- Surly Ice Cream Truck 2020 tested climbing steep technical terrain. Also tested doing a long climb at elevation. This video will test a vital aspect of the bike’s capability, whether using as a fun trail bike, or even using for adventure or bike packing. This test will demonstrate the bikes traction and stability, and also test the 1x12 drivetrain (specs below) to see if it can propel the bike up climbs in spite of its relatively heavy weight.

Looks like a great trail! Beautiful! I’m in Ohio. Lots of muddy woods. I have the surly Wednesday and got it four years ago. I’ve ran hours of river beds and steep tight hill climbs and descents. As well as jumps and it’s great! I love it the most out of my bike. I have a couple that cost double and I still grab the surly.
My brother has a Wednesday, I have ridden it a lot and it’s a great all around fat bike.
beautiful bike,I just purchased a Cannondale Fat Caad man I wish we had trails like that here in the St Louis Area,Nice work on the climbs
kool Cycledad congrats on the new fatbike! You will love it! Fatbikes are the most fun I have had on bikes. Thanks for stopping by!
*_Great vid my friend! Enjoyed, thanks for sharing and keep it up!_*
Thanks for taking the time to stop by!
Looks like a very trail-capable bike. Breathtaking view also. Thanks for sharing mate 🤙🏼
Thanks for stopping by!!
Fun video man, really beautiful. The outdoor nature feels way better atm!
Thanks for taking the time to have a look!
Loving your videos! Almost got an ICT, but I went with the Wednesday instead. All of those Surly fat bikes are a ton of fun. Can't go wrong with any of them. Keep up the good work!
Thanks much appreciated! You are correct, can’t go wrong with any of them! My brother just got the All Natural Grape Wednesday a couple weeks back, can’t wait to check it out! Enjoy and thanks for watching!
Killing it on those trails!! Nice work!!
Paige Miller thanks for the comment and taking the time to watch!
Wow impressive , the scenery alone was outstanding not to mention the performance of the bike and the rider. Those uphill were taking my breath away. However the down hill is worth the climb !!! I was amazed at some of the terrain. I must say you have a nice Camera also . I look forward to the next outstanding video. I love this one.
Sherry Hospodar thanks for checking it out!
Love the video!! Now this is my kind of riding......well the dirt and rock not the climbing so much LOL!! This video does make we want possibly flip from getting a Pugs to a more trail worthy Bike. I figure i will do more trails then Bike packing and I can do both with ICT. Once i get it wrapped in OD Green.
dirteveryweekend thanks for stopping by! Maybe check out the Wednesday too, it has similar trail worthiness as the ICT but with smaller tires like the Pugs!
Beautiful trail! 👍🏽
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
That’s seriously the coolest looking fat bike I’ve seen. Love steel frames. But wow, that freewheel is loud
It’s a very cool and fun bike! You can definitely hear it coming!
Sick !
Thanks for checking it out!!
Now I want a fat bike ! Thanks Tom! Lol
They are a blast! You would love it, especially if doing any kind of bikepacking interests you. Thanks for watching?
few fat bike reviews available thx. would really love to see more rides on super techy stuff to see how they perform close to their limits
Yeah I have plans for 2021 to do some bikepacking, and also add a dropper and maybe a front suspension fork and do more tech MTB style terrain. Hoping to baseline them first before upgrades. Thanks for watching!
I like the Hot Pink, but the "L" on the top tube would drive me nuts. I take it, that's the frame size?
Yeah it is. I have often consider debadging it of all of the various non logo labels, but I usually put it on my to-do list and never get to it.😂
Nice review! What is the tooth count on the big ring in the back? 46?
It’s a 51! Combined with the 30t up front it crawls up everything. Thanks for checking out the video!!
Great vid!
What tire pressures were you running?
Israel Magalit Honestly, I’m not sure. When I ride this bike in variable conditions I tend to air them up by feel, usually on the higher side of what a I think, and then once I get riding let out air as needed on the trail. I need to get a quality gauge and start tracking it. Thanks for stopping by!!!
Nice surroundings, very different from the woods in Holland. I ride a yellow pugsley and I always wonder what a even fatter bike will feel like.
I have a Pugs as well and they are great bikes, have been riding mine a lot lately and plan to give it a make over soon! Thanks for stopping by to check out the video!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Well I also need to overhaul some parts, I need a lighter front wheel and want a generator hub for the front. I also like to upgrade to the new pug frame later after the wheel has been installed.
That looks like a work out.
It definitely was, but the hike is capable!
Thank you for sharing! Your videos helped me to purchase the 2022 Salsa BearGrease Deore. Perhaps you mentioned below; are you able to share the "approximate" location of your ride????
Congrats on the Beargrease, and thanks for watching! This trail system is around Left Hand Reservoir in Boulder, CO
Impressive all the reply. im checking a cheap fatbike but im in city. would be stupid to use on road right?
grrr i love their look and badassness, but aside from snow i dont see reason to have one
i want one xD
They won’t be the most efficient option on pavement, but you definitely can do it. I say go for it if it makes you happy. They are the most fun!!
Do you find a need for shocks on a fat bike for downhill comfort over larger rock or dose the oversized tires make it unnecessary. I like how the maintenance on the bike and the weight would be less. I guess if it was aluminum you could add that and it still not be too heavy. Just wondering if it would even be necessary.
Andrew Hart I think for a lot of rougher riding the big tires do great. They soak up all the small stuff, even washboard extremely well. For ruts and rocks they still do a great job. I think the big improvement is traction and stability, traction is better than most full suspension bikes, even if you feel the terrain a little more in the rough stuff. My next video has a lot of rough stuff so check it out because I talk about a lot on this topic. Thanks for stopping by!!!!
In Morrison and suddenly got the urge for a fat bike. Of all the searching, Surly really resonated with me. I really like the new Pugs, but feel the ICT might be better in CO. Could the Pugs do this trail? It's about the technical range I'd be in. Would you be at a severe disadvantage with the Pugs or would that not happen until the trails got more severe? I'm 45, 6'2" and 240lbs. Seems like Pugs would be more comfortable. My mix would be about 60% tooling around with my 6 year old on street and snow and local paths, 20-30% doubletrack type places and paths, 10-20% single track trails in mild to medium range. Pugs or ICT?
Hi John, I think either bike would do well for you, but the ICT definitely has a little more trail geometry, and the Pugs is definitely more suited for long range touring. I think the Pugs is probably slightly more in line with the break down you described. The more upright position and smaller tires makes the Pugs better for general riding. I have a 2014 Pugs and that’s what I use it for. Good luck with your new bike and thanks for stopping by!!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Subscribed! Thanks so much. Would you hate being on the Pugs for the trail in your "Can it Climb" video?
It almost feels like you have a full suspension! What were the tires pressures if you remember?
Honestly I don’t really keep close track of PSI, I adjust it as needed for the conditions.
How fast were you rolling down at the start of the video? Looked scary hehe. I just got an ogre and I am thinking about getting a Pugsley or an ICT next haha
Hard to say as far as putting a number on it, but the ICT definitely gains momentum and carries speed going downhill. The superwide view on the GoPro also always makes things look faster IMO. Congrats on the new Ogre! New ICT coming in December so if you’re in the market be ready because they won’t last long! Thanks for watching!!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend you know what colors will be available? I found one Jack frost blue in Germany 2nd hand available so I am thinking about that as well
@@JohnKrakatoa I know it won’t be Prickly Pear anymore. If you found a good used bike I would strongly consider it! If it’s powder blue then it’s one of the older “jump bar” bikes, but I love those. My Pugs is older and that style and it’s a great bike.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend what is a jump bar bike?
this is the 2nd hand ICT bike bikemarkt.mtb-news.de/article/1428017-surly-ice-cream-truck-xl-jack-frost-blue
@@JohnKrakatoa The “jump bar” is that little gusset on the frame that goes from the top of the seat tube to the down tube. It’s the quickest way to identify the older ICT/Pugs frames, as the redesigned frames from the last few years don’t have it anymore. That ICT looks pretty good and clean. Looks like the wheels were swapped out.
I want one.
You won’t regret it!! Thanks for stopping by!
Surly Ice Cream Truck, Trek Farley, or Specialized Fatboy for a heavy rider? I don't need the lightest bike, looking for the strongest to handle the most abuse... Suggestions?
Jason Owens Ultimately any of the three would probably do the job, but I’d be hard pressed to pick any bike over the Surly ICT for durability. I believe Trek rates most of their bikes to a 300lbs weight limit too, FYI. I have hammered my ICT on some really rough terrain and it feels extremely solid. Thanks for watching and good luck in your bike search!!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Hey thanks. Looking for something more than a 300lb weight limit. Thanks for the response!
I am really late. Did you run tubed or tubeless?
100% tubeless on this bike from day one.
Hey Tom, what kind of psi were you running here? Specifically the steep section at 8:20. I would guess 8 or so?
Never mind! I saw your reply to a previous comment.
Aaron Mack thanks for stopping by to check it out! I do need to find a quality accurate gauge to track it better
Elevation Every Weekend I have found the Topeak Smart Gauge D2 to be super excellent and a worthy investment, especially after having two analog gauges fail. It also fits very nicely into a small saddle bag. Something to consider!
Aaron Mack thanks for the recommend! Topeak makes good gear.
Hello. please tell me what is your height and what size is your fatbike surly ? Thanks
I am 5’11”, and this bike is a Large and fits me great.
ICT vs Wednesday??
I haven’t actually ridden a Wednesday yet, but it kinda splits the difference between the Pugs and the ICT. I already had an older Pugs, so the ICT made more sense for me, and I do like it’s option for bigger tires. It will depend on what your riding style and conditions are. Can’t really go wrong IMO. Thanks for watching!!!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend The difference in terms of geometry?
Pretty close, the ICT is about a degree slacker in head tube and seat tube angles, slightly longer chainstays (fits bigger tires) and longer overall wheel base. So the ICT would be a little more stable on downhill and rough trails. Again, not too drastic a difference
What trails were you riding on?
These were primarily around Left Hand reservoir in Boulder county. Thanks for watching!
What tire pressure were you running?
Hard to say for sure, but it would have been a higher summer pressure for this ride.
😂 some times you just have to get off and push the fat bike up the hill,
That’s the truth!
Any bike can climb as long as you have the lower gears
I would say that’s largely true, however very steep, undulating terrain with loose rock such as this, traction can be the limiting factor. The torque multiplication of the gears can simply spin out the rear tire and then it’s over. This was really demonstrating that aspect, gearing combined with epic traction even though it’s a 35lbs fatbike!
l have a few nice bikes and l can tell you the ICT is exceptional in climbing on any terrain and match with that 12 speed is smooth
21:05 What are those two animals on the road?
Those are prairie dogs, crazy little critters.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Aha! We don't have them where I live. They look funny!
Manufacture needs to put a cool engine on these bikes, small , light, fast and quite.
