  • I demonstrate how to replace a sprinkler in your lawn. Specifically, I replace a Rainbird 6000 with a Rain Bird 42SA+. Home Depot was out of stock, so I got mine on Amazon:
    amzn.to/3wiEqjC
    (I get a small commission if you buy through my link, so thanks for your support)
    I also show how to adjust the sprinkler head once it's installed.
    0:59 Tools needed for the job
    1:35 Dig around the sprinkler
    3:08 Remove old sprinkler
    4:01 Install new sprinkler
    5:58 Explain how to adjust head, close up
    7:53 Set left end point first
    9:03 Adjust distance sprinkler sprays
    9:55 Adjust right end point

    Very similar to what I end up doing, except I use the RainBird 3500 as that matches the size of the old sprinklers that I am replacing. The hard work is really only the digging - the adjustment is just as easy as you describe in the video. The 5000 is larger diameter and has a 3/4" NPT fitting, so I can't just slide this into the old hole.
    Rainbird has a special screwdriver that you can use to pull the head up when the water is off - I use that and make the side-to-side adjustments, and only at the very end turn the water on so I can adjust the nozzle spray.

    Good video that is straightforward and shows how easy it is to replace a sprinkler head. Also important to know and not mentioned... The screw that shortens the water stream also holds the nozzle in place. It should always be screwed in at least enough to engage the nozzle even if you don't need to adjust the stream. Failing to do so may result in the water pressure blowing the nozzle out of the head. To shorten the stream, simply continue turning the set screw until it enters the top of the water stream.

    Very good overview and matches my experience. I have about 25 of these RB 42SA+ heads in my yard. You can find them at Lowe's and when bought 4 or more at a time there is a discount (something around $11 in my area currently). A couple of suggestions that work for me: 1) As one fails I take a new one out of my inventory, while the ground around the head is wet push it gently in every direction to break it's bond a bit with the dirt around. A large pair of channel lock pliers will then turn the entire head out as a unit without any digging (at least in m yard?). Carefully remove the old unit to keep damp dirt from falling into the hole. 2) Take your new head and turn it fully to the left and mark it (paint pen) then install it with the painted spot pointing to your left spray margin. These always come set to spray 180 degrees so if your on a yard edge no further adjustment (other than distance) is needed. Rain Bird makes a small screwdriver tool that has a blade extension on it that allows you to pull the heads up out of the body so you can fine tune them without the water running if you prefer. There is a socket for it on the top of the head - insert the tool turn it 90 degrees and pull up and the head comes up against the spring pressure - with a rubber glove you can hold it easily. Good video!!

    Great tips, great camera angles and video quality; however, your introductory music is twice the volume of your narrative - older viewers, like me, are looking for practical tips, not loud musical intros. It's a small point, but it almost kept from watching this excellent video.

    good video. so there is two ways of adjusting left and right movement?
    with the plus and minus screw and physically twisting the rotor stem? when do you know when to use which? The initial set up was confusing to me. where should you nozzle sprayer be pointed initially?
    before making any adjustments. Anyway, you have smart hands.

    • @diyhda

      Correct, you only need to make sure your sprinkler zone is off to work on your sprinklers.

    • @dogpatch75
      @dogpatch75 Před 11 měsíci

      Turning off the main is not necessary. However, be aware that any residual pressure remaining in the zone could cause some water to collect in the bottom of your hole. It's not a big issue, but may be annoying.

I also have an Orbit that my small screw will not fall in the hole to do the adjustment. Ughh~ I must replace another head. It's only about $11.

    What is easiest method do remove dirt if it falls in whole before new one is reinserted ?

    • @diyhda
      @diyhda  Před rokem

      If dirt falls in the piping before installing the new sprinkler, twist the new sprinkler anyway and when you turn the water on, make sure nothing is plugged. Typically, the water pressure pushes out any of the dirt that fell in, so it shouldn't be a problem.

    • @dogpatch75
      @dogpatch75 Před 11 měsíci

      ... or have a helper activate the zone without the head in place. Be ready to stuff a rag into the opening so more dirt is not washed in. You may need to then wait until the flood dries up.

    Unless the sprinkler is broken off the pipe that is totally unecessary. The top of that sprinkler head comes off, hence the ridges for gripping with pliers. Pull the guts out and screw the new ones in.
