  • Hello Everyone! Welcome back to The Sprinkler Channel! We had a really good question come up about how to change the Fixed Left Side of the Rain Bird 5000 when installing and adjusting the Rain Bird 5000 rotor sprinkler head since using the adjusting slots only changes the right side of the arc or how it rotates left to right. But How do we change the left side when we screw on the head and it's not pointing or starting at the left position where we need it to start. Come along for this short video and find out what some professionals may not even completely understand so you are ready to knock out those adjustments or installations of the Rain Bird 5000 without losing your mind and getting frustrated. Also if you haven't seen the other 2 videos related to the Rain Bird 5000 Rotor Sprinkler Head check those out on our channel. If you want the whole enchilada, consider subscribing to the channel to bookmark your one stop source for your sprinkler info. Hope this answers any remaining questions you all may have. Chau!

Many thanks for the one and only video addressing my exact issue, namely adjusting and setting the head for left side. Every other vid I've found (this included pro and even manufacturer) had been vague and has merely glossed over the left setting, focusing exclusively for right set, which I found remarkably easy.

    A couple ??
    1) to move the left stop clockwise - the reverse of what you did - going from 9 to 8 o’clock - you have to turn it counter clockwise 7,6,5….10,9, right?
    2) I’ve seen pros twist the head counterclockwise to move the left stop like you did. But while sprinkler is working. I think I read that you shouldn’t do it with water on. Thoughts?

Helps a lot you adressed fixed left is the perspective from behind the head. Of course if you were standing in front of the head the fixed left would be on your right .... But you would be soaked. It's easier if you understand what perspective you are viewing from.

I have ~17 year old 5000s as well as newer 5000s & a few of the 5000 Plus. Adjusting the right stop point doesn’t affect the left. The only way I found to adjust the left edge is to unscrew the rotor mechanism from the housing & rotate it. It still takes some trial & error, especially with the old ones.

  • @istvanmayer4878

Thanks for the explanation. I thought this would solve my problem, but I didn't. I have a Rainbird 5000plus that doesn't spin. It comes up when watering, but only sprays in one direction. I can adjust the radius with the screw, it can be turned from right to left and back. I took out the head and cleaned it with water and found no abnormality, put it back, but it does not turn. Water pressure is fine, other heads work fine. What could be the reason?

@@thesprinklerchannel interesting. I just replaced one yesterday - it hadn't failed, but the ground had settled unevenly and the rotor was at an angle, so it was spraying weird. If I have to do that much digging, I just replace the rotor at the same time - esp if the old one looks ancient. And this one did look ancient (it was RB5000), and it didn't have a slip clutch.

Typically you would install heads just before sod was laid. Leave funny pipe sticking out of ground so you can flush it. But you can do it whenever you’ll just want to make sure the heads are positioned at the correct height compared to final grade and that they won’t move when backfilling, etc.

I talk about a way to stop this with the pop up heads. The rotor heads unless old should already have them built in. If the head is old I would replace it with a new one. Spring May be getting worn out. They usually can stop leakage up to like 7 vertical foot drop in the feed line if I remember correctly.

Basically keep adjust the left side counterclockwise until you get back around to where you want it. You will want to at the same time adjust the right side with the +/- to keep ride side going clockwise as well as to not have the left edge alignment over-take the right edge alignment.

I’m not aware of a way to intentionally do that. Usually the higher the pressure the smaller the droplets it sprayers. Typically you want the 40 psi so the droplets aren’t a mist and never make it to the intended watering location (lawn). If you need misters, there are other sprinkler parts that can do this.

You’ll want to turn it left until it’s 360 then use the arc slot to reduce the right side so you can continue bringing the left side around until it’s where you need it and then re-adjust the right side. Just keep the right side “ahead” of the left side as you bring it around to where you need it. Or you could remove the head from body and reinstall it with the left side pointing closer to where you need it then adjust from there. Either will work.
