Thank you for this upload 💚 I was 10 years old and not my first European game at the old CP. I remember Sporting coming out with the hoops on and thinking why are Celtic wearing black shorts haha , we had to win this game 3-0 having lost 2-0 in Lisbon to a very decent side. It was 3-0 at half time and Celtic really handed them a footballing lesson that night what a Celtic side this was with the imperious Danny Mcgrain , Tommy Burns, Frank McGarvey, Paul Mcstay, Brian McClair I could list them all but for me that night it was all about Danny McGrain, Tommy Burns and Frank McGarvey , who were sensational , I'll never forget it and to see it now almost 40 years later is a joy to behold. This was the core of the side who were denied progression by UEFA due to the bottle throwing incident v Rapid Vienna , who won the one off tie at neutral old Trafford and went all the way to the final eventually beaten by Everton. I've always believed that we would have added another European trophy to our collection had it not been for the bottle incident which hit no one . Fantastic to see this again many thanks HH☘
I was at the game, I never thought I was capable of such happiness, then I got home and watched the highlights with Arthur Montford's commentary, he took me to a different level. GOAL
That game was the best game any old celtic fan would say Tommy burns was superb tht nite he was class I never forget the look on celtic fans faces when when teams came out celtic wearing away tops tht was first time ever did anyboby know Tommy burns talked paddy bonner into playing tht night cause big paddy dad passed away tht day hail hail Tommy burns
My first European match.I was 14. Met my Dad and his mate straight from work. In the rangers end had a great vie the goals in the first half. Time stood still for me when Tommy Burns hung in the air to score. Amazing atmosphere
My first european game as well. Also in the huns end with my Auld man Eddie who could be your uncle. I'm Kevin Columba. Have a late cousin Columba who passed away in Geelong. Also an uncle Fr Neil Columba. Uncle John
One of my first european games and one of the best, made it from Paisley on the bus as a 15 yr old and remember feeling it was just one of those nights we could score with every attack..Vividly remember being in the jungle and Danny McGrain and Davie Provan working loads of wee passing movements and been many times since but this game always sticks with me as Lisbon were a right good team at the time, but then so were we...Happy Days
i was 18 when i was at this game, and still remember it like yesterday, its my alltime favourite game, what a performance from start to finish,i still remember the guys next to me moaning when tom mcadam scored the second goal saying whats he doing up there he should be back there defending poor tam took some stick from the fans for years lol,and so glad mcgarvey got the last goal if anyone deserved a goal that night it was him, happy memories, thanks for the upload been looking for this game for years had it on video till my machine chewed it up lol,if only the current team had half the ability and spirit of this team, and id have big tam mcadam over ambrose any day of the week
My first ever European night at Paradise. Hadn't been planning to go but a friend called last minute and off we went. What a night. Celtic were a good team in '83 but Sporting were two up from the first leg and were a good team themselves. Never imagined we'd put five past them. Great days. You just showed up at the turnstyle and paid yer money. As long as they could cram you in, you were set. Stand on the terraces and roar your lungs out for 90 mins. Pie at half time and then home. Feckin magic.
Yeah my favourite Celt George mcCluskey waltzed into their dressing room on full time looking for a shirt swap only to find that Cruyff was the only man willing to entertain his request! That’s one any man or woman would yearn to tell the grandkids?
Aye I was at the home game and the atmosphere was just truly incredible , the loudest deafening noise I'd ever heard and this before the game had started, the 2-2 scoreline was perceived as a disappointment. I also remember listening to the win in Amsterdam in the house on the familys old radiogram haha and the scenes inside my house that night were almost reminiscent of those at the home game fantastic victory in a tie that few had given us much hope of winning. Magical memories HH ☘
My first European game...huge crowd that night. Remember a respectful hush when Cruyff got the ball. Olsen was on fire that night but the Bhoys fought hard for the draw. Little known fact was Van Basten was on the bench that night but was still a raw teeenager.
Was at this game, best atmosphere I've ever heard , number 8 in the jungle, when Tam scored the 1st we all knew something special was about to happen that night, could still feel the adrenaline running thru me in school the next day, MAGICAL night🍀
Great team solid fae back tae front. That Celtic side matches any in the past decade for me. Not many Celtic sides have taken a decent Portuguese outfit apart like that in Europe chasing a 2-0 deficit.
Willie, great uploads. Do you have the Juventus v Celtic away leg in 1981. Frank McGarvey tells me he scored a disallowed goal with a minute to go but this goal is not shown on the Italian TV highlights on you tube. Cheers :-)
Mate no one can tell us why because a good friend of mine of was parkhead one night with some Celtic player's and ex celtic players he txted me and said who running the night asked has someone got a question i said as them why celtic where wearing awy top guy couldn't answer it but they did it again when we played again but both teams had there away tops on even so when Tommy burns book came out pat Bonner dad passed away tht day and tomny burns talked him to play tht night im 50years old Tommy burns was my hero is book just tell how good tommy was on and off park god bless Tommy burns
I was there Murdo should have scored four but was brilliant, McLair should have had a hatrick, McAdam was brilliant, the rubber man couldn't be marked, Tommy used his right foot my hero and Aitken was fucking Aiiiiiiiitken...smashed...gonnae geeze oor hoops back Sporting...up the Gorbals #3 Tommy Burns Supporters Club...🍀🇮🇪☘💚⚽️🏆
This night was my first in the Jungle, I was 14. I remember my ears ringing like Id been at a Rock concert and I never figured out why we wore our away strip at home, and they wore our home strips? :-)
@mikejeelan1888 - Because they played in their home kit in the away leg, so SP Lisbon played in their away kit in Lisbon that night. Why this happened I can’t remember, probably because UEFA are as mad as the EU, who famously once ruled that a curved banana isn’t a banana. How on Earth SP Lisbon lost this tie so spectacularly though (apart from Celtic blowing them away of course!) is surprising, as they won well at 2-0 in the first leg, and the opinion at the time was that it could have easily have been 5-0 over there. Celtic played a shocker and the back pages all ran with the headlines of ‘Lisbon lambs’ as a direct reference and opposite meaning to the 1967 side the next day. Great match, great performance, great result, great crowd, of which I was one! Next up was Nottingham Forest 0-0 first leg away, then sadly 1-2 at Celtic Park in the 2nd leg , and that was the end of Europe for the Celts for that season. As I also recall, Rangers were drawn against Porto at the same round that Celtic played Sporting, I think Rangers just lost out by the odd goal in their tie.
Lance Kirkaldy - why turn this sporting vid comment into a Brexit discussion? Plenty of places elsewhere for political debate. The EU story was in fact not a fake, they did try to introduce such lunacy. I merely compared both the EU and UEFA as both being crazy crackpots run by crazy crackpot committees. Remember the Rapid Vienna fiasco and ruling a year or two after this game? They found Rapid guilty more than Celtic and still forced the Celts to replay the game 200 miles outside of Glasgow.
g2bam mind going down to Nottingham game as a 15 year old, wee day off school 🏫, maw was worried sick, was absolutely freezing night and to make matters worse for ma poor wee maw , game was on tv one of barrier behind the goal s Collapsed, honestly thought we would beat them at Celtic Park but was a bit of a damp squib and lost 1-2, ,
Absolutely Magnificent watching thee games from yesteryear , takes me back ,Thank you
Took my Dad the game...great memories. Miss him very much. What a night we had :-) Left us 2015 in his 90's

I was there that night.
Great to see these games all these years later. Thanks Willie.

Tommy Burns played a blinder in this game MOTM .

Roy Aitken and subtlety are words that shouldn't named in the same sentence

First time I think I have seen somebody else playing in hoops at parkhed apart from Celtic 😀

Great stuff from the Time.!!!!
Tims.!!!!
This night was my first in the Jungle, I was 14. I remember my ears ringing like Id been at a Rock concert and I never figured out why we wore our away strip at home, and they wore our home strips? :-)
Because Sporting showed up with their home strip only. I was at that game travelling by train with the South Wales Celtic Supporters.
Need a carbon copy of this tonight.
Celtic ripped them to shreds and handed them their hoops on a plate.
The last time I checked, Glasgow was still in Scotland which is a constituent part of the UK, so why the foreign flag?
Was it really necessary for the Lisbon keeper to wear green? Like watching 21 leprechauns 🤣🤣🤣
Why are Celtic wearing an away top at home?
@mikejeelan1888 - Because they played in their home kit in the away leg, so SP Lisbon played in their away kit in Lisbon that night.
Why this happened I can’t remember, probably because UEFA are as mad as the EU, who famously once ruled that a curved banana isn’t a banana.

g2bam the story about the banana is 100% fake and forms part of the lies we were all Feb. Brexit a disaster for us.

This is a bit like the hapoel beer sheeva game
I honestly dont see the comparisons the side of 83 would've blown away the the side who scraped through v Happoel HH
