How to Install a BiFold Door

- Instructions to install a new bifold door. This bi-fold door is replacing an old ugly door. The door size is 24x80 and this video should apply to most door sizes. In most cases, the bi fold door should come with all the hardware needed to install the door. You may need to supplement the supplied hardware to accomadate any specific issues with your situation. In this installation, we needed to use longer screws to mount the upper track and drywall anchors and an extra screw to mount the lower bracket.

The spring housing you discarded goes in the middle of the track, between two doors, and makes the door easier to open. It pushes against the door when it is closed, not when it is open.

I had to replace the track hardware on my apartment's broom closet because I live in a dump and put in work order after work order and they haven't fixed it. I bought the Everbilt hardware kit from Home Depot for $11.00. I watched a few videos and yours was by far the best for me. Thanks so much for the help! I appreciate it. you are the only one who explained and showed what each screw does! Like adjusting height, etc. It is a bit hard for me to balance the upper into the hole and then align the bottom..mine does not have the spring thing on the top. Thanks!

Thanks for the video. I have a closet with a regular door frame. The opening width of the closet frame is around 24 inches. I like to install the one folded door because the room door is located nearby to the closet, and if I install the door at the closet, the room door and the closet door will clash with each other. My question is, can I install a bi folder door in the regular door frame?

I've seen bifold door tracks being sold by themselves, i.e., separately. Is it worth the trouble to install those instead of the ones that come with the door?

I believe the 1/2"-3/4" original screws you've replaced with longer ones (that barely go through your drywall) are because they are meant to attach to wooden door jambs in that track area, which is in most common applications.

Thank you for video. When the bifold door is open, it looks like each door is 1.5" thick. Therefore, fully open and flush I am hoping would be 3". Because I am installing where an AC unit is and I have to pull out the filter of the AC unit each month, I only have 3.5" clearance. Is it possible when the door is fully open that it would take up only 3" to 3.5"? From other bifold doors I have due to the bracket, it seems the open door takes up 4.5". Do you think it is possible to install a 24" x 80" door where when fully open it takes 3" to 3.5"? Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.
Hi! Thank you for this video! My existing opening is 37", can I put a 36" door in that space or do I need to somehow shrink the opening?
If you have a gap on either side, is that a problem? You will need some room for the door to pivot in, so maybe you'll be ok with that gap. In this video the opening is 24.5" and the door is 23.75"

My teen has a small bedroom 10x10 with a refular small closet with two sliding doors..Will it be worth it to swap them for blindfold doors to maximize closet space or not really? And can I install them on existing track or do blindfold doors come with its own track system? Thank u
When installing the knob at the end, you mentioned drilling a pilot hole a little bigger than the screw. You meant smaller, correct? Or do I misunderstand?
Also, when installing the bottom bracket, you installed the third screw as kind of an afterthought. Wouldn't that be important to ensure it doesn't scrape or interfere with the door. I watched another video and the installer screwed one screw into the wall, then one into the end of the bracket, then the last into the wall. I think that was just to ensure it rested flat with no undue stress on the screws.
These are nit-picky things, I know. Excellent and clear video and I appreciate your effort and time to help people like me learn. I work part-time in the hardware dept. at a DIY store and constantly seek to understand anything and everything to provide better customer service.

The pilot hole can be larger than screw since you are just pushing it through to grab the threads in the knob, you are not screwing into the door.
The third screw on bottom won't scrape because the head is not taller than the "pivot" point screw thing on the bottom of door, even on its lowest setting. If there is any scraping concern, a more appropriate screw would be a flat head screw. As far as stress on that screw or bracket, it would be near impossible to cause any stress on it if you screw into a wood stud or use an anchor like I did.

be switched around so that it opens on the opposite side. Can you help?
Patrick Riley Yes. The doors usually can be installed with either side being the hinge point. Take a look at the bottom point where the pin sits on the bottom, if you can move that hardware, you should be able to switch it, the top shouldn't cause to many problems, the bottom is the decider.

I have a laundry room with regular door and I am going to place it with Bifo door, so I don't have a pre lower track installed and I don't want to cut the tile to make room for one, can I still install the bifo with only upper track????

You need that space for the door to pivot. Perhaps a custom fit door would get that gap as tight as possible.

At about 3:20ish, did you just screw a simple hole into the ceiling then the screws into the hole?

I would like to add a bi-fold door to take off a section of a room in my home to make another room,is that possible if there isnt already a lower track and isnt as little as a closet door would be.
Shanna Williams Hi Shanna, these are the high points to your question... I think the max width for readily available bifold doors is 36", so two of them could span 6'. The track comes with the door, you just need to install it... easy enough into a wood subfloor under carpet with normal screws. (if you have a concrete subfloor, this is a little tougher but possible. (you'd use tapcons and a hammer drill.) The big issues is the height of the doors. The doors usually are 80" tall for an 84" opening and your ceiling, if you are spanning the middle of a room is probably around 96" to the ceiling.
Guys be careful, if you don't drill it at bottom to appropriate height the doors will lack gripe.
Disappointing. All I wanted to understand was how to get the second top pin in the track, and that was not shown....
very simple, push it down and put it in the track, it should be sprung.
ZipZapDIY Thanks. In my instance there wasn't enough room even when I depressed the upper pin down to slide it into the track. The trick was to loosen the upper screw to be able to tilt the door which permitted enough room to put it in place. I then repositioned the door and tightened the screw back up.
I have checked many woodworking plan sites. I think the instructions from Stodoys are the best.
