      This is part of the reason, the other reason is that it's much simpler than it was previously. Why wouldn't you have your game available to more people? Let's not pretend, we will see a game launched in the next 5 years where the same release version runs on PS4, PS5 and PS6.

    I tend to agree with the idea that smaller devs (or larger ones like Activision) should make their games available wherever they can run. For example like Alex pointed out, on PC, if your system meets minimum specs... you can run it... or rather devs can sell it to you. This is part of the beauty of PC (you can spend thousands to get the cutting edge or you can build a system in line with your budget and needs).
    The PS4 also, has the advantage of being the far more optimized than you can realistically achieve off any PC GPU so it can run things that you wouldn't expect equivalently spec low end PCs to run.

    This Console era should become known as the 'Lost Generation'... It seems the PS5/XBX were REALLY only capable of running SLIGHTLY enhanced PS4 quality games at a solid 4k/60fps. However to make them actually look 'Next Gen' developers tried to include advanced Ray Tracing features, which the hardware is just NOT able to handle. Graphics fidelity has started to hit diminishing returns now, what the newer consoles have now are higher framerates and higher resolution, but consoles cannot game at native 4k with 60fps with price constraints. And if you're going past those constraints then you might as well buy a PC. I'd say resolution will also start to get diminishing returns once we go past 4k.

      @@bogstandardash3751 Well I'm not too sure if I agree with that. I understand where you are coming from. But I think most games are playable today at a native 4k at like a 3070/80 tier or higher. The issue is when we start adding things in like ray tracing and ultra high texture and memory presets. Developers have always been able to produce graphical features which exceed the current available consumer level of technology. They just wouldn't do it, I assume for multiple reasons. Cost, consumer frustration and confusion at why their game isn't working, time constraints or whatever.
      I guess it just depends on how someone views it. Are max settings, RT path tracing and such in the game the intended way to play? Or is it just a bonus? Because again, since devs can always make a game more demanding, hardware will never be powerful enough to run the absolute most demanding games out there. But looking at games released within the past cycle of GPU releases, I think things are just fine.

    • @balloonb0y677
      @balloonb0y677 Před 16 dny +1

      @@noodles9345 you’re forgetting about virtualized geometry and textures. With this new technology that replaces the traditional LOD process means any gpu that meats the hardware requirements can render infinite details with no extra processing power at all.
      This is because instead of rendering an entire asset, the gpu only has to render details the size of pixels. So resolution is quite literally the only limiting factor in graphical processing.

    On the bright side, doing previous gen releases might mean fewer devs being laid off if it means keeping a larger team around to work on the last gen versions. Let’s say one have 500M to spend what is lower risk creating 2 big games that will take years to produce or create one big game and 8 smaller ones 2x10M, 2x20M, 2x30M and 2x40M even if some fail, some will break even but do not earn much some will be a hit with 9 games total there is a better chance of earning that with two large scope projects.
      We saw this multiple times big budget games failing, smaller games sure many failed but there were also hits A way out, it takes two, Hellblade and most probably many more.
      I do not get what cost so much that spider-man 2 was 3x more expensive than the 1st one, sure this one most probably earned a lot just due to IP but if the budget was kept lower would it earn less or the same amount if it would be the same the profit would be greater.

    i think there’s an issue in that so many of the games we’re getting even *can* run on ps4 and xbox one. i know this is an unpopular opinion around here, but this desire to make 4K (or at least resolutions approaching 4K) and / or 60fps standard on these current consoles is holding games back. they’re a definite upgrade from last gen, but not so much that we can be faced with a pick 2 situation and take all 3. if we want 4K and 60fps, what we’re gonna get is essentially ps4 grade games running with a cleaner presentation. nothing new, no boundaries pushed, no new ground broken, just same ol same ol with a cleaner presentation. i’d gladly take my games at a nice 1440p30 (or maybe 40fps where resources allow, that’s a reasonable improvement without getting too optimistic about system capabilities) if it means what i experience is actually new and fresh and couldn’t have been done before

Historically consoles were better and cheaper at specific game applications like smooth scrolling 2D in the 80s / early 90s or powerful 3D in the late 90s / 00s, that isn't true anymore. The X360 / PS3 era was the last time a new console was better than anything a PC could do at console launch, and that era is long gone. Consoles used to offer a more simple experience than a PC, goto store, buy game, play game, very easy. Now, there are all sorts of patches and updates on day 1 to fix fundamentally broken games, single player games require you to be online, and you end up having to upgrade storage space like you would a PC. Nintendo still has console exclusive games, but Sony / MS are increasing their cross platform efforts to the point where exclusives are few and far between. The games take multiple years to develop and Every Game Wants You to sink your entire life and wallet into DLC for that single game, and there are hundreds of these games. I don't know. I'm tired man. I think Nintendo will be just fine doing Nintendo things next generation but i think Sony and Microsoft are in for some real trouble. Publishers have spent the last 20+ years chasing hyper realistic graphics like a dog chasing cars, and now that they just about have it, like a dog chasing cars, what do you do with it now? I'm rambling, but man, what a wild ride it's been for almost 40 years of my life growing up watching this entire saga unfold.

    As someone who owns a PS5, it sure doesn’t feel like it. You could tell me it was the PS4 Extra Plus and I’d believe you. This "next gen" is current gen by several years and it still feels like it hasn’t started. It just feels like the PS4 generation with a slight upgrade. Quite frankly both Sony and Microsoft have shit the bed this generation. Pretty much the only console truly doing great for the past few several years is the damn Switch, and that’s running on tech so old it belongs in a museum.

    Sony messed up with their plan for online games ... luckily for them 3rd party studios have saved the year so far .. the only games that someone can consider for to upgrade are helldivers 2 , final fantasy and few third parties like cyberpunk 2077 . I do not think 3-4 games are enough for to spent 600 pounds .

    They successfully sold PS5's faster than they could make then while still profiting off sales from games to PS4 owners. Now that things have slowed down, they will see a boost in PS5 sales with the Pro from customers who were waiting or are trying to pick up the Base model at a discount. I've started to notice games that won't see a PS4 release for the North American region. The choice will be to import the PS4 versions for more or get a PS5. I'm happy to pick up a PS5 Pro. My son will then be able to bring my PS4 and his games to his mother's house and will also be able to remote play PS5 games from it when he is there.

      @Da-iken Před 16 dny +2

      Yeah, also because it will be hard to justify a jump to PS6 for most normal user, if PS5 is running and looking good with most games. Tbh... it doesn´t matter if a game runs at 1080p, 1440p or 4k. 8k failed on the TV market as well. Sure, the time will come, but it really needs so much more time. Bigger player base is more important in future. And even when 8k is there, games will probably be better at 4k and upscaled. So games and gameplay should be the focus. Which is great.

    At this point im done buying PlayStation/ xbox consoles. The exclusive lists are sooooo small its just not worth it to me. At the rate of development for the big games coming out ill be on to the next console waiting and waiting. Or in a next phase of life. I've jumped to pc for a higher end experience in the visuals department. Consoles are still a great bang for you buck compared to a pc and even more so if you havent played a majority of their catalogs. A series s or x on sale is a crazy deal.

  • @pian-0g445
    @pian-0g445 Před 16 dny +1

    The only unique benefit of current gen to past (obviously besides more power) is the speed. More games (like ratchet and clank rift apart), utilise the speed of the consoles to deliver something that either required a ton of magic or at a smaller scale.
    Sort of like how Spider-Man 2 could have a larger map and around x2 travel speed due to the map being able to load quickly.
    But most games being released are still ‘conventional’ and don’t exactly require the extra speed besides quality of life.
    Like people said, graphically, there is the diminishing return. There’s still enough advancements that the ones pushing graphics on the 5 look better than 4. However, as the gap continues to decrease, the art direction becomes ever the more important (not that it never was). But due to this, what current gen needs to do to make it worth to an upgrade is producing games that can only be played on it (or a pc with good SSD).
    And a possible idea for Sony (Xbox seems to be aiming for services), is making a PS4 portable. An issue with handhelds before is a completely different version had to be made or ported. But what if a portable which is literally just a sized down ps4 is made? There’s already a huge library of good games and still many cross platforms being made. And we can see performance close to (maybe to the same level?) the ps4 by the ROG Ally and GO. And with it, maybe add some unique features, like people playing on it can connect to PS5 and play split screen games without needing to actually split the screen on the main display.

    • @amazingamazigh1538
      @amazingamazigh1538 Před 10 dny

      There are already way more powerful than ps4 handhelds like Rog Ally and Go.
      The only thing that would make a playstation handheld relevant thus appealing is if it has unique features mostly related to the ps5.

    high graphical fidelity for every major release isnt sustainable anymore. sony needs companies making smaller games on lower budgets that maybe dont push graphical fidelity to the edge. i feel Gamers™ are partially to blame, because i feel if sony did put out like a 3d platformer, or a 2d platformer or some sort of game that isnt full of ray tracing and high poly counts, people would attack them over it like "oh the ps5 is terrible and has bad looking games".
    it's kinda sad because if you look at the ps1 and ps2, it has so many unique experiences, nowadays every sony game is the same formula of "games that want to be art but feel like they're too ashamed of the fact they're video games" since the last of us.
    i dont want another 7 years in development cinematic third person game full of ray tracing and graphical effects, i want an ape escape game. i want a game that has an interesting idea in terms of game play, or an established genre that playstation doesnt really go for anymore like metroidvanias or platformers. instead it's just the same slop, especially with "live service" games that nobody is going to ever play being put out every 2 seconds. "AAA" games have been getting incredibly stale, very few of them stand out anymore

  • @davideduardogonzalezcaball3364

    Current gen has just begun. No need for a PS6 yet, if Sony releases a new console in 4 years, as they're planning, the improvement will be minimal. I think they should focus instead on building a handheld that can run PS4 games, that would be awesome.
