birthday gift for a pallet enthusiast! Your method with a multitool sounds efficient-keeps the rustic look while making the most of the materials.
Hi Jasper, Utkun here from Turkey. I just want to say that we used to have a little farm, me and my dad used to spend our free time and go for our dad&son adventures like building a treehouse and stuff. Thanks for sharing that, Utkun. It’s those memories that make these projects so special. Glad to bring back some good ones for you!
Kia Ora,
My mum is from Denmark (first language I ever spoke), Dad is from Invercargill New Zealand. Brother is born in Plymouth England. I'm born in Grimsby England. Dad's a classic wooden boat builder, mum was working at the London Seamans Mission at the time. After he'd circumnavigated (and decided on religion half way through) on the yacht he'd built, he was over there in England. Met mum and blah blah. Bought a 78ft wooden fishing boat in Denmark, named it King David and converted it to liveaboard ketch. Sailed to the Falkland Islands where they set up the Falkland Islands Lighthouse Seamans Mission and ran it for around 6yrs. Then we all packed up and came here to Whangarei NZ where we've been ever since. My wife is from Erie, Pennsylvania and we've got a 6yr old son. Can't have any more though seeing as she's got an extremely rare blood disorder/cancer/concoction of sorts.
I used to do crane/trucks etc, but after she got sick and I got bored of sitting around I decided to take the plunge and finally study towards something I really want to do, so am now in my second year of a Bsc of Applied Science in Environmental Management with the dream of getting a MsC or a PhD in either mycology, freshwater ecology or biology, or marine biology or ecology.
I love working with wood in my spare time, and have an original combination Coronet Major lathe which I'm hoping to get pieces for. Other than woodworking, I'll be anywhere near, on, or in the sea.
Keep up the good mahi Jesper!
I love scrolling through comments and seeing a bit of Māori🤩😂😂
Why do you think your life story is appropriate here?

@Thegr8aarod Sending you strength during this tough time. Continuing their dreams is a beautiful way to honor their memory. Hang in there.
@cryptokimo7558 Thank you for the kind words and for sharing your story. It's tough, but you're right, they live on through us.
Martin from Poland. These are the kinds of videos I love finding on CZcams! I've been doing some small woodworking and rn I'm starting the first construction project and people like you- regular people without top of the line equipment for every single task along the way and boatloads of cash to throw at obstacles- are a great source of inspiration and actually helpful advice.
I'm building a racing pigeon loft with my dad. Majówka is around the corner, the weather is said to clear up (it's been misserable the past two weeks) so it'll be a nice project to work on.
Hi,JM

Mustafa, from Turkey.I would like to say, you are living the dream. Thanks for sharing, cheers :)
Mustafa, thank you! Living the dream takes one plank at a time. Cheers back at you from Denmark to Turkey! 🍻
Hi Jesper, Colombian guy from New Jersey, United States.
Starting to help my Spaniard wife on art projects and really liking to play with wood and nature.
That sounds like a wonderful collaboration with your wife, Federico! Enjoy your creative journey with wood and art.
Hi Jesper! I am 25 and from Norway, and I really admire your optimistic outlook on just learning as you go. I recently inherited/bought my grandpa's farm, and I'm kind of in the same boat as you where I am just trying as I go. Great video :D
Hei from Denmark! That sounds like an amazing adventure with your grandpa’s farm. Best of luck, and keep enjoying the journey!
Hi neighbor, I live in Bremen, Germany, and have been to Denmark twice. One time, of course, my family and I visited LEGOland. 😄 A beautiful place you have there! Thanks for this wonderful entertaining and instructive video! I am half way through and enjoying every second of it. Keep up the good work!
Hello neighbor! I’m glad you enjoyed your visits here. LEGOland is indeed a fantastic place. Thank you for your kind words, and I’m thrilled you’re enjoying the video!
HI Jesper "the zen woodworker", greetings from Italy!! I always love watching your woodworking journeys and appreciate very much the positive thinking coming from your words. Ciao!!
Ciao, Piluniuru! Thanks for joining me on this woodworking journey. Your kind words from Italy are much appreciated!
Absolutely entertaining to watch!! One of the best videos I've watched in a while. Keep up the great work and I love your projects! Thank you, Greg. Born in Iowa USA, now reside in Florida. Really great video👍👍!!
Thanks a ton, Greg! I'm thrilled you enjoyed the video that much. Greetings from Denmark to Florida!
Nice having your own forrest. Kinda makes it easier to get started.
Pedantic detail: At 23:45 you said you used a half lap joint on the cabin frame. That is actually a joint that is almost never talked about in modern times called a scarf joint! In the Medieval period these joint were often made overly complex by craftsmen as a way of signing their work. A carpenter would become known by the specific way they made their scarf joints. In many old churches in England (and presumably elsewhere in Europe) you can find a completely unnecessary scarf joint placed inconspicuously in the corner among the rafters. This is how carpenters whose names have been lost to history are known to have built several different buildings!
In 400 years, someone will find your cabin and be able to ascertain that it was built by Jesper, the famous man whose signature scarf joints were so confident he did not bother worrying about lateral forces or or horizontal tension!!!
(j/k - I love your videos and your work is beautiful! It's inspiring and genuinely touching to see someone so willing to tackle such a huge project with their daughter)
Thanks, Sara, for that detailed insight! I love learning more about these historical techniques and the story about scarf joints is fascinating. Imagine being remembered centuries later through your unique craftsmanship! Thanks for enjoying the videos and for the wonderful support!
I saw that joint in my grandfathers barn, built by my great grandfather. It was on rafters that spanned 40 ft, I was adding a outdoor kitchen on my house and it was 21 ft long, I used that same joint to make those rafters.
So despite my wife helping to come up with the idea for this video, I had put off watching Jesper's Backyard Builds for a few weeks, as I wanted to give it the time it deserved and mistakenly thought, _ "Oh! This will be another compilation of build videos I have seen before so, no rush." _ *Oh how wrong I was.* This morning I came home from 12 hours of night shift and my baby daughter had kept my wife up the whole night cranky daddy had left her once again. So I took her to let my wife sleep and together we settled into the calming tones of our favourite Vikiing Woodworker. She was asleep in my arms in 5 minutes, and in that time I had already worked out this was not just another compilation video... it was art. Thank you Jesper, you are inspirational in the true sense of the word. (Meaning I fully intend to stea.... learn from your editing style and completely rethink how I want to present my next long-format video.) 😅🤔
Firstl, thank you for coming up with the idea for the backyard builds at all. And wow, thank you for such a touching story and the incredible compliment! It's wonderful to hear how the video has been a part of your family time and inspired you creatively. I'm honored!
Hey from Canada! I've always loved your work, but more importantly your narration and humour is the best! Good work getting here, looking forward to seeing you continue growing!
Hey there! Thanks so much, I’m thrilled you enjoy the humor and narration. Cheers to more projects and growth!
Hi Jespar!! My name is Alex from England, i have just come across your video and find it very inspiring, I've been wanting to build a coffee out of pallet for a very long time but been hesitant to do so. Watching this has encouraged me to just get up a do it!! Thank you !
That's awesome, Alex! Go for it, and feel free to reach out if you need tips along the way.
I'm John and I live in Sacramento California. I'm an old woodworker (63) and I really love what you're doing. Keep it up and I'll keep following your journey!
Hi John from Sacramento! Always great to hear from fellow woodworkers. Keep enjoying the craft!
Hi Jasper, I'm from Canada. It has long been a dream of mine to build a log cabin with my sons. I am the mother of four city boys, so I don't know when that will happen, but they are all handy so its not an impossibility. Very inspirational to see you teaching your daughter how to use tools and showing her that building things is not out of reach for her.
Jesper. The name is Jesper...
@rosetealatte9282 Hi there! Building a log cabin sounds like a wonderful dream to share with your sons. It’s never too late to start planning, and it’s fantastic that they are handy!
@jesper1406 Indeed, the name's Jesper. But I also react to Jasper, which I just not as common in Denmark.
Sorry for your loss Jesper. Sending prayers from Sweden
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, they are very much appreciated.
Hello Jesper,
You've made amazing progress in 2 years. I congratulate you again for this. nice video. And I still continue to watch.
Hi Mehmet, thank you very much!
Im 15 and this video is amazing. Ive always wanted to live in the countryside and build whatever i want with the materials around me. Your living my dream life dude!
Hey, that’s the dream, right? Never too early to start planning for it, mate. Thanks for watching!
The algorithm sent you to me, Jesper. Enchanted by everything, your delivery with great sense of humour, your lovely home and learning how to play with the toys (oops, tools!) and the use of discarded wood. I make collage from waste paper and loved your wooden cookie collage on the drawers, it ticked all the boxes for good use and composition. All best from just outside of North West London, UK! I might add that I am a 63 year old woman and on the strength of watching your video from beginning to end, I am now being sent adverts for enhancing my (non-existent!!!) manhood.
Thank you for such kind words! It's great to hear my projects resonate with fellow creators, even paper collage artists! Humor and creativity know no bounds. Cheers from Denmark to North West London! 😂🛠
Hi there from New Zealand, I really enjoyed your video! as someone who is starting to get more interested in woodworking it is really interesting to see someone who has delved into the journey
LOVE the workbench! Everything else is great, too, but that workbench is my favorite.
Thanks, Robert! Really glad you liked the workbench. It’s one of my favorites too.
Hi Jesper, big fan from Australia. I would like to personally apologise for Uncle Knackers. He’s the exception, not the norm for us 😂😂😂
Can I say I watched Dainsey’s video today where his son made a log bench to sell, and you bought it so he could give it to his Pop. You are a gem mate, a true quality human. Keep doing your thing!
Hi there! No apologies necessary, mate; Uncle Knackers is a legend in his own right! Thanks for the huge compliment, truly appreciated. Cheers from Denmark to Australia!
Hello, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the loss of your father. He was clearly a big influence and I'm happy to see that your daughter is getting your experience in her life. Passing it on to the next generation is the best way.
Love your videos and your humor.
Hello from Milwaukee! Passing on these skills to my daughter is indeed a treasure, and I’m glad that resonates with you. Thank you for your kind words and support.
Hi Jasper, I’m from Saskatchewan Canada, and from what I hear it’s a lot like where you live. I love this video, it’s pretty much everything I want to do, as I have a sawmill and just built myself a dedicated woodworking shed using only sawmilled wet lumber. I can relate to pretty much everything in this video. Great video and good luck in the future, cheers from Canada 🍁 🍻
Cheers, Saskatchewan! Sounds like we're kindred spirits with our wood and sheds. Keep sawing and building!
Wow, how rewarding to do a build together with you rdaughter. All the best to you all. You've made this a very sympathatic channel.
It truly is rewarding. Thanks for the kind words and support!
Perfect way to kill 1.5 hours while I dream of becoming a full time creator. TY
Thanks my friend. Let me know if I can help you become a full time creator.
Haha did exactly the same thing! Wanted to get off that desk and into the garden, pull out all the tools and piles of junk wood then start building!
This is one of the best videos i have ever watched on youtube. Blessings from Türkiye!
Thank you so much, Erdem! Your kind words mean a lot. Blessings to you in Türkiye!
Thank you - this is so inspirational, funny, and your daughter’s laughter connecting your family story is so heartwarming. ❤ You are indeed blessed to be able to do what you do but we are also blessed that you share your talent and insights with us in such an original way! Keep on going and using what you have! I’m from S. Florida - not a good place to find old wood that is usable since the bugs and water will destroy it quickly, so pallet wood and trashed furniture are my go to sources of wood.
Thank you for such kind words, Andi! It’s wonderful to hear how much you’re enjoying the videos. Sending the best from Denmark to S. Florida!
Hi Jesper, im Sebastian from Bavaria, Germany. Im one third through your video and its amazing. Will enjoy the rest now. Have a nice time and thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Sebastian! Enjoy the rest of the video.
I have seen the project videos but still was happy to watch this compilation. I love all of them but have a particular fondness for the cookie drawer work table. It just looks so cool!
The cookie drawer work table does stand out, glad you like it!
Amazing video!
I’ve always wanted to start doing this kind of stuff myself but have never really had the time nor money to begin (I’m a 23 year old chemistry masters student, so a lot of time goes to my studies). I became a member of Stockholm makerspace (which is a kind of a shared and crowdfunded workshop in the middle of the city, perfect for people who want to build stuff but don’t have the space for their own workshop) which has so far been a superb compromise, but that personal workshop is always irresistibly tempting.
I love the way you approach your projects with more of a practical (you hating taking measurements and such) and sustainable approach in mind. I’m definitely more of a overthinker, measuring everything twice, preferably designing on the computer and hating every single finished product due to the small imperfections that really are unavoidable 😁
I’d love to learn more, so keep up the great work!
Hälsningar från Sverige!
(Greetings from Sweden!)
Hi Jesper! I'm Toni from Finland and I found your channel on my own research for woodwork 😊 I really enjoy your story telling videos 🔥 keep going!
Hej Jesper, greetings from Israel 🇮🇱
I love your videos and they fill me with inspiration! Your story, your amazing journey really touched me. Sorry for the loss of your father, and was happy to hear your daughter’s laughter while you did the voice over.
I lost my dad when I was 19, and my mom when I was 34.
My dad used to take me on weekends, driving in his old Volvo picking scrap wood and then building all kind of stuff in our back yard.
Your family is lucky to have you and I wish you all the best! Looking forward for more of your videos ❤
Hej from Denmark, Liran! Thank you so much for sharing your story, and I’m glad my videos can offer some inspiration. Sorry for your losses; it’s touching to connect over shared experiences and the laughter of loved ones.
