Celtic 2-0 Real Madrid, European Cup Q/F 1980

  • A glorious night for Celtic as they beat a Real Madrid side that had won La Liga in four of the last five years (indeed, that season, they would make it five out of six). Unfortunately for the Bhoys, their two-goal lead proved to be insufficient - Los Blancos, with Englishman Laurie Cunningham among their number, came roaring back at the Bernabeu to advance 3-2 on aggregate. Arthur Montford and Ian St John commentate.

I remember being at this game. At that time, Celtic weren't very good, but, this was a great game and we had the beating of them once that first goal went in. Towards the end of the first half of the game in Madrid, we were the better side and had two great chances to increase our lead. Then, in the last minute of the first half, they got a truly dodgy free kick inside the box and scored. That was it for Celtic and we lost 3_0. But for that stupid first half goal, Celtic would have made the semi final. As I say, they were not great that year, but neither were any of the other teams that year, so, you never know. Or maybe l'm just romantasising a bit much.

What we don't see from this nine and a half minute clip is the overall performance of the late , great , ex-WBA and England player , Laurie Cunningham , who he was the best player on the pitch that evening , and showed all the classy skills that made Real Madrid want to sign him in the first place .

This was a great Celtic European Night, but the greatest European Night for Celtic was in 1970 at Hamden Park against Leeds United when Jimmy Johnstone ran Leeds defense, and especially the great Terry Cooper to the ground. I watched that game live on TV, and that was the first time that I could feel the Hampden Roar. The Noise was deafening, and Celtic had a FANTASTIC T-E-A-M and won the game 2-1 (Big John Hughes and Bobby Murdoch scored) coming from behind in the second half and winning 3-1 on aggregate. Unfortunately, they didn't play well in the final that year except for their Goal Keeper Williams who was phenomenal, and lost to Feyenoord 2-1 in Extra Time.

Such a pity how money has ruined football for smaller countries.

Came up from Manchester on a Fitba Special via B.R. with 600 'Tic fans. When Celtic scored at the Traditional 'Rangers end (there werny any there , obviously) where I was ,it was like a wave of humanity piling back and forward...well over the official 67,000 ( as per usual in those days) I ended up 40 yards away from my mate. Why can't Celtic and Scottish teams emulate this anymore?.....simple ...Sky revenues have been lavished on the English game reducing our income streams to virtual paupers compared to the likes of Luton and Brentford for the past 30 x years causing our clubs to sign mediocre foreign players and allow the grass roots that produced 3 all-Scottish player teams as European champions between 1967-1983. to shrivel and die The hype and overwhelming backing by media, including the English Broadcasting media has created the foreign interest that allows corrupt oligarchs and bored Hollywood types to pour money into teams that would never have competed with Celtic in the past.

I wonder when these ape chantings started in european football.
Because if you watch portuguese games from the sixties and seventies against spanish or british teams you dont hear anything. Or french teams of those days also had french carrebean players. Did pele ever experience such in the intercontinental cup games against the italians in the sixties?

@Uncle Betty like they'd leave Europe in a jiffy lol the majority as you put it was only just a majority many believe that vote was rigged we know for a fact the 1st Indy referendum was rigged. To say that the Scots created the union is not the case it was king James who created it yes he was Scottish but the Scottish people had no say in it. You're actually proving my point most English like Scots and Irish think British 2nd

@Uncle Betty I'm not trying to convince you of anything I doubt very much that you keep up with Scottish news to say sour grapes? Smacks of ignorance but i wouldn't expect you to keep up with Scottish news. King James created the union on the advice of his advisors in England do some research on king James the 1st of England/6th of Scotland you'll see what im saying
