Hackberry is a nice hardwood and has some nice patterns in it. WOW what a beautiful door and frame, that is a lot of talent. My brother does beautiful woodworking also.
What your Dad said is right: Opportunity! Also: Beauty does not equal perfect. Wild weeds growing in a roadside culvert are beautiful. A broken pottery shard is beautiful. Live edge is beautiful. You have an eye for it.
This shop is so much bigger, well equipped and it has to be more enjoyable to work on projects. I could watch you do one of these projects and never see any of the issues you point out. The work you do is so beautiful!
What a beautiful door, one forgets they door can be a piece of art as well is something that you hang on the wall. Last week I had to go to the orange box store and buy a door for a rental unit made of cardboard it makes me even more appreciative of your craftsmanship and pride in workmanship.
Well take solace in the fact that those store bought doors are just an incredible bargain! Making a door without factory tooling takes a very very long time.
I used to love wood working. I never threw away any scrap wood. I made jewelry and coin boxes and they always sold fast. Today's society staples or glues joint. Dovetail or die!! Plus, it is one of the most relaxing things I ever did. You realize that you missed dinner at 5:30 and it's 10pm. I love your setup. I still own all my grandfathers old tools. Wood clamps hanging up of different sizes and his prized chisels....good memories. Nice video!
Nice, I'd like to start making some boxes, I think it's a great way to build some unique skills. I know what you mean about missing dinner, all too easy to get lost in what you are working on.
@@50Acres My nephew was about three years old. I made him a wooden box about the size of a cigar box. I printed out a locomotive picture, sized for the lid. I traced it out and used a router to cut it out. He was huge on Thomas the Tank and now he had his own train box. I told him he could keep important stuff in there. He's 22 and still has it haha. He uses it for change on his dresser. After I did that. I decided to make a couple more. Then I got an old style racing car for a lid. I got a football. I got an airplane. I had a jump rope, a tea pot and a rag doll. I had almost 50 as I recall. I opened my garage........ on halloween, that way kids could get candy and people could see the boxes. I sold ever single one that day. I was pumped. So it became a side hobby with nice additional cash flow from scrap wood I usually got free.
Nice work, it is good to see we still have some craftsmen that can do the caliber of work you do. Nice spalting, never would have thought of using hackberry. Looks GREAT, GOOD WOOD!!!!
Whoever named the tree Hackberry didn’t know what the future held for hack.....What beautiful wood though, I’ve never seen Hackberry and it’s gorgeous, absolutely love it, nice rich colors. Now, about that door, you hit it out of the park!!! Loved every second of the build, the thin strip of walnut in the curves was brilliant. I’m so happy you have a wood shop of your own and happier you share the results, fantastic, thank you.
I really enjoy watching you work in your shop, Mike. My dad was a cabinet maker and would take me with him to the shop with him when I was a young girl. The scent of wood is still one of my favorites. You point out the imperfections in your process but I tend to like them knowing that what was built was made by hand and not by a production CNC machine. The door turned out great. Can't wait to see it in the cabin. Best regards to you and Sarah.
I used to do the same thing, my Dad was a shop teacher, I was pretty much glued to his side whenever he was working in his shop. Lots of fond memories there.
Can't find the words. "Beautiful," "magnificent," "gorgeous" don't even come close. We had a big, wonderful hackberry tree on our farm in Texas. As live trees they are quite unique, but I never knew the wood was so attractive.
The figure in the Hackberry and the live edge are beautiful. The walnut adds another dimension to the door. That and your dad was right. Don't beat yourself up about the mistakes. That makes you freeze up. Think about how you are going to fix them. Smart man teaching an important lesson. I have always loved the ribbons that the planers make. As a little girl, I would watch my grandfather planing in his workshop/barn, and I was mesmerized by those incredibly beautiful thin strips. Solid wood becoming plyable! Thank you for sharing this with us. Such a joy to watch! Blessings on all your endeavors. 🕊🦋
The hackberry turned out to be really pretty. The planer ribbons I thought were extra cool because they were from 3 types of wood when I was planing down the strips. Glad you enjoyed it.
Hey Mike. The Beauty of the door speaks to your craftsmanship and to your creativity as well. It was amazing how all those precise cuts came together, so easily it seems. I love watching you create and the real magic happens when you apply the finish and the wood comes alive. It must be such a great feeling when you see the final creation. Beautiful! Cheers.
I'm a master finisher, learned from my Grand pa and father then worked as a lead person in a very old cabinet shop then moved into the oldest boat builder in Maine and worked in some of the most spectacular vessels. I love your wood selections, and the live edge is very country style that is warm and very trendy, I love it looks awesome.
Enjoyed your video. So cool to see you woodworking in your new shop. What a great space. I dig the unpainted walls...really shows the history. You must love working in there. The hackberry is beautiful. If you hadn't told us, I would have assumed it was some exotic, super-expensive wood. Looking forward to seeing you hang it. Your videography just keeps getting better. You musta spent a lot of time editing all those cuts. Thanks, Mike!
Hi David, thank you! It's so nice to be in the shop! My friend convinced me not to paint the walls and im really glad! That video took a long time to edit, I actually brought my memory card home and edited my footage each day, had I waited to the end it would have been too daunting a task.
Yea me either. I just got it because it was cheap and the guy I got it from said it works fine the knock against it is the black staining which is very common. Since that didn’t bother me I figured why not.

Never rush your work! Always take your time and be relaxed. My dad used to tell me when I was learning, "woodworking is a romantic dance!" "It's soft and warm, it's a swift movement that glides together to make one steady stride!" Never force it! You're still learning., it'll come with time! I have to admit, your videos have been getting better! You're more relaxed and you've been owning your mistakes! You're being you! Always remember that you're not here to impress anyone! The door looks great. I agree with you, let's not forget to give a shout out to the tree. I look forward to seeing the installation video. Thanks for sharing your ideas and skills with us. Best wishes. :)
Mike, only you will know all the minor “mishaps “, as you say. You’re an honest man because you point them out. But if you didn’t, and just showed us the finished product, most people would never know. Nice piece. It’ll look great as the cabin bathroom door (I’m assuming that’s where it’ll go).
You must be the one, of whom the legend speaks about, who sharpened the Sword Of Heros in Kung Fu Panda! The dream shop is kicking in all gears man! Woohoo hoooooo! I think the inlay accent was perfect! Not one curve is the same but it is all the same! Always remember perfection is imperfection! Stay safe and healthy!
lol, I'm actually kinda mediocre when it comes to sharpening, I basically do the minimum required. The shop is great, really nice to have a productive space to work in.
You have a beautiful shop & a nice collection of wood working equipment. The door is a piece of art with the , spaulting (blueing as I always called it ) . Thank you for sharing. 👍👍😊
Hi Mike, I just watched the install first then came back to watch the building of the door. Your quite an artist in your own right. It takes time and patience to do what you do. Just like me with designing and creating cakes and pastries. I’ve been laid up at home for the last 5 weeks after knee surgery but I’m back at work and doing pt. What an absolutely beautiful door. Thanks so much for recording and sharing the start to finish production. If it was me, I would be too afraid to install it and have people rubbing by it all the time. LOL. Its a work of art and I would want to just hang it on the wall above my couch. :) Also, the piano music playing softly in the background was a nice touch. Can't wait to see more workshop videos. Also, I love that you kept the blood stain in the video clip. Everyone who has ever tried carpentry knows there will be red at some point in the process :)

The street she lives on is named after these trees and ours is the last on our street if not town… it’s the weirdest yet most beautiful in its own way, almost like it grew at Hogwarts or some magical, fictional place with its bizarre rounded rolls on its wonky trunk and the texture of the bark is unlike anything I’ve seen before. @@50Acres Thank you, I’m not sure why they aren’t grown more or if it’s become an endangered species. I hope not bc they are massive, beautiful, very unique trees. I love your videos. I have just completed watching all the cabin videos. I binge watched them in a week. Great job. I will continue watching. Keep it up!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. I know it was a challenging door to make but you did great job 👍. Thanks for all the narration and explanation during the process. I look forward to watching it get installed at cabin.
Great job Mike. I really like the shop videos. The editing on this was just right for me. I like the workflow and commentary at the end. Good job. Keep ‘em coming
Thank you, it seems we are lucky in our part of the state in that the wind is taking the pollution and acid rain in the opposite direction. I really hope the repercussions are not too disastrous for those affected.
Some years ago I had to remove a huge, but hollow hackberry from my yard. I saved a cross cut to count the rings, then just left it on a backyard chair. In less than a year it was history. So, I'm guessing it wouldn't be a good wood for any exterior uses. Nice looking shop!
Excellent Video! Mistakes are what they are (Learning Opportunities) and there is always something to be gained from the experience whether you're the doer or the watcher. I'm getting ready to jump into doing some doors here in the next couple months and this video along with a few others I've watched has really helped get my head wrapped around the process. Thank you very much for all the time it takes to make and share a video like this it's much appreciated.
Bit of a scary thought that this door is a window into Joel's mind, but it's a really great expression of your thinking. Very few people have the ability and skills to put a pipe dream into a rough opening.
Great job well done. One word of caution the when you have to hammer the joints together one day you will find the glue will split the joint open. Don’t ask me how I know. Lol.
Beautiful door and beautiful craftsmanship. Interesting choice of wood -- hackberry. My parents had an old hackberry tree on their property - large ants loved the tree. When we took it down the entire center was hollow. It was look great in the cabin.
I don't know what else to say Mike other then that door is sexy. Shop looks like it works great. I find it amazing how fine of a slice a sharp chisel can take off a piece of wood.
👍 Dig the squig man, nice job. I like that center punch and the tools you are acquiring. Good learning experience on not using freehand for certain things as the eye will be drawn right to any "imperfections" and take concentration away from the fine work around it. I still screw up in a hurry sometimes and try to cheat, always regretting it later.
A craftsman in his natural environment.
cor! wish i had this level of skill with wood!!! that is a beaut of a door
Thank you Geoff

I can watch you build all day.. That snickarglädje is in everything you do. What a beautiful door.
Haha I love that word!
For whatever reason, I find the chisel work especially enjoyable to watch.
Sarah likes it too, it's strangely calming.
Maybe it's just me, but I love the sound/feel of a sharp chisel cutting wood.

Thank you very much for all the time it takes to make and share a video like this it's much appreciated.
Hey thank you man, I agree, I've never gone into a woodworking project knowing exactly everything that's for sure. Glad it helped you!
You always do such beautiful work!
Thank you bud
Still. a piece of art!
Thanks!
Love it❤ Have a great week! (Kansas)
Thank you! You too!
Beautiful door. Sadly sometime in the future when we’re all dead and gone some clown is going to paint it red. Still it’s a great piece of art.
oh I sure hope not, I will come haunt them!
Bit of a scary thought that this door is a window into Joel's mind, but it's a really great expression of your thinking. Very few people have the ability and skills to put a pipe dream into a rough opening.
Ha ha, you don't want to see too far into that window!!
Great job well done. One word of caution the when you have to hammer the joints together one day you will find the glue will split the joint open. Don’t ask me how I know. Lol.
Oh no, I hope that doesn't happen. I did clean them up a bit after the dry fit.
Beautiful door and beautiful craftsmanship. Interesting choice of wood -- hackberry. My parents had an old hackberry tree on their property - large ants loved the tree. When we took it down the entire center was hollow. It was look great in the cabin.
Thanks John, Hackberry was fun, I really didn't know anything about it when I chose it other than it looked cool.
Your work is amazing!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful!
I don't know what else to say Mike other then that door is sexy. Shop looks like it works great. I find it amazing how fine of a slice a sharp chisel can take off a piece of wood.
Hey Jerry, thanks man. The shop is great, its so nice to have a work area set up how I want it.
....NICE WORK, LOOKS GOOD, KEEP WELL...
Thanks, will do!
Thanks Todd, those center punches are from Lee Valley, I finally broke down and ordered them.
Absolutely beautiful! You always have such a can do attitude, great job!
Thank you Neil!
always enjoy your content - thx.
Thank you!
good work there Mike you very good carpenter
Thanks Kriss!
I think it looks wonderful that you spent the time on it like you have in all that in the desi'm it's such a pretty piece of wood for a door
Thanks Rudy!
