  • Jonathan MS Pearce is a philosopher, author, columnist, and public speaker with an interest in writing about almost anything, from scepticism to science, politics, and morality, to the environment. Essentially because everything is philosophy. He is a former teacher and is now battling primary progressive multiple sclerosis. He can no longer play football with his twin boys, but he can still write a good column and book. And remarkably, and very bravely, he has just come back from an arduous journey to Ukraine’s frontlines. His experiences are the subject of today’s conversation.

well hopefully u r doing so to know their inverted-reality perceptions, which are sort of like a shallow analysis of taking today and interposing it with something 70 years ago and having some drugs on the brain or somesuch. I cannot fathom it really. Sachs is the only one i've heard & he has that classic personality of being entirely cracked, and imho, his thing is classic passivity/appeasement and/or a form of contrarianism that only rigid minds with obsesive tendencies tend to do, namely with age.

And in this context: I think a LOT went "below the curtain".

CAN be ,but so far in over two years, the willingness of the west to give Ukr appropriate abilities, has not happened!!!! And even the US's pre-war statements were bizarrely wrong-headed, in stating what it would not do in such and such circumstances, where Biden said US involvement would depend on how extensive Ru's invasion would be.! That is insane to state before an invasion, and anyone knows this, not just military strategists. Fact is that too many ppl in the west have been cowed by Ru aggression. Wake the fk up, before it's too late! Probably within three years, there will be a western military intervention necessary to wrap this up

Same happened to Latvia, where the most victims paid for it on barricaded streets of Riga. Tanks rolled in, but couldn't pass. No-one took to weapons, but people, especially the press were shot at by Omon. Our best operator and random people including an enfant were shot dead. TV, radio and other institutions were sieged and complete blackout took place.
My dad were working that day in national TV and we were really worried at home. Turns out he managed to finish work and leave very shortly before the TV building were stormed. I don't know how this ended, but people held out until orders from Moscow were overturned and Omon had to leave for Moscow. It took another 3-4 years to exile all Russian forces stationed here during USSR back where they came from. We would do anything to not let their equivalent today back in.

yep, very basic. And i studied international politics at the high level. This is a plainly evil system that is trying to flex by showing how much barbarism it can inflict on a nation that had never and could never pose not only any risk to it, but wasn't discriminating against Russian speakers in any way in Ukr!! In the first months of the war, Ru was already torture-raping/murdering ppl including children & the evidence was documented by U.N. personnel. This was should have been intervened in by a coalition of the willing, likely the J10 part of Nato, but admittedly, perhaps the nations are not ready including mine, the U.S. We will be ready pretty soon, i am guessing. Ru is going to be contained, period. Otherwise, u can kiss europe's past 30 years of ultra prosperity, goodbye.

The problem is that large parts of the western democracy populations are- deeply disenfranchised- as in they have no stake anymore in the democracy. They do not participate economically and more often then not - socially. For someone with zero-perspective beyond consuming colorful electrons in the parents basement, waiting for there life to decline further or to sit in a job, that is slowly ruined by a anonymous internet cooperation, they feel the alure of the totalitarian and authoritarian, because here is somebody who is not sentenced by the circumstances to a slow death, who seemingly just breaks the rules that form the rope. And for those citizens- we have nothing more to offer since quite a while. Blood, sweat and tears, so instead of some ruski-mir dictator, some shareholder vampire caste can turn your life into a glorified juicebox for a few years more? There is no perspective in it all.
And the likes of Elon Musk and his social network pals created this world of smoke and mirrors, were there is no-perspective for a decent life, but to follow some totalitarian conqueror on a plundering raid & take-over. The deal seems to be "you help to crown us king, freeing us from all democratic threats to our riches" and for that we promise you the mirage of a piece of the cake at the end of the tunnel.

Fascinating discussion. There's something you seem to have missed in the debate after Macron's 'can't rule out boots on the ground' speech, was when a few days later he referred to the necessity for strategic ambiguity to worry the Russians. It seems the Americans went "you what?", the Germans went "what page & which line in military handbook is that?", and the British, culturally suited for that ambiguity with all their satire, sarcasm and irony, just continued hanging onto US shirt-tails. But I agree with that tactic when dealing with Russia.

I lasted about 90 seconds into his tinfoil hat rant about how the war is a US money laundering op, Zelenskyy sold parts of Ukraine to Monsanto, etc., etc.,
More discouraging was the comments section of nodders and clappers praising his brilliance, fawning over the possibility of another Kennedy in the Whitehouse.
Strangely, many seemed concerned and said he needed to be protected from the same fate as JFK and RFK-as if there were some sort of genetic predisposition to assassination in the family.

    • @18_rabbit

they're getting exposed to b.s. online, not 'information', and they're vulnerable to it bcuz of the way they think, the way their minds work. I had a friend since the early '80's long ago, who in recent years in his sixties, started revealing that he really was far more ignorant than i'd realized, and that when he had a nervous breakdown in his fifties, he'd fallen for expensive obviously phony nonmedical treatments for his ailment, right out of a bad comedy. He is a latin american and was always a bit latin fascist-sympathetic, and fell straight into the online b.s. back in '16 during the US election re it. I was stunned, at how the combo of a not well rounded education, and a superficial way of thinking, combines to make some personalities vulnerable to the conspiracy oriented b.s. But bottom line is a lack of empathy in these ppl, from what i've seen, including in him. Some make it seem like they have great empathy, but it's either shallow or false, and is simply grievance for self or obsession, aka injustice colelctors

Let's hear from Michal Rachon about democracy in Poland and the media. In stead of from JMSP repeating Tusk's lies.
BTW the only allegations I saw against TVP were 2 isolated instances. the one about jews wasn't anti jewish. It was the president stating that 1 victim should not be seeking compensation from another, they should both be seeking compensation from Germany. The 2nd, the LGBT, was unacceptable to me but nothing compared to what is broadcast on American TV. Notably only 1 presenter has gone from TVP World since the Tusk Govt took over, and that is Michal Rachon who made a factual documentary about Tusk. How "independent" is that?
A comment in JF's interview was that a former security guy has been appointed head of TVP. How "independent" is that?

@@W_BinI just love his style and his outlook was the right angle on the situation..He was the first broadcaster I saw that recognised the threat and held the enemy to account with the level of contempt they deserve. He is a real inspiration to me 😇

I thought he was a terrible reporter. Full of half sentences and pauses. Reminded me of Don Lemon. Glad TVP is back but I for one will not miss Rock.

@@migproductions4045 What I liked the most was that he confronted the west for not providing arms and lobbied hard for tanks, patriots etc, pointing the finger at who had them. I think he was the first to openly do so.

I don't understand the argument against bombing Russian oil refineries. Refineries are consumers of crude, not producers. Reducing consumption has the effect of reducing demand; reducing demand tends toward lowering prices at the pump, which would should be a net positive for Biden. Is there something I'm overlooking?

Great comment, yes, why can't others see the situation clearly ? - I don't understand it either ! Many of us lived Russia/ Soviet agression - had to practice "duck and cover" as children - I remember my father being so very upset that I got a QSL card, (reply to a reception report), from Shortwave Radio Prague, he was genuinely concerned that, "oh my God ! - now they, (the communists), know where we live". It seems that a new generation doesn't know about RSG's and the reasons for them.

I think American concerns about the oil price are a red herring. America has its own oil stocks and it own ability to control the 'price at the pump'. There has to be something else going on here.

Probably Russian disinformation. They would like the American electorate to connect Ukraine support with high gas prices.

As an American, I find it strange to listen to 2 citizens of the UK talk about “American Imperialism”. We merely dabbled in it. The UK was the master of it for 4 centuries. The US made them quit in the 1950’s (Suez). Russia has been an imperial power since Ivan IV.
