As an Inter Milan fan I congratulate Glasgow Celtic. They are the team that I follow in the Scot League. I also saw them play in Toronto, an exhibition game against Bari of Italy in the early 70's. It was a very good came with the end result being 2-2.
As a Glasgow Rangers supporter I have no problem in congratulating Celtic on this momentous achievement and as a Glaswegian. I am proud that these players, all born and raised within a 30 mile radius of Glasgow, achieved the heights that they did.
Unbelievable achievement. We got close again in Seville but just fell short. Hopefully we can see Celtic in a European final again but its hard due to the finances in the game nowadays.
Legendary final. The National Stadium in Lisbon used to host most of the games of Portugal National Team, since it was inaugurated in 1945. Nowadays it still hosts every year the final of the Cup of Portugal.
Partick Thistle supporter here, but always proud of Celtic's achievement in 1969. I'm watching and enjoying this video in tribute to the great Billy McNeill and that other Lisbon Lions that have passed away,
I grew up in Leeds and watched this match on TV. For quite a while after that, I wanted to be Tommy Gemmell, playing in the back streets and trying to smash in a long range shot (when I look at it now it's not as far as the young me thought). They were a marvellous team and so it is sad to hear today about the death of Tommy Gemmell. Yes, I carried on as (and remain) a Leeds United fan -- who wouldn't when the Leeds team of the time was also up there amongst the greatest ever -- but the soft spot for that Celtic team never left me. I even surprised a Celtic fan a couple of years ago by being able to recite the whole 11 who played that day. RIP Tommy.
In the history of the European Cup, this will always be the greatest victory. Greater than Forest or Steaua or Red Star, or the miracle of Istanbul. This is the greatest and will always be. And I’m not a Celtic fan, I’m not even Scottish
@Uncle Gilbert By buying players from elsewhere, including a British record transfer fee. Cheque-book team building. Celtic's victory was a community achievement, an entire squad of local lads, including but not limited to the starting eleven, no foreigners, no marquee signings, a former captain managing the team, completely organic. And they played Inter Milan, the internationally assembled superstars of the two-times world champions, off the park in a style that delighted neutrals around the world.
I'm English but this is amazing to see. I had no idea they'd won it till a few mins ago when I happened across an article on the BBC. You can't beat stories like this in football. The Scots must've had a good drink that night.
Legendery final! Under the sun of Lisbon in a beautiful old-fashion stadium (hosts every year the portuguese cup finals) the offensive scots beating the defensive Internazionale of Catenaccio. One of the biggest moments in sports history.
Fair play mate. I would say the exact same if it were a rangers team. Unbelievable achievement, met 5 of them, fortunate enough to meet bertie, John Clark, John Craig, Bobby Lennox & cesar. Will never ever be forgotten. Unfortunately didn't get to meet the others. I watch that match in full at least once a month. 🍀🍀🍀🇮🇪🏴
It's a fine thing for a Rangers fan to honour a Celtic achievement. I'm English and like England to win, but loving your " enemies" is what the doctor (Jesus) ordered and I wouldn't be surprised to see the great King of Kings wearing a Celtic shirt with a Rangers badge on! (Here's to more Rangers, Celtic and Scottish success!)
Also that year Glasgow Rangers got to the final of the Cup Winners Cup Final and were unlucky to get turned over, Kilmarnock also got to the semi-final of the old Fairs Cup (Euefa Cup) Try n get your head round that one, fuck imagine even one Scottish team getting that far these days. For a few iconic years the big two in Glasgow were up there with the best that Europe had to offer and were doing things that most teams dreamed of doing, with mainly homegrown players!!! SCOTLAND FOREVER☝❤⚽ 👏👏👏 Wurzo1968✌ ☝💚=⚽ ⭐ 🙏
Good man. I know there is so many amazing rangers fan. I'm so lucky to work with some of them. Feck this horrible sectarian hate. We are an amazing rivalry. We are family. Good luck to your club. And thank you for our amazing rivalry
As a Manchester United fan, it was absolutely justified for Celtic to be the first British club to win the UCL. Yes we were the first English team but it was absolutely justified and fair for Celtic to win the UCL. Not only a win for Celtic Football Club but also a win for Ireland and the Irish communities around the world and a tribute to many of the families that suffered Irish persecution and oppression (famine etc.). Respect to Celtic FC
My mum and dad stay 5 minutes away from Paradise ; ) we love Celtic, they have been part of our lives and will continue to do so for many years to come!
Brilliant night, brilliant win whatever the idiots say - to win with all those local players was magnificent - and this Celtic team played beautiful football. I'm a Liverpool fan, but this team were hard, fluent, and classy.
I had the good fortune to play with big Tam when we were just in our teens up at the pather housing scheme just a bunch of boys having a good time he was tall and skinny but he got the last laugh on us when celtic signed him great memory god bless R.I.P. TAM
What i love about this win was that Celtic won it with 11 players from Lanarkshire, players that were brought through the youth system. I love the way that when Rangers won the cup winners cup in 72, they thought that made them equal with Celtic, not a chance. We (Aberdeen), won it more recently and won the super cup aswell. But with Celtic having won the big one, they will always be the biggest club in Scottish football, no matter what Rangers fans say about 52 measley SPL's.
9 of the players were from Glasgow.1 was from Ayrshire and 1 was from Lanarkshire. In 1983 in Sweden when you won the ECWC 6 were from Glasgow and 0 were from Aberdeen.Get your facts right ma loon..Fit 👍 like....
I was 21 months old how I wish it was years the acheivements this " greatest ever" celtic side had that year was unheard of our style of play was a joy to behold but let's not forget the bhoys who played in earlier rounds who didn't play in the final like big yogi Hughes I think it was the next week Alfredo Di Stefano had his testimonial v Celtic wee jinky turned it on that night so much so the whole of the bernabue all 120,000 Spaniards ole'd. the wee man at the end of the game jinky lofted the ball above his head in appreciation & a big smelly real Madrid player knocked the ball out his hand Di Stefano never forgot our jinky from that night on #1proudtimhailhail
These boys were the greatest ever, squad build all from a 30 mile radius, will never ever be forgotten so many legends on that team. Jinky, cesar, the brush, Bobby Murdoch, stevie C, Bobby Lennox, Bertie, Tommy gemmell, Ronnie, Craigy, Willie Wallace. Will never ever be forgotten. The greatest ever team. God bless every single one of them. 🍀🍀🍀🍀🏴🇮🇪. YNWA.
Celtic consisted not only of Scottish players, but they were also from Glasgow..(or very close to). Whereas Forest, Liverpool and Villa consisted of British players. (+Grobelaar). I wish England could have played like this.
Great team, sure, but with a complete Inter should been more difficult to win. However, repeat, great team the same, infact three years later other final vs ducht Feyenoord, own to Milan San Siro stadium :-) p.s. excuse for my english.
i've seen that big cup...with flowing green n white ribbons....gloriously cascading in the spring breeze.... this you will never see. to an unfortunate.x
A wonderful side and a fully deserved victory - Inter were described as unbeatable but they were actually in the middle of what would prove to be a disastrous slump when Celtic met them in Lisbon on 25 May. After a brilliant campaign Inter's season began to unravel in mid-April when they laboured to a 3-2 win at struggling Venezia. A side that would be relegated had twice broken through Herrera's so-called impregnable defence. That was Inter's last league win in '66-67. Of their last six Serie A games they lost two and drew four (failing to score in three of those matches), handing the title to Juventus. They also needed a play-off to overcome CSKA Sofia in the European Cup semi-final. Herrera was known for running his sides in the manner of a boot camp and it appeared his players were completely burned out as the season reached its climax.
The greatest ever British performance in the European Cup by a team of players born within miles of Parkhead. It will never be repeated. A fantastic team lead by one the best centre half’s we’ve had. RIP Billy MacNeil. Legends🏴
What an achievement. First British team to win this title. Long time ago, yes, but it seems this team is still the best in Scotland. (England too...?) Way to go. From Canada.
not just the fact that we were the first British team to win this it's the team, they were bound like a family. also no other team will get such an achievement while all players being within 20 miles of each other
To young to remember the Lisbon lions, but their story is absolutely brilliant. To have those 10 players born in Glasgow and the foreigner Bobby Lennox from Ayreshire win the European cup is unbelievable, it would never happen now. Jinky was one of the greatest players to come from these isles, but I believe Bobby Murdoch was also up there with jinky, probably didn’t get the plaudits he should have got. Massive respect to Billy McNeil who briefly managed my beloved MCFC in the mid 1980’s. RIP to all the Lisbon lions who have now sadly passed, legends all of them. This amazing achievement will never be forgotten. MCFC Loyal since 1973.
The final should have been Celtic - CSKA Sofia. Unfortunately the Bulgarians never were able to reach the final of the Champions Cup or any UEFA competition in fact. Celtic really deserved to win Inter, and I`m sure almost all the Portuguese were supporting Celtic because we tend to support the underdogs.
