If something like that mouse thing happens again, you should try a wet/dry shop vac to clean it out. You could suck out the dead critters AND the gross water TOO, making it a MUCH less unpleasant task.

I think a shop vac would have been a handy tool for that job. I've been harvesting rain water at our cabin using a DIY first flush system and an IBC tote as a storage tank; it has worked fantastic for about 4 years now. Anyway, great cabin build, and thanks for sharing your cabin adventures.

Oh my friend, I can so relate to what you just had to do. I live in a very old community near a river and have had a rat issue for all of the 26 years I've lived here. The worst is when they get into one of my rain barrels and can't get out. I've found them anywhere from long dead to still alive. It's totally gut wrenching and nauseating. Now that you have the pond filled a good bit, hopefully the mice will go towards easy access water instead of trying to get into your cistern.

Great job, I agree with others who suggested a wet/dry shop vac but then of course you'd need to clean that too. I would recommend putting a small eye bolt in the cap and hanging it with a cord above the filler pipe with plenty of slack. That way it's a reminder to replace it when you're done. At least I need things set up that way, I've learned to hold a screw in my hand when I go to get the right screw gun tip so I remember why I went to the garage in the first place, absent mindedness runs in the family. Always have too many things on my mind at the same time. Multi tasking is more of a curse than a gift, horribly inefficient at the end of the days work.

I have use a 210 gallon tank in the rear of my truck for my remote system. But it is only used for a system connected to a sauna stove. The hot water is generated by a copper heat coil in the chimney. The water temp can be boiling hot, but drinking water is carried in. We take clean water for granted. Very sad. 😱😝😰 when you said it was weighing heavily on you for so long, we felt so bad for y'all here. I can only imagine what was going thru your minds. My anxiety for you guys and your health was up there too. My initial thoughts were,,,, Since you have the filling pipe port from the side of your house, is there an inline valve you could put on that pipe just before it drops into the cistern? That way the entire length of that filling pipe could be totally full of your sanitizing solution also. Then I was thinking and wondering if your set up could handle a high heat water flush from the input port? After you run a few million gallons thru it all, LOL, maybe get your water temps as high as you can and recirculate that hot water back from the outside port from an inside spigot. Then evacuate it all out and refill your cistern for use. Just a thought? Stay safe and healthy! Enjoy this warm weekend here in Ohio.

yea, sure did, we do have a creek, the pool just fills by rainwater. We've been in a drought the past month and a half so its a bit low.

Oh man, that was gross but you’ve cleaned it all and I would totally work with that! Yeah, the shower slope is perfect, nice to see that in action! The swim pond looks great too!

Great job Mike, way to highlight the good with the not-so-good. We totally get it and understand. Otherwise, it would be called a cabin and 50 acres only the good days.

The joys of wild life......on our acrerage we were infested by deer, mice, snakes, stink bugs and squirrels. They distroyed pecans and everything we planted. So we moved to the beach and living in new cottage homes😀👍
